2001 Jeep Liberty problems

jeep logo

The Jeep Liberty is a four door unibody compact SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep for model years 2002–2012 over two generations, internally designated the KJ (2002-2007) and KK (2008-2012), respectively. Both generations were marketed globally, including as the Jeep Cherokee outside North America.

Introduced as a replacement for the Cherokee (XJ), the Liberty was priced between the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee and was the smallest of the 4-door Jeep SUVs until the car based 4-door Compass and Patriot arrived for 2007. Both generations were assembled at the Toledo North Assembly Plant in the United States and other countries including Egypt and Venezuela. The KK generation was manufactured alongside the closely related Dodge Nitro. Production ended in August 2012.

The Liberty was superseded by the Jeep Cherokee.

Common 2001 Jeep Liberty problems

The Jeep Liberty, introduced in 2002, has faced various common problems across its model years. These issues range from engine misfires to faulty electrical components and window regulators.

Engine misfires are a common problem for both generations of the Liberty, with drivers reporting cases of engine knock, rough idling, and excessive vibration. This issue can be caused by worn-out spark plugs, faulty ignition coils, or damaged fuel injectors. Regular maintenance and timely replacement of these components can help prevent engine misfires.

Late-model Chrysler vehicles, including the Jeep Liberty, are equipped with a totally integrated power module (TIPM), which is a distribution box for the vehicle's entire electrical system. Faulty TIPMs have been a leading cause of drivability problems for Jeep Liberty owners, especially in the 2011 and 2012 models. Issues include gauges dropping to zero, all warning lights illuminating, and inability to start the vehicle. These problems can also be caused by other faulty electrical components, such as the wireless control module (WCM) and body control module (BCM).

A bad window regulator is the most common problem reported by drivers of the 2006 and 2007 Jeep Liberty models. The faulty part makes clicking noises when rolling down the windows and can get caught in the door latch, preventing the door from opening. The most common fix for this issue is replacing the part, which can cost between $100 and $200 plus labor costs, depending on the type and configuration of the window regulator.

The 2005 Jeep Liberty has had problems due to a bad fuel filler neck, causing the gas tank to overflow. Drivers have experienced gas splattering on the vehicle's exterior due to the tank filling up before the pump has shut off.

Additionally, the 2006 Jeep Liberty has the most overall complaints, with the worst category being windows/windshield problems. The most-reported problem is the window regulator breaking, with an average cost to fix of $300 and an average mileage of 59,000 mi.

In summary, the Jeep Liberty has faced several common problems, including engine misfires, faulty electrical components, window regulator failures, and fuel tank issues. Regular maintenance and timely replacement of parts can help prevent or address these problems.

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-11-17
  • VIN: 1J4GL38K05W
  • Components: TRAILER HITCHES,EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY
  • Summary: I'M FILING A COMPLAINT AS I HAVE RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE N46/NHTSA 13V-252 BUT CANNOT GET MY CAR SERVICED. MY JEEP DEALERSHIP IN TOWN SAYS THEY CAN'T SERVICE THIS RECALL NOTICE IN A TIMELY FASHION AS THEY CAN'T GET THE PARTS FROM CHRYSLER. I HAVE A FACTORY INSTALLED - BY JEEP -TRAILER HITCH. THE HITCH HAS NEVER BEEN USED TO TOW ANYTHING. "I CAN BE PUT ON A WAITING LIST AND IT MAY TAKE UP TO A YEAR." NICE CUSTOMER SERVICE. IT WOULD PROBABLY TAKE 5 MINUTES TO DETERMINE THEY NEED TO DO NOTHING! I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER JEEP FROM THIS DEALERSHIP AND I'M DUE FOR A NEW ONE! I THOUGHT YOU SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS. IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT OF A CRASH, EXPLOSION, AND MY DEATH, MY FAMILY PROBABLY HAS A GOOD CAUSE FOR A SERIOUS LAWSUIT. *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-08-25
  • VIN: 1J4GL48K92W
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: WE PURCHASED OUR JEEP IN 2008 AND THE AIR BAG LIGHT WAS ON. SOME TIMES IT COMES ON IMMEDIATELY AFTER STARTING THE VEHICLE, SOMETIMES AFTER DRIVING FOR AWHILE, SOMETIMES NOT AT ALL, LIKE THERE IS A BAD CONNECTION SOMEWHERE. THE CAR LOT SAID THERE WAS A RECALL AND WE NEEDED TO TAKE IT IN FOR THE FREE REPAIR. W WENT TO OUR LOCAL JEEP DEALER, THEY SAID THE RECALL HAD BEEN DONE, AND WHEN THE ADVISER POPPED THE HOOD TO SHOW ME WHAT WAS DONE, HE NOTICED THE WIRE LOOM WAS NOT ON THE WIRE LIKE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE. SO HE PUT ONE ON IT. SO AS FAR AS WE KNEW THE ORIGINAL DEALERSHIP THAT SUPPOSEDLY PERFORMED THE REPAIR DID NOT ACTUALLY DO IT AND JUST SAID THEY DID. SO AROUND 7 YEARS WITH NO REPAIR FOR A POSSIBLE WIRE RASH. IN 2012 WE GOT NOTICE THAT ANOTHER AIR BAG RECALL NEEDED TO BE DONE, WHICH TOOK ABOUT A YEAR FOR THEM TO GET PARTS FOR. A DEALER DID THE REPAIR AND CLEARED THE AIR BAG CODE. I ASKED THE DEALER WHAT THE AIR BAG CODE WAS AND WAS TOLD THEY DIDN'T READ IT JUST CLEARED IT. I ASKED WHY THE AIR BAG LIGHT WAS STILL ON AND THEY SAID THEY COULD DIAGNOSE IT FOR $120 AN HOUR. I CONTACTED CHRYSLER ON THIS AND THEY SAID THEY CONTACTED THE DEALER WHO DID THE REPAIR AND THE DEALER TOLD THEM THE AIRBAG LIGHT IS NOT RELATED TO THE RECALL THEY DID. IF THEY DID NOT READ THE CODE, HOW DO THEY KNOW? [XXX] AT CHRYSLER SAYS THAT IF YOU BUY A USED VEHICLE THEN YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIRS NOT CHRYSLER. 6 OTHER JEEPS WHICH HAVE HAD BOTH REPAIRS HAVE HAD THEIR AIRBAGS DEPLOY. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT NEITHER OF THE FIRST TWO FIXES HAVE CORRECTED THE PROBLEM AND JEEPS HAVE MULTIPLE AIR BAG PROBLEMS WHERE THE ENTIRE SYSTEMS NEED TO BE GONE THROUGH AND EACH JEEP MIGHT HAVE DIFFERENT THINGS WRONG. IT IS TIME FOR A THIRD AND FINAL RECALL WHERE EACH JEEP NEEDS TO BE DIAGNOSED THEN REPAIRED INSTEAD OF CHRYSLERS ONE SIZE FITS ALL SOLUTION. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR
