Common 1999 Land rover Discovery ii problems
The Land Rover Discovery II, produced from 1998 to 2004, is known for its robust design and off-road capabilities, but it also has some common problems that owners have reported.
- Oil Pump Failure: Oil pumps can fail more often on Rover V8 engines than on other engines. Symptoms of this include the low oil pressure light coming on, particularly at idle. The oil pump gears can crack, leading to insufficient oil pressure to lubricate the bearings, rods, pistons, etc. If replaced promptly, damage to the engine can be averted. However, if left, the wear on the engine will probably mean a complete engine rebuild. Some 2003 Discoveries also had an issue where there was a casting problem with front housings that resulted in low oil pressure. Most of the engines affected by this problem self-destructed long ago and it is not really something to worry about in Discoveries still running today.
- Worn Camshafts: If your Rover V8 seems down on power from its younger years, it could be that the camshaft lobes are worn down. Replacement and higher-performance camshafts can be used, but replacement labor includes removing the front cover and everything above the valley pan. With the amount of labor this involves, I would recommend considering an LS engine swap, where you can get a significant bump over stock power.
- Rust and Overheating: The main issues with the 1999 Land Rover Discovery are overheating and rust. These issues are fixable, but they can be serious. The all-aluminum engine is generally good, but it can have issues with overheating. Regular maintenance, including axle and coolant systems replacement/services, can help prevent these issues.
- Electrical Issues: The Land Rover Discovery II can also have electrical issues. These can include problems with the electronic gas pedal, the wear of the cardan shaft joints, the jamming of the door and trunk lid locks, the failure of the ABS sensors, and the contamination of electrical contacts. The immobilizer, which is sensitive to external sources of interference, can also cause issues. These problems can lead to the SUV being paralyzed, but they can usually be fixed by moving the car by 200 meters or by checking the wiring and connectors .
In conclusion, while the Land Rover Discovery II is a robust and capable SUV, it can have a number of common problems, including issues with the all-wheel-drive system, the engine, the oil pump, the camshafts, rust and overheating, and electrical issues. Regular maintenance and careful inspection can help prevent or address these issues, but they can be serious and expensive to fix.
What is the most common problem with the Discovery 2?
The usual problem is that the air springs wear out (look for perishing rubber on the crease in the bag) and leak air. If they continue to leak air this can put the compressor under strain which can then fail.
Are older Land Rover Discovery reliable?
For example, the Discovery Series I vehicles, which were produced from 1989 to 1998, are considered to be the least reliable generation in aggregate. If possible, ask the seller of a used Land Rover Discovery whether they encountered any of these faults in their time driving it.
What is the air suspension problem on the Land Rover Discovery 2?
Common Air Suspension Problems in Disco 2
One common problem with Disco 2's air suspension is air leaks. These leaks can occur in the air bags, causing the vehicle to sag or lose its ride height. Air leaks require immediate attention as they can lead to further damage to the suspension system.
How many miles will a Land Rover Discovery 2 last?
How Long Do Land Rovers Last? Land Rovers have an average life span of 13 years or 200,000 miles when well cared for.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-09-01
- VIN: SALTY1240XA
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: MY 1999 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2 DEVELOPED A FUEL LEAK ON THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP CLOSE TO THE OUTLET WHERE THE FUEL FLOW MAKES A 90 DEGREE TURN BEFORE EXITING THE FUEL PUMP. I NOTICED THE SMELL OF FUEL (GASOLINE ) AROUND THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE WHILE PARKED. BUT I HAD RECENTLY FILLED UP THE TANK AND THOUGHT IT WAS JUST SOME SPILLAGE FROM THE FILL UP. I KEPT SMELLING THE FUMES FOR SEVERAL MONTHS BEFORE I FINALLY WATCHED A YOUTUBE VIDEO SHOWING HOW TO REPAIR A FUEL PUMP ON MY VEHICLE , WHEN I CUT THE CARPET TO EXPOSE THE COVER PLATE AND REMOVED THE COVER PLATE I NOTICED A POOL OF GASOLINE SITTING INSIDE THE ROUND PART IN THE CENTER OF THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP. I STOPPED DRIVING OTHER PEOPLE AROUND IN MY LAND ROVER BECAUSE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF IGNITION , THE GAS TANK ITSELF WAS COVERED WITH GASOLINE RESIDUE THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS FUEL PUMP THAT MAY KILL THE OCCUPANTS OF THIS VEHICLE WERE IT TO IGNITE FOR SOME REASON. I THINK THIS FUEL PUMP SHOULD BE RECALLED AND REDESIGNED TO ADD STRENGTH TO THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP. A FEW MORE CENTS WORTH OF PLASTIC WOULD SOLVE THIS ISSUE BUT THIS MANUFACTURER IS MOST LIKELY LOOKING AT THE RESALE VALUE OF THESE PARTS AS ARE ALL MANUFACTURERS TODAY. I BOUGHT THIS LAND ROVER THINKING THAT IT WOULD BE A STURDY VEHICLE TO DRIVE AND TO FEEL SAFER DRIVING , ESPECIALLY WHILE DRIVING MY CHILD AROUND IN IT. ALSO THESE FUEL PUMPS COST WAY TOO MUCH COMPARED TO OTHER ALMOST IDENTICAL FUEL PUMPS MADE BY THE SAME MANUFACTURER AND THAT IS WHY I HAVEN'T ALREADY FIXED IT MYSELF.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-05-25
- VIN: SALTY1243XA
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: MY 1999 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY II MADE A GRINDING NOISE AND THEN A LOUD EXPLOSION SOUND WHILE DRIVING AT 70 MPH ON THE INTERSTATE. THE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT FELL OFF, BUSTED THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND RIPPED A HOLE IN THE FIRE WALL AND TRANSMISSION CASE. APPARENTLY THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH MY YEAR OF LAND ROVER AND NOTHING IS BEING DONE TO CORRECT THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM. THIS IS MY DAUGHTERS CAR AND SHE IS VERY FORTUNATE THAT THE DRIVE SHAFT DID NOT RIP THROUGH THE FLOOR BOARD OR THAT ANOTHER CAR BEHIND HER WASN'T HIT BY THE PARTS. *TR
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-02-28
- VIN: SALTY1241YA
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: MY 1999 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY MADE A GRINDING NOISE, AND CAME TO A SCREECHING HALT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 10-15 MPH. IT TURNED OUT THAT THE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT SHEARED IN HALF. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A TRANSMISSION SPECIALIST IN MY TOWN. WHEN I SPOKE TO BOTH THAT MECHANIC AS WELL AS MY REGULAR MECHANIC TODAY ABOUT THE ISSUE, BOTH OF THEM HAD OTHER INSTANCES OF THIS HAPPENING TO LAND ROVER DISCOVERIES ALL AT AROUND 100,000 MILES. (MY VEHICLE IS AT 99,000) BOTH MECHANICS SAID THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING AT 100,000 MILES, AND IT CAN BE A SEVERE PROBLEM, ESPECIALLY AT HIGHER SPEEDS (IN ONE OF THE OTHER INSTANCES THE SHAFT RIPPED THROUGH THE FLOORBOARDS AND TRANSMISSION CASE = OVER $4500 IN DAMAGE) I SPOKE TO BOTH MY DEALER (PARAMUS, NJ AND SOMEONE IN THE HQ - MAHWAH, NJ) AND BOTH STATED UNLESS THE PROBLEM IS COVERED BY A RECALL, THEY CONSIDER IT THE CUSTOMERS RESPONSIBILITY. I AM NOT LOOKING FOR MONEY - MY REPAIR IS ABOUT $1200. WHAT I WOULD LIKE IS FOR LAND ROVER TO AT THE VERY LEAST TO SEND A LETTER TO OWNERS ADVISING THEM AT AROUND 90,000 - 100,000 MILES THE JOINTS IN THE DRIVESHAFT BE ACCESSED TO AVOID A MAJOR ISSUE. THE TOWN I LIVE IN HAS APPROX 6,000 PEOPLE, AND ALREADY 4 INCIDENTS OF THE EXACT SAME ISSUE HAVE OCCURRED. I AM WORRIED THAT OUR OLDER MODELS ARE NOW REACHING THE 100,000 MILE MARK, AND THIS ISSUE WILL CONTINUE WITH NEWER MODELS AS THE MILES ADD UP. BOTH MECHANICS HAVE SAID THIS CAN BE A SERIOUS ISSUE AT HIGHER SPEEDS,THANKFULLY MY SITUATION DID NOT TURN OUT THAT BADLY, BUT I AM UPSET THAT LAND ROVER KNOWS ABOUT THIS ISSUE, AND WILL NOT DO ANYTHING TO AVOID IT IN THE FUTURE. I AM WILLING TO DO WHATEVER RESEARCH IS NEEDED TO HELP SOLVE THIS OVERSIGHT, AND GET THE WORD SPREAD TO OTHERS. *TR
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-01-01
- VIN: SALTY1248XA
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: I HAVE A 1999 DISCOVERY II. THE ABS WARNING LIGHTS ON THE DASH HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ON; NICKNAMED AS YOU MIGHT ALREADY KNOW "THE THREE AMIGOS" BY THOUSANDS OF LAND ROVER OWNERS. THE THREE AMIGOS REFERS TO THE THREE WARNING LIGHTS ON DASHBOARD: ABS, TC-TRACTION CONTROL, DOWNHILL DESCENT. I WAS TOLD BY THE LOCAL DEALER IN ENCINO, CA IT WAS THE ABS MODULATOR. THEY DIDN'T PUT IT ON PAPER, BUT THEY SAID VERBALLY IF YOU DON'T GET THE "ABS MODULATOR REPLACED, YOU WILL HAVE BRAKE FAILURE. YET, LAND ROVER WON'T RECALL IT. TENS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE "THREE AMIGOS", CAUSED BY THE ABS MODULATOR. THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED CASE. NEXT TIME YOU DRIVE BY A 1999 LAND ROVER, LOOK ON THEIR DASHBOARD, AND YOU WILL SEE 3 WARNING LIGHTS ON. LAND ROVER, NEEDS TO RECALL THIS, AND REPLACE THE ABS MODULATOR. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-04-06
- VIN: SALTY124XXA
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM
- Summary: I RECENTLY BOUGHT A LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2 (1999 MODEL - 75,000 MI.). MY ABS BRAKE LIGHT, HILL DECENT LIGHT, AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS KEEP COMING ON INTERMITTENTLY. I HAVE READ HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ON THIS ISSUE ONLINE. APPARENTLY THE 3 ITEMS (ABS, HILL DECENT, AND TRACTION CONTROL) ARE ALL INTERCONNECTED ITEMS - GENERALLY CALLED THREE AMIGO PROBLEM ONLINE. THE MAJOR CONCERN IS THAT THE ABS DOES NOT WORK AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WILL SOMETIMES GO TO THE FLOOR, BRAKES SHUTTER AND ON OCCASION BARELY ENGAGE AT ALL. I HAVE ALMOST WRECKED THE VEHICLE ON A COUPLE OF OCCASIONS. I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO DRIVE MY CAR. I CAN'T AFFORD THE $3500 THE LAND ROVER DEALER WANTS TO FIX THIS DESIGN FLAW. I CAN'T GET RID OF THE VEHICLE BECAUSE NOBODY WANTS TO BUY OR TRADE FOR A CAR WITH ALL THESE WARNING LIGHTS ON. AGAIN, IF YOU LOOK ONLINE YOU WILL SEE THAT THIS IS A LAND ROVER DESIGN FLAW AND THAT ALMOST EVERY ONE OF THESES VEHICLES IS AFFECTED. LAND ROVER CLAIMS IT IS FROM ABUSE OR LACK OF MAINTAINING THIS "WEARABLE ITEM." IF THIS WAS REALLY THE CASE, WOULD THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE, WITH MILEAGE RANGING FROM NEW TO HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF MILES, HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM? *TR

- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ACTIVE CORNERING ENHANCEMENT (ACE). THE HIGH-PRESSURE HYDRAULIC PIPE THAT RUNS FROM THE ACE PUMP TO THE ACE VALVE BLOCK COULD FRACTURE AT ITS UNION WITH THE PUMP.
- Consequence: THIS WILL RESULT IN A LOSS OF HYDRAULIC FLUID. A LOW FLUID LEVEL CAN SUBSEQUENTLY RESULT IN SYSTEM PUMP FAILURE WHICH WILL THROW OFF THE AUXILIARY DRIVE BELT, RESULTING IN A LOSS OF ENGINE AUXILIARY FUNCTIONS (POWER STEERING ASSIST, WATER PUMP, ALTERNATOR, AND AIR CONDITIONING). IN EXTREME CIRCUMSTANCES, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE HYDRAULIC FLUID COULD IGNITE, RESULTING IN AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL NEW HYDRAULIC TUBING.
