2005 Land rover Freelander problems
The Land Rover Freelander is a series of four-wheel-drive vehicles that was manufactured and marketed by Land Rover from 1997 to 2015. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second generation model, sold from 2007 to 2015 in North America and the Middle East as the LR2 and in Europe as the Freelander 2, transitioned to a car-based platform which placed it into the compact crossover SUV class, and was developed alongside the Volvo XC60, the Volvo S80 and the third generation Ford Mondeo. The name 'Freelander' is derived from the combination of 'Freedom' and 'Lander'.
After having built exclusively body-on-frame 4WD vehicles for half a century, the first generation Freelander was the brand's first model to use monocoque (unibody) structures, and was offered in three- and five-door body options, including a semi soft-top. The second generation (2007–2015) dropped all two-door options, leaving only a five-door estate car-like body, and – after 62 years – became the brand's first ever to offer a two-wheel drive option (as of 2010).
After a five-year hiatus, the two-door Freelanders were succeeded by the three-door versions of the Range Rover Evoque in 2011, and the five-door generation 2 was replaced by the Discovery Sport in 2015, the nameplate spanning two generations and less than eighteen years.

Common 2005 Land rover Freelander problems
Based on the information from the sources provided, here are the common problems with the Land Rover Freelander 2005 based on complaints from owners:
- Power Steering: A common problem is a whining sound indicating potential issues with the power steering pump, which may need replacement. Steering rack issues can also arise, affecting the motion of the wheel.
- Sunroof: Problems with the sunroof jamming have been reported, especially in models from 1997 to 2005. Water damage signs and functionality issues should be checked thoroughly.
- Handbrake: Older Freelander models (1997-2003) may have issues with a loose handbrake ratchet, impacting parking. Electronic brake functionality and brake pad condition should be inspected in later models.
- Bodywork: Despite being a soft-roader, the Freelander can suffer from low ground clearance issues. Inspecting for off-roading damage along sills and front and rear areas is recommended, especially in used models .
- Starting Issues: Some owners have experienced difficulties starting the engine, often due to fuel not reaching the engine components. Commonly, the low-pressure fuel pump connections may be faulty, requiring inspection and potential replacement.
- EGR Valve Problems: In 2006, Land Rover recommended cleaning the EGR valve on 2.0 Td4 models every 12,000 miles to prevent blockages that could lead to oil leaks and engine damage. Regular maintenance of the EGR valve is crucial to prevent costly repairs.
- Remote Locking: Issues with remote locking systems have been reported, where the key and car may not communicate effectively. Battery replacement for the key is a simple fix, but if unsuccessful, further troubleshooting steps are necessary.
These common problems highlight the importance of thorough inspection and maintenance when considering a Land Rover Freelander 2005 to ensure a reliable and trouble-free driving experience.

Are Land Rover Freelander reliable?
The Freelander 2 ranked 19th in our Driver Power 2017 used car survey, and was in the top 10 for safety, comfort, practicality and handling. But while 22nd for reliability is also great, 83rd for running costs isn't.
Is a Land Rover Freelander expensive to maintain?
Land Rover servicing is generally reasonable compared with other premium brands such as Mercedes, but there's a big, 10-year service to consider that covers the timing belt, as well as all of the fluids for the engine, gearbox and four-wheel drive system. This can run to more than £1000.
Is the Freelander a good 4x4?
Off-road, the Freelander beats more on-road focused rivals like the Audi Q5 and BMW X3 hands down thanks to its excellent Terrain Response system, which features a number of modes to tackle different surfaces and limited grip levels.

I owned a Land Rover Discovery before the Freelander. I absolutely love my Freelander as it is very capable, comfortable and does everything I ask of it. I especially appreciate its distinctive exterior style. Compared to the 'thirsty' Discovery which required premium gas, the Freelander is much more economical as it gets better mileage and uses regular grade gas. After owning it for 15 months and 14,000 miles, I can confidently say that I am extremely happy with my Freelander. It fits my needs much better than the Discovery did and is far more reliable. In short, the Freelander is a true Land Rover without some of the shortcomings of the bigger models.

I'm really enjoying this car! Although the interior is smaller than what I'm used to (I've owned several SUVs in the past), it's just the right size for me! I haven't had any problems with it and I love driving it! I know there have been some concerns about brake problems and transmission, but I think every type of car has its lemons that roll off the line every once in a while. Fortunately, mine is not one of them and I'm happy to see all of the positive and realistic reviews on this vehicle!

I did a lot of research and found this car because it is really enjoyable! The t-roof and hard top can be removed, allowing you to enjoy the sun. The seating is excellent, providing great support for my bad back. The entire inside can be easily cleaned with water or windex. It looks fun and unique, and always gets a lot of attention. For a single person like me, it has plenty of room for everything I need. As a nurse, I need to get to work no matter the weather, and this car can handle anything nature throws at it. Although I had a computer/software problem, the dealership was very helpful and provided me with loaners when needed.

I purchased a Freelander 2005, a highly reliable vehicle with no significant issues. Proper maintenance is crucial for any vehicle. At 135,000 miles, I unfortunately lost the keys and was quoted $3,000 by the dealer for new keys and reprogramming. However, a locksmith was able to create a key that starts the vehicle, although they were unable to reprogram the instrument dash. Despite this setback, I remain confident in the quality and durability of my Freelander.

I owned luxury cars before I purchased my SE3. However, I knew that I was getting a 4x4 first and luxury wasn't going to be there. What I found is that it is fun to drive, reliable and a real head turner. If you buy it knowing what you are getting, then you probably won't be disappointed. If you buy a Freelander because it looks pretty and you want a 'luxury' SUV, then you will be disappointed.

The FreeLander has some issues that need to be addressed. The Head Gasket is known to fail, which can be a major inconvenience. Additionally, some components such as wiper motors, latches, and switches may require maintenance. However, with proper care and attention, these issues can be resolved. It's important to note that the FreeLander has a 5 year 50k warranty, which provides peace of mind to its owners. While resale value may not be as high as some other vehicles, it's important to remember that the FreeLander has many great features that make it a worthwhile investment.

The sunroof has been replaced twice so far. The driver's seat belt pretensioner has been replaced twice and the seat belt light comes on when the belt is buckled. The key cylinder in the rear cargo door fell out and had to be replaced. The seats are hard to keep clean. Although I expected better from Land Rover, I am now afraid to buy the new LR-2!
Wilton Gusikowski 2024-09-21
This car has had some serious issues, including shutting down at highway speeds twice due to a faulty fuel pump. Additionally, the brakes and rotors wore out quickly, which Land Rover claims is normal. The car also runs poorly and makes strange noises, requiring frequent trips to the shop. These issues are concerning, but it is important to address them promptly to ensure safe and reliable transportation.

Great driving smaller SUV! Before buying, it's important to learn about English cars as they can be quite quirky and odd at times. However, if you're looking for something unique and a Land Rover, why not go for it? If you prefer something more practical, there are other options available. But if you want to turn heads while driving, this is the car for you! Overall, I like it, although there are some issues with certain features. One of the greatest things about it is the heated windshield. While some aspects of the car's design may be questionable, it's still a neat car, especially for the right person.

I purchased the car for $5,000 from a dealer, but unfortunately, I later discovered that the engine light was covered with black tape, which I didn't notice at night. Although it was sold 'as is', I had to take out a loan to fix the issue, which cost me another $5,000. However, after four years, I now need to replace all the struts, control arms, stabilizer bars, and tie rods due to rusting, which will cost me an additional $2,000. It's been a frustrating experience, and my dad even calls it the devil and doesn't want to touch it anymore!
