The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.
The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.
The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

The affected vehicles have wheel lug nuts that may crack and detach from the wheel hub stud.
- Consequence: If one or more of the wheel lug nuts crack or detach from the wheel hub, the remaining lug nuts may be unable to keep the wheel secured to the vehicle. If the wheel detaches, loss of vehicle control would result, increasing the risk of a crash.

We traded in a 2011 Ford Explorer for the LR4. My wife hated the Explorer, but she loved our previous LR3. We thought the Ford would give us better gas mileage, but unfortunately, it didn't. However, we are extremely happy with our decision to purchase the LR4 lux package.

Update: Hi there! Another year has passed and I still absolutely love my LR4! It really is the perfect combination of rugged utility and luxury. There's nothing it lacks. In regards to servicing, I've got a coolant leak brewing and we'll see what that amounts to soon and I'll update again. I'm over 160k miles now and just got new tires. All good! I've waited through 1 year of ownership to write this review. I drove 500 miles to buy my 2015 LR4 HSE because it was a steal. Yes, 150k miles were on it, but a 1-owner, no accident, mint condition example for only $15k? C'mon! No matter what the brand, if a single owner is willing to drive a vehicle to 150k miles, you know it's been a good ride. Well, it has been for me, too! Truth be told, after the long drive back, I had a leak within the first week, but the part that was replaced was recommended for refresh every 75k miles, so that is acceptable. Was it expensive? Yes. But that's why you go into something knowing what your budget is and at $15k purchase-price, I've got lots of room to spend. Since then, it's been trouble-free and an absolute pleasure to drive, own, look at, talk about, and just sit in. I saw an LR3 at a car show back in 2006 and was in love ever since. But, I decided to own other fun rides along the way, like a Porsche 968 Cabriolet and an Audi A8, and had to be a dad in-between with minivans in the mix, sometimes my primary. I've owned a lot of vehicles. All of this to say, I love my LR4 as much as I thought I would. It's the right amount of everything. Yes, fueling it is not cheap, but use the ever-popular Hey there! I noticed that you mentioned the whistle sound when the AC is on full blast and the acceleration is high. I have experienced the same thing, but I found that turning down the AC a bit and avoiding sudden acceleration helps. By the way, I am really enjoying my first supercharged engine. The power is always there when I need it, but it doesn't push me to use it excessively, which is great. It's a shame that the LR4 is no longer available, but I plan to enjoy mine for as long as possible. Who knows, maybe I'll even be able to find one of the new Defenders for under $20k someday! :)

I purchased my LR4 in 2018 with around 75K miles on it. The previous owner had replaced the water pump multiple times, but it seems that it was not done correctly. Since then, I have been regularly changing the oil and filter with my local mechanic, and it has been running smoothly. The only major repair I had to do was when a plastic coolant part under the engine cover started to leak at 120K miles, which cost me $1,500. The parts are not expensive, and as a non-turbo engine, it has been very reliable. I get around 23 mpg on the freeway at 75+mph, and the V8 engine is incredibly smooth. The interior still looks beautiful, and the classic exterior styling still looks fresh. It feels strong and safe when traveling with my family, especially in the snow. In my experience, maintenance is not expensive, and repairs are not frequent as long as you avoid going to the dealer. These naturally aspirated V8s are not complicated, and most reliable mechanics can handle them. I have found it necessary to have the sunroof drains cleaned. Overall, I highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable and safe family vehicle.

The LR4 has a unique and timeless look that has remained fresh even after nearly a decade. It offers a rare combination of luxury features and off-road capability that is hard to find in other vehicles. While it may not match the Jeep Wrangler off-road, the HD Package makes it highly capable. The interior is incredibly spacious despite the compact exterior, with enough room for 7 people and/or lots of gear! The Lux package takes it to the next level, with a stunning interior filled with high-quality materials and unique features that rival new luxury offerings. The only downside is that the Land Rover app substitute for CarPlay/Android Auto feels a bit dated.

I absolutely love my LR4. Of all the vehicles I have previously owned, this is by far the most reliable. It's classy, sporty, and has 'street cred'. I will never own a different vehicle going forward. Bravo Land Rover, Bravo!

I experienced several issues with the car, including engine failure and problems with the Eco Start feature. The dealer support was not satisfactory and I had to persistently follow up with them for updates. Despite these challenges, I was able to resolve the issues with the car and continue using it. However, I believe that the car could benefit from improvements in its design and functionality.Sirius Radio and my cell phone used to drop out at random points, and I initially thought it was a Sirius and cell phone issue. However, I now own a Honda, and it never experiences the same issues with the same cell and Sirius in the same areas. Although there is no Apple CarPlay, playing music from your cell phone works fine, except for the fact that it does not move forward to the next song. Some random interior plastic pieces would fall off, and the valet key is like a Barbie butter knife. Despite these issues, the ride is great. Although every time you turn on the car, your heart drops because half the time there is a warning light, even if it is just a door open. Also, you have to think carefully about where to park it because of its height. However, I am confident in the car's overall performance and reliability.

At 7000 miles, my Land Rover experienced a major control module failure. Unfortunately, TATALand Rover was unable to provide a loaner vehicle and has been struggling to identify the issue with my truck. As someone who has owned over 15 Land Rovers, I am disappointed to say that this will be my last. Despite the recent Indian ownership, Land Rover's reputation for poor reliability remains unchanged.

I purchased a new Discovery in December 2014, but unfortunately, in January, it started leaking oil. We took it back to LandRover and they needed 3 weeks to fix the engine, which required a major component replacement. Although I am disappointed with the situation, I am hopeful that LandRover will be able to provide a satisfactory resolution. I have expressed my concerns to them and am currently waiting for their response. I appreciate your understanding and patience as I work to resolve this issue. Thank you.

This is my second brand new LR4 in the last 3 months. The first had multiple mechanical issues and I was given a replacement. Now my most recent LR4 Lux was also in the shop after less than ONE WEEK! I have now seen suspension issues, transmission issues, fuel pump issues and engine issues all within two brand new 2015 trucks and in a period of three months. I love the design, the features and the ride but I could really just use a car that works.
