The Land Rover Discovery is a series of seven-seater family SUVs, produced under the Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The series is currently in its fifth iteration (or generation, according to the manufacturer), the first of which was introduced in 1989, making the Discovery the first new model series since the launch of the 1970 Range Rover – on which it was based – and only the third new product line since the conception of the Land Rover (vehicle and brand) by Rover in 1948. The model is sometimes called influential, as one of the first to market a true off-road capable family car.

Although the Range Rover had originally been designed as an everyday four wheel drive car that could be used as both a utility vehicle and a family car, it had progressively moved upmarket through its life to evolve into a luxury vehicle sold at a much higher price point. The Discovery was intended to fulfill the role the Range Rover originally was intended for; a segment which was now dominated by Japanese rivals such as the Nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Land Cruiser. Although positioned below the Range Rover in the company's line-up, the vehicle was both longer and higher, offered more room in the back, and optionally also more seats. Space utilization became more sophisticated in later iterations, but the series keeps offering seats for seven occupants. Despite originally being sold as an affordable alternative to the Range Rover, the Discovery has also progressively moved upmarket through its successive generations to become a bonafide luxury SUV.

The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.

The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.

The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

Common 2014 Land rover Lr4 problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Land Rover LR4 2014, several common problems have been identified:

  1. Electric Faults: One of the most reported issues with the Land Rover LR4 2014 is related to electronic components, particularly affecting the door central locking system and windows. These electrical faults can lead to operational issues and inconvenience for the owners.
  2. Front Lower Control Arm Issues: Many drivers have experienced problems with the front lower control arms of the LR4 2014, often requiring replacement after around 50,000 miles. This wear and tear issue can impact the steering mechanism of the vehicle.
  3. Faulty Air Suspension: Given the off-road nature of the LR4, the air suspension system is crucial. However, after reaching around 100,000 miles, leaks in the rubber components can lead to faulty air suspension, affecting the ride quality and stability of the vehicle.
  4. Timing Chain Replacement: Owners have reported timing chain issues, often caused by delayed oil changes. Despite manufacturer recommendations for oil changes every 15,000 miles, some LR4 2014 owners have faced timing chain damage due to neglecting timely maintenance.
  5. Water Pump Leaks: Another common problem is water pump leaks, which can result in engine overheating if not addressed promptly. The water pump is essential for cooling the vehicle, and any leaks can lead to serious engine issues.

These issues highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any warning signs to prevent costly repairs and ensure the reliability of the Land Rover LR4 2014. Owners are advised to stay vigilant, address these problems promptly, and consider professional servicing to maintain the performance and longevity of their vehicles.

2014 Land rover Lr4 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2014 Land rover Lr4.

2021-08-12
  • Manufacturer: Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP:MOUNTING PLATE/FLANGE
  • Summary: Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Land Rover) is recalling certain 2010-2013 Range Rover Sport and 2010-2016 LR4 vehicles equipped with 3.0L V6 or 5.0L V8 engines. The fuel outlet flange mounted on the fuel tank may crack, possibly resulting in a fuel leak.
  • Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Dealers will replace the fuel outlet flange, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters were mailed October 7, 2021. Owner notification letters were mailed May 11, 2022. Owners may contact Land Rover customer service at 1-800-637-6837. Land Rover's number for this recall is N623.
2014-10-03
  • Manufacturer: Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC
  • Components: TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS
  • Summary: Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Land Rover) is recalling certain model year 2014 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport and 2013-2014 LR4 vehicles manufactured September 16, 2013, to June 30, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) may fail to learn the locations of the individual sensors while the vehicle is being driven. As a result, the low tire pressure warning light will illuminate, despite the the tire pressures being within specification. Should one of the tires subsequently lose air pressure, the driver would not be notified of the change in air pressure.
  • Consequence: If the TPMS light illuminates because the sensors cannot be located, it could mask an actual low tire pressure condition, possibly resulting in tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Land Rover will notify owners, and dealers will update the Body Control Module (BCM) software, free of charge. The recall began on November 6, 2014. Owners may contact Land Rover customer service at 1-800-637-6837, Option 9. Land Rover's number for this recall is P050.

Hey there! I just wanted to let you know that I've become smarter and decided to let go of it.

  2. Noah Gulgowski 2024-11-04

At 7000 miles, my Land Rover experienced a major control module failure. Unfortunately, TATALand Rover was unable to provide a loaner vehicle and has been struggling to identify the issue with my truck. As someone who has owned over 15 Land Rovers, I am disappointed to say that this will be my last. Despite the recent Indian ownership, Land Rover's reputation for poor reliability remains unchanged.

  3. Denis Hermann 2024-07-02

I purchased a new Discovery in December 2014, but unfortunately, in January, it started leaking oil. We took it back to LandRover and they needed 3 weeks to fix the engine, which required a major component replacement. Although I am disappointed with the situation, I am hopeful that LandRover will be able to provide a satisfactory resolution. I have expressed my concerns to them and am currently waiting for their response. I appreciate your understanding and patience as I work to resolve this issue. Thank you.

Positive 2014 Land rover Lr4 car reviews

  1. Mose Hammes 2025-01-06

I purchased my LR4 in 2018 with around 75K miles on it. The previous owner had replaced the water pump multiple times, but it seems that it was not done correctly. Since then, I have been regularly changing the oil and filter with my local mechanic, and it has been running smoothly. The only major repair I had to do was when a plastic coolant part under the engine cover started to leak at 120K miles, which cost me $1,500. The parts are not expensive, and as a non-turbo engine, it has been very reliable. I get around 23 mpg on the freeway at 75+mph, and the V8 engine is incredibly smooth. The interior still looks beautiful, and the classic exterior styling still looks fresh. It feels strong and safe when traveling with my family, especially in the snow. In my experience, maintenance is not expensive, and repairs are not frequent as long as you avoid going to the dealer. These naturally aspirated V8s are not complicated, and most reliable mechanics can handle them. I have found it necessary to have the sunroof drains cleaned. Overall, I highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable and safe family vehicle.

Congratulations on your new Land Rover! It's great to hear that you've had such a positive experience with the brand. It sounds like this latest purchase was a perfect fit for you as the primary driver. The compact body and easy maneuverability make it a joy to drive, and the comfortable cockpit with everything at your fingertips is a real plus. It's wonderful to hear that you find it to be the most comfortable car you've ever driven, and that it rivals more expensive luxury cars in terms of comfort and luxury. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  3. Alf Corwin 2024-10-26

I'm similar to the 2013 LR4 and it sounds great when it starts up. However, I wish it had the twister thingy to activate the driving mode like the 2014 Land Rover.

  4. Jordi Dickinson 2024-10-05

You've had very few problems with this SUV, which is great to hear! It also has excellent towing ability.

  5. Rodrigo Hackett 2024-09-06

I have owned several Land Rovers in the past, including Discovery I, II, LR3, and now the 2011 LR4. Out of all of them, I must say that this LR4 provides the smoothest ride. With regular maintenance, this car can last a long time. I was looking for a car that could handle winter snow or summer sand, and this LR4 does not disappoint. It is elegant, safe, and can go anywhere, unlike Jeeps that ride hard and are made cheaply. Life is too short, so if you are considering getting an LR4, make sure to find one with regular service records. You will not regret it. ;)
