Lexus Rx300 1999 problems
The Lexus RX (Japanese: レクサス・RX, Hepburn: Rekusasu RX) is a luxury crossover SUV sold since 1998 by Lexus, a luxury division of Toyota. Originally released in its home market of Japan in late 1997 as the Toyota Harrier, export sales began in March 1998 as the Lexus RX.
Considered as the first luxury crossover SUV, five generations of the RX have been produced to date, the first being compact in size, and the latter classified as mid-size. Both front- and four-wheel drive configurations have been used on the RX series, and several gasoline powertrain options, including V6 engines and hybrid systems, have been offered. In the Lexus model lineup, the RX sits below the larger Lexus LX (marketed as the Toyota Land Cruiser body-on-frame SUVs outside North America, respectively), and above the shorter and less wider, but taller GX SUV. The name "RX" stands for "Radiant Crossover". It has also been labelled as "Recreational Cross Country" in some markets. The RX's current Toyota counterpart is the Highlander/Kluger; past counterparts included the Harrier and Venza.
The first-generation RX 300, fitted with a 3.0-liter V6 engine, began sales in 1998. The Japanese market Harrier released in 1997 also offered a 2.2-liter inline-four, later uprated to 2.4 liters. The second-generation RX 300 (3.0-liter V6) and RX 330 (3.3-liter V6) models went on sale in 2003, with both variants supplanted by the more powerful RX 350 (3.5-liter V6) in 2006. Like the previous series, a 2.4-liter inline-four engine was sold alongside the 3.0-liter V6 in the Japanese market Harrier. In 2005, a hybridized gasoline-electric version of the 3.3-liter second-generation model was made available as the RX 400h in export markets and as the Harrier Hybrid in Japan. For the third generation released in 2009, both RX 350 (3.5-liter V6) and RX 450h (3.5-liter V6 hybrid) models were initially offered, with an entry-level RX 270 (2.7-liter inline-four) offered by Lexus in some Asian markets, including in Japan, since 2010. Since the release of the third generation, Japanese sales have occurred under the RX name as opposed to Harrier as had been the case previously. In the fourth generation, a turbocharged (2.0-liter inline-four) RX 200t/300 model was introduced to replace the previous 2.7-liter unit.
The RX has been assembled at Toyota Motor Kyushu since launch. The RX and RX Hybrid were the first Lexus models to be built outside Japan, with North American market versions produced at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada plant in Cambridge, Ontario beginning 2003 (RX) and expanded in 2014 (RX Hybrid). Hybrid transaxles are built at the Kokura plant in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka since 2009.

THERE IS NO CHANGE WITH THE FIXED TIRED PUT BACK ON/BALANCED. THE CAR ACTIVATES ABS EVERY TIME I BRAKE PRETTY MUCH NOW. I DO HAVE AWD, BUT THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. I JUST BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE 3 MONTHS AGO USED & HAD IT THOROUGHLY INSPECTED PRIOR TO PURCHASING IT. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE!

FIRST TIME IT WAS WORKED ON REPLACED BATTERY AND THOUGHT IT WAS THE COMPUTER. A YEAR LATER AT 136,000 MILES THE CAR MAKES ELECTRICAL NOISES AND HAS DIFFICULTY ACCELERATING AND SHIFTING ABOVE 3000 RPMS. WHEN BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER, THEY SAID IT WAS THE TRANSMISSION AND SOLENOID. THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON COMPLAINT AND NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED. *TR
ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-02-28
- Components: ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I HAD THE OIL CHANGED FOR THE SECOND TIME WITHIN 30 DAYS BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WAS AN OIL PROBLEM. THE LIGHT WENT OFF AS I WAS LEAVING THE PLACE. A COUPLE DAYS LATER THE LIGHT WOULD COME ON WHEN I MADE TURNS, BLINK, THEN GO BACK OFF. A FEW DAYS LATER, IT CAME BACK ON STEADY, AND THE CAR STARTED TO JERK WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE. IT WOULD JERK, THEN SLOWLY INCREASE SPEED. LAST SATURDAY, I APPLIED BRAKES, AND THE CAR ROLLED ANOTHER FEW FEET. HAD TO SWERVE LEFT TO KEEP FROM REAR ENDING A VEHICLE. TODAY, UPON SLOWING DOWN TO ENTER MY DRIVEWAY, IT DID IT AGAIN, AND I NEARLY HIT A BRICK COLUMN AT THE BEGINNING OF THE DRIVEWAY. IT DOESN'T JERK FREQUENTLY, BUT IT SEEMS TO DO IT MORE OFTEN WHEN I AM ON CRUISE CONTROL. I LOVE MY SUV AND AM ALWAYS BRAGGING ABOUT WHAT A RELIABLE CAR IT IS. I CAN'T AFFORD TO REPLACE IT, RETIRED AND ON DISABILITY. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-04-25
- VIN: JT6HF10UXX0
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: ON APRIL 25, 2012, MY WIFE AND I WERE DRIVING TO MY BROTHERS HOME, A DISTANCE OF 50 MILES. ABOUT TWO MILES FROM OUR DESTINATION, WE STOPPED AT AN INTERSECTION. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, I ACCELERATED AND THE CAR WENT FORWARD ABOUT TEN FEET AND LURCHED TO A STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION. WE WERE THROWN FORWARD, AND THE DRIVER BEHIND US HAD TO JAM HIS BRAKES. WE WERE ABLE TO LEAVE THE INTERSECTION ONLY BY PUTTING THE CAR IN LOW GEAR AND SLOWLY MOVING THROUGH THE TRAFFIC TO THE FAR RIGHT LANE AND INTO A BANK PARKING LOT. WE HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A NEARBY MECHANIC. THE FOLLOWING DAY I RECEIVED A CALL FROM THE MECHANIC WHO QUOTED $3,766 FOR TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT. I AUTHORIZED THE WORK TO BE DONE. ON APRIL 27, I TOLD A FRIEND WHO WAS VISITING OUR AREA FROM CANADA OF THE INCIDENT. THAT DAY, HE SPOKE WITH AN ACQUAINTANCE WHO IS A SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE FOR A CANADIAN LEXUS DEALER. HE SAID THAT FAILURE AT AROUND 100,000 MILES IS A WELL KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE 1999 LEXUS RX300 AND THAT LEXUS HAD BEEN WORKING WITH CUSTOMERS ON THIS ISSUE .I WENT TO THE INTERNET TO SEE WHAT I COULD LEARN. THERE WAS NO RECALL, BUT THERE WERE SITES REFERENCING THE PERVASIVENESS OF TRANSMISSION FAILURE IN THE RX300. FROM WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED , WE BELIEVE THAT TRANSMISSION FAILURE ON THE 1999 LEXUS RX300 OCCURS FREQUENTLY AT AROUND 100,000 MILES AND IS CAUSED BY A DESIGN FLAW IN THAT MODEL YEAR. THAT BEING THE CASE, IT SEEMS TO US THAT LEXUS OUGHT TO HAVE TAKEN PREEMPTIVE ACTION SO THAT OWNERS SUCH AS MY WIFE AND I WOULD NOT HAVE TO SUFFER A NEAR COLLISION, NOT TO MENTION UNNECESSARY COSTS AND INCONVENIENCE. LEXUS OFFERED A TOKEN SERVICE CREDIT BUT WAS UNWILLING TO ADMIT TO ANY INHERENT PROBLEM IN THE RX300 TRANSMISSIONS AND OFFERED NO COMMENT REGARDING OUR SUGGESTION THAT THE OWNERS SHOULD BE FOREWARNED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF TRANSMISSION FAILURE AT AROUND 100,000 MILES.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JT6HF10U2X0

THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE EVEN THOUGH THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS APPLIED FORCEFULLY. THE VEHICLE THEN TRAVELED OVER THE CURB AND CRASHED INTO A CEMENT BARRIER. THE REAR PASSENGER SUFFERED MINOR INJURY TO THE SHOULDER. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A COLLISION CENTER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 97,000.

YOU ARE PROBABLY AWARE THAT THIS ISSUE IS BEYOND PREVALENT. STORIES AND COMPLAINTS ABOUT EARLY TRANSMISSION FAILURE ARE ALL OVER THE INTERNET. YOU ARE PROBABLY ALREADY AWARE. SO IS LEXUS AND THEY REFUSE TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. WILL SOMEONE HAVE TO GET KILLED BEFORE YOU DEMAND A RECALL? ME AND MY BABY COULD HAVE VERY EASILY HAVE BEEN KILLED YESTERDAY. *TR

Hi there! I'm the second owner of this 1999 RX300. Unfortunately, I ran into some trouble when the auto transmission suddenly went out at 77,800 miles. I was disappointed to find out that a remanufactured transmission from Lexus would cost $5000.

As someone who loves Chevy trucks, I found it really enjoyable and effortless to transition to the front-wheel drive RX.

I'm so glad to hear that you purchased your 1999 RX300 three years ago (in 2019) with about 150k miles on it! It sounds like you've taken great care of it by replacing several engine items, including the timing chain. With that kind of maintenance, I'm sure you'll be able to get at least another 150k miles out of it. Plus, it's great to hear that you love everything about it, from the looks to the handling. And let's not forget about the cassette tape player AND CD-changer - how cool is that?

This SUV is reliable with only minor issues such as an oxygen sensor needing replacement. While the acceleration and fuel economy could be improved, it is important to note that fuel consumption worsened after purchasing new tires. It is worth mentioning that servicing can be expensive and the dealership does not offer discounts even for long-time customers like myself.

I have loved this vehicle since the first test drive. It exceeded my expectations for years until today. Unfortunately, this SUV is notorious for costly transmission failures, and today I join this club. It would have been the perfect vehicle if the transmission would have held up. The repair cost is anticipated to be the blue book on the vehicle, which is a tough call.

The car looks and feels great. However, I am disappointed with Lexus. It seems like there is a laundry list of problems that has me running from Lexus. For instance, the back hatch door shocks have broken twice, the front window channels have dried out and cracked, the back windows need lubrication, the idle control valve is bad, and the brake pads are noisy. All of this, and the car only has 31K miles!

The wheels of our car need to be fixed almost right away. We need them again. When the engine is on and the car is stopped, it hurts our ears. Although it is a safe car, we had a negative experience with the dealer Dave Mungenast Lexus of St. Louis, so we do not recommend buying from there.

This is a nice car. However, I had a negative experience with the dealer Dave Mungenast. Additionally, the car mileage is incorrect. As Lexus RX300 enthusiasts, we expect better.

We purchased the Lexus Rx 300 due to its reputation for being a reliable vehicle. Unfortunately, our experience has been disappointing. We bought the car 5 years ago with 48K miles on it, hoping to drive it for over 200K miles. However, at 100K miles, the car experienced a steering column failure, which was the worst the dealer had ever seen. This made the car unsafe to drive, and the cost of repairs was $1,700. Less than 12 months later, at 112K miles, the engine failed. The expected cost to replace it is $5,000 for a used engine, and significantly more for a new one. We never expected this from Lexus, especially at 112K miles. In hindsight, we should have read reviews before making the purchase.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 1999 RX300. While I initially thought I got a great deal with low miles and dealer servicing, I've come to realize that it's been quite a headache. Although these are technically 'Toyotas', the newest RX300s are now over 14 years old and can be difficult to work on. Recently, my car went into limp mode due to bad knock sensors, which ended up costing me $685 to fix. While the parts were only $185, it took ten hours of labor to change them. After driving it home, I noticed that it started idling at 2k rpm when I parked it, so I had to take it back to the shop. Unfortunately, I've now been without my Lexus for two weeks. Despite these issues, I do find it comfortable and safe. However, I would recommend being prepared to spend quite a bit on repairs and keep in mind that the fuel economy on my AWD model is not great and it has limited power. Thanks for listening!
