2022 Chevrolet Malibu problems
The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size car manufactured and marketed by Chevrolet from model years 1964–1983 and since 1997. The Malibu began as a trim-level of the Chevrolet Chevelle, becoming its own model line in 1978. Originally a rear-wheel drive intermediate, GM revived the Malibu nameplate as a front-wheel-drive car in 1997.
Named after the coastal community of Malibu, California, the Malibu was marketed primarily in North America, with the eighth generation introduced globally. It is currently the only sedan offered by Chevrolet in the U.S.
First generation (Chevelle Malibu, 1964)
The first Malibu was a top-line subseries of the mid-sized Chevrolet Chevelle from 1964 to 1972. Malibus were generally available in a full range of bodystyles including a four-door sedan, two-door Sport Coupe hardtop, convertible and two-seat station wagon. Interiors were more lavish than lesser Chevelle 300 and 300 Deluxe models thanks to patterned cloth and vinyl upholstery (all-vinyl in convertibles and station wagons), deep-twist carpeting, deluxe steering wheel and other items. The Malibu SS performance package was available only as a two-door Sport Coupe hardtop or convertible and added bucket seats, center console (with optional four-speed manual or Powerglide transmissions), engine gauges and special wheelcovers, and offered with any six-cylinder or V8 engine offered in other Chevelles - with the top option being a 300 hp (224 kW; 304 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) in 1964.
For 1965, Malibus and other Chevelles received new grilles and revised tail sections and had the exhaust pipes replaced but carried over the same basic styling and bodystyles from 1964. The Malibu and Malibu SS models continued as before with the SS featuring a blacked-out grille and special wheelcovers. Top engine option was now a 350 hp (261 kW; 355 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8. 201 of the 1965 Malibu SS cars got Regular Production Option (RPO) Z16, which include a heavily modified chassis and Chevy's new 375 horsepower 396 cubic inch V8. All were hardtops, although rumors persist that one convertible was built.
The Malibu SS was replaced in 1966 by a new Chevelle SS-396 series that included a big-block 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 engine (Canadian market did not receive the SS396 but marketed the former Malibu SS nameplate until January 1967 when it was phased out), heavy duty suspension and other performance equipment. Other SS-396 equipment was similar to Malibu Sport Coupes and convertibles including an all-vinyl bench seat. Bucket seats and console with floor shift were now optional on the SS and for 1966 with the SS now denoting a car with a big-block engine, the bucket seats became a new option on the regular Malibu Sport Coupe and convertible, upon which any six-cylinder or small-block V8 could be ordered. Also new for 1966 was the Chevelle Malibu four-door Sport Sedan hardtop. Styling revisions on all 1966 Chevelles including more rounded styling similar to the full-sized Chevrolets with sail panels and tunneled rear windows featured on two-door hardtop coupes.
For 1967, the same assortment of bodystyles were continued with styling changes similar to all other Chevelles including a new grille and revised tail section with taillights that wrapped around to the side. New this year was a Chevelle Malibu Concours station wagon with simulated woodgrain exterior side panel trim. Front disc brakes were a new option along with a stereo 8-track tape player. The same assortment of drivetrains carried over from 1966 with the top 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8 dropped from 350 to 325 hp (261 to 242 kW; 355 to 330 PS).

Common 2022 Chevrolet Malibu problems
The Chevrolet Malibu, while generally reliable, has had common issues across various model years. This analysis focuses on the 2022 Malibu, but it is worth mentioning that some issues persist from previous years.
Engine Problems:
The 2022 Malibu is equipped with a 1.5L turbo engine. While this engine is generally reliable, some owners have reported reduced engine power or the inability to start. This issue is tied to a fault in the engine control module (ECM) software, which disables the fuel injectors, preventing the vehicle from operating successfully.
Transmission Problems:
The 2022 Malibu's transmission system has been criticized for experiencing trouble around 100,000 miles. This is often manifested in the form of hefty jerking and difficulty changing gears. In some cases, the transmission may skip gears or even fail to start. These issues are related to faulty pressure control solenoids, broken transmission fluid pumps, or defective shift cables.
Electrical System Glitches:
The electrical system in the 2022 Malibu has had its fair share of issues. These problems include headlights that burn out prematurely, issues with the vehicle's wiring harness connector or headlight assembly, and problems with turn signals and hazard lights continuing to flash after they've been turned off. Additionally, newer Malibu models, including the 2022 model, have experienced issues with their electronic "Shift to Park" system, which can fail to recognize when the car is in park, preventing drivers from turning their cars off.
Conclusion:
While the 2022 Chevrolet Malibu has some common issues, it is essential to note that these problems are relatively uncommon and can be easily resolved with proper maintenance and care. The total cost of ownership for a Chevrolet Malibu over five years is relatively low compared to other cars in its class, making it a great investment for those in the market for a midsize sedan. Ultimately, if you're looking for a reliable car that delivers a great performance on the road, the Chevrolet Malibu is a great choice.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-14
- VIN: 1G1ZD5STXNF
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I noticed that as I was parking my 2022 Chevrolet Malibu and placed the vehicle's shifter in the park position, I was trapped in my vehicle because I keep getting an error message on my dashboard that reads "Shift to Park." even after the shifter was placed in park. This happened during one of the hottest days of the year. The vehicle failed to shift to the park position preventing people from leaving their vehicles out of fear that the vehicle may roll if not properly parked. Also, when this happens, I am unable to leave my vehicle unattended. I had to turn on and off the car several times until the problem resolved. this is an intermittent problem. GM has known about this problem for over 6 years now and they continue to manufacture these defective parts even after GM sent out Technical Service (TSBPIT5616A).
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-12
- VIN: 1G1ZG5ST8NF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: This vehicle is equipped with blue tooth which should allow me to drive hands free, focusing on the road and cars around me while GPS provides directions from my car speakers. Every day my phone looses connection to the blue tooth which stops GPS from going through my speakers which cause me to take my eyes off the road to see what the problem is. I have seen numerous websites which document this is an on going and huge issue with all GM vehicles. I live in a state in which distracted driving is enough of an offense to warrant police to pull you over. Manufacturers should not be allowed to push out vehicles that do not function as they are marketed that they do work when in reality this is a piece of shit that will cause accidents.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-10
- VIN: 1G1ZG5STXNF
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Chevy, and many GM vehicles love to illuminate the white “reverse” lights when parked. This is a fundamental departure from what it means when these *white* lights are illuminated, i.e., the car is in reverse and pedestrians and other vehicles should prepare for the vehicle to back up. However, with the above auto manufacturers, that rule is broken and now there are tens of thousands, or millions of vehicles on the road, and myriad parking lots/garages where these fundamental tenets for the expectation of a potential vehicle behavior has been broken. The notion that this is a “safety” feature to illuminate the area around the vehicle is inherently flawed. Other automobile manufacturers have seemed to fare just fine without this departure of what white lights mean on the back of a vehicle. When something has a long-standing specific meaning (i.e., I might go in reverse), and then that rule is changed, or augmented in ways that are non-uniform across automobile manufacturers, it renders the original intended purpose to be futile. At what point will somebody become severely injured and/or die because the white lights of a Chevy were ignored, and a car, did in fact, go in reverse. Going in reverse is now the exception when white lights illuminate on these cars, not the rule, and this is a terrible “feature” for alerting others about the intended behavior of the vehicle. The NHTSA should clarify the intended purpose of when white (reverse) rights are allowed to illuminate before the meaning of these lights becomes even more degraded.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-23
- VIN: 1G1ZD5ST3NF
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The car had multiple components fail, mostly electrical. But the main malfunction is the “Oil Pump” as stated by the dealership service team. Yes it is currently available for inspection upon request. The oil pump failure is the main concern since it is a key component to the vehicle’s engine and performance, this put my safety at risk since it caused several electrical malfunctions causing the car to decrease its engine power while driving on the highway, not only putting the drivers safety at risk but also those around, potentially causing a collision since engine could experience catastrophic failure due to this issue. The problem has been addressed and confirmed by a dealer and manufacturer, but it has not been solved and it has been well over a month now to which they have found no solution since the part was “discontinued.” There were not symptoms or warning signs before hand, except the car engine revving up at stops prior to the to the failure and check engine light coming on the day it was taken to service at the dealership.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-02
- VIN: 1G1ZD5ST1NF
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I placed the gearshift in park and I hat a warning to place the car in park. And it would not let me turn the engine off.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-10
- VIN: 1G1ZB5ST9NF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
- Summary: My safety restraint system keeps failing out and says it’s a seatbelt tensioner problem. Gm has repaired many times and still fails out.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-31
- VIN: 1G1ZB5ST1NF
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: When the vehicle is put into park and turned off, it will sometimes say the vehicle is not in park and to put the vehicle into park. I am unsire if it is a sensor failing or if the vehicle really is not truly in park, although the indicator on the dash shows P. This is a concern because if it is in fact not actually parked, the car can roll away when exiting.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-01
- VIN: 1G1ZD5ST3NF
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: When shifting into park, an error message shows as 'shift to park'. This isn't every time I shift into park, but when it does occur, I have to shift into reverse and then drive (possibly several times) before the transmission acknowledges the 'park' designation. I do not believe I can exit my vehicle safely as the transmission may allow the vehicle to disengage and move from the parking area causing damage to something or someone.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-16
- VIN: 1G1ZD5ST9NF
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: When trying to stop park and turn off my car it will display an error message saying shift to park. This first started about a week ago and I constantly have to turn the car on and off while I am trying to wiggle the shifter in an effort to get it to acknowledge that the car is parked so I can get out. This has also caused me to be stuck in the car for about 5 minutes on a good day to 20 minutes on a bad as I am unable to turn the car off. I am worried that when I leave the car it will roll away into traffic or stop at working in a busy intersection.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-04
- VIN: 1G1ZB5ST1NF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: My vehicle engine light came in around 20k miles. It would come on and go off at that time. When I went in for my oil change, I was told that it was an air filter issue and Chevrolet would fix it. That was not the case when I tried to have it fixed. I begin to experience the engine light coming on and staying to which I took it back to be looked at and was told that nothing was wrong other than I needed the oil changed. I took it back to the dealership after it started to wobble and shake as well as cut itself all the way off while driving. I had disabled the auto stop/start so that wasn’t an issue. The dealership ran a full diagnostic test and told me that I needed an oil change which I did and it might be a throttle issue but they wasn’t sure. The vehicle is now not only stopping while driving but it is making a ticking noise like an explosive. I’ve called GM and made a complaint and have yet to speak to anyone about this issue. The vehicle had electrical issues when I first got it and I had to have a jump start very early in my ownership of the vehicle
SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-15
- VIN: 1G1ZD5ST6NF
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: I have issues with my 2022 Malibu trying to accelerate while applying the brakes. I was in a parking lot looking for a parking space with the brake down (my foot nowhere near the accelerator), and the engine was revving to over 3000 rpms. I called the dealer today and the service department closed right before I called. I will be on the phone early Monday morning. This car is currently unsafe to drive
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-10
- VIN: 1G1ZB5ST0NF
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: My transmission is jerking and slipping. When accelerating the car acts like it doesn’t want to go. When I take ,my foot off the gas pedal the transmission jerks hard. The car has had the original transmission replaced by Beaver Chevy and now the new transmission is having the same issue. The car never had any check engine lights or any lights come on.
AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-09
- VIN: 1G1ZB5ST9NF
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
- Summary: Unknown safety restraint system failure that Chevrolet can not fix
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-25
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1G1ZG5STXNF
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: While my daughter was attempting to exit a parking lot, she put the car in drive pressed accelerator pedal and there was no response from car. Pressed accelerator again and car took off and hit a 13 inch curb causing major front end damage to vehicle. An initial diagnostic scan revealed a transmission fault code of P0826 Shift up and down failure. Vehicle is now body shop waiting for Chevrolet dealer to take car in for further diagnostics before repairs can be done.

This is definitely a car built for a rental fleet. It had space inside, reasonable MPG, and a decent trunk. However, there are some areas that could be improved. The acceleration could be better and the suspension could use some work. Additionally, there were some rattles and the sound deadening could be improved. Overall, there may be other mid-size sedans that are more refined, but this car still has some good features.
Gerhard West 2024-09-17
Out of the mid-sized sedans that are available for less than $40K, this one is unfortunately not the best. I had the chance to rent it for a week, and despite it having fewer than 18,000 miles on it, it was already showing signs of wear and tear (paint chips, uneven door gaps, carpet pulling away from door sills, rubber jams pulling out). It could just be that rentals are often mistreated, but that still doesn't make up for the weak performance from an engine (1.5 liter) that's fitted to an otherwise larger car. It's not the most responsive car when you hit the gas, which can be frustrating, especially if you have a family of 4 in the car. The seats are also not the most comfortable, with thin padding on a hard base. Overall, it's not the best mid-sized sedan out there, but if you can't afford or find something better (like a Charger, Accord, Camry, Passat, K5, Sonata, Altima, Maxima, Avalon, 6, or Legacy), a Malibu is still better than walking (provided it still runs given Chevy's spotty track record for reliability).
Bobbie Pfeffer 2024-09-05
It seems like my car is not functioning properly as it keeps showing the 'reduce engine power' warning. This issue is not just limited to my car, but my friends who also own a Malibu have faced the same problem. It's frustrating to have the same problem occur three times within just four months and 15000 km, and even the mechanics seem to be unsure about how to fix it.
Dwight Greenfelder 2024-07-15
The driver will find the car comfortable and easy to handle. Although there is a bit more engine noise than the competition, the interior has improved dramatically from older models. However, the proximity keyfob can be annoying as you are forced to get it out to look at it in order to press the right part of the rubber monobutton on the control face. Additionally, the fob has lock and unlock buttons next to each other on a single surface, with no way to tell which button you're pushing by feel. The trunk unlatch button on the fob is also balky. The buttons on the steering wheel are made in a cheap rubberized monobutton style.

This car may not be the best in terms of quality when compared to Ford, Toyota, Honda and Subaru. However, spending an extra $1K to $2K on a car from these brands may be worth it and make you happier. I wish I had considered this before purchasing my current car. Now, I am looking to trade it in for another car.
