The Land Rover Discovery is a series of seven-seater family SUVs, produced under the Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The series is currently in its fifth iteration (or generation, according to the manufacturer), the first of which was introduced in 1989, making the Discovery the first new model series since the launch of the 1970 Range Rover – on which it was based – and only the third new product line since the conception of the Land Rover (vehicle and brand) by Rover in 1948. The model is sometimes called influential, as one of the first to market a true off-road capable family car.

Although the Range Rover had originally been designed as an everyday four wheel drive car that could be used as both a utility vehicle and a family car, it had progressively moved upmarket through its life to evolve into a luxury vehicle sold at a much higher price point. The Discovery was intended to fulfill the role the Range Rover originally was intended for; a segment which was now dominated by Japanese rivals such as the Nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Land Cruiser. Although positioned below the Range Rover in the company's line-up, the vehicle was both longer and higher, offered more room in the back, and optionally also more seats. Space utilization became more sophisticated in later iterations, but the series keeps offering seats for seven occupants. Despite originally being sold as an affordable alternative to the Range Rover, the Discovery has also progressively moved upmarket through its successive generations to become a bonafide luxury SUV.

The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.

The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.

The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

Hey there! I just wanted to let you know that I've become smarter and decided to let go of it.

  2. Torey Dicki 2024-10-18

At 7000 miles, my Land Rover experienced a major control module failure. Unfortunately, TATALand Rover was unable to provide a loaner vehicle and has been struggling to identify the issue with my truck. As someone who has owned over 15 Land Rovers, I am disappointed to say that this will be my last. Despite the recent Indian ownership, Land Rover's reputation for poor reliability remains unchanged.

Positive 2013 Land rover Lr4 car reviews

  1. Lucas Hayes 2024-11-12

I bought a Range Rover in 2004 and it was a great SUV. However, I recently traded it in for the LR4 and I must say, it was a great decision. The LR4 offers more bang for the buck, with a 5L V8 that puts out more power and a better driving experience. Although the fuel economy is not as good as my 2004 RR, the new Land Rovers are vastly improved and offer tremendous value compared to the competition.

  2. Thurman Bins 2024-09-26

I purchased my LR4 in 2018 with around 75K miles on it. The previous owner had replaced the water pump multiple times, but it seems that it was not done correctly. Since then, I have been regularly changing the oil and filter with my local mechanic, and it has been running smoothly. The only major repair I had to do was when a plastic coolant part under the engine cover started to leak at 120K miles, which cost me $1,500. The parts are not expensive, and as a non-turbo engine, it has been very reliable. I get around 23 mpg on the freeway at 75+mph, and the V8 engine is incredibly smooth. The interior still looks beautiful, and the classic exterior styling still looks fresh. It feels strong and safe when traveling with my family, especially in the snow. In my experience, maintenance is not expensive, and repairs are not frequent as long as you avoid going to the dealer. These naturally aspirated V8s are not complicated, and most reliable mechanics can handle them. I have found it necessary to have the sunroof drains cleaned. Overall, I highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable and safe family vehicle.

  3. Orland Wintheiser 2024-09-17

I have owned several Land Rovers in the past, including Discovery I, II, LR3, and now the 2011 LR4. Out of all of them, I must say that this LR4 provides the smoothest ride. With regular maintenance, this car can last a long time. I was looking for a car that could handle winter snow or summer sand, and this LR4 does not disappoint. It is elegant, safe, and can go anywhere, unlike Jeeps that ride hard and are made cheaply. Life is too short, so if you are considering getting an LR4, make sure to find one with regular service records. You will not regret it. ;)

  4. Dee Monahan 2024-07-28

I recently purchased a LR4 October 2021 with 103k miles and have had a great experience with it. I made sure to have the 100K mile services done and have kept up with regular oil changes since then. I have driven 11k miles without any issues and have found it to be smooth and quiet on the freeway, zippy and quick on city streets, and composed and confident on winding mountain roads. I did my research before purchasing and found that the 2012 model year has the best reliability rating. As of October 2023, my LR4 now has 122K miles and continues to run smoothly without any issues. I have only had to do oil changes every 5-6K miles to minimize timing chain issues. I did have to replace the MAP sensor at 121K as the CEL turned on with code P0106, but even with the faulty sensor, the LR4 had no noticeable change in driving performance. I have joined multiple forums and have learned a lot about preventative maintenance and repairs for common issues. The LR4 is very user-friendly for maintenance and repairs for handy individuals who are not mechanics. I absolutely love my LR4 and plan to keep it for as long as I can drive!

  5. Francisco Beier 2024-07-09

This is my third Land Rover and it's another great vehicle. The LUX edition of the LR4 has great features for any purpose, on road or off road. The 2011 LR4 is a significant improvement over my 2009 LR3 HSE. It has a tremendous ride and the increased power is a great improvement. The new Land Rover dealer in Tulsa was great to deal with and provided a very pleasant experience.
