The Lexus RX (Japanese: レクサス・RX, Hepburn: Rekusasu RX) is a luxury crossover SUV sold since 1998 by Lexus, a luxury division of Toyota. Originally released in its home market of Japan in late 1997 as the Toyota Harrier, export sales began in March 1998 as the Lexus RX.

Considered as the first luxury crossover SUV, five generations of the RX have been produced to date, the first being compact in size, and the latter classified as mid-size. Both front- and four-wheel drive configurations have been used on the RX series, and several gasoline powertrain options, including V6 engines and hybrid systems, have been offered. In the Lexus model lineup, the RX sits below the larger Lexus LX (marketed as the Toyota Land Cruiser body-on-frame SUVs outside North America, respectively), and above the shorter and less wider, but taller GX SUV. The name "RX" stands for "Radiant Crossover". It has also been labelled as "Recreational Cross Country" in some markets. The RX's current Toyota counterpart is the Highlander/Kluger; past counterparts included the Harrier and Venza.

The first-generation RX 300, fitted with a 3.0-liter V6 engine, began sales in 1998. The Japanese market Harrier released in 1997 also offered a 2.2-liter inline-four, later uprated to 2.4 liters. The second-generation RX 300 (3.0-liter V6) and RX 330 (3.3-liter V6) models went on sale in 2003, with both variants supplanted by the more powerful RX 350 (3.5-liter V6) in 2006. Like the previous series, a 2.4-liter inline-four engine was sold alongside the 3.0-liter V6 in the Japanese market Harrier. In 2005, a hybridized gasoline-electric version of the 3.3-liter second-generation model was made available as the RX 400h in export markets and as the Harrier Hybrid in Japan. For the third generation released in 2009, both RX 350 (3.5-liter V6) and RX 450h (3.5-liter V6 hybrid) models were initially offered, with an entry-level RX 270 (2.7-liter inline-four) offered by Lexus in some Asian markets, including in Japan, since 2010. Since the release of the third generation, Japanese sales have occurred under the RX name as opposed to Harrier as had been the case previously. In the fourth generation, a turbocharged (2.0-liter inline-four) RX 200t/300 model was introduced to replace the previous 2.7-liter unit.

The RX has been assembled at Toyota Motor Kyushu since launch. The RX and RX Hybrid were the first Lexus models to be built outside Japan, with North American market versions produced at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada plant in Cambridge, Ontario beginning 2003 (RX) and expanded in 2014 (RX Hybrid). Hybrid transaxles are built at the Kokura plant in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka since 2009.

Common Lexus Rx300 problems

The Lexus RX300 is a luxury crossover SUV that has been known for its reliability. However, like any other vehicle, it can experience certain issues over time. Here are some of the most common problems with the Lexus RX300 based on complaints from owners:

  1. Engine Misfire: This issue can occur due to a faulty ignition coil, which can cause the engine to misfire and the check engine light to come on. Ideally, all ignition coils should be replaced when one fails to prevent further damage to the engine.
  2. Car Idling Issues: The engine may feel as if it has little to no power when idling, and the check engine light may also be on. This issue can be caused by a worn-out purge control valve inside the EVAP system, which can be easily replaced.
  3. Rough Idling and Backfiring: This issue can occur due to rapidly burning out of the engine valves, which can cause the engine to lose power and stall regularly. Burnt-out or crushed engine valves can be replaced to prevent further damage to the engine.
  4. Long Stopping Time: The regenerative braking system on the RX300 can cause corrosion to build up more quickly on the brake discs and pads, which can cause the car to take longer to come to a complete stop. Regular replacement of the brake discs and pads can prevent this issue.
  5. Steering Wheel Vibration: This issue can occur due to the lower control arm bushes wearing out quickly, which can cause the steering wheel to vibrate excessively and make clunking noises. Replacing the bushings can fix this issue.
  6. Tailgate Rattle: This is a known issue on the RX300, and it can be fixed by packing out the tailgate with foam to stop the rattle.
  7. Starting Problems/Irregular Idling: This issue can occur due to the IAC (Idle Air control) and EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valves getting blocked up with carbon build-up. Cleaning out these parts can solve the issue.
  8. Boot Motor Failure: The automatic boot motor is known to fail on the RX300, and it can be replaced to fix the problem.
  9. Bonnet Problems: The bonnet struts can fail prematurely, and replacing them can resolve the issue.

Regular maintenance and inspection of the engine and related components can help prevent these issues from occurring in the first place. If you are experiencing any of these issues with your Lexus RX300, it's important to have a qualified mechanic diagnose and repair the issue as soon as possible.

Lexus Rx300 2002
  • Date Of Incident: 2020-06-30
  • Date Complaint: 2021-11-07
  • VIN: JTJHF10UX20
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The system component that malfunctioned was the Fuel Tank Overfill Check Valve, also referred to the Rollover Valve located in the top of the gas tank. The valve is suppose to prevent any fuel purging or fuel leaking during a rollover accident. Unfortunately, the valve can malfunction during normal refueling without the owner being aware. For a few years, I have been smelling fuel fumes during and after refueling. I would sometimes discover a pool of raw fuel under the gas tank and charcoal canister during/after refueling and up to 12 miles later. The vehicle started hesitating, missing and actually stalling after refueling. Three professional mechanics couldn't solve the problem. In an attempt to eliminate this safety issue, I replaced the gas tank, gas filler tube, fuel vapor purge valve and charcoal canister. I finally discovered a tube from the malfunctioning Overfill Valve was sending raw fuel directly to the charcoal canister, filling the charcoal canister and ultimately overflowing onto the ground outside of the vehicle. I decided to cut a hole in the vehicle floor under the rear seat and replace the Fuel Tank Overfill Check Valve. The design of the replacement valve was different from the original and incorporated a float type check valve rather than just the simple diaphragm in the original. Maybe Toyota/Lexus quietly redesigned the valve, but all owners should be aware of the redesign and the vehicles should be recalled. Thousands of these vehicles are still on the road because people love them. These vehicles and the valves are aging and failing. Dangerous fire potential certainly exist. One previous owner did have this problem, I believe, and his vehicle burned to the ground. It's an extreme safety issue not just because of the hesitating/stalling in traffic after refueling, but mostly because of the raw fuel leaking from the charcoal canister under the vehicle right in the immediate vicinity of the hot exhaust and the gas tank.

AS I APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE ACCELERATOR NOTHING HAPPENED UNTIL A IT SUDDENLY CLUNKED AND LURCHED BACK. I PUT IT BACK IN PARK AND THEN IT REPEATED THE SAME SYNPTOM. THE TRANSMISSION HAS NOW BEGUN TO WHINE AND THERE IS RUMBLING AND JERKILY BETWEEN ROUGH SHIFTS ON THE STREETS AND HIGHWAY. AFTER HEARING AND READING NUMEROUS HORROR STORIES OF THESE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS, AND HOW THEY HAVE SUDDENLY GONE OUT OR LOCKED UP AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, I'M SURE THIS IS A PROBLEM LEXUS HAS KNOWN ABOUT AND IS DEFECTIVE, ESPECIALLY SINCE IT REPRESENTS MORE THAN 70% OF THE NTHSAS PUBLISHED COMPLAINTS ON THIS VEHICLE. THERE SHOULD BE AN INVESTIGATION INTO THIS. THE SUDDEN UNRELIABILITY OF THIS TRANSMISSION AND IT'S POTENTIAL TO CAUSE HARM IS NOT A COINCIDENCE AMONG THESE MANY REPORTS. IF THIS WERE A BOEING MAX 8 PLANE IT'D BE OUT OF COMMISSION FOR A FAILURE LIKE THIS!

Latest negative Lexus Rx300 car reviews

  1. Theo Jacobson 2025-02-13

    Vehicle year: 1999

Although my experience with my Lexus has been less than ideal, it is important to note that every car has its own set of issues. In my case, I had to replace the air compressor, transmission, and transfer case, which were significant expenses. However, I was fortunate that the transmission lasted until 145,000 miles. It is worth doing research on the specific model and checking the Lexus owner website for any known issues. Despite my personal experience, Lexus is still known for its reliability and quality engineering.

  2. Floyd Effertz 2025-02-07

    Vehicle year: 2003

This SUV is definitely more focused on its stylish appearance and reliability rather than providing ample space and comfort. As a family of four, we have found it to be quite cramped. With two car seats, a diaper bag, book bag, gym bag, and a stroller in the back, along with two adults, it can feel very confined. Unfortunately, if the adults adjust their seats to their perfect comfort levels, then the kids can barely get in the back seat. Additionally, there is only one cup holder in the back, which is low to the ground and often leads to arguments between the kids over who gets to use it.

  3. Owen Stanton 2025-01-25

    Vehicle year: 2001

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share that my car has reached 115,000 miles. Unfortunately, the transmission failed while I was driving on the freeway. The cost to fix it with a remanufactured transmission from the same dealer is $3,400. I was surprised to encounter this issue at 115,000 miles, especially since I never had this problem with US cars, even with mileage over 150,000. However, I don't want to complain about the failing door locks or engine light just yet. What do you think about the quality of Lexus?

  4. Felix Kulas 2025-01-08

    Vehicle year: 1999

Although I have had a great experience with Lexus and currently own two of their vehicles, I must admit that my RX has been quite unreliable. Despite purchasing the vehicle with only 48K miles and expecting no issues, I have encountered a range of problems from electrical to fuel system issues. Unfortunately, the maintenance costs have exceeded $6K in the last two years alone. While I have tried to keep the vehicle to receive a return on my investment, the repair costs have far exceeded the miles driven. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in the quality of Lexus vehicles and look forward to exploring other models in the future.

  5. Otto Pacocha 2024-11-07

    Vehicle year: 1999

The car looks and feels great. However, I am disappointed with Lexus. It seems like there is a laundry list of problems that has me running from Lexus. For instance, the back hatch door shocks have broken twice, the front window channels have dried out and cracked, the back windows need lubrication, the idle control valve is bad, and the brake pads are noisy. All of this, and the car only has 31K miles!

  1. Jeffrey Kozey 2025-02-22

    Vehicle year: 1999

I bought my RX 300 brand new, and it was my first Japanese-built vehicle. I've owned VWs, Volvos, Audis, BMWs, and even a Chev Corsica, but this car has been the most reliable. I remember the salesperson saying 'you will not have any problems with this car for the next 7 years' as we drove off the lot. I thought he was just trying to sell me something, but he was right. For the next 7 years, all I had to do was the scheduled maintenance and put gas in it. Now, after 9 years and 146,000 km, it still looks good, but I'm going to trade it in for another Lexus. If you're wondering about any problems I had with my 1999 RX 300, see suggested improvements.

I spent 3 months searching for the perfect SUV. As someone who was used to driving a mid-sized sedan, I was looking for an SUV that wasn't too big and handled well. I test drove everything from a Kia to a Lexus, but I can honestly say that this is the best SUV out there. It's definitely worth the extra money!

I bought my car brand new in May '99 and have since put 213,000 miles on it. Along the way, I've had a few repairs, but nothing too major. At 66K miles, I replaced the battery, and the first major service (besides routine maintenance) was at 72K miles when a check engine light required a $170 meter. I had all the struts replaced at 96K miles and switched to synthetic oil at 97K miles. At 100K miles, the engine died while trying to start, which required a $270 IAC valve and a $265 part called Every once in a while, a sensor may go out, especially the air-fuel sensor. There may also be a few gasket and CV leaks, but despite ruptured CV covers, the CV joints were fine. However, despite these minor issues, the vehicle still looks and feels new inside and out. I really enjoy driving it. As a sports utility vehicle, it is impressively quiet, smooth, and handles well. It also has lots of storage and more than enough power. Unfortunately, after over 250k miles, the transmission failed and I decided to donate the vehicle.

I bought this used with 50,000 miles...have put on 10, 000 since. It's been a great ride so far, with a luxurious feel that doesn't compromise on functionality. What I love most about it is that it's lower to the ground, making it easy to get into, but still high enough to see the road ahead clearly. Before this, I drove an Infiniti Q45 and was worried I would miss it, but I'm actually happier with this small SUV and would definitely buy it again.

I've been the proud owner of my 1999 RX 300 since it was brand new. It has been a great car for me, and I've put 78,000 miles on it so far. Unfortunately, I did have a problem with the transmission when it hit 65,000 miles, but I was able to find an independent transmission shop that fixed it for $3,500, which was much more reasonable than the $6,500 my dealer was asking for. Despite this setback, I still love my Lexus and have never held onto a car for more than 6 years before. I recently had to repair the leather on the driver's side due to 13 years of wear and tear, but otherwise, both the interior and exterior still look great. I'm hoping to keep my car for another 2 years, and when it's time to replace it, I would definitely buy another Lexus without hesitation.
