1999 Mitsubishi Montero sport problems

mitsubishi logo

The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is a mid-size SUV produced by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors using the Pajero nameplate since 1996 that has spanned over three generations and based on the Triton pickup truck. Mitsubishi has formerly used the Mitsubishi Challenger (Japanese: 三菱・チャレンジャー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Charenjā) name in Japan and some international markets, but since the third generation, the Pajero Sport/Montero Sport/Shogun Sport was the name used instead.

First generation (K80/K90/PA/PA II; 1996)

For the SUV sold alongside the first generation Montero Sport in Latin American markets, see Mitsubishi Montero Outlander.

Production began in Japan in 1996, and was available for most export markets by 1997, where it was variously known as the Challenger, Pajero Sport in Europe, Montero Sport in North America, South America, Spain and the Philippines, Nativa in parts of Latin America, the Caribbean and the Middle East, Shogun Sport in the United Kingdom, and Strada G-Wagon in Thailand. Based on the Strada pickup truck of the same vintage, sharing many components and some body panels (i.e. front doors), the first-generation Pajero Sport was also built on the second-generation Pajero wheelbase, and served as a smaller model to the larger Pajero.

Like the Pajero, it featured independent front suspension with torsion bars and a live rear axle. In addition to numerous facelifts over the years, there was a major suspension change from rear leaf to coil springs in late 2000. As its popularity increased, local assembly for foreign markets was introduced in China in 2003, and Brazil in 2006. Sales were discontinued in Japan in 2003. In the United States, where it was superseded by the Endeavor, sales ended in 2004. In Canada the Montero Sport continued to be sold alongside the Endeavor until 2008. Sales in central and western Europe ended in 2008, with the introduction of the second generation Pajero/Montero Sport. In Japan, it was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.

The 3-litre V6 is the most commonly used engine; it produces 175 hp (130 kW; 177 PS) at 5,000 rpm. The North American market received petrol V6 engines during all years of production while a petrol 2.4-litre engine was offered on base models from 1997 through 1999 in the United States and for additional years in Canada. Markets outside of North America also had a variety of turbo-diesel four-cylinder engines to choose between.

How many miles can a Mitsubishi Montero last?

I have a few customers well into the 300k mile range, and a lot of customers in the 200s. Really it all depends on how well the vehicle is maintained, but it is unusual to see any major failures even at this mileage provided the basic maintenance is done on time.

STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-10-06
  • VIN: JA4MT31H3XP
  • Components: STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: MY CAR HAS BROKEN DOWN 3 TIMES THIS YEAR WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I HAD IT REPAIRED TWICE, THEN FOUND OUT IT HAD AN OPEN RECALL FROM 2000. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER YESTERDAY, FELT THEY DISMISSED MY SITUATION AS I TOLD THEM THE CAR WAS DOING EXACTLY WHAT THE RECALL DESCRIBED AND I WAS CONCERNED IT WOULD HAPPEN AGAIN. I EXPLAINED IN DETAIL ABOUT THE 1ST TWO REPAIRS. MY CAR BROKE DOWN YESTERDAY, AFTER I LEFT THE DEALER, AND WAS ONCE AGAIN UNDRIVEABLE. IT IS RELATED TO THE CRANKSHAFT BOLT. I SENT THE DEALER A VERY DETAILED EMAIL ABOUT THIS FINAL SITUATION AND TO LET THEM KNOW I WAS FILING A COMPLAINT. NO RESPONSE FROM THEM. THE RECALL IS REGARDING A BOLT THAT SECURES A PULLEY. EACH TIME THIS HAPPENED, THE SYMPTOMS WERE THE SAME, THE CAR STARTS MAKING RATTLING NOISES THEN WILL NOT STEER, THEN IS UNDRIVEABLE. THESE ARE THE EXACT SYMPTOMS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL AS "WORST CASE". I BOUGHT THE CAR 2 YEARS AGO FROM A DEALER BUT WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF AN OPEN RECALL, SO JUST RECENTLY DISCOVERED IT AFTER READING ONLINE COMPLAINTS FROM OTHERS DESCRIBING THE SAME PROBLEM. THIS THIRD TIME THE CAR BROKE DOWN I WAS DRIVING ON A CITY STREET, STRAIGHT, MEANING NOT TURNING. THE OTHER TWO TIMES I WAS ALSO DRIVING, BUT DON'T REMEMBER IF I WAS TURNING OR NOT. I DO HAVE DOCUMENTATION FROM A PREVIOUS REPAIR AND MY VISIT TO THE DEALER YESTERDAY BUT DON'T KNOW HOW TO UPLOAD FROM MY PHONE AT THIS TIME. THE DATES THE CAR BROKE DOWN FROM THE SAME PROBLEM ARE FEB, 2016, JUNE, 2016 AND OCTOBER 6, 2016. I AM DESPERATE TO RESOLVE THIS SINCE I NO LONGER HAVE TRANSPORTATION. THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP, THIS HAS BEEN AN EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING SITUATION STARTING IN FEBRUARY 2016.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-11-05
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: TIRES PURCHASE NEW, MAINTAINED WELL WITH APPROX 25K MILES OF WEAR. WITH NO NOTICE, HAD A TREAD SEPARATION ON FRONT RIGHT TIRE. TOOK TO DEALER AND IT WAS REPLACED WITH ONLY A PARTIAL CREDIT FOR WARRANTY. OTHER TIRES WERE INSPECTED AND TOLD IT WAS A FLUKE. APPROXIMATELY ONE MONTH LATER, WAS PULLING OFF FREEWAY AT ABOUT 50MPH AND LEFT REAR TIRE EXPLODED AND RIPPED FENDER OFF OF SUV. NO NOTICE OF WEAR PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT. WITNESS DRIVER PULLED OVER AND TOLD ME THAT HIS WIFE NOTICED A HUGE BUBBLE IN THE TIRE RIGHT BEFORE THE TREAD FELL APART. TOOK TO DEALER AGAIN AND THEY SAID IN EFFECT, "SO SAD, TOO BAD" BUT I MUST BE UNLUCKY AND THE OTHER TWO TIRES STILL "LOOK" GOOD. TIRE REPLACED. NOW, SAME DAY THIRD TIRE IS LOOSING AIR-NO NAILS, GOOD SEAL, GOOD VALVE. I EXPECT IT TO BLOW UP SOON AS WELL. I CANNOT AFFORD TO PURCHASE ANYMORE TIRES. I HOPE THAT I AM ALIVE BY THE TIME I CAN AFFORD TO REPLACE THE REMAINING TWO TIRES. I AM ASTONISHED THAT THESE HAVE NOT BEEN RECALLED OR THAT THE MFTR IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR FULL REPLACEMENT. THESE ARE NOT OVER TIME NOTICEABLE ISSUES, THEY ARE IMMEDIATE FAILURES AND LIFE THREATENING. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-08-24
  • VIN: JA4LS41R6XP
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: VEHICLE LOST USE OF POWER STEERING DURING A 90 DEGREE TURN AT A BUSY INTERSECTION AND I WAS BARELY ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF IT. I PROCEEDED TO PULL INTO PARKING LOT OF NEARBY CONVENIENCE STORE AND CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD. I NOTICED THAT THE V-BELT TO THE POWER STEERING PUMP AND OTHER COMPONENTS WAS TURNING RATHER SLUGGISHLY AND COULD HEAR A SQUEAKING/CHIRPING SOUND COMING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. AFTER SWITCHING OFF THE A/C, I OBSERVED THAT THE V-BELT BEGAN TO TURN MORE FREELY BUT STILL SOMEWHAT SLOWER THAN NORMAL. I THEN DROVE THE VEHICLE AT SLOW SPEEDS (35-40 MPH) TO MY HOME APPROXIMATELY 20 MILES AWAY. THE NEXT MORNING, I DROVE THE VEHICLE TO A NEARBY MECHANIC'S SHOP APPROXIMATELY 1.25 MILE AWAY TO HAVE THE VEHICLE CHECKED OUT. MECHANIC FOUND THAT THE V-BELT HAD NOW JUMPED OFF THE PULLEYS BECAUSE THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY BOLT WAS NOT IN ALL THE WAY, CAUSING THE V-BELT TO BE MISALIGNED WITH THE OTHER PULLEYS. THAT SAME DAY, I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE LOCAL MITSUBISHI DEALERSHIP (FAZELI MITSUBISHI - MESQUITE, TX) WHERE THE PREVIOUS 120K SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE SERVICE HAD BEEN PERFORMED. DEALERSHIP'S SERVICE TECHNICIAN STATES THAT THE PULLEY BOLT HAD BACKED-OUT DUE TO VIBRATION FROM THE PULLEY AND THAT THE INTERNAL THREADS OF THE CRANKSHAFT HAD BEEN DAMAGED BEYOND REPAIR REQUIRING THE CRANKSHAFT TO BE REPLACED AT AN APPROXIMATE COST OF $3300 TO $3850 AND INVOLVING A TWO WEEK TIME-FRAME. THE DEALERSHIP CURRENTLY HAS THE VEHICLE AND ARE AWAITING MY DECISION WHETHER OR NOT TO HAVE THE REPAIRS PERFORMED. I CONTACTED MITSUBISHI MOTORS NORTH AMERICA, INC. WITH THIS INFORMATION AND REQUESTED TO HAVE A FACTORY REPRESENTATIVE CONTACT/CONSULT WITH THE DEALERSHIP'S TECHNICIAN. I WAS TOLD THAT BECAUSE THEIR WERE NO RECALLS INVOLVING MY VEHICLES AND SINCE IT IS WELL BEYOND THE WARRANTY PERIOD, THEY COULD OFFER ME NO ASSISTANCE WHAT-SO-EVER. *NM

Negative 1999 Mitsubishi Montero sport car reviews

  1. Houston Nolan 2024-11-23

This vehicle's performance is subpar due to its lack of power and excessive weight, resulting in poor handling. Additionally, the steering components are currently experiencing issues despite the relatively low mileage of 54K.

  2. Alessandro McClure 2024-09-06

The car has some issues with its performance and safety features. It may not be the best option for those who prioritize safety and reliability. It is recommended to consider other options in the market that may better suit your needs.

  3. Desmond Graham 2024-08-27

Currently have 102000 miles on this vehicle. It burns about a quart of oil every 1,000 miles, and I have experienced some issues with the horsepower and other minor problems since it was bought new. However, I believe that this vehicle could benefit from some improvements in its engineering.

  4. Blair O'Hara 2024-04-13

This car is not what I expected. It has not met my standards and I am disappointed with its performance. I have decided to sell it and go back to my previous car. I prefer German cars as they suit my needs better. Thank you for your understanding.

  5. Maverick Mraz 2024-04-03

The Montero Sport is great for pulling boats, trailers, and more. It's spacious enough for all five passengers, and with all the trunk, rack, and hideaway spots, there's always room to store just about any item. The build of the Montero is bold and safe, and the overall performance is splendid.

Positive 1999 Mitsubishi Montero sport car reviews

  1. Bennett Lind 2024-11-21

I'm so glad to hear that your Montero Sport has been worry-free even after 65000 miles! It sounds like you really enjoy driving it and that it's a great conversation starter. Plus, it's spacious, comfortable, and has a solid build. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

  2. Cloyd Weissnat 2024-11-15

This vehicle is great! I've never had a problem with it and it's still going strong. I changed the tires at 80000 miles. I've been towing a 6x8 U-Haul every 3 months from SF to LA through the Grapevine with no problems, and it gets good gas mileage. The interior is spartan but fully functional. I've never had a problem going through the mountains either.

  3. Koby Kertzmann 2024-10-25

I've owned my 1998 Mitsubishi Montero Sport for almost nine years now and it has been an absolute joy to drive. In 130,000 miles, I've only had to replace the wipers, tires, brakes, and one windshield wiper pump. It's the best all-around truck I've ever owned and it still looks almost as good as the day I bought it in 1997. I'm planning on keeping 'Mitsy' for another nine years!

  4. Allan Berge 2024-10-03

If you're considering purchasing a nice SUV that won't break the bank and looks great, this is the one for you! I purchased mine as a second vehicle for towing, and it's been running fantastically since I bought it 3 years ago with over 60k miles on it. I've taken it on three trips from Florida to NY in just 4 months, and the only issue I've noticed is a slight shudder between 2nd and 3rd gears (it's an automatic) if the RPMs are very low. I only feel this twice a week, so it's not a big deal. I'm grateful that a vehicle with this many miles on it only requires such minor maintenance.

  5. Dwight Emmerich 2024-09-29

I've had my XLS Sport for 2 1/2 years and I absolutely love it! I purchased it used after comparing it to the 4-Runner, Grand Cherokee & Pathfinder. For the price, it was by far the best option. I saved $10K over a comparable 4-Runner. It is very dependable, great in the snow & ice, and overall well designed. I would definitely recommend it to a cost-conscious buyer. The only concern is that its suspension gives a stiffer ride than its competitors, but it's well worth it off-road.
