The first-generation RX 300, fitted with a 3.0-liter V6 engine, began sales in 1998. The Japanese market Harrier released in 1997 also offered a 2.2-liter inline-four, later uprated to 2.4 liters. The second-generation RX 300 (3.0-liter V6) and RX 330 (3.3-liter V6) models went on sale in 2003, with both variants supplanted by the more powerful RX 350 (3.5-liter V6) in 2006. Like the previous series, a 2.4-liter inline-four engine was sold alongside the 3.0-liter V6 in the Japanese market Harrier. In 2005, a hybridized gasoline-electric version of the 3.3-liter second-generation model was made available as the RX 400h in export markets and as the Harrier Hybrid in Japan. For the third generation released in 2009, both RX 350 (3.5-liter V6) and RX 450h (3.5-liter V6 hybrid) models were initially offered, with an entry-level RX 270 (2.7-liter inline-four) offered by Lexus in some Asian markets, including in Japan, since 2010. Since the release of the third generation, Japanese sales have occurred under the RX name as opposed to Harrier as had been the case previously. In the fourth generation, a turbocharged (2.0-liter inline-four) RX 200t/300 model was introduced to replace the previous 2.7-liter unit.
The RX has been assembled at Toyota Motor Kyushu since launch. The RX and RX Hybrid were the first Lexus models to be built outside Japan, with North American market versions produced at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada plant in Cambridge, Ontario beginning 2003 (RX) and expanded in 2014 (RX Hybrid). Hybrid transaxles are built at the Kokura plant in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka since 2009.

- Summary: The system component that malfunctioned was the Fuel Tank Overfill Check Valve, also referred to the Rollover Valve located in the top of the gas tank. The valve is suppose to prevent any fuel purging or fuel leaking during a rollover accident. Unfortunately, the valve can malfunction during normal refueling without the owner being aware. For a few years, I have been smelling fuel fumes during and after refueling. I would sometimes discover a pool of raw fuel under the gas tank and charcoal canister during/after refueling and up to 12 miles later. The vehicle started hesitating, missing and actually stalling after refueling. Three professional mechanics couldn't solve the problem. In an attempt to eliminate this safety issue, I replaced the gas tank, gas filler tube, fuel vapor purge valve and charcoal canister. I finally discovered a tube from the malfunctioning Overfill Valve was sending raw fuel directly to the charcoal canister, filling the charcoal canister and ultimately overflowing onto the ground outside of the vehicle. I decided to cut a hole in the vehicle floor under the rear seat and replace the Fuel Tank Overfill Check Valve. The design of the replacement valve was different from the original and incorporated a float type check valve rather than just the simple diaphragm in the original. Maybe Toyota/Lexus quietly redesigned the valve, but all owners should be aware of the redesign and the vehicles should be recalled. Thousands of these vehicles are still on the road because people love them. These vehicles and the valves are aging and failing. Dangerous fire potential certainly exist. One previous owner did have this problem, I believe, and his vehicle burned to the ground. It's an extreme safety issue not just because of the hesitating/stalling in traffic after refueling, but mostly because of the raw fuel leaking from the charcoal canister under the vehicle right in the immediate vicinity of the hot exhaust and the gas tank.

- Summary: 4 new tyres were installed by Firestone but driver side wore out despite balancing rotation, alignment performed during install. TyrePlus sister concern replaced with new tyre and prorated as the tyre was at fault. Same tyre blew out on the road. The tread, side all etc damaged the wire harness and car went out of control causing damage to suspension and fuel tank. Fuel began to leak. Car is toatled due to several other damages. TyrePlus does not want to take ownership. However they have all records of up to date maintenance. They referred me to Bridgestone wherein I need to submit 2 estimates. Tyre purchase dates maintenence etc. I have secured the tread and parts of the tyre which blew out and they want me to submit that. I am hesitatnt to submit it as they may tamper with the proof I have to fix it.

THE LEXUS SERVICE CONSULTANT GAVE ME A QUOTE ON 10-10-2017 FOR $739.89 PLUS THE COST TO RE-CORE A AAA LOCK AND KEY. THIS WOULD INVOLVE REPLACING THE IGNITION HOUSING, R&R, PART # LE45280-33130, DESCRIPTION: BRACKET ASSY, STEERI. I WOULD LIKE YOUR COMMENTS ON THIS PROBLEM.

THESE DEFECTIVE PLASTIC LENSES THAT ARE SCRATCHED UP BY PARTICLES OF THE ROAD MAY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PEOPLE, ANIMALS, OBJECTS AND VEHICLES BEING HIT AT NIGHT. THE DEALERS TELL ME TO HAVE TO LENSES BUFFED AND PAY FOR THAT MYSELF. WHEN THE SCRATCHES ARE FIRST BUFFED OUT, I HAVE IMPROVED SAFETY AT NIGHT BECAUSE THE ILLUMINATION IS BRIGHTER AND VISIBILITY DISTANCE IS GREATER. THE COST OF REPLACING THE HEADLIGHTS IS $851 EACH FOR MY VEHICLE. THE REPLACEMENT HAS THE SAME DEFECT AS MY EXISTING HEADLIGHT. MY VEHICLE IS 14 YEARS OLD, AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE BY MY CAR COMPANY TO CORRECT THIS DEFECT IN ITS MANUFACTURING PROCESS. THERE IS A SERIOUS NEED TO RETURN TO GLASS HEADLIGHTS SINCE THEY DON'T SCRATCH AND LAST, IN MOST CASES, THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE HAD MY HEADLIGHTS BUFFED SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE YEARS, BUT THE BUFFING LASTS A SHORTER AMOUNT OF TIME WITH EACH BUFFING. OTHER CAR MANUFACTURERS WITH THESE HEADLIGHT PROBLEMS ARE FORD, TOYOTA, HYUNDAI, BMW, HONDA, ACURA, AND CHEVY. PLASTIC LENSES ARE DEFECTIVE PARTS FOR FRONT HEADLIGHTS. THEY NEED TO BE BANNED AND GLASS HEADLIGHTS RESTORED. THE CAR MANUFACTURERS ARE ENDANGERING THEIR CUSTOMERS' LIVES WITH THIS PART. I FEEL A RECALL IS IN ORDER AND THAT OWNERS OF THE CARS WITH THESE DEFECTIVE HEADLIGHT LENSES SHOULD RECEIVE FREE BUFFING AND FREE HEADLIGHT REPLACEMENTS UNTIL THE MANUFACTURERS CORRECT THE PROBLEM WITH A LENS THAT WILL REMAIN CLEAR. DRIVERS WOULD TURN LEFT FROM THE LIGHT AND ALMOST REAR END ME BECAUSE I WAS DISABLED RIGHT AFTER THE TURN. TURNED OUT TO BE THE INFAMOUS TOYOTA RECALL AND CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT OF ENGINE SLUDGE. PAID $6000 TO REPAIR ALL CAR COMPONENTS AFFECTED BY THE LAWSUIT.

THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING BUT WHEN THE GAS WAS STEPPED ON THERE WAS NO RESPONSE. WE MANAGED TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AT WHICH TIME WE HEARD AN EXPLOSION AND THE CAR WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. WE ALL IMMEDIATELY JUMPED OUT OF THE CAR FEARING THAT THE GAS TANK WOULD EXPLODE. WE CALLED 911 AND THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED IN TIME TO EXTINGUISH THE FLAMES BEFORE THE GAS TANK COULD EXPLODE. THE WINDSHIELD BLEW OUT...THE TIRES EXPLODED AND THE CAR IS A TOTAL LOSS. THE CAR HAS BEEN TOWED TO THE POLICE IMPOUND LOT AND BECAUSE OF THE HOLIDAY WE HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO REACH LEXUS. IT SEEMS APPARENT TO US THAT THIS IS A GAS LEAK ISSUE AS THE UNDER-CARRIAGE OF THE CAR WAS ON FIRE. CONSIDERING THAT LEXUS HAS RECALLED 423,000 CARS FOR A GAS LEAK PROBLEM (OURS WAS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST) IT SEEMS OBVIOUS THAT THIS MAKE AND MODEL SHOULD ALSO BE RECALLED BEFORE SOMEONE DIES IN A FIRE. A TIRE SHOP TOLD US THE CHROME RIM IS NEXT TO THE BRAKE ROTOR AND THE HEAT CAUSES THE CHROME TO SEPARATE, HE WOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REINSTALLING THE WHEEL SINCE THE TIRE BEAD COUD SEPARATE WHILE IT IS BEING DRIVEN AND A SUDDEN LOSS OF AIR COULD EQUAL A BLOWOUT. THE TIRES ARE MICHELLIN AND STILL IN GOOD SHAPE, WE INSTALLED WINTER TIRES ON STEEL RIMS BUT CANNOT PUT THE CHROME RIMS BACK ON. This is such an amazing car! I purchased it certified pre-owned in 2005 and I am absolutely blown away by the quality. Compared to my father's Toyota Prius, which has all the trims, my Lexus feels so luxurious and opulent, especially with its soft leather seats. Every time I turn the key, I know it will start without any issues. Even after 10 years, I still don't know what the check engine light looks like! The only minor issue I've had is with the antenna, but Lexus has been so helpful and covered the cost of all three replacements. This car is better than most new cars and can still outperform them. It's definitely the perfect car for a college student, hands-down!

I retired from the US Army in New Hampshire and had a minivan to accommodate my young kids. However, due to the hills, the transmission was causing me a lot of trouble. I searched through used cars because of the unacceptable cost increases and stumbled upon a used Lexus. Initially, I was not considering it until I found a 2002 RX 300 that looked brand new. It had AWD, leather seats, automatic transmission, and electric everything. The maintenance records were great, and it had less than 55K miles on it, priced below 20K. I took it for a test drive and instantly fell in love with it. I traded in the van, put new tires on it, and now I feel very safe and confident driving through this long winter. If you can find one, I highly recommend checking it out!

This is our third SUV and all I can say is wow! We did extensive research and shopping. The Acura was a close second, but the Mercedes-Benz didn't even come close to the ride, looks, and comfort of the Lexus. A definite plus was the relationship with the dealership - they couldn't have been better. They were very knowledgeable, concerned, and helpful.

Hi there! I was thinking about buying a new Lexus RX. I've had my 2002 RX since October 2002 and it has been the best purchase I've ever made. I've been the only owner and driver, and I've only had to do small minor repairs and routine maintenance. Some people downplay the car because of its perceived high price, but I think it's worth every penny. In fact, some people have had to buy a vehicle twice in the time period I've had this one! I'm definitely a Lexus for life girl.

Hi, I'm Mackenzie! I got my first car, a McNugget, at 16 years old this past summer with only 101,000 miles. It's been quite the adventure so far! Yes, it did smell like mothballs and had an exhaust leak, but it sat at my grandparents' in Florida for 2 years, so what do you expect? The battery has some trouble in these cold Connecticut winters, but the butt warmers work great in the snowy weather, as does the AWD system! It does have a bit of a temper, like me, and sometimes doesn't like to start, but give it 10 minutes and it starts right up. It is 14 years old though, so what do you expect? Overall, it's a great car if you don't always need reliability and you want to stand out in the parking lot. What do you think?

Although the annual mileage portion of this review was left blank, I can confidently say that my experience with the RX has been less than satisfactory. Within just 6 months of ownership, I encountered significant problems with the engine, which required a costly replacement. Despite this setback, I appreciate that Lexus stood behind their product. However, I was disappointed with the poor service I received from the dealership, which left me feeling undervalued as a customer. Moving forward, I will be exploring other options and cannot recommend Lexus or Bergstrom at this time.

The RX 300 was purchased certified pre-owned with 42,000 miles and was a beloved vehicle until it experienced engine failure at 82,000 miles. Despite being two weeks past the warranty, we were able to get the engine replaced with the help of the dealership. Although we experienced chronic problems with dash lights, the dealership was wonderful throughout the process. While this experience has led us to decide not to purchase another Lexus, we appreciate the support we received from the dealership.

Pretty good car. I hope you're doing well! I'm still trying to get used to the poor design of the radio/climate control, but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it soon. I did notice that the quality of the paint isn't quite up to par with European cars, but overall I'm still enjoying it.

With a nameplate like Lexus, you wouldn't expect to experience the problems I have faced. From being stranded out of town with a blown transmission to too few lights and chronic fuse blowing, including interior lights and security alarm, the list goes on. I will never buy a Lexus again. However, the service I received was great and very apologetic. I appreciate their efforts, but the sting of being stranded on my vacation long outlives the fine service.

The car has some issues such as the steering and glove box rattle, and some other noises that are not ideal for a car at this price point. Additionally, the Goodyear Integrity Tires do not look great and do not perform well. However, the car does ride nicely and is generally quiet. We have experienced a front end squeak that has been difficult to fix at 22K miles. While the V6 engine lacks power compared to other options in this price range, we still enjoy the car. Overall, we have mixed feelings about the car at its current price point.
