Common 2001 Land rover Discovery ii problems

Based on the information from the sources provided, here are the common problems with the Land Rover Discovery Series II 2001 as reported by owners:

  • Oil Pump Failure: Rover V8 engines in the Discovery II are prone to oil pump failures, leading to low oil pressure, especially at idle. If left unaddressed, this can result in engine damage, potentially requiring a complete rebuild. It's crucial to replace the oil pump promptly to prevent extensive engine wear.
  • Suspension Issues: The Discovery II commonly experiences problems with its air suspension system, particularly with air springs wearing out and leaking air. This can strain the compressor, leading to potential failure. Additionally, broken road springs are a known issue, often affecting the left-hand side spring. Addressing these issues promptly is essential to maintain proper handling and performance.
  • Injector and Fuel System Problems: Fuel system issues, such as poor starting, performance issues, and noisy pumps, can arise in the Discovery II. These problems may be caused by injector washers leaking or cracks in the in-head fuel rail. Proper diagnosis and replacement of faulty components are necessary to ensure optimal engine performance.
  • Camshaft and Bearing Wear: Over time, older Rover V8 engines in the Discovery II can experience camshaft and bearing wear, leading to power loss and performance issues. If camshafts are worn down, replacement and potentially upgrading to higher-performance camshafts may be required. Addressing these wear issues promptly can prevent further engine damage and maintain engine efficiency.

These common problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues that arise with the Land Rover Discovery Series II 2001 to ensure its longevity and optimal performance.

What is the most common problem with the Discovery 2?

The usual problem is that the air springs wear out (look for perishing rubber on the crease in the bag) and leak air. If they continue to leak air this can put the compressor under strain which can then fail.

What is the air suspension problem on the Land Rover Discovery 2?

Common Air Suspension Problems in Disco 2

One common problem with Disco 2's air suspension is air leaks. These leaks can occur in the air bags, causing the vehicle to sag or lose its ride height. Air leaks require immediate attention as they can lead to further damage to the suspension system.

Are older Land Rover Discovery reliable?

For example, the Discovery Series I vehicles, which were produced from 1989 to 1998, are considered to be the least reliable generation in aggregate. If possible, ask the seller of a used Land Rover Discovery whether they encountered any of these faults in their time driving it.

Is Land Rover Discovery high maintenance?

A Land Rover Discovery will cost about $16,485 for maintenance and repairs during its first 10 years of service. This is more than the industry average for luxury SUV models by $771. There is also a 49.63% chance that a Discovery will require a major repair during that time.

  • Summary: WE WERE IN ROUTE TO MY NIECES GRADUATION ON ROUTE 76 WHICH IS A 55 MPH ROAD. WITH ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING THE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT AT ABOUT 45 MPH CAME APART FROM THE TRANSMISSION SIDE AND CAUSED THE FRONT TIRES TO LOCK UP SENDING MYSELF ,MY WIFE AND MY NEPHEW CAREENING OFF THE ROAD. WE WERE VERY LUCKY, NARROWLY MISSING A POLE. THE TRUCK ITSELF WAS NOT DAMAGED BY THE ACCIDENT BECAUSE WE STAYED ON BASICALLY GRASS, BUT IT SCARED US ALL. HOWEVER THE TRUCK WAS DAMAGED BY THE DRIVE SHAFT SEVERELY, AS IT TORE UP EVERYTHING IN ITS PATH. THE SPEEDO CABLE, EXHAUST, AND IT PUNCHED A HOLE IN THE TOP OF THE TRANSMISSION DESTROYING IT. I HAVE THE OLD DRIVE SHAFT(WHAT'S LEFT OF IT) AND ALREADY PURCHASED A NEW ONE NOT REALIZING AT THAT POINT THAT THE TRANNY WAS DESTROYED UNTIL I REPLACED IT AND TOOK A CLOSER LOOK. THIS TRUCK WAS PURCHASED NEW BY MY MOTHER IN LAW AND WAS PASSED DOWN TO US ON OUR WEDDING DAY. I DO KNOW A FEW THINGS ABOUT CARS AND THIS IS ONE OF THEM, THIS HAS TO BE SOME KIND OF DESIGN FLAW. DRIVE SHAFTS IN MY EXPERIENCE DO NOT JUST BLOW APART WITH NO WARNING AND WITH NO SAFETY STRAP EITHER. WE ALL MADE IT OUT OF THIS OK, BUT I WOULD SO SADDENED IF THEIR WERE INJURIES TO MY FAMILY DUE TO A 250 DOLLAR POORLY DESIGNED PART. *TR

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-03-15
  • VIN: SALTY12481A
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: ON MY 2001 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY II MY GAS PEDAL WOULD GET STUCK, ESPECIALLY WHEN FIRST TURNING THE CAR ON. SOMETIMES I WOULD PRESS ON THE GAS PEDAL AND AND I'D HAVE TO PRESS DOUBLY HARD TO GET THE CAR TO MOVE, OF COURSE RESULTING IN A BIGGER FORWARD SURGE THAN I EXPECTED WHICH IS DANGEROUS. SOMETIMES I WOULD JUST TAP ON THE GAS PEDAL AND IT WOULD SURGE FORWARD ON ITS OWN. THIS REMINDED ME VERY MUCH OF THE MAJOR RECALL A DOZEN OR SO YEARS AGO OF THE AUDI CARS THAT HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM. WHEN I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER, I HAD TO PAY $89.00 TO FIX IT. THEY SAID THAT YES THEY KNOW ABOUT THE PROBLEM--THE THROTTLE GETS DIRT IN IT AND BACKED UP AND CLOGGED SO THEY HAVE TO CLEAN IT OUT. IN FACT, THE SERVICE PERSON SAID, IT IS SO COMMON A PROBLEM THAT HE THEN PICKED UP A THROTTLE ON THE TABLE, AND SAID THEY KEEP THIS THROTTLE HERE ON DISPLAY IN THE SHOWROOM TO SHOW CUSTOMERS HOW IT GETS STUCK. ALTHOUGH I FIXED THIS PROBLEM ON MARCH 15, 2004, THIS INCIDENT ALWAYS BOTHERED ME. I FEEL THAT THE MANUFACTURER KNOWS OF THIS PROBLEM WHICH CAN BE QUITE DANGEROUS AND THAT THE PROBLEM IS ACTUALLY FREQUENT ENOUGH THAT THEY HAVE A MODEL ON DISPLAY TO WARRANT IT A RECALL.*AK
