2015 Audi A8 problems

audi logo

The Audi A8 is a full-size luxury sedan manufactured and marketed by the German automaker Audi since 1994. Succeeding the Audi V8, and now in its fourth generation, the A8 has been offered with both front- or permanent all-wheel drive—and in short- and long-wheelbase variants. The first two generations employed the Volkswagen Group D platform, with the current generation deriving from the MLB platform. After the original model's 1994 release, Audi released the second generation in late 2002, the third in late 2009, and the fourth and current iteration in 2017. Noted as the first mass-market car with an aluminium chassis, all A8 models have used this construction method co-developed with Alcoa and marketed as the Audi Space Frame.

A mechanically upgraded, high-performance version of the A8 debuted in 1996 as the Audi S8. Produced exclusively at Audi's Neckarsulm plant, the S8 is fitted standard with Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system. The S8 was only offered with a short-wheelbase for the first three generations, being joined by a long-wheelbase variant for the fourth generation.

D2 (Typ 4D; 1994–2002)

Development

In 1982, Ferdinand Piëch signed an agreement with Aluminum Company of America. The objective was to design and develop a car that would be substantially lighter than any other vehicles in its class (to compensate for the fact that standard all-wheel drive was around 100 kg (220 lb) heavier than competitors' rear-wheel drive). In the late 1980s, it was decided that the target vehicle would be a successor to the V8 (Typ 4C) flagship introduced in 1988. By 1990, a final design by Chris Bird and Dirk van Braeckel was chosen and frozen for series production in mid-1991. In September 1993, the Audi Space Frame (ASF) Concept was unveiled at the 1993 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) as a D2 Typ 4D prototype in polished aluminum. Pilot production began in December 1993 and development ended in early 1994, at a total cost of $700 million (£418.1 million).

Common 2015 Audi A8 problems

The 2015 Audi A8, like any vehicle, has its share of common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:

  • Start-Stop Defects: The start-stop system in modern vehicles, including the Audi A8, is designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by shutting off the engine when the car is stationary and restarting it. Defects in this system can cause issues like the engine failing to restart, abrupt stops, or delayed engine response.
  • Oil-Starved Turbochargers: Turbocharged engines, like those found in some Audi A8 models, rely on a steady oil supply to keep the turbocharger's moving parts lubricated and cool. Oil starvation can occur due to leaks, clogs in the oil supply lines, or insufficient maintenance, leading to turbocharger failure.
  • Water in Footwell: This issue is usually caused by a blocked scuttle drain. Cleaning out the scuttle drain should resolve the problem.
  • Timing Chain Rattle: When the timing chain starts to rattle, it's a sign that it needs to be replaced before it causes catastrophic engine damage.
  • Electronic Handbrake Problems: The electronic handbrake may remain on when switched off, causing a loss of power or/and a screeching noise from the brake discs. Depending on the severity, you may need to replace the electronic handbrake and possibly the calipers as well.
  • Air Temperature Sensor Failure: The air temperature sensor may fail, causing inaccurate temperature readings. Fitting a replacement air temperature sensor will resolve the issue.
  • MMI (Multi Media Interface) Problems: The A8 is known for having problems with the MMI, an advanced piece of technology. Problems can range from software faults to hardware failure. If you're experiencing issues, it's best to have a specialist look at it to identify the exact problem.
  • Door Micro Switch Failure: If the doors are sticking, not opening as easily as they should, or not locking properly with the remote key, there's an issue with the door micro switches. You'll need to fit replacement door micro switches to fix this problem.
  • Loss of Power Steering: This issue is caused by a fluid leak on the return hose for the hydraulic power steering. Replacing the return hose should resolve the issue.
  • Bumpy Driving: The air suspension on the Audi A8 is fantastic, but it can fail. Often, this will be the air compressor itself, which can be replaced relatively easily. If replacing the compressor doesn't resolve the issue, then you'll need to replace the entire air suspension system, which is a massive job best left to experts.
  • Engine Rattle: This issue is likely caused by a deformed and then come loose engine compartment seal. You can order a retaining plate from an online store for quick delivery, and installing the plate is very easy.
  • Grinding Noise On Gear Changes: If your gears have started to make a slight grinding noise whenever you change gear, it might be due to gear oil escaping into a faulty welded joint on the gearbox oil line. Audi will usually replace the oil line for free, but if not, you can easily do this work yourself with a new hose from BreakerYard.

These are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the 2015 Audi A8. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly can help extend the vehicle's lifespan and ensure a safer and more enjoyable driving experience.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-11-23
  • VIN: WAU3GAFDXFN
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS, THE VEHICLE DID NOT STOP WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS PUSHED AT HIGHWAY DRIVING SPEEDS. THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN ALL THE TIME. CAR HAS BEEN TOWED TO AUDI DEALERSHIP TWICE, YET THEY FIND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THE DIAGNOSTIC TESTS THAT THEY ARE RUNNING RELY ON THE COMPUTER, WHICH IS DEFECTIVE TO BEGIN WITH AND NOT RECORDING THE NECESSARY FAILURE (CODES) FOR WHEN THE BRAKES FAIL ON THE VEHICLE. SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-09-05
  • VIN: WAU32AFD8FN
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: WHEN BRAKING THE CAR VIBRATES, SOMETIMES SO VIOLENTLY THAT IT IS UNSAFE TO KEEP APPLYING THE BRAKES TO CONTROL THE SPEED OF THE VEHICLE. CURRENTLY THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN SERVICE SINCE JUNE 27, 2015 AND HAS BEEN DRIVEN 21,000 MILES. HOWEVER, THIS VIBRATION HAS BEEN NOTICED EARLY IN THE LIFE OF THE CAR. ORIGINALLY, I THOUGHT THE VIBRATION WAS DUE TO THE ROAD SURFACE OR CONDITION, BUT I HAVE COME TO REALIZE THAT THIS PROBLEM IS A VEHICLE FAULT. IN THE MOST RECENT INCIDENT WE WERE DRIVING FROM PAYSON, ARIZONA TO MESA, ARIZONA USING THE VEHICLE CRUISE CONTROL. ON THIS ROAD, US 87, THERE ARE A FEW INCLINES OF ABOUT 6% THAT RUN FOR 2 TO 3 MILES. AS THE CAR GAINED SPEED GOING DOWN THE INCLINE THE CRUISE CONTROL WOULD APPLY THE BRAKES AND EXTREME SHUDDERING AND VIBRATION OF THE VEHICLE OCCURRED. TO MAINTAIN A SAFE SPEED WE EVENTUALLY REVERTED TO ENGINE BRAKING TO CONTROL A SAFE SPEED. THIS HIGHWAY IS VERY WELL MAINTAINED AND I AM CERTAIN THAT THE ROAD CONDITIONS DID NOT CONTRIBUTE THE THE VIOLENT SHUDDERING OF THE VEHICLE. MY WIFE AND I HAVE BEEN RETIRED FOR SEVERAL YEARS AND WE HAVE NOT DRIVEN THIS VEHICLE HARD OR HAD ANY EMERGENCY STOPS. THE VIBRATION IS PRESENT, TO A LESSER DEGREE, AT SLOWER SPEEDS AND VARIES CONSIDERABLY DAY TO DAY. I HAVE OWNED TWO LEXUS' PRIOR TO THE A8L. BOTH THE LS400 AND LS430 WERE DRIVEN 120,000+ MILES WITHOUT A BRAKE PROBLEM OR VIBRATION DURING BRAKING. THE PADS MAY HAVE BEEN REPLACED ONCE, BUT THE ROTORS NEVER HAD A PROBLEM.
2016-08-02

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-05-18
  • VIN: WAU32AFDXFN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING ON A SUBURBAN CITY STREET IN A STRAIGHT LINE WITH NO CARS OR ANY OTHER OBSTRUCTIONS AHEAD OF ME OR BEHIND ME. WITHOUT WARNING, THE CAR ENGAGED ITS EMERGENCY BRAKING THROWING MY DAUGHTER AND ME FORWARD VIOLENTLY INTO OUR SEAT BELTS. WHEN I FELL BACK, THE DASHBOARD WAS SHOWING ME A PROXIMITY WARNING BUT AGAIN NOTHING WAS ANYWHERE NEAR OUR CAR. THE SERVICING DEALER SAID THEY DIDN'T FIND ANY ERROR CODES AND SO THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. THIS HASN'T HAPPENED AGAIN (YET) BUT THE CAMERAS ALL AROUND THE CAR THAT ENGAGE FOR PARKING AND IN REVERSE ARE CONSTANTLY GOING OUT AND/OR THE VEHICLE MMI SYSTEM RANDOMLY RETRACTS INTO THE DASH WHILE DRIVING.

Negative 2015 Audi A8 car reviews

  1. Armand Hyatt 2024-06-07

The A8L seems like a fantastic car, but there is an important piece of information that Audi has not shared with its customers. In the unfortunate event of a collision, it can take up to three months to repair the vehicle. I personally experienced a rear-end collision over six weeks ago, and the repair work has not even begun. This is because Audi limits collision repairs to one shop per city, and in my city of five million people, there is only one shop with a single authorized technician. With five other cars ahead of mine, it will be at least another month before I can expect to see my car again. I did file a complaint with Audi, but they explained that the vehicle is made of aluminium and requires special training to repair. While I understand this, there are many other cars made of aluminium and many other repair shops that can perform the repair. Unfortunately, Audi will not sell the parts to these shops, making it impossible for them to do the repair. Audi also refused to provide me with an alternative vehicle or buy the car back. It is frustrating to spend between $90 and $100k on a car only to find out that it cannot be repaired in a reasonable amount of time. I will be taking legal action against Audi soon and will update on the results.

  2. Roberto Bauch 2024-03-29

If you are in the market for an Audi, rest assured that I can provide you with valuable information. Although some models have common issues, I can confidently say that these problems can be resolved. When I purchased my 2015 A8L a year and a half ago, I was thrilled with my purchase. As a long-time Audi enthusiast, I had previously owned a 2005 A6 without any major issues. With over 40k miles on my new A8, and with every factory recommended maintenance record, I was confident that I wouldn't encounter any problems. However, after a year, my mechanic informed me that the water pump needed to be replaced soon. Although I was initially skeptical, I later learned that it is normal for these cars to have the water pump replaced at around 60-80k miles. Unfortunately, my car was leaking antifreeze from three separate locations, but I was able to resolve these issues with the help of my trusted mechanic. Despite these challenges, I still believe that Audi produces high-quality vehicles that are worth investing in.The steering wheel vibration I noticed when touching the brake pedal on the highway is a clear indication that the front rotors are going bad. When the brakes are due, I will need to replace them at a cost of around $300 per rotor for this particular model. It is surprising that this flagship Audi sedan with just over 60k miles on it, and currently wearing its second set of brakes ever, is already experiencing bent rotors. As a loyal Audi customer, I had high hopes for this car as a great alternative to the 7-series or S-Class. However, I am disappointed with this issue. Despite this, I will continue to drive the car for now, as I have already invested a significant amount of money in it. However, I will not be purchasing another Audi in the future.

Positive 2015 Audi A8 car reviews

When I was younger, I dreamed of owning a BMW someday. However, my friend beat me to it and bought a 750L. Looking back, I'm glad he did because this Audi is far superior and makes the BMW look outdated. The interior is especially impressive, with LED lights and a pop-up MMI screen that welcomes you as soon as you sit down. I'm the second owner of this car, and I still remember the huge grin on my face during the 70-mile drive home from the dealer. The power and torque are incredible, and the safety features are top-notch, including rear radar, front cameras, and adaptive cruise control. The massage heated and cooled seats are a nice touch, and the car even gets great gas mileage for a twin-turbo V8 engine. I haven't had any major issues with the car, and I hope it stays that way. The only things I would add are USB ports and a signal reminder bell. Overall, the Audi A8 is a class above the rest, and you won't regret owning one.Hi there! At 81,000 miles on a trip to Upstate NY, I started hearing a ting ting bell-like sound. Unfortunately, on the way back home, the turbos blew. I was about 20 miles from home and was able to limp home. The dealership quoted me $14,000.00 for the repair, but my extended warranty company didn't cover it (that's another story). After doing some research, I found out that this was a common issue and NHTSA has an open investigation. I went on the Audi forums and asked if anyone else had the same problem and provided a link to NHTSA. I also contacted Audi USA to see if they would cover the issue. The dealership lowered the cost to $9,000, but still, who wants to pay that much for a repair? After about a week or so, I received a call from Audi USA, and they said they would not cover it, and the dealership sets the price. At the same time, I was looking in the forums, and I guess that morning, Audi issued a bulletin covering all cars affected by this. I gave the rep the bulletin number, and lo and behold, there was a note in my account she overlooked that said the repairs would be covered. And now, she's running fine again. I have some squeaking coming from the front sway bushings, so I'll be replacing those (another common issue). Overall, I'd still give this car a 5-star rating. The looks, power, and comfort are amazing. I plan to do an oil change in the next coming days. The schedule says every 10k miles, but I think I'll do every 5k now. I received another recall notice about the turbos, telling me to bring it in for service to change the oil screen, which clogs and caused the turbos to fail. When I bring it in for the oil change, I'll see if the updated part has been installed. By the way, if you're experiencing the same issue, JHM sells an aftermarket part that removes the screen altogether and relocates it on top of the turbos, making them more serviceable. Have a great day!

It's great, except it was too low for me to get out of easily. I'm 6'4

I absolutely love Audi's flagship model, which sets an incredibly high standard in the luxury sedan category. What I appreciate most is that it is less common than other luxury brands, yet outperforms them in many aspects. Even after three years, the model remains a head-turner and a true joy to drive on my daily 20-mile commute. The performance of the A8 4.0L T is robust, yet the look is understated. While I have some concerns about the inability of local dealerships to keep up with the service capacity demands as more Audis are sold, overall I am quite satisfied with what is now my fifth A8. I do think it would be helpful if the unexpected service charge of more than $650 to align the adaptive cruise control was covered in the pre-purchased Audi Care package. Thank you for considering my feedback!

This premium executive sedan is an excellent choice for its price. It offers a comfortable and quiet ride, great handling, and comes standard with AWD. The standard BOSE surround sound system is also a plus, and it gets great gas mileage. While the S class Mercedes is a great car, it comes at a higher cost, does not use the Quatro system in their AWD, does not have an all aluminum chassis (which means it may rust), does not handle as well, and does not get as good gas mileage. The car has been trouble-free for 50,000 miles, with only the tires and brakes needing replacement.

You know what? That's the best car I've ever owned!
