Common 2002 Land rover Discovery ii problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Land Rover Discovery II 2002, several common problems have been identified:
- Oil Pump Failure: Rover V8 engines are prone to oil pump failures, which can result in low oil pressure, especially at idle. If left unaddressed, this can lead to engine damage. Symptoms include the low oil pressure light coming on, particularly at idle. Prompt replacement of the oil pump is crucial to prevent engine damage.
- ACE (Active Cornering Enhancement) System Issues: The ACE system, when it fails, can be a significant problem. Owners may need to decide whether to repair the system or opt to remove it entirely and replace the pump with an idler pulley. This system can present challenges when it malfunctions.
- Chassis Rust: Discovery II models are known to suffer from terminal rust issues, particularly in the chassis. It is essential to carefully inspect the chassis for signs of rust, especially in areas where mud may have blocked drainage holes, leading to internal rusting. Checking for chassis rot is crucial to prevent structural integrity issues.
- EGR Valve Failure: Another common problem reported by owners is the failure of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve, especially in older diesel models. EGR valve failures are relatively common in older diesels and can lead to performance issues. This problem should be addressed promptly to maintain engine efficiency.
- Injector Loom Issues: In Td5 models, there have been reports of oil leaking into the injector loom. This issue, if not remedied, can lead to engine problems. It is essential to address this concern to prevent further damage to the engine.
These common problems with the Land Rover Discovery II 2002 highlight some of the key issues that owners have faced with this vehicle. Addressing these issues promptly and proactively maintaining the vehicle can help mitigate potential problems and ensure the longevity of the car.

There can be issues with water and fuel loss on some heads as it's a common-rail engine with a fuel pressure line in the head casting.

- Manufacturer: JAGUAR LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA, LLC
- Components: POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE:DRIVESHAFT
- Summary: JAGUAR LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA, INC. (LAND ROVER) IS RECALLING CERTAIN REAR DRIVESHAFT COUPLINGS, LAND ROVER BRANDED PART NUMBER TVF100010, MANUFACTURED FROM APRIL 2011 THROUGH NOVEMBER 2011, SOLD FOR USE AS SERVICE PARTS FOR CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1995-1999 DISCOVERY, 1999-2004 DISCOVERY II, AND 1995 RANGE ROVER CLASSIC VEHICLES. SOME OF THE REAR DRIVESHAFT COUPLINGS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN MANUFACTURED TO THE REQUIRED ENGINEERING DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS AND MAY EXHIBIT THE ONSET OF JOINT SEPARATION, PRECLUDED BY DRIVE LINE VIBRATION.
- Consequence: IF THIS INCREASED VIBRATION WARNING SIGN IS IGNORED, CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE DRIVE COUPLING CAN OCCUR. THE DRIVESHAFT MAY DETACH FROM THE VEHICLE WHILE IN MOTION RESULTING IN LOSS OF DRIVE AND LOSS OF TRANSMISSION PARK FUNCTIONALITY, INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH AND/OR INJURY.
- Remedy: LAND ROVER WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE AFFECTED REAR DRIVESHAFT COUPLERS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 4, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT JAGUAR LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA AT 1-201-818-8500.
- Manufacturer: LAND ROVER
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE ACTIVE CORNERING ENHANCEMENT (ACE) PUMP BANJO BOLT LOOSES TORQUE AND ALLOWS FLUID TO LEAK PAST THE JOINT.
- Consequence: THE FLUID FROM THE PUMP JOINT CAN IGNITE, RESULTING IN AN UNDER HOOD FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE VEHICLES FOR LEAKAGE. IF NO LEAKAGE IS EVIDENT, THE BANJO BOLT WILL BE RE-TIGHTENED. IF LEAKAGE IS EVIDENT, THE BANJO BOLT AND DOWTY WASHERS WILL BE REPLACED.
