1996 Dodge Stratus problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Stratus is a mid-size car that was introduced by Dodge in December 1994 and was based on the 4-door sedan Chrysler JA platform. The Stratus, Plymouth Breeze, and Chrysler Cirrus were all on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best list for 1996 and 1997. It received critical acclaim at launch, but ratings fell over time. An updated version of the Stratus was introduced for 2001, with the Cirrus being renamed as the Chrysler Sebring, and a coupé model was also added to the range. Production ended in early 2006 at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant after building 1,308,123 Stratus and Sebrings since 2000.

The Dodge Avenger replaced the Stratus nameplate in early 2007 for the 2008 model year.

After the discontinuation of the Stratus sedan in 2006, the assembly line and tooling were sold to the Russian concern, GAZ, which manufactured 9,000 units of a very slightly modified Stratus from 2008 through 2010 called the Volga Siber.

So reliable car!

After 20 years being manufactured, my car works great, the big issue is with the front end. At least 2 times a year, for the last 5 years I had to repair it. Parts are difficult to find and original or replacement parts, last the same time. I used it every day and its nice to drive.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-10-13
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: ONE OF THE OIL GALLEY PLUGS ON THE 2.4L ENGINE OF OUR DAUGHTER'S 1996 DODGE STRATUS CAME OUT, AND THE CAR SPEWED MOST OF ITS OIL OUT INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. CHRYSLER HAD A RECALL (#671) ON THESE BACK IN 1995 AS SEVERAL FIRES OCCURRED. OUR VIN FELL WITHIN THE RANGE OF VINS AFFECTED, BUT WE WERE TOLD IT WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. THE RECALL ENDED WITH CARS MANUFACTURED OCT. 13, 1995 AND OUR CAR (WE WERE TOLD) WAS MANUFACTURED OCT. 14TH. THE FIX AS OF THAT DATE WAS A CHANGE TO THE CYLINDER HEAD MACHINING AND THE PLUG THICKNESS. OBVIOUSLY, EITHER OUR ENGINE IS ONE FROM BEFORE THE CHANGE WAS FULLY IMPLEMENTED, OR THE CHANGE WAS NOT A CURE ALL, AS THE PLUG ON OURS CAME OUT. THEIR SOLUTION FOR AFFECTED ENGINES WAS A BRACKET THAT BOLTS ON TO RETAIN THE PLUGS, BUT NO ONE AT THE 1-800 NUMBER NOR AT THE DEALERSHIP COULD TELL ME IF IT WOULD FIT OR WORK ON OUR ENGINE WITH THE SUPPOSED MACHINING CHANGES. PARTS AND LABOR WILL LIKELY BE ONLY AROUND $100, BUT THEY WILL NOT COVER THE REPAIR EVEN WITH THE PROXIMITY OF RECALL DATE TO OUR MANUFACTURE DATE, THE FACT THAT OUR CAR HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AS CARS THAT WERE RECALLED, AND THIS BEING A SAFETY ISSUE. HOPE THEY ARE 100% CORRECT THAT OUR CAR SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, SEEMS LIKE A RISK ON THEIR PART TO NOT COVER THIS. *NM

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-11-05
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1B3EJ46XXTN
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I OWN A 96 DODGE STRATUS, I PURCHASED IT YEAR OF 97. I RECEIVED NUMEROUS RECALLS ON THIS VECHICLE SINCE THE DAY OF PURCHASED. I FOLLOWED UP ON EACH RECALL THAT I RECEIVED. AS TIME WENT ON I HAD NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE. OVER THE YEARS I AWAYS BELIEVE IN CHRYSLER PRODUCTS TO BE SAFE AND SOUND.I FEEL THAT IT'S BEEN TRULY UNFAIR TOO LOYAL CONSUMERS SUCH AS MYSELF MANY OTHERS. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY A COMPANY SUCH AS CHRYSLER AND ENGINEERS WOULD ENGINEERED A PRODUCT LIKE THE DODGE STRATUS WITH SO MANY DEFECTS. ON SATURDAY NOVEMBER 5, 2005 I WENT TO PAY A BILL ABOUT FIVE TO TEN MILES AWAY FROM HOME. RETURN HOME, PARK THE CAR, LOCK THE DOORS WENT INTO MY APARTMENT. ABOUT TEN MINUTES LATER A NEIGHBORHOOD BOY KNOCK ON MY DOOR AND SAID YOUR GOLD CAR IS ON FIRE. I RAN OUTSIDE TO SEE, YES IT WAS MY CAR ON FIRE! FIRE WAS COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. I CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, THEY ARRIVE ABOUT TEN MINUTES LATER TO PUT THE FIRE OUT. THE FIREMAN HAD TO BREAK THE HOOD LATCH TO GET INTO THE ENGINE AREA TO PUT OUT THE FIRE. THE FIRE DESTROY MY MOTOR AND HOOD. THANK GOD MYSELF OR MY KIDS WASN'T IN THE CAR! I'M TRULY SADDEN THAT THIS HAVE TO HAPPEN TO ME AND MY FAMILY I'M SINGLE PARENT WITH NO TRANSPORTATION. AFTER THE INVESTIGATION OF THE CAUSE OF FIRE IT WAS DETERMINE THAT THE OIL GALLERY PLUG WAS FAULTY. MY INSURANCE COVERAGE WOULDN'T COVERAGE IT. *NM

AIR BAGS DEPLOYED, PULLED CAR UP A CURB INTO A FIRE HYDRANT THEN ANOTHER 25 FEET INTO A POLE. CAR IS A TOTAL LOSS. THE FRONT END PARTS ARE ALL IN TACT, ONLY THE LOWER CONTROL ARM IS CRACKED WHICH CAUSED THE WHEEL TO TURN COMPLETELY TO THE RIGHT. EVERYTHING WAS INSPECTED ON VEHICLE AND THERE IS NOT ANY OTHER EXPLANATION OR EVIDENCE PRIOR TO THE CURB THAN THE LOWER CONTROL ARM. THE CAR LOST CONTROL CAUSING FURTHER DAMAGE. *NM

THE TRAILING ARM LINK WAS "FLOATING" AT THE FRAME END. IT SERVES TO PROVIDE STABILITY FOR THE ENTIRE REAR SUSPENSION. I REPLACED THE BRACKETS ON BOTH SIDES (LEFT AND RIGHT) AS THE OTHER SIDE WAS ALSO NEAR FAILURE. THE REST OF THE FRAME AND UNDERCARRIAGE ARE NEARLY RUST FREE. THE FAILED AND NEARLY FAILED PARTS ARE AVAILABLE. *NM

  • Manufacturer: QUALIS AUTOMOTIVE LLC
  • Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT
  • Summary: QUALIS AUTOMOTIVE IS RECALLING CERTAIN AFTERMARKET BALL JOINTS SOLD FOR USE ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE SOCKET MAY HAVE BEEN EXCESSIVELY HARDENED WHICH COULD CAUSE IT TO CRACK NEAR THE RETAINING RING GROOVE ALLOWING THE BALL STUD TO SEPARATE UNDER IMPACT LOAD. THE SUBJECT BALL JOINTS WERE SOLD AS FOUR PART NUMBERS, D10945, D10946, G10945, AND G10946. THE AFFECTED CONTROL ARMS, D10945 AND D10946, ARE STAMPED WITH THE FOLLOWING DATES ON THE BALL JOINTS: 134308, 135708, 100109, 102709, 104109, 105509, 107609, 108909, 110309, 113209, AND 116609. THE G10945 AND G10946 ARE THE SAME PART AS THE D10945 AND D10946 RESPECTIVELY. THEY ARE LABELED DIFFERENTLY DEPENDING ON THE AFTERMARKET CUSTOMER.
  • Consequence: SEPARATION OF THE BALL STUD FROM THE SOCKET OF THE BALL JOINT HOUSING WOULD ALLOW THE CONTROL ARM TO COLLAPSE AND THE WHEEL TO FOLD IN CAUSING LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A CRASH.
  • Remedy: QUALIS AUTOMOTIVE WILL REPLACE THE BALL JOINTS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 9, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT QUALIS AUTOMOTIVE AT 1-800-493-4128.

I just bought this car a few days ago, and it's been great! I absolutely love manual cars, and this one is perfect for my needs. I drove it 45 miles on the highway, and the gas gauge didn't even move. The mileage is amazing and perfect for anyone who has to drive long distances often!

Stratus is a great-looking car with superb road manners. There's plenty of room for people and the trunk is huge. Visibility forward is incredible. However, some issues such as head gasket, electrical, brake, and transmission problems may have caused some concerns. I always wondered if it would start when I needed it to. Despite these issues, it's still a great car to drive!

I purchased this car brand new back in 1996 and have been driving it for the past four years. Prior to my ownership, my mother took great care of it and drove it very gently, never exceeding 3000 RPM. However, I have put the 2.4L engine through a lot of tests and trials, pushing it to its limits. Despite my aggressive driving style, I do make sure to give it regular oil changes. As a result, my average peak RPM when accelerating is around 4500. While I do experience poor gas mileage due to my driving habits, I believe it is reasonable given my style. Over the years, we have had to replace the head gasket, transmission twice, and perform several brake jobs. Nevertheless, considering my driving style, I think it has held up well. Currently, it has just over 150,000 miles and is still going strong.

I bought this car with 44,000 miles on it in January 2000. I loved this little car, but unfortunately, it has required quite a bit of maintenance. In the summer of '01, I had to replace the A/C parts, which cost $635.00. Since then, I have had to replace about 4 relay switches, which cost $50 each. In December 2002, when the car had 92,000 miles on it, the water pump went out, which cost $600.00 to fix. In June 2003, I had to replace the alternator and battery, which cost $675.00. Additionally, I had to spend $300 on a tune-up. This car has become quite expensive to maintain, and unfortunately, it is too expensive for me to keep. It now needs a fuel pump, and I am not sure what that will cost. As a result, it is sitting in my driveway waiting to be gotten rid of. I am scared to drive it because it seems to cost me about $600 every time I've touched it in the last couple of years.

I purchased this car back in '98 with only 24,000 miles on it. It has been fairly reliable, although we have had to replace the steering rack three times. Unfortunately, each time we replace the rack, we also need to replace the steering pump and Ti-rods. The car now has around 120,000 miles on it and we just installed the third steering rack in February. Recently, it has started making a funny noise that may be related to the struts or the steering. We are keeping an eye on it and hoping that nothing major happens. Overall, it has been a good car.

I've had my car for almost six years now. It's been very responsive and reliable throughout the years. Although it has been extremely tight under the hood at times, I've been able to do most of the work on it myself. I absolutely love my car and I would recommend it to anyone who will listen!

  2. Beau Bailey 2024-09-12

I bought this car a year ago and so far I haven't had any problems. I mainly use it for city driving, about 8,000 miles per year, and it's currently at 77,000 miles. While it's not the smoothest ride due to its 14-inch tires, it gets the job done. Unfortunately, the door pins wore out, causing some annoying rattling noises. On the bright side, the car is great on gas, getting about 24 miles per gallon in the city. The air conditioner is very cold and the heater blows with force. Additionally, the seats are very comfortable. The car has OK power for a 4-cylinder engine. I plan to provide an update in a year's time.

  3. Grady Schowalter 2024-09-06

This car has been pretty good for me so far. I bought it with 107,000 miles and it now has 113,000. I have had no major problems with it except for normal age/mileage related issues such as tires and brakes.

  4. Jerel Wiza 2024-07-20

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with this car. I've had it for a year now and it has been absolutely trouble-free! I bought it as the second owner with 65,000 miles on it, and it now has 78,000 miles. The paint quality is amazing, with no rust spots at all. It still has the original battery after 7 years, which is impressive. The car looks beautiful both inside and outside. The first owner only did regular maintenance, and had a new A/C unit and steering pump installed. I'm happy to report that I haven't had any head gasket or transmission problems at all! The only minor issues I've noticed are a door that rattles when I hit a bump, and some not-so-great smelling tires. Overall, I'm really pleased with this car and would definitely recommend it to others!

Overall, I think the car is really good. I love the look and the interior space is fantastic!
