2009 Toyota Venza problems

toyota logo

The Toyota Venza is a five-passenger mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Toyota primarily for the North American market, beginning with its introduction in 2008 and now in its second generation — with a hiatus for model years 2018–2019.

The first-generation Venza was based on the XV40 series Camry platform and marketed between 2008 and 2017 — and shared the platform with the AL10 series Lexus RX. The second-generation model is a rebadged Japanese-market XU80 series Harrier and has been sold since September 2020.

The name "Venza" is a mix of "Venture" and "Monza."

Common 2009 Toyota Venza problems

The 2009 Toyota Venza has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. Here are the details of these issues:

  • Interior Accessories: The interior accessories of the 2009 Toyota Venza, such as the sunroof, moonroof, and other broken interior components, are the biggest faults with the inside of the car. These issues can affect the overall driving experience and the comfort of the vehicle.
  • Steering Problems: Some customers reported rattling during steering, while others said the car drifted and whined as they turned. These steering problems can make driving the Venza difficult and potentially dangerous.
  • Brake Faults: In earlier models, the brakes wore out far before the average lifespan. Others reported needing to pump their brakes to stop. This can be a serious safety issue and should be addressed promptly.
  • Windshield Cracking and Visibility Problems: Many Venza owners have reported issues with windshield cracking, which can be caused by impact damage, extreme temperature changes, or low-quality glass. This can affect visibility and the overall safety of the vehicle.
  • Transmission Issues: Transmission problems are common, especially in the first-gen Venza made between 2008 and 2015. Reported issues include delayed shifting, grinding during acceleration, unstable ride quality, weird noises, a burning smell coming from the engine bay, and outright failure. These issues can affect the performance and reliability of the vehicle.
  • Engine Troubles: Engine problems include excessive oil consumption, engine stalling and misfires, and loss of motive. These issues might be due to defective sensors, dirty air filters and worn-out spark plugs. Inadequate engine maintenance is a major cause of these problems.
  • Faulty A/C System: Issues include diminished airflow, hot air blowing from the vents, and unsettling odors coming from the vents. These problems can be due to overcharged or low refrigerant, clogged cabin air filters, dirty condenser or evaporator coils, compressor malfunction, and an underperforming blower motor.
  • Seat Heater Issues: Some drivers report a burning, plastic smell coming from the seats. One driver reports the odor being bad enough that it made them cough, despite the lack of visible smoke.
  • Service Brake Failure: There are a few reports of service brake failure. Rate of incidence is very low, but the issue is potentially quite severe, with one driver reporting that their car was totaled after an accident resulting from the service brakes failing to engage.
  • Timing Cover Leaking: One of the most common issues with the 2009 Toyota Venza is the timing cover leaking. This issue is expensive to fix due to its location, and it is a common problem with the V6 engine in this vehicle.
  • Power Back Door Issues: The power back door is common to have issues which is also expensive. This can affect the convenience and functionality of the vehicle.
  • Road Noise: Some owners have reported excessive road noise in the cab, which can affect the comfort and enjoyment of driving the vehicle.

Regular maintenance and servicing can help avoid many of these issues. Toyota has also issued recalls related to some of these problems.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-06
  • VIN: 4T3ZK11A49U
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Dear NHTSA, I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to bring to your attention a matter of significant concern regarding water leakage in my vehicle, which I believe has the potential to compromise the safety and functionality of the car's electronic systems. I would like to submit this report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to address and rectify this issue promptly. During the rainy season, I have observed water leaks occurring on both sides of the front section of my vehicle. This water infiltration has raised serious concerns about the possibility of damage to the car's computer system, thereby posing a potential risk of car malfunction. The electronic components of modern vehicles, including vital control units and sensors, are susceptible to water damage. In the event of such damage, there is a heightened risk of malfunctions that could compromise the overall safety and performance of the vehicle. Furthermore, I have identified an additional water leakage issue through the panoramic roof at the backside of the car. This raises the likelihood of water seeping into the interior of the vehicle, potentially damaging interior components, electrical wiring, and compromising the structural integrity of the car. I am reaching out to the NHTSA with the intention of highlighting the severity of these issues and advocating for a comprehensive investigation into the water leakage concerns in my vehicle model. I believe that swift action is necessary to prevent any potential safety hazards that may arise from compromised electronic systems or structural damage due to water infiltration. In light of the safety implications associated with water damage to the vehicle's electronic components, I urge the NHTSA to initiate a thorough examination of this matter. Your prompt attention to this matter is crucial in ensuring the safety of drivers and passengers who may be affected by similar issues.

  • Summary: THIS IS THE THIRD OCCURRENCE IN A YEAR. THE VEHICLE WILL RANDOMLY TURN ON AND ATTEMPT TO START. THERE IS NO FUEL GOING TO THE ENGINE, SO IT DOES NOT IGNITE, BUT I HAVE READ REPORTS IF VENZAS DOING THIS AND CATCHING FIRE. THE OTHER CHALLENGE IS THAT WHEN THIS HAPPENS, IT ALSO ACTIVATES THE ENGINE IMMOBILIZER AND WILL NOT RECOGNIZE THE KEYS. THE FIRST TIME, LAST JANUARY, WE RETURNED FROM A TRIP TO FIND A DEAD BATTERY. AFTER REPLACING THE BATTERY, THE ENGINE WAS LOCKED. I EVENTUALLY WAS ABLE TO GET IT STARTED, THEN LEFT BOTH KEYS IN THE VEHICLE INBTHE ACC ON POSITION FOR 30 MINUTES, AND IT RECOGNIZED THE KEY. IN OCTOBER, I WAS OUT RUNNING AND RETURNED TO FIND THE HEADLIGHTS ON AND THE FAN BLOWER RUNNING. I DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY, BECAUSE IT WOULD NOT RECOGNIZE THE KEYS. I RECONNECTED IT LATER WITH NO CHANGE, BIT THEN A FEW HOURS LATER IT WORKED FINE. TODAY, DECEMBER 1, 2019), WE RETURNED HOME FROM CHURCH TO FIND THE STARTER CLICKING. THE ENGINE IMMOBILIZER IS ACTIVATED. THE VEHICLE WAS LOCKED AND UNTAMPERED. IF THE BATTERY DOES NOT DOE, THIS COULD START A FIRE AND BURN DOWN MY HOUSE. I AM TAKING IT TO A DEALER, BUT THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD. IT OCCURS WHILE PARKED, RANDOMLY. THOUGH IT SEEMS COLD WEATHER IS A FACTOR.

Negative 2009 Toyota Venza car reviews

  1. Durward Bogisich 2024-11-07

I purchased this car used with 90,000 miles on it. It was in great condition and drove really well. It had a lot of power, but there was a bit of torque steer when accelerating and it wasn't great in the rain. Unfortunately, after less than 7,000 miles, the car broke down on the highway due to a damaged alternator. The repair cost $900, which was quite expensive. I also had to replace the front passenger wheel bearing and tie rod, which is a common issue with this model, costing $780. Additionally, I had to replace all the brakes and rotors, which were shaking when stopping, even though they only had 15,000 miles on them. On a trip, the front driver's strut burst and leaked oil all over the brakes, causing the rotor to harden and shake again. The rear struts are also bad, but I decided to skip that repair for now. The leather seats are not in great condition, and the armrests and center console are falling apart. The heater and transmission are making some noise, and the stereo has no bass and low volume. It's disappointing that this was the first newer car I had bought in 20 years and the most expensive one, but I still appreciate the good reviews and minimal complaints about this model compared to other manufacturers.

After only a couple of days the brakes started to squeak. The dealer replaced the brakes today so we'll see. The interior is very nice and well laid out (certainly one of Toyota's better looks). The exterior... boring, unoriginal but not bad. Rides a little rougher than it should. Not been able to get avg MPG past 19.3 but working on it. Climate control works well and I love the push to start button. Overall power is not bad and the brakes are very responsive. The rear door seems to be very picky as to when it wants to open for you but that is probably just a learning curve. No USB???? Annoying oversite! Bluetooth streaming works well but often needs resetting. Cruise buttons hard to find, see.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the 6cy AWD that I purchased for long drives along the Great Lakes Snowbelt in winter. Despite the dangerous conditions, this car has been a reliable and reasonable compromise for me. The seat is firm, yet surprisingly comfortable even on a 500 mile drive. The vehicle handles firmly and assertively, which sets it apart from Toyota's other models. At first, I thought it felt large, but it's actually more like a tall sedan than anything else. I have a black one with a toothy chrome grill, which seems to be a desirable feature on higher-end vehicles. It goes like a tank in the snow and can haul a medium amount of stuff. I'm confident that it will have good resale value and I always feel safe driving it. Thank you for letting me share my thoughts with you!

I have a positive overall impression of the vehicle, however, I must say that Toyota's noise reduction efforts have been subpar. Despite having taken it to the shop seven times for excessive wind noise, the issue has yet to be resolved by Toyota.

Hello! I noticed that you have a unique reason for purchasing this car - as a weekend musician, you needed something that could carry a lot of equipment. I completely understand your aversion to mini-vans and SUVs, and it sounds like this car has been a great fit for your needs. While you initially found the handling to be heavy, it's great to hear that you've become more comfortable with it and that it drives well even when fully loaded. The stereo, Bluetooth, and navigation all seem to be working well for you, and it's good to know that the car is comfortable too. It's always great when a car grows on you the more you drive it! Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

Positive 2009 Toyota Venza car reviews

Congratulations on your recent purchase! It's great to hear that you and your wife are enjoying your Certified used Toyota Venza 2009. The spacious back seat sounds perfect for your 3-month-old, and it's wonderful that you have plenty of room at 6 foot 2 inches tall. The ride is sound and the stability control and all-wheel drive make for a secure drive. Although the 4 cylinder is a bit loud when you step on the gas, the six-disc CD player, SAT radio, and MP3 player make up for it. Overall, it sounds like a fantastic vehicle for families who want to avoid the dreaded mini-van. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

I saw the Venza at an airshow and it immediately caught my attention. I opted for the 4 cyl model due to its cost and fuel efficiency. Although I was hoping for better than 21 mpg, I understand that it may decrease when driving more aggressively. While I do notice the transmission disengaging during engine idle, I appreciate the quick starts. The engine does take a moment to wind up when accelerating or passing, but the steering is very responsive. Although it may float a little when driving straight, I find it easy to handle. The suspension is firm, which allows me to feel the bumps and waves in the road. Unfortunately, I did discover small circular scratch marks on the roof shortly after leaving the dealership, but I am confident that it will be properly fixed soon.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the Venza. I recently traded in my Nissan Xterra and Toyota Camry Hybrid through Cash for Clunkers. I chose the Venza because it's similar to the Camry, which made it easy for me to get used to the Navigation system. The seats are really comfortable and the Navigation system has a great voice-controlled update from the Camry. I absolutely love the 20

I really enjoyed driving the Venza! When rating it, I compared it to other similar vehicles and it definitely stood out. Not only is it comfortable for the driver, but it's also very spacious and comfortable for passengers. My wife and I even took it on a 2,000 mile round trip from Central TX to Phoenix and were impressed with the 26 MPG we got on the highway while cruising at 80 MPH for long stretches. The Venza is also great for day-to-day use, easily handling small to mid-size items like groceries or small furniture. I was pleasantly surprised by its acceleration and it feels very sturdy during cornering. The electronics, including the navigation and stereo, are top-notch. The ride is smooth and quiet, with minimal cabin noise up to about 65 MPH. Overall, I highly recommend the Venza!

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your car more and more every day! It sounds like you've owned quite a few cars over the years, but this one really stands out as the best all-around vehicle you've ever had. It's great to hear that it handles and accelerates like a sports car, but can still haul your motorcycle trailer and other items with ease. Even without the Nav and leather package, it seems like this car was designed just for you. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!
