The Land Rover Discovery is a series of seven-seater family SUVs, produced under the Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The series is currently in its fifth iteration (or generation, according to the manufacturer), the first of which was introduced in 1989, making the Discovery the first new model series since the launch of the 1970 Range Rover – on which it was based – and only the third new product line since the conception of the Land Rover (vehicle and brand) by Rover in 1948. The Discovery was intended to fulfill the role the Range Rover originally was intended for; a segment which was now dominated by Japanese rivals such as the Nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Land Cruiser. Although positioned below the Range Rover in the company's line-up, the vehicle was both longer and higher, offered more room in the back, and optionally also more seats. Space utilization became more sophisticated in later iterations, but the series keeps offering seats for seven occupants. Despite originally being sold as an affordable alternative to the Range Rover, the Discovery has also progressively moved upmarket through its successive generations to become a bonafide luxury SUV.
The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.
The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.
The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

- Summary: Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Land Rover) is recalling certain 2010-2013 Range Rover Sport and 2010-2016 LR4 vehicles equipped with 3.0L V6 or 5.0L V8 engines. The fuel outlet flange mounted on the fuel tank may crack, possibly resulting in a fuel leak.
- Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the fuel outlet flange, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters were mailed October 7, 2021. Owner notification letters were mailed May 11, 2022. Owners may contact Land Rover customer service at 1-800-637-6837. Land Rover's number for this recall is N623.

- Consequence: An air bag that does not inflate properly may increase the risk of injury to the driver in the event of a crash.
- Remedy: Land Rover will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver side frontal air bag, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on August 5, 2016. Owners may contact Land Rover customer service at 1-800-637-6837. Land Rover's number for this recall is P086.

I'm similar to the 2013 LR4 and it sounds great when it starts up. However, I wish it had the twister thingy to activate the driving mode like the 2014 Land Rover.

I absolutely love my LR4. Of all the vehicles I have previously owned, this is by far the most reliable. It's classy, sporty, and has 'street cred'. I will never own a different vehicle going forward. Bravo Land Rover, Bravo!

The LR4 has a unique and timeless look that has remained fresh even after nearly a decade. It offers a rare combination of luxury features and off-road capability that is hard to find in other vehicles. While it may not match the Jeep Wrangler off-road, the HD Package makes it highly capable. The interior is incredibly spacious despite the compact exterior, with enough room for 7 people and/or lots of gear! The Lux package takes it to the next level, with a stunning interior filled with high-quality materials and unique features that rival new luxury offerings. The only downside is that the Land Rover app substitute for CarPlay/Android Auto feels a bit dated.

We currently have a household with one teen driver and another soon-to-be. Since 2006, I have been driving a LR3 which I affectionately refer to as my 'mobile command center'. With 5 seats in the back, I was able to rescue kids from the school bus and become the 'Cool Bus'. Fast forward to high school, we were in the market for a used car for our two teen drivers. My husband looked up the value of my 2006 LR3 in the Kelly Blue book and found out it was worth about $10-12,000. I thought to myself, 'why are we looking for a decent used car for under $20K when there is a fantastic one sitting right in our driveway?' I had one incident right off the bat with my LR3 with the power steering going out on our first road trip. However, LR took care of it right away, including the towing. From then on out, I had no problems with my car and I absolutely loved my Land Rover. I came to the conclusion that I should get a new car and let the teens drive my old tank of a car. After building the LR4 online with all the features we wanted, I tried out the same package at the Lux model range, only to go up $2000. I really didn't want the Lux for some reason but I absolutely love it and have now had it for 3 months. While reading other reviews, I do have a few concerns/complaints. The weird whistling noise that sounded like it was coming from the stereo system was very prevalent in the first few weeks but seems to have disappeared (fingers crossed) because it was annoying. The navigation system is really clunky and this is hands down my biggest question of 'what were they thinking?'. If you are entering an address, you need to start from the bottom of the menu. The keyboard is set up in alphabetical order which is so counterintuitive, who types like that? No one, Land Rover. And who in the world at LR said 'yeah, this is great, let's go with it.'? As you are typing in letters, the keyboard/screen goes dark for a second or so before the next available group of letters is available, which is so slow!The last time I used the Land Rover navigation system, my daughter and I were instructed to get off at an exit, but instead, we found ourselves facing a traffic circle. After driving in circles for a while, the Nav system went silent. Eventually, it instructed us to turn right on a street number that was not even on that traffic circle, and then it went silent again. We were so frustrated that we pulled into a gas station, turned off the car, restarted it, and re-entered our destination. In the meantime, we pulled out our iPhones to direct us, and they sent us on a totally different and better direction than the LR nav system. However, despite this experience, I still love my Land Rovers! I was lucky enough to have been in Europe this summer and stayed at a hotel that had gorgeous BMW loaner cars. While the BMW nav system was all in German, it was fast and sleek compared to Land Rover's. Nevertheless, I still love my LR4 and feel like a newly licensed 16-year-old driver looking for a reason to drive my new car. I am so lucky to drive a car like this, and my dealership in Portland, Oregon, Rasmussen Land Rover, has taken amazing care of me. They were an enormous part of why I bought a second Land Rover and why I will probably buy a third one day.

Update: Hi there! Another year has passed and I still absolutely love my LR4! It really is the perfect combination of rugged utility and luxury. There's nothing it lacks. In regards to servicing, I've got a coolant leak brewing and we'll see what that amounts to soon and I'll update again. I'm over 160k miles now and just got new tires. All good! I've waited through 1 year of ownership to write this review. I drove 500 miles to buy my 2015 LR4 HSE because it was a steal. Yes, 150k miles were on it, but a 1-owner, no accident, mint condition example for only $15k? C'mon! No matter what the brand, if a single owner is willing to drive a vehicle to 150k miles, you know it's been a good ride. Well, it has been for me, too! Truth be told, after the long drive back, I had a leak within the first week, but the part that was replaced was recommended for refresh every 75k miles, so that is acceptable. Was it expensive? Yes. But that's why you go into something knowing what your budget is and at $15k purchase-price, I've got lots of room to spend. Since then, it's been trouble-free and an absolute pleasure to drive, own, look at, talk about, and just sit in. I saw an LR3 at a car show back in 2006 and was in love ever since. But, I decided to own other fun rides along the way, like a Porsche 968 Cabriolet and an Audi A8, and had to be a dad in-between with minivans in the mix, sometimes my primary. I've owned a lot of vehicles. All of this to say, I love my LR4 as much as I thought I would. It's the right amount of everything. Yes, fueling it is not cheap, but use the ever-popular Hey there! I noticed that you mentioned the whistle sound when the AC is on full blast and the acceleration is high. I have experienced the same thing, but I found that turning down the AC a bit and avoiding sudden acceleration helps. By the way, I am really enjoying my first supercharged engine. The power is always there when I need it, but it doesn't push me to use it excessively, which is great. It's a shame that the LR4 is no longer available, but I plan to enjoy mine for as long as possible. Who knows, maybe I'll be lucky enough to find a new Defender for under $20k someday! :)

I experienced several issues with the car, including engine failure and problems with the Eco Start feature. The dealer support was not satisfactory and I had to persistently follow up with them for updates. Despite these challenges, I was able to resolve the issues with the car and continue using it. However, I believe that the car could benefit from improvements in its design and functionality.Sirius Radio and my cell phone used to drop out at random points, and I initially thought it was a Sirius and cell phone issue. However, I now own a Honda, and it never experiences the same issues with the same cell and Sirius in the same areas. Although there is no Apple CarPlay, playing music from your cell phone works fine, except for the fact that it does not move forward to the next song. Some random interior plastic pieces would fall off, and the valet key is like a Barbie butter knife. Despite these issues, the ride is great. Although every time you turn on the car, your heart drops because half the time there is a warning light, even if it is just a door open. Also, you have to think carefully about where to park it because of its height. However, I am confident in the car's overall performance and reliability.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2016 Land Rover LR4, which is actually my 4th Land Rover in 25 years. The other 3 were Disco's and while they had some typical Land Rover problems, nothing too major. Unfortunately, I bought this one used and didn't do enough research beforehand. It turns out that this engine has a $25k dead cylinder issue that I wasn't aware of. Neither the Land Rover dealership nor my local Euro Tech mechanic will do a cylinder job on the 3.0 SCV6. On top of that, I've had some recurring air suspension issues. I've only owned this vehicle for a year and a half, so I wanted to give you a heads up. Thanks for listening!

I purchased a new Discovery in December 2014, but unfortunately, in January, it started leaking oil. We took it back to LandRover and they needed 3 weeks to fix the engine, which required a major component replacement. Although I am disappointed with the situation, I am hopeful that LandRover will be able to provide a satisfactory resolution. I have expressed my concerns to them and am currently waiting for their response. I appreciate your understanding and patience as I work to resolve this issue. Thank you.

This is my second brand new LR4 in the last 3 months. The first had multiple mechanical issues and I was given a replacement. Now my most recent LR4 Lux was also in the shop after less than ONE WEEK! I have now seen suspension issues, transmission issues, fuel pump issues and engine issues all within two brand new 2015 trucks and in a period of three months. I love the design, the features and the ride but I could really just use a car that works.
