jeep logo

The Jeep Liberty is a four door unibody compact SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep for model years 2002–2012 over two generations, internally designated the KJ (2002-2007) and KK (2008-2012), respectively. Both generations were marketed globally, including as the Jeep Cherokee outside North America.

Introduced as a replacement for the Cherokee (XJ), the Liberty was priced between the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee and was the smallest of the 4-door Jeep SUVs until the car based 4-door Compass and Patriot arrived for 2007. Both generations were assembled at the Toledo North Assembly Plant in the United States and other countries including Egypt and Venezuela. The KK generation was manufactured alongside the closely related Dodge Nitro. Production ended in August 2012.

The Liberty was superseded by the Jeep Cherokee.

  • Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2012 Jeep Liberty and 2012-2013 Chrysler 200 and Dodge Avenger vehicles. A component within the occupant restraint controller (ORC) may fail and prevent the active headrests from deploying in the event of a rear-end crash.

  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ORC as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on December 4, 2017. Owners may contact FCA customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA's number for this recall is T56.

Negative 2012 Jeep Liberty car reviews

  1. Arne Mayert 2024-09-20

Within 1.5 years and at 50k miles, I experienced a series of issues with my car. Unfortunately, I had to replace several parts such as the serpentine belt, water pump, AC condenser, radiator, control arm, leaking transfer case, leaking engine oil pan, clutch fan, and AC fan. I also had to get two sets of brand new tires in just 5 years of ownership due to alignment issues. Despite these issues, I did appreciate the car's interior, including the leatherette seats and GPS system. However, I ultimately decided to sell the car before the extended warranty expired. While I did experience some issues, I still believe that the car had potential. It's important to note that a minor/moderate front end collision with a mailbox occurred before I bought the vehicle, which may have contributed to some of the problems. Overall, I had a mixed experience with the car, but I'm grateful for the extended warranty that covered over 10k in repairs.

  2. Tyrese Kuhlman 2024-09-14

Sorry to hear that you've had multiple issues with your car and it's not great on gas. It doesn't sound like a good fit for a daily driver. Thank you for sharing your experience.

  3. Maximo Hoppe 2024-09-10

I really like everything about my Liberty! It gets 22mpg on the highway and 14mpg in the city. Plus, it only has 92k miles on it.

  4. Jaeden Barton 2024-09-09

The car's height is great and the backspace trunk is very convenient. However, the acceleration could be improved. Unfortunately, the sunroof has started leaking and it seems to be a bigger issue even after cleaning and draining the water.

  5. Jose VonRueden 2024-06-11

I have experienced a number of issues with this car, including the need to replace all 4 tires, 2 batteries, a fuel pump repair, and now the water pump, coolant leak, and fan belt. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in my ability to address these issues and keep the car running smoothly. While I acknowledge that some may prefer other car brands, I believe that with proper maintenance and care, this car can continue to serve me well. Thank you for your consideration.

Positive 2012 Jeep Liberty car reviews

  1. Percy Leuschke 2025-01-05

We purchased our Jeep 7 years ago and it has been incredibly reliable, no matter the conditions. Aside from routine maintenance and proper care, we have not had to do anything else to it. For us, it has been a comfortable and dependable vehicle. We are actually considering purchasing a second one because this one has been so good to us. As for the mileage, we don't mind sacrificing a little gas mileage for the ruggedness and reliability that comes with owning a Jeep. After all, they are legendary for a reason. As the saying goes, 'There's only one'. That pretty much sums it up.

  2. Jaleel Emard 2025-01-02

It's great to hear that you've had no problems with your vehicle since you bought it new! It's also really impressive that it's cheaper than a wrangler and can go just about anywhere off-road. While the interior may not be the most luxurious, it's good to know that it wears well over time.

  3. Joseph McKenzie 2025-01-02

This car is recommended for smaller individuals, as it may not provide enough comfort for men taller than 5'9. However, I find it perfect for me. While my husband doesn't find it very comfortable for long distances, I think it's a fun and snappy little car to drive. It looks great and we haven't had any repair bills so far. Although it doesn't offer much room, the interior design is fantastic and it would be a cute and perfect vehicle for short trips or 4-wheeling. Overall, I think it's a great car, especially for young female drivers.

  4. Aurelio Spinka 2024-09-17

You'll be pleased to know that it handles the road very well!

  5. Savion Ledner 2024-08-18

After spending over a year researching and testing vehicles, we finally decided on the Liberty. We were looking for a vehicle that could go off-road on some fairly tough trails, tow a camping trailer, and still be used as a comfortable daily driver. The Liberty does all three very well. We've had it for a month now and find it to be very comfortable to drive, quiet on the highway, maneuverable, great in the snow, and perfectly reliable. The Limited has a nice leather interior and other nice features like power seats, Bluetooth, etc. We strongly considered the Xterra, FJ Cruiser, Wrangler, and 4-Runner, but found them to be either too big, too expensive, or not daily driver friendly.
