2022 Mazda Cx-30 problems

mazda logo

The Mazda CX-30 is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by Mazda. Based on the fourth-generation Mazda3, it debuted at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, to slot in between the CX-3 and the CX-5. It went on sale in Japan on 24 October 2019, with global units being produced at Mazda's Hiroshima factory, North and South American units built in Salamanca, Guanajuato, Mexico, Thailand and initial Australian units made at the AutoAlliance Thailand plant in Rayong, and China-market units produced in Nanjing by Changan Mazda.

Overview

The CX-30 features lightweight construction to improve performance and economy, and is offered in either front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive.

According to Naohito Saga, the CX-30's program manager, the new model is targeted to drivers who are still single or are married and starting a family in the United States. Mazda chief designer Ryo Yanagisawa said that it will be more acceptable as a family car in Europe and Japan. Saga also noted that Mazda named the vehicle CX-30, to avoid confusion with the China-only CX-4.

The CX-30 was released in the UK in December 2019 and in North America in January 2020. It was launched in the Philippines on 28 November 2019, Malaysia on 15 January 2020, Indonesia on 28 January 2020, and Thailand on 6 March 2020. The 2.5 turbo model was released internationally in February 2021.

Common 2022 Mazda Cx-30 problems

The Mazda CX-30, a compact crossover SUV, is known for its style, performance, and safety features. However, like any vehicle, it has been reported to have certain issues and problems. Here are some of the common problems with the Mazda CX-30, based on complaints from owners:

  • Windshield Is Blurry, Distorted, Double Vision: This issue has been reported primarily for the 2021 model year. The problem is with the windshield, which is reported to be blurry, distorted, or causing double vision. This can be a significant safety concern, as it can impair the driver's ability to see the road clearly.
  • Battery Problems: There have been multiple reports of battery problems in the Mazda CX-30, particularly in the early production years. The battery issues can manifest as sudden illumination of the engine light and battery light, or as the vehicle's automatic emergency braking (AEB) feature erroneously activating, causing abrupt stops.
  • Transmission Issues: The 2020 Mazda CX-30 has been reported to have transmission issues, specifically lunging and chirping. The problem was first noticed at around 40,000 miles. The owner reported hearing a chirping sound from the transmission and experiencing the car lunging and hunting for gears, which made it unsafe to drive.
  • Recall - Tail Life Gate: The 2021 Mazda CX-30 has been subject to a recall due to potential problems with the tailgate. The recall affects vehicles with less than 2,000 miles on the odometer.
  • Visibility/Wiper Problems: There have been reports of visibility problems, specifically related to the windshield. Some owners have reported warped glass, which impairs visibility. Additionally, two complaints have been filed about the vehicle's Forward Collision Avoidance system, which has been known to cause unexpected automatic braking, nearly causing accidents.
  • Electrical System Issues: Electrical system issues have been reported five times, with some of these problems leading to auto light and power steering malfunctions. These issues can affect the vehicle's overall functionality and safety, particularly if they cause the power steering to malfunction.

It's important to note that these issues are based on consumer complaints and may not represent the overall reliability of the Mazda CX-30. Additionally, some of these issues may be isolated incidents, and the frequency and severity of these problems can vary depending on the specific model year and production batch. When considering purchasing a Mazda CX-30, it's recommended to research the specific model year and check for any recalls or known issues.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-16
  • VIN: 3MVDMBCLXNM
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I travelled to Phoenix for a concert and after the concert I was driving back to my hotel room. I was traveling on the freeway and I heard a popping sound like a gunshot was hitting my window. I slowed down and ducked, thankfully no traffic surrounding me, only behind me. No vehicles were in front of me, as it was late at night, only two vehicles behind me and no overpasses. I pulled off the road, and found that my sunroof had exploded. It seems like the glass had blown from the inside shooting outward. It was very scary and thankfully no vehicles or heavy traffic as it would have caused an accident if there was. I’m not sure how anything could have hit the window because there was no traffic and no one in front of me to kick up debris. I did google and see that pressure changes have been causing this to happen to other vehicles and the only thing I can think of is the pressure changes of traveling to a new city which is very hot and driving with my ac on for long period of time possibly caused the sunroof to explode. It is currently awaiting repair at my local Mazda dealership now. The vehicle is just under 2 years old and has no damage. I don’t currently have any invoices because it’s still waiting at my local dealership.

STEERING,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-20
  • VIN: 3MVDMBEY9NM
  • Components: STEERING,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The steering wheel seems to prematurely wear on newer Mazda vehicles including my Mazda CX-30 from 2022. Mazda claims hand sanitizer to be the main culprit but I suspect quality issues and materials to play a factor. Many can be found with wear on the steering wheel even starting with less than 50 thousand miles. Some have received warranty claims while others are denied.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-05
  • VIN: 3MVDMBEY9NM
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: It has an oil consumption issue. Every 3,000-3,500 miles is will give the oil low light. It will be 1 quart low. The car takes 6 quarts of 5w30 synthetic oil and requires oil changes every 7,500-8,000 miles. I have had to put a quart in every time. I have taken it into the dealership and a third party oil service as well. The dealership has no idea why it keeps running through the oil. They state that it's a known issue but no recall.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-05
  • VIN: 3MVDMBEY9NM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: There have been 3 different ongoing issues. The car was ordered and delivered brand new in April 2022. At 4,000 miles and again at 12,000 mile is would display low oil and require 1 quart of oil. The dealership acknowledged that it has an oil consumption issue, unresolved. I have to bring it in every time it is low prior to its required oil change time/miles. At 19,742 miles the cars battery died. They replaced it an have no reason why it died. Every time I'm driving in the mountain pass the transmission will not advance above 3rd gear. The engine will whine and I have to put it into manual and move it to 4th and or 5th gear. When I coming down the other side of the mountain, I have the same issue with it only advancing to 3rd and not proceeding to 4th or 5th. Then when I reach the bottom and on flat road the message- safety system and deactivated. This last for apx 10 minutes. The dealership has no idea why it does it.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-08
  • VIN: 3MVDMBCL5NM
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: On June 07, 2023, I was driving on the highway when I noticed a rumbling noise from the front driver-side tire (215/65R18). I got out and inspected the tires and observed nothing wrong with the tires. The next day (06/08) my wife was driving the vehicle on the highway (60 mph) and the vehicle started to shake. She pull the vehicle over and got out to check the vehicle. She observed the front driver-side tire sidewall was completely torn open. My wife never hit anything or ran over anything. The tire shop (Kost) could explain what happened to the tire. The shop person stated that it looked like a complete failure of the sidewall. The tire had approx. 9000 miles on it. In all my years of driving I never had a tire fail this bad.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-08
  • VIN: 3MVDMBCL4NM
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I've used cruise control for decades and use it even on city streets, so I can concentrate on the road rather than my speed. The concept of adaptive cruise control is great, but the execution is very flawed on my Mazda CX30. The system fails to recognize lane separation and turn lanes where lines do not exist. The result is the Mazda CX30 adaptive cruise frequently brakes to slow the car for vehicles not in the lane it is in. At some point this is going to result in a rear end accident, because of other vehicles not allowing proper distance and my Mazda CX30 slowing for no valid reason. I shared this issue multiple times with dealership service, with Mazda via their website and with Mazda via emailed surveys. Dealership service says everything is working correctly. Mazda has not responded. If I could turn this functionality off, and have it stay off, I would do so and not report it here, but it turns back on every time the car is started. I was puzzled by this being an issue for me, on my Mazda CX30, but not for friends with other vehicles. What I learned talking to friends is that they rarely use cruise on city streets, which is the primary location for the issue. I discovered a Cheverolet Traverse, I rented, only beeped at me when it detected issues at locations where the Mazda CX30 slowed.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-15
  • VIN: 3MVDMBEY8NM
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: "low oil" indicator came on after less than 5000 miles after oil change. Found oil to be 1 quart low. Scheduled oil changes are 10,000 miles apart, which suggests engine has defect which allows oil to be consumed within the engine. No signs of oil leakage.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-03
  • VIN: 3MVDMBCL2NM
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-26
  • VIN: 3MVDMBCL2NM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: On December 26, 2022, after running errands for an hour or so and parking outside in parking lots, I restarted the car and pulled out of a parking lot. 3 dashboard warning lights flashed, one after the other: Engine malfunction, have vehicle inspected; Dynamic stability control malfunction, have the vehicle inspected; Safety and driver support systems partially disabled, drive safely. Vehicle was stuck in high gear and would not shift to lower gear as I pulled into the driveway (fortunately I was close to home), forcing me to have to floor the gas pedal to go up the very slight driveway incline. Dealership thought they fixed the problem, exact same thing happened on 12/28/22 (same dashboard warnings, stuck in high gear) when we were on the highway. Car was barely able to make it up the exit ramp in heavy traffic, could easily have been rear-ended. We were able to get the vehicle home by driving in Manual. It would still not downshift, even in manual, but we managed to get home (about 20 miles) in high gear with slow acceleration. Once again dealership thought they fixed the problem. Exact same thing happened (same dashboard warnings, stuck in high gear) for the third time on 1/31/23. Fortunately I was close to home and was able to pull up the driveway by flooring the gas pedal once again. Car is currently at the dealership service center again. Vehicle has 8,156 miles.

AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-19
  • VIN: 3MVDMBCL2NM
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: Suddenly, for no known reason, the dash displayed a warning that the seat belts and air bags are not properly operational and to get the vehicle inspected. Note there is less than 3000 miles on the vehicle. The vehicle has not been involved in any collisions and has not been damaged. I have scheduled an inspection with the dealer, and an internet search revealed this is a problem with new CX-30s.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-21
  • VIN: 3MVDMBBL4NM
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: The windshield is wavy. I don't know if it is the shape of the window, but very hard to see it of. Several owners have the same problem in online forums. Can't drive my vehicle long distances because I get extreme headaches, and visibility is decreased.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-06
  • VIN: 3MVDMBEYXNM
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: I took delivery of a 2022 Mazda CX-30 recently, and noticed that the windshield was very distorted. Moving my head caused the image to shift in unexpected ways. The windshield was noticeably wavy and caused double vision. The dealer replaced the windshield, but the replacement is also noticeably wavy, with an almost orange peel look through the new windshield. The new windshield also distorts the active driving display as well, which was not apparent on the original. When I complained about the replacement, the dealer's service manager said that what I am experiencing is "normal", and that "all CX-30s are this way", even though he previously admitted that he had never seen it before, and that the CX-50 he was driving did not have this issue at all. I see that Mazda has a technical service bulletin for this problem for older model CX-30s. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2021/MC-10203731-0001.pdf It seems that Mazda has not fixed this issue, as it is very noticeable on my 2022 model CX-30. I can understand that glass will be refractive under extreme angles, but this is when I'm looking directly ahead. If I move my head at all, the image bends and distorts. Unfortunately, the issue does not lend itself well to photos, as it is most noticeable when you have both eyes open (two eyes see through the glass at slightly different angles and points on the glass). If I close one eye, I no longer get double vision, but I doubt that's the safest way to drive.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-14
  • VIN: 3MVDMBDY9NM
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I purchased a new 2022 Mazda CX-30 in early 2022. While driving home from out of state recently, a low oil warning light popped up on the dash. I immediately pulled over and checked the level to find only 2-3mm of coverage on the dipstick, well below the safe range. I topped the engine off with a full quart of oil. The vehicle only had 68xx miles on it when this happened.

Negative 2022 Mazda Cx-30 car reviews

  1. Rogelio Pouros 2025-05-06

Positives: The SUV looks great and has powerful performance. The handling and interior are also impressive. Negatives: The backseat room and MPG could be improved. Additionally, the gas tank is quite small which can be frustrating. The headroom is also lacking.

  2. D'angelo Altenwerth 2024-11-27

After driving the CX-30 for 3 months, I have noticed some pros and cons. On the positive side, the car looks great, has a good layout, and the info system with knob works very well after some practice. The seats are comfortable for short trips and the car handles well. However, there are some areas that could be improved. Firstly, there is a constant beeping as soon as the engine is turned on, which can be quite annoying. Secondly, the built-in spyware can be a concern for some drivers. If you use Mazda connect, you are tracked for speed, location, and driving habits. Although you can turn this off in the menu, it asks you every time you start the car if you want to enable it. Thirdly, the gas tank is quite small, which means frequent refilling is required. Fourthly, the driving position is great for short trips under 30 minutes, but for longer trips, it can feel a bit uncomfortable. Lastly, the electronics can be inconsistent at times. Despite these issues, I appreciate the CX-30 for what it is and would recommend it to others with similar needs.

  3. Freddy Welch 2024-09-16

Beautiful car! It handles really well, but unfortunately, it's not very comfortable for drives longer than 30 minutes.

  4. Adrian Schiller 2024-08-26

The CX-30 has its pros and cons, but I'll focus on my personal experience with the car. During the test drive, I found the cabin to be cozy and comfortable, especially with the luxury package. The car's handling and steering responsiveness were also impressive compared to other SUVs and CUVs I tried. However, I did have some issues with the infotainment system, particularly with Apple Play malfunctioning frequently. The transmission also had a tendency to shift gears frequently, and the engine could be quite loud. Additionally, the seat belt alarm can be quite annoying, and the key fob is quite large with tiny buttons. The paint color (Machine Grey) was a bit of a letdown compared to other metallic paints available, and the driver's door wedge shape can be dangerous. It's worth noting that the car is run by computers, including the steering, which may be a concern for some. Overall, my experience with the CX-30 has been mixed, but I appreciate the comfort and handling it provides.

  5. Jamie Hermann 2024-02-18

We've been enjoying our 2022 CX-30 Turbo Premium Plus for about a month now and the turbo engine is excellent! However, we did encounter an issue on the second day. When we lowered and raised the rear seats, the sharp front edge of the cargo floor caused the lower rear seat fabric to bunch up and get trapped. We did some research and found that this has been a common problem for all model years, with no resolution from Mazda yet. We're waiting for Mazda to provide a fix before we bring it in, so we don't have to go through trial and error attempts. In the meantime, we've instructed our family to partially remove the rear floor before raising the rear seats to avoid damaging the fabric. We hope to hear from Mazda soon about the recommended fix. We gave it 2 stars because this has been a recurring issue since the model's release in 2020, and we believe it should have been addressed by now.

Positive 2022 Mazda Cx-30 car reviews

  1. Keeley Davis 2025-08-18

My wife and I recently purchased a CX30 Premium Turbo after weeks of reading, reviewing, and test driving. We were impressed with the value of this little SUV, which offers stellar features. The quality fit and finish of the interior is comparable to some luxury brands. We opted for the Turbo model for the extra power on our road trips. While the back seats can be a bit cramped, it's important to remember that this is a compact SUV. It's perfect for short trips across town with four people or small children. Mazda has done an excellent job with this vehicle, which offers great handling, a smooth ride, and quiet operation. I highly recommend taking it for a test drive.

  2. Jonathon Kirlin 2025-08-16

Hi there! As a long-time Mazda owner, I have always appreciated their driving dynamics and dependability. Although I am aware that they may not be as fuel efficient as other brands, I have always found their handling to be superior to other brands in this class. My wife and I recently purchased the 2022 CX-30 Carbon Edition and we absolutely love it! The blacked-out rims, polymetal grey, and red leather seats make it a real head-turner. We were not really fond of the brown and black interior of the Premium, so when the Carbon Edition was announced, we knew we had to have it. Since we do not have children and do not need a large vehicle, the CX-30 was perfect for us. The base 2.5 liter 186 hp was a huge leap in pep from our previous Mazda3s, so we did not feel the need for the turbo model. We also couldn’t justify adding another $5,000 to the price, especially now that you really can’t haggle the price of a new vehicle with the chip shortage. Thank you for taking the time to read about our experience with Mazda! With the Sport mode, it feels like adding a turbo, in my opinion, and I get to keep my 5K. Auto journalists criticized the base engine before the turbo came out and said it needed more power, but it's unfair to compare a 186 hp engine to cars with 400 hp or more. I have been following auto journalists' reviews of the CX-30 since it first came out 2 years ago and I agree with some of their criticisms. Firstly, it's not as roomy as other vehicles in its class, like the Subaru Crosstrek. However, I actually like the cocoon feeling and, being a not-so-tall person, it's fine for me and I am used to the Mazda3 interior. Secondly, the gas tank is the same size as the AWD Mazda3, which is 12.7 gallons. Since this is a CUV, I would have expected a slightly larger tank. So, I am filling up more often than I would like. Although the 2.5 liter is not as fuel-efficient as the 2.0 155 hp that I am used to, the pluses are way more than the minuses with this great little crossover. This is the most luxurious Mazda I have ever owned! I can't get over how much they keep improving the interiors. Admittedly, I paid $6,000 more for this model (preferred) than I did for the 2012 GT (premium) hatchback, which was the top of the line with leather seats and Bose audio. The base audio system is impressive. Mazda has done a tremendous job with their Harmonic Acoustics audio system (speakers are by Pioneer), and I do not regret at all not getting the Bose in this CX-30. The 8-speaker system continues to blow my mind. Although I am sure the new Bose system is still as good, if not better, than in our 2012 Mazda3, I am completely happy with this audio system. Again, the interior is beautiful, simple, and clean.Mazda has really streamlined their design, moving away from the cluttered button-heavy dashboards of the past (like our 2012 Mazda3 hatch). While I'm still getting used to all the new safety features, I'm confident I'll get the hang of it soon. The visibility is good for me, and while the windows are shorter than other brands, I prefer having more metal between me and other vehicles. The ride is incredibly smooth and quiet, especially compared to our 2012 Mazda3 or even the 2016 model. It's so quiet that I find myself accidentally reaching speeds of 90 mph! The cargo area is also a plus, with more space than our 2012 hatch, even if it's not as wide. I mainly use it for hauling plants, mulch, and dirt, and it has plenty of space for that. I even upgraded to all-weather cargo and floor mats to make cleaning a breeze. Overall, this is an amazing little 'premium' crossover that's a joy to drive. I knew it would be before I even test drove it - that's what Mazda does best! I'm excited for Mazda to release their hybrid models in the next few years, as they need to catch up with other brands. I'm glad they're teaming up with Toyota to make this happen. We'll need to replace our 2012 in the next couple of years, and I hope to replace it with a hybrid so we can have at least one fuel-efficient vehicle in the garage.

  3. Milford Kilback 2025-08-16

This car is a true delight for those who love to drive, and by that, I mean a drive that is much more than just getting to a destination. Mazda has gone out of its way to create a driving experience that is truly exceptional. As someone who has raced my whole life, I can tell you that an enormous effort was exerted to create a feel that often only Porsche drivers understand. The car is taunt, precise, and offers no surprises or shortcomings. If you really know how to use the pedal, it is easy to get better than 40mpg on the freeway going 60-65 mph. On one trip of 45 miles, I even got 44mpg! The interior is exceptional, and the sound system (in my model) is top-notch. It's also very quiet on the highway. After checking out all the other options, this was my first Mazda, and I can confidently say that whether it's for me or my kids, I'll begin my checks for another car with Mazda now. You won't be disappointed!

  4. Waino O'Keefe 2025-07-26

I recently purchased a 2022 CX-30 Premium Trim with a metal grey metallic exterior. I love everything about it! The engine is just the right size, the leather interior is luxurious, and the gauges and buttons are easy to use. The Bose 12 speaker sound system and heads up display are fantastic, and there are dozens of other features that make this car a dream to drive. I can't think of a single thing that I don't like - it's absolutely perfect!

The CX-30 is definitely underrated. I absolutely love its appearance, handling, and power. The infotainment system is also great. I think the lack of a touch screen is actually a huge positive that greatly improves the driver's experience. Despite what some reviews say, the system's controls are very intuitive. Overall, this vehicle is simply exceptional for its class.
