Land rover Freelander 2003 problems
The Land Rover Freelander is a series of four-wheel-drive vehicles that was manufactured and marketed by Land Rover from 1997 to 2015. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second generation model, sold from 2007 to 2015 in North America and the Middle East as the LR2 and in Europe as the Freelander 2, transitioned to a car-based platform which placed it into the compact crossover SUV class, and was developed alongside the Volvo XC60, the Volvo S80 and the third generation Ford Mondeo. The name 'Freelander' is derived from the combination of 'Freedom' and 'Lander'.
After having built exclusively body-on-frame 4WD vehicles for half a century, the first generation Freelander was the brand's first model to use monocoque (unibody) structures, and was offered in three- and five-door body options, including a semi soft-top. The second generation (2007–2015) dropped all two-door options, leaving only a five-door estate car-like body, and – after 62 years – became the brand's first ever to offer a two-wheel drive option (as of 2010).
After a five-year hiatus, the two-door Freelanders were succeeded by the three-door versions of the Range Rover Evoque in 2011, and the five-door generation 2 was replaced by the Discovery Sport in 2015, the nameplate spanning two generations and less than eighteen years.

Common Land rover Freelander 2003 problems
The Land Rover Freelander, produced from 1997 to 2006, has been known to have several common problems that affect its performance and reliability.
One of the most common problems is with the engine wiring harness. This issue affects cars built between August and November 2000, where the harness could chafe upon the wiring and cause it to fail. This could result in the failure of various components, including the headlights, engine management, cooling fans, fuel pumps, ignition, air-con, anti-lock braking, hill-descent control, horn, or SRS system.
Another common problem is with the front seats, which sometimes didn't latch properly after using the tip lever. This could result in the backrest attempting to fold forward if the vehicle was brought to a sudden stop.
The handbrake ratchet mechanism was also known to be loose on some Freelanders built between October 1997 and February 2001. This could result in the brakes loosening and allowing the car to roll on uneven surfaces.
The diagnostic connector was also found to be problematic on some petrol Freelanders built between July 2000 and March 2002. The connector didn't meet the required safety levels and had to be changed.
Blown head gaskets were a common problem on first-generation 1.8-litre petrol models. If the coolant level fell too low, the gasket would tend to fail, and water in the oil was a good sign of an impending problem.
The child lock on some cars built between July and September 2002 was found to be faulty. The left-hand rear door could still be opened from the inside even if the child lock was switched on.
In addition to these problems, there were also issues with the sunroof, which could jam and cause water damage.
The Freelander's bodywork was also known to have issues, with many owners reporting poor reliability and a bad reputation for the car's build quality.
The rear suspension was also problematic on some models built between June 1997 and June 1998. There was an issue with the welding process, meaning the rear hub assembly could fracture, causing the car to deviate from a straight line on the road.
The Freelander's electrical system was also known to have issues, with many owners reporting problems with wiring and electrical connectors
Finally, the Freelander's off-roading capabilities could also cause damage to the car's bodywork and mechanics, with grounding and off-roading damage reported on some used examples
In summary, the Land Rover Freelander has a range of common problems that affect its performance and reliability. These include issues with the engine wiring harness, front seats, handbrake, diagnostic connector, head gaskets, child lock, sunroof, power steering, bodywork, rear suspension, electrical system, and off-roading capabilities. Potential buyers should be aware of these issues and ensure that any used Freelander they purchase has been thoroughly inspected and maintained.
What are the main problems with Land Rover Freelander?
What are the common problems with a Freelander? Amongst the most commonly reported problems are suspension and steering tracking alignment issues, causing excessive and uneven wheel alignment, which shows up as uneven and premature tyre wear.
Are Land Rover Freelander reliable?
The Freelander 2 ranked 19th in our Driver Power 2017 used car survey, and was in the top 10 for safety, comfort, practicality and handling. But while 22nd for reliability is also great, 83rd for running costs isn't.
Is a Land Rover Freelander expensive to maintain?
Land Rover servicing is generally reasonable compared with other premium brands such as Mercedes, but there's a big, 10-year service to consider that covers the timing belt, as well as all of the fluids for the engine, gearbox and four-wheel drive system. This can run to more than £1000.
Is Land Rover Freelander 2002 a good car?
The Freelander is not as luxurious nor as rugged as it's more expensive cousins, but it's surprisingly fun to drive and gets decent power and gas mileage for a six-cylinder compact SUV.

- VIN: SALNY22233A
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: BOUGHT CAR USED IN FALL 09, HAD SEVERAL WHAT SEEMED LIKE NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR REPAIRS. THERE WAS NO WARRANTY ON IT AS I BOUGHT IT FROM ANOTHER OWNER. EARLY MAY '11 THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON BUT I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS. I ARRIVED AT MY DESTINATION. ON THE WAY HOME IT CAME ON AGAIN AND AS I WAS 2 BLOCKS AWAY FROM HOME THE CAR JUST SLOWED AND CAME TO A STOP. THIS TURNED INTO A 2+ MONTH STINCH IN THE SHOP, WITH THE ENGINE NEEDING TO BE REBUILT. THIS WAS DONE BY MY MECHANIC. I WISHED I HAD READ THE INFO LISTED HERE PRIOR TO THE PURCHASE OR EVEN A YEAR AGO. LAST WINTER THE COOLANT CONSTANTLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED LIKE EVERY FEW DAYS AND THE CAR WAS OVER HEATING. MY MECHANIC SAID THE HOSES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. BETWEEN THEN AND THIS WINTER BOTH WERE REPLACED AND NOW I'M EXPERIENCING THE CAR OVER HEATING WHEN ITS FULL WITH COOLANT, HAVING PROBLEMS WITH IT STARTING, THERE NOT BEING ENOUGH POWER TO GET IT UP A HILL ETC. *TR
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN
- Summary: AT 88,000 MILES, MY 2003 LAND ROVER FREELANDER LOST ~80% OF POWER WHILE GOING UP A HILL ON A MAJOR HIGH WAY AND STARTED TO BILLOW SMOKE. AFTER STEERING THE VEHICLE OUT OF TRAFFIC, I POPPED THE HOOD TO FIND THE MATERIAL ON THE LOWER SIDE OF THE HOOD ON FIRE. UPON PUTTING THIS FIRE OUT, I REALIZED THERE WAS STILL A LARGE AMOUNT OF SMOKE COMING FROM THE UNDERSIDE OF THE ENGINE COVER AND MY ANTI-FREEZE WAS EMPTY, WHEN SERVED ONLY A COUPLE WEEKS PRIOR. AFTER LETTING THE VEHICLE COOL, I TOOK OFF THE ENGINE COVER TO FIND IT HAD A MIXTURE OF COOLANT AND OIL RESTING ON TOP OF IT; A DARK-MILKY COLORED LIQUID. UPON HAVING IT TOWED AND FURTHER INSPECTED BY A PROFESSIONAL, NOT ONLY IS MY HEAD GASKET GONE, A FITTING ON THE A RADIATOR LINE HAD MELTED ABOVE THE ENGINE, AND A CATALYTIC CONVERTER IS AS WELL. I GOT IT BACK TO MY HOUSE IN THIS CONDITION BECAUSE I STILL OWE $7500 AND HAVE ONLY HAD IT FOR 1 YEAR. MECHANICALLY TOTALED IN MY DRIVEWAY, IT NOW ONLY SOMETIMES WILL SHIFT AND WHEN IT DOES, ONLY HAPPENS WITH FORCE. PRIOR TO THIS ALMOST FATAL DISASTER, I HAD THREE WINDOW ASSEMBLIES BRAKE; RUINING THE MOTORS AND CAUSING THEM TO FALL WHILE DRIVING, AND MY BRAKE LIGHTS DO NOT FUNCTION. I REPLACED THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH, PROBLEM WITH BRAKE LIGHTS STILL PERSISTS. I'VE GIVEN UP HOPE ON THIS SUV AND HAVE GOT NOT ONE REPLY FROM LAND ROVER COSTUMER SERVICE. I AM STUCK MAKING PAYMENTS, AND EVEN IF I COULD AFFORD TO FIX IT, WOULD NEVER PUT MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER IN IT AGAIN. PLEASE GET THESE VEHICLES OFF THE ROAD, BEFORE SOMEONE IS EVEN LESS LUCKY THEN I. *TR

- VIN: SALNY22203A
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN
- Summary: 1) DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 60MPH, MY ENGINE SUDDENLY SHUT OFF AND I LOST ALL POWER EXCEPT BRAKES. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO AND ALLOW MY CAR TO REST, AND LATER DROVE MY CAR TO THE LAND ROVER DEALERSHIP WHERE I WAS TOLD SOMETHING ALONG THE LINES OF "THE COOLANT GASKET WAS CRACKED/BROKE" AND HAD CAUSED THE ENGINE TO OVERHEAT. 2) I WAS HAVING MY CAR FIXED FOR RANDOM FAILURE OF WINDOW MOTOR AND SUNROOF, I WAS TOLD THAT THE THE CARRIER BEARINGS/SUPPORT BEARINGS THAT THE DRIVESHAFT GOES THROUGH ARE BAD, YET THIS REPAIR IS COVERED. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE PLACE WHERE THE SHAFT COMES APART IS RUSTED AND CORRODED WHICH IS A $3200 DOLLAR REPAIR. THE WARRANTIED PART (DRIVESHAFT) IS $429, AND THE CORRODED PIECE + LABOR WAS $3160. 3) WHILE GETTING A SMOG CHECK IN CALIFORNIA, I HAD ERROR CODES INDICATING "ENGINE MISFIRE" AND "FUEL INJECTION ERROR" AND MY CAR DID NOT PASS, EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS NO SERVICE/CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, THE CAR DROVE "FINE" WITH FINE MEANING A GRINDING NOISE OF MY DRIVETRAIN AND KNOCK WHEN GOING FROM 2ND TO 3RD GEAR. LAND ROVER SAID THAT INSIDE THE UPPER INTAKE MANIFOLD CHAMBER, THE ACTUATOR FLAP IS STUCK -A DEFECT KNOWN TO LAND ROVER BUT NOT COVERED SINCE MY CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THIS REPAIR WAS $2000 4) WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, SUDDENLY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AT 65K MILES, AND ALL GAUGES SHUT DOWN. RPM, FUEL, MPH, AND TEMPERATURE ALL FELL TO READ 0, EMPTY, 130+, AND 0 DEGREES RESPECTFULLY. I EMERGENTLY PULLED TO SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY FEARING THE ENGINE HAD OVERHEATED BUT EVERYTHING WAS "FINE." I THEN TURNED THE CAR BACK ON AFTER 30 MINUTES AND SAW ALL GAUGES AGAIN FUNCTIONAL EXCEPT SPEED. PLEASE LOOK AT THE INTERNET, THIS HAS HAPPENED TO HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE AND THIS CAR IS UNSAFE. IT NEEDS TO BE RECALLED! I WAS LUCKY THAT NO ONE DIED OR WAS INJURED IN ANY OF THESE 4 INCIDENTS. I NEVER FEEL SAFE DRIVING ON HIGHWAYS ANYMORE.

- Summary: I PAID $2,700.00 FOR AN EXTENDED WARRANTY THROUGHLANDROVER/EASYCARE MY (2003 FREELANDER ) IN JUNE OF 2007. THE WARRANTY IS FOR 60MONTHS AND UP TO 100,000MILES. MY VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN OPERABLE FOR OVER 2 MONTHS LARGELY DUE TO THE DIFFICULTIES OF CONDUCTING WHAT SHOULD BE NORMAL BUSINESS WITH EASYCARE. EASYCARE HAS BEEN SO DIFFICULT TO DEAL WITH THAT THE FIRST CAR REPAIR SHOP I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO 'ADVANCED AUTO SERVICE' CHOSE TO GIVE UP AFTER GETTING NOWHERE WITH EASYCARE. 'ADVANCED AUTO SERVICE' STATED 'THEY ARE JUST TOO DIFFICULT TO DEAL WITH' AND REQUESTED I PICK-UP/TOW THE VEHICLE TO A LAND ROVER DEALERSHIP, THIS WAS 3 WEEKS AFTER I HAD DROPPED OFF THE VEHICLE. I THEN HAD MY VEHICLE TOWED TO '[XXX]' AND THE VEHICLE IS STILL AT [XXX]AND HAS BEEN THERE FOR 2.5 WEEKS AND COUNTING. [XXX] HAS EXPRESSED TO ME THAT MAJOR REPAIRS NEED TO BE PERFORMED ON TO THE ENGINE. THEY HAVE ALSO EXPRESSED TO ME THIS ENGINE REPAIR WAS NOT DUE TO 'LACK OF MAINTENANCE' AND THAT THE APPEARANCE OF 'SLUDGE' IS NOT IN EXCESS. [XXX] HAS RELAYED TO ME THAT EASYCARE INFORMED THEM ENGINE REPAIRS WILL NOT BE COVERED, AND HAVE ONLY GIVEN THE REASON OF 'LACK OF MAINTENANCE' ' DUE TO 'SLUDGE'. ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS I HAVE ASKED THREE OF EASYCARE'S STAFF (UNKNOWN NAME, [XXX]) TO PROVIDE ME WITH THE REASON FOR THE DENIAL OF THE ENGINE REPAIR CLAIM. BOTH TIMES THEY HAVE REFUSED TO PROVIDE THIS DOCUMENTATION AND/OR THE EVIDENCE FOR DECISION MADE. TO DATE THERE HAS BEEN NO COMMUNICATION TO ME FROM EASYCARE OTHER THAN THE 2 TIMES I CALLED. THE REQUESTED INFORMATION HAS NEVER BEEN PROVIDED TO ME, NOR HAS EASYCARE PROVIDED ME WITH ANY DOCUMENTATION AS TO WHY THEY HAVE DENIED, THE REQUIRED ENGINE REPAIR. SINCE I BOUGHT MY WARRANTY AT [XXX] AND THROUGH EASYCARE, I EXPECT THEM TO WORK TOGETHER TO RESOLVE THESE ISSUES WITHOUT ME HAVING TO CONSTANTLY WASTE MY TIME. THIS CAR IS TRUELY A LEMON. - Summary: MY LAND ROVER FREELANDER HAS BEEN IN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR COOLANT SMELLS COMING INTO THE CABIN 20+ TIMES AND HAS NEVER BEEN REPAIRED. THEY HAVE REPLACED EXTERNAL PARTS, (RESERVOIR TANK, HOSES AND THERMOSTATS) AND NEVER FIXED THE PROBLEM. AFTER RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM WHILE IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY ON MY OWN, I FOUND A COMPLAINT ABOUT HEAD GASKET PROBLEMS WITH THE K SERIES ENGINE AND WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THEY NEW NOTHING ABOUT IT, AND YOU CAN'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ ON THE INTERNET. SINCE THEN I CALLED THE CA BUREAU OF AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR AND HAD AN AGENT INVESTIGATE. THE DEALERSHIP OFFERED TO SEND IT TO ANOTHER WARRANTY SHOP WHICH FOUND A BAD HEAD GASKET. I ALSO CALLED L/R DIRECT TO TRY AND FIND OUT WHAT THEY MAY BE ABLE TO DO FOR ME. THEY TOLD ME THEY WOULD NOT REPLACE THE ENGINE BECAUSE IT COST $11,000 +, AND THE REPLACEMENT ENGINE WILL FAIL ALSO. THE ENGINE WAS MANUFACTURED INCORRECTLY AT THE FACTORY. THE CYLINDER SLEEVES ARE THE WRONG ALLOY AND LOOSEN WHEN THE ENGINE IS HOT CAUSING HEAD GASKET AND EVENTUALLY TOTAL ENGINE FAILURE. LAND ROVER HAS KNOWN ABOUT THIS PROBLEM SINCE 2004, TECHNICAL BULLETIN #0036 AND #0026 ISSUED 06/18/2004. THE MANUFACTURER OFFERED ME $3500 TO BUY MY CAR FROM ME, AND WOULD NOT REPLACE THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 54,000 MILES ON IT. THIS SEEMS TO BE A SAFETY HAZARD AS WELL AS A HEALTH ISSUE FROM BREATHING IN TOXIC FUMES FROM THE COOLANT. THERE HAVE BEEN OTHER INCIDENTS WITH THIS VEHICLE WHICH ARE TO MANY TO MENTION IN THIS LETTER. PLEASE CONTACT ASAP ABOUT THIS MATTER.

- Summary: 2003 LAND ROVER FREELAND - BEGAN TO EXPERIENCE A MYSTERIOUS LOSS OF COOLANT. MADE MULTIPLE TRIPS TO LOCAL GARAGE - THEY WERE UNABLE TO LOCATE LEAK. CHECKED WEB SITE - IT'S A WELL-KNOWN ENGINE FLAW WITH THE FREELAND THAT LEADS TO ENGINE FAILURE. I BOUGHT THIS CAR IN 2003 FROM LR DEALER. TECHNICAL BULLETINS WERE ISSUED BACK IN 2005. WENT TO DEALERSHIP YESTERDAY - $8000-$10000 TO REPLACE ENGINE IF THEY COULD GET ONE. EVIDENTLY, IT'S DIFFICULT TO GET ENGINES. SERVICE DEPARTMENT KNOWS THE PROBLEM WELL - TOLD ME MY CAR WAS JUNK AND LR WAS WELL AWARE. ASKED WHAT WAS DONE FOR OWNERS SINCE IT WAS A WELL KNOWN DOCUMENTED DESIGN FLAW. NOTHING! TOLD ME I WAS LUCKY IT DID NOT HAPPEN SOONER. LR IS JUST PREYING ON THE INNOCENT PUBLIC BY REFUSING TO DEAL WITH WHAT IS CLEARLY OF THEIR OWN MAKING. *TR

After only a few days of purchasing the car, I experienced a heat issue which caused smoke to rise from the engine. However, the radiator and thermostat were quickly replaced while I drove around in a Discovery. I also noted some issues with the engine and transmission performance on the quality survey I received. Many of the issues I noted were on a list of recalls, but all of the lacking components were addressed and the ride/drive quality improved significantly. Although being an 'early adopter' has its drawbacks, I am now satisfied with the car/truck overall.

I really love my Land Rover Freelander! It's a dependable and fun SUV to drive. I also own a 2002 Mercedes, but I enjoy driving my Land Rover just as much. If you're considering buying a Freelander, I highly recommend it. It has all the bells and whistles, and I haven't had any problems with it so far. I bought it from a salesman named Kevin in Asheville, NC, and the experience was very pleasant. You won't regret owning a Land Rover! :-)

I loved my Freelander! I had it for 6 months until someone rear-ended me on the highway going 85 mph. Despite the impact, this car saved me without a scratch. It was definitely sturdy and very fun to drive. The only issue I had with the car was a big warranty problem - nobody wanted to cover it because the price of parts is high. However, I never had any problems with the way it ran or with the parts.

I have always liked Land Rovers, but I couldn't accept the 12-14 MPG of the larger Discovery or Range Rover. The Freelander fits my needs with many of the features I would expect from a Land Rover. I was surprised it lacked several features listed below in the 'Suggested Improvement' section. So far, it's been a great car. I also had a great experience with the dealership sales staff.

On-road and Off-road, it's impressive. My wife and two children love it too. We can go anywhere, no matter the weather or terrain. The ride is smooth and the low center of gravity makes cornering and u-turns a breeze. I highly recommend it!

My experience with my Land Rover has been quite frustrating. Despite driving it only on paved roads and never having any accidents, it has required a lot of maintenance. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend purchasing a Land Rover due to the frequent issues I have encountered. However, I understand that everyone's experience may differ and this is just my personal opinion. I have decided to explore other options and look into American-made cars. Thank you for considering my experience.

I purchased this vehicle certified December of 2006 and I've had nothing but problems. First, I had to have the ball bearing replaced (under warranty $3,000). Then the engine ran hot 3x's, each time the coolant had run out and had to be replaced. The 4th time I had to take it in due to the coolant again, it turned out that I needed a new engine! Thank God for warranties ($7,000). Now it's in the shop again because the gasket needs replacing. I spoke with a Land Rover mechanic that told me to get rid of it. He also said that there have been several problems with the Freelander in general. Further, he said that I will continue to have problems that are expensive if I keep it.

Great SUV for playing hard! However, the reliability of the SUV could be improved. In my first year alone, I had to replace the transmission and fix two oil leaks. The main seal may also need attention, but the dealer has not provided a clear explanation.

This car has been unreliable and has caused me nothing but problems during the 3 years I have owned it. Fortunately, I had the foresight to purchase an aftermarket warranty which more than paid for itself. Although the warranty has now expired, I have decided to sell the car and move on. It appears that those who have not experienced any issues with this car are in the minority.
