The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.

It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.

For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.

In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-30
  • VIN: JTMAB3FV1PD
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Distracting connected services spam. When the car is turned on, the center console displays a "safe driver" warning, then after a number of seconds, a message instructing driver to sign up for connected services for navigation appears and won't display a default screen or last screen displayed until driver selects another display option. I was never on the navigation menu, nor do intend to ever use the navigation menu, and yet the solicitation appears. This is not only annoying, but distracts the driver from other information that the driver intends to see on the center console. If Toyota motor sales wants to not allow navigation except for subscriptions, it should be limited to when a driver presses the navigation button, but not distract the driver by spamming when the center console should be displaying whatever the driver has selected and forcing the driver to "cancel" by finding the button on the center console to what was originally displayed when the car was turned off or a default screen of user choice.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-18
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JTMAB3FV4PD
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Driver was parking the car in a parking lot at a very slow speed. The car suddenly shot forward at a very high rate of speed, requiring evasive steering from trees and a fence, until the car crashed head-on into another vehicle. The driver is very certain the brakes only were applied during the entire time the car shot forward. Airbags were not deployed. Bystanders were within six feet of the car at one point during the acceleration, prior to the crash. There were no injuries. Earlier, on the day of the crash, the car had a sudden, strong, yet brief acceleration of the vehicle during normal braking while approaching a rotary, unlike normal ABS. ABS itself seemed unneeded (the approach to the rotary was well within the speed limit, on dry condition roads). This issue occurred twice in the two months prior to the accident. There were no known warning messages in the car or the phone app for the car in any of these cases or at the time of the crash. The manufacturer has been notified of the crash, a product liability case has been opened, and an engineer was sent to look at the car. A data download from the airbag event data recorder (Bosch CDR) was done, a report was generated, and the report was provided to the car owner. No data in the formatted report is provided regarding Vehicle Speed, Accelerator Pedal, Cruise Control Status, Brake Torque, etc. Unformatted hexadecimal data is included in the report, without a data schema to decipher the data. It is not known if any other analysis or information about the car was reported by the engineer, beyond the Bosch CDR report. The owner is not aware that the problem has been reproduced or confirmed by anyone involved, or of any other inspections than the one described here. Manufacturer has not yet provided the owner with a report response. The car is currently at an auto repair shop and no repairs have begun. The shop is awaiting an appraisal by the insurance company before doing the repairs.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-05
  • VIN: JTMEB3FV4PD
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Sliding sun roof glass explosion while driving. Glass is clearly projected to the exterior of vehicle and not due to stone/rock hit. No overpass or vehicles in front of driver at the time. No other damage to vehicle. Serious injury could occur when glass falls into the passenger compartment of the vehicle cutting or blinding the driver. The Dealer/Certified Toyota service center replaced the glass under warranty after inspecting the broken sun roof glass.

Negative 2023 Toyota Rav4 prime car reviews

  1. Ken Considine 2024-09-29

The vehicle's ride quality leaves much to be desired. The stiff and crashy damping makes you feel every bump through your spine, while every dip, hump, and kink unsettles you in your seat. The steering also seems to jerk across the road instead of initiating a turn smoothly. Overall, it's not a pleasant experience for passengers. In comparison, my well-driven 2000s BMW far exceeds the ride quality of this vehicle.

I have tried both the 2022 and 2023 models, as well as several trim lines. Unfortunately, as someone who is 6'1'', I have found that the top of my legs rub against the steering wheel and the bottom of my thighs won't rest on the seat, no matter how far back I adjust it. This has resulted in cramped legs and hip pain on long trips. The driver legroom is only rated at 41'', which I find to be quite inadequate. As a result, I have decided to look for other options such as the Subaru Outback, which I have found to be a better fit for me.

Hi there! I just wanted to let you know that I was only provided with one key when I purchased my vehicle and unfortunately, when I requested to return it, I was refused. I'm feeling a bit frustrated about the situation, especially since I've been told that there are no more Toyotas available for me to purchase in my lifetime.

Hi there! I noticed that the spring lid on the female heater isn't sealing properly, which can cause snow to accumulate inside. I understand that it can be difficult to clean in cold temperatures. Just a heads up, using de-icer spray could potentially cause a fire if you plug in the male end. Stay safe!

I recently purchased the 2022 Rav4 prime and initially loved everything about it. Unfortunately, last week I encountered an issue with a check engine light. Upon taking it to the dealership, I discovered that some wires had been chewed off by mice. It turns out that the wires are soy-based, which is a material that mice are attracted to and tend to chew on. This has become a common problem and the repair cost is around $5000. While I am disappointed with this design flaw, I hope that Toyota will address this issue soon. In the meantime, I suggest considering other options before making a purchase. Thank you for your understanding.

Positive 2023 Toyota Rav4 prime car reviews

  1. Henri Berge 2025-06-13

I've owned a lot of Toyota cars, and I just bought my latest one a month ago from Longo for MSRP. It's incredibly quiet inside, and the only time I hear the engine is when it's cold. But once it warms up, even in HV mode, I have no idea the engine is running unless I look at the board. Inside the car, there are plenty of buttons to control everything without having to dig into hidden menus on the screen. I get great gas mileage, 46mpg on the freeway in heavy stop-and-go traffic. After driving for a month, I still have a couple of hundred miles to go. The car is very comfortable, unlike the Tesla Model Y I was comparing it to. The total range is 600 miles, but I will probably get more. The car drives great and takes corners like a sports car because of the low center of gravity. What I really like is that I can drive in HV while gas is relatively cheap at $4 per gallon, or plug it in and drive in EV mode if gas goes up again. I can easily drive 400 miles before stopping, unlike any EV which has to stop every 150 miles for a charge. What a waste of time! It only takes 2 minutes to fill up the tank. I didn't buy this car to save the environment because I think it's all [non-permissible content removed] invented by environmentalists to get paid. I bought it for the great range that will allow me to travel to remote places where there are no gas stations nearby.

I understand your frustration with having to pay for Toyota connect apps and dealer add-ons like nitro fill, paint protection, and interior protection that you didn't want. It can be frustrating to feel like you're paying for things you don't need. Is there anything else I can assist you with?

  3. Kelley Kuvalis 2025-05-01

My wife and I bought our new 2022 RAV 4 Prime model SE on March 7th this year. We've already put nearly 2200 miles on it and have only used 14 gallons of gas. This is my wife's car and her commute is usually between 32-36 miles round trip. She drives her commute on 100% electric and when she returns home, she usually has anywhere from 2-10 miles of electric range left, depending on weather conditions and if she makes any small trips out of her normal commute. We have a level 2 charger that takes 4.5 hours to fully charge from an empty battery. Now, when running just on the gas motor once the battery is depleted, the MPG is anywhere from 38 MPG to 40+ mpg. The other day, I drove 130 miles roundtrip down the coast of Oregon via Highway 101 from the Astoria/Seaside Oregon area. I used 49 miles of electric range and when the gas motor kicked in when the battery was depleted, I quickly reset the gauge to display MPG. When I returned home, the dash MPG displayed 49.5 MPG for those 80 miles or so. The speeds were between 25-55 MPH as Hwy 101 goes through several small towns. The weather was fair with temperatures in the mid 50's or so. There is no SUV Plugin All Wheel Drive vehicle that weighs close to 4,500 lbs that is as efficient as this one.

Finally found a 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime SE and I'm thrilled! It's the perfect combination of electric and gas power, with an average range of 44 miles on a full charge in warm weather for driving around town. Plus, the HV mode gas/electric system gives it a total range of approximately 600 miles on the highway. The only downsides are that it doesn't have a memory driver's seat and the base sound system isn't the best.

My wife and I got a new Rav4Prime in 2022 and we were lucky enough to qualify for the $7500 federal and $2500 state electric vehicle credit, which made it more affordable. Although the dealer charged an extra $5k over the sticker, which was disappointing, we still decided to take it since we had been waiting for 6 months. After the rebates, the net cost including tax, tag, and title was about $47000. The car looks great and has all the latest features, even though some of them are not necessary for us. For example, the panoramic sunroof is not something my wife uses and I personally think it's a safety hazard. However, the electric range is perfect for our needs. My wife charges it every 2-3 days and it's plenty for her daily commute, running errands, and shopping. We didn't need to install any special charging equipment and we charge it from a standard wall socket, which is very convenient. Our electricity bill only went up by about $30 per month, which is cheaper than the roughly $60/mo she used to spend on gas in her previous Hyundai Santa Fe. The car runs in electric mode about 85% of the time and we have only filled up the gas tank 5 times in the past 16 months, including the 3 fill-ups on our road trip. The acceleration in electric mode is amazing and it's addictive to feel that instant torque when it jumps away from standing. Although the car is supposed to be much quicker in hybrid mode, we haven't noticed a significant improvement, but it's still great for our weekend trips in the mountains. Also, when driving on steep sections of the highway in the mountains, the car struggles to maintain 75 mph. The engine revs at a high RPM and I can't get the CVT transmission to upshift even in manual mode. It can be annoying, but the car still manages to reach the summit. On the bright side, the car has many great features, such as heated and ventilated front seats that work exceptionally well. The adaptive cruise and lane-center assist are fantastic, and I particularly love the blind-spot monitors and rearview camera/rearview mirror. The digital dash looks fantastic, although it provides too much information for my liking. Phone pairing and the Apple Car connection are both great. This trim level has resolved the noisy cabin issue that plagues many of the lower trim RAV4s, making the car very quiet in most cases (except when going up steep hills at high speeds). The materials are nice, and the vinyl 'leather' on the seats is soft and looks great. The rain-sensing wipers work very well, and the seats are comfortable both in the front and back, with ample space in the back. The trunk has good space, even with the battery underneath. There are a few minor issues I found, such as the system that holds the brakes at stoplights needing to be reactivated every time the car is started up, which is a bit annoying. Additionally, the 360-degree surround view that shows all the cars and obstacles around you only works during parking and goes away after about 20 seconds. Since the technology is already installed, it would be great to use the feature while traveling. The touchscreen works fine, but the look is outdated and reminiscent of something from the 90s. Lastly, the headrest angles can't be adjusted, as they are fixed for safety reasons, but it's still a bit annoying. Overall, we love how the car runs on batteries most of the time, allowing us to go on road trips without long charging stops. For us, it's the perfect car right now.
