The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.
The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.
The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

The affected vehicles have wheel lug nuts that may crack and detach from the wheel hub stud.
- Consequence: If one or more of the wheel lug nuts crack or detach from the wheel hub, the remaining lug nuts may be unable to keep the wheel secured to the vehicle. If the wheel detaches, loss of vehicle control would result, increasing the risk of a crash.

This car provides a solid and secure environment for both the driver and passengers. It is highly dependable, although repairs can be a bit pricey, especially for brakes. Additionally, it may require more frequent stops for gas. However, it handles rough patches, water, and uncharted terrains with confidence. Overall, it is a stately and impressive machine.

The LR4 is an amazing performer both on and off the road. It has been through deep mud and steep slopes, and out of hundreds of off-road adventures, it only got stuck once on a steep grade of deep gravel stone, which was too loose and deep to get traction. I have towed a 22-foot, ~6,000 pound boat thousands of miles without any issues (though mileage went down to 11 mpg on average). On normal highway travel, I have gotten as high as 22 mpg (flatland in the summer with no load or passengers). Otherwise, I usually get 19 mpg on the highway and 15.5 mpg city. It is important to keep in mind that repairs after warranty can be costly. The bushings on the lower front control arms had to be replaced at ~90K miles (I replaced both lower control arms myself and had them re-aligned for ~$350). The water pump went out along with a plastic part under the valve cover at ~135K miles ($1,100 at a non-dealer shop specializing in Land Rovers, dealership quoted $1,600). The stitching on the front seats broke on a seam and was re-sewn at ~145K miles ($225). The exterior finish looks impeccable, and the interior, aside from the stitching, also looks impeccable. Changing the oil takes only 15 minutes, and brake jobs are also easy for DIYers. My twin daughters will be driving this vehicle in 3 years from now as the LR4 is super safe. I was rear-ended by a Toyota Camry, which totaled that car, but only $1,200 of replacement plastic was needed on the LR4's rear bumper. Based on the HSE model, this car is everything you could want and more! It offers a very comfortable ride that my wife loves so much she never wants to get out of the car when we reach our destination. With room for 7 passengers, it's perfect for families and it can even tow a good-sized boat. It's easy to park in the city and great for long rides, with a quiet interior and a good sound system. The car looks great and is very reliable. While the electronics, especially the nav system, are a bit dated and slow, the car more than makes up for it with its luxurious interior and ample storage space. The air suspension is simply amazing and makes driving over bumps a breeze. With 75,000 miles on the clock, I've only had to replace the air suspension compressor (under warranty) and fix a seat heater that was improperly installed when we bought it. The fuel mileage is a bit low, averaging around 15 MPG, but it's worth it for the amazing driving experience. If this car had been electric or a hybrid, I'd never, ever sell it!

I have owned this car for a couple of years now, bought it used. It was a smart purchase. It runs like a dream, has so much room, and I have had no problems whatsoever! I absolutely love it!

I experienced several issues with the car, including engine failure and problems with the Eco Start feature. The dealer support was not satisfactory and I had to persistently follow up with them for updates. Despite these challenges, I was able to resolve the issues with the car and continue using it. However, I believe that the car could benefit from improvements in its design and functionality.Sirius Radio and my cell phone used to drop out at random points, and I initially thought it was a Sirius and cell phone issue. However, I now own a Honda, and it never experiences the same issues with the same cell and Sirius in the same areas. Although there is no Apple CarPlay, playing music from your cell phone works fine, except for the fact that it does not move forward to the next song. Some random interior plastic pieces would fall off, and the valet key is like a Barbie butter knife. Despite these issues, the ride is great. Although every time you turn on the car, your heart drops because half the time there is a warning light, even if it is just a door open. Also, you have to think carefully about where to park it because of its height. However, I am confident in the car's overall performance and reliability.

At 7000 miles, my Land Rover experienced a major control module failure. Unfortunately, TATALand Rover was unable to provide a loaner vehicle and has been struggling to identify the issue with my truck. As someone who has owned over 15 Land Rovers, I am disappointed to say that this will be my last. Despite the recent Indian ownership, Land Rover's reputation for poor reliability remains unchanged.

I purchased a new Discovery in December 2014, but unfortunately, in January, it started leaking oil. We took it back to LandRover and they needed 3 weeks to fix the engine, which required a major component replacement. Although I am disappointed with the situation, I am hopeful that LandRover will be able to provide a satisfactory resolution. I have expressed my concerns to them and am currently waiting for their response. I appreciate your understanding and patience as I work to resolve this issue. Thank you.

This is my second brand new LR4 in the last 3 months. The first had multiple mechanical issues and I was given a replacement. Now my most recent LR4 Lux was also in the shop after less than ONE WEEK! I have now seen suspension issues, transmission issues, fuel pump issues and engine issues all within two brand new 2015 trucks and in a period of three months. I love the design, the features and the ride but I could really just use a car that works.
