2002 Jeep Liberty problems

jeep logo

The Jeep Liberty is a four door unibody compact SUV manufactured and marketed by Jeep for model years 2002–2012 over two generations, internally designated the KJ (2002-2007) and KK (2008-2012), respectively. Both generations were marketed globally, including as the Jeep Cherokee outside North America.

Introduced as a replacement for the Cherokee (XJ), the Liberty was priced between the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee and was the smallest of the 4-door Jeep SUVs until the car based 4-door Compass and Patriot arrived for 2007. Both generations were assembled at the Toledo North Assembly Plant in the United States and other countries including Egypt and Venezuela. The KK generation was manufactured alongside the closely related Dodge Nitro. Production ended in August 2012.

The Liberty was superseded by the Jeep Cherokee.

Common 2002 Jeep Liberty problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Jeep Liberty 2002, several common problems have been identified:

  • Faulty Window Regulator: A prevalent issue in the 2006 and 2007 models, the window regulator would make clicking noises, get caught in the door latch, and prevent the window from operating correctly. Replacing the window regulator was the common fix for this problem.
  • Fuel Leaks: Owners experienced fluid leaks caused by worn differential pinion seals or transfer cases in 2002-2012 Jeep Libertys. This issue could lead to fuel leaks, posing a safety hazard and requiring repairs.
  • Airbag and Safety Recalls: The 2002 model faced safety concerns related to airbag systems, seat belts, and overall safety ratings. Issues included random airbag light activation, non-deployment during collisions, and fuel leaks leading to fires. Crash test scores were below average, especially in the rear of the vehicle.
  • Defective Ball Joints: The 2002 and 2003 models were known for defective ball joints, causing reliability issues. Premature window failure was also a common problem in the 2003 model, despite improvements over the 2002 version.
  • Power Door Locks: Some owners had to replace the door lock actuator in the Jeep Liberty due to misbehavior. The root cause, whether a manufacturing problem or not, was not definitively established.
  • Fluid Leaks: Jeep Libertys from 2002 to 2012 were prone to fluid leaks when the transfer case or differential pinion seal became worn. This issue required attention to prevent further damage to the vehicle.

These problems highlight the challenges faced by owners of the Jeep Liberty 2002 model, ranging from electrical issues to safety concerns and mechanical failures. Addressing these issues promptly is crucial to ensure the longevity and safety of the vehicle.

  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: At approximately 6:30 am 9/25/2024, I was transporting a friend to her home in a neighboring city. After ten minutes of travel, I exited a four lane bridge. As I slowed and set up for traffic negotiations, We heard a bang, like maybe tire blowout, I initiated a full stop to safety, disembarked vehicle to find that; THE RIGHT FRONT BALL JOINT HAD EXPERIENCED A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE! Thus, the tire was sliced the tire mount rim was deeply grooved. Had vehicle towed to my home. It is in the condition left by the towing company. So, I called my neighborhood dodge boys and wàs assured that "they were not obligated not interested in repairing this near calamity, for the "RECALLED LOWER BALL JOINT COMPONENTS WERE DEALT WITH IN 2006.. TOO MANY YEARS HAVE PASSED FOR THIS EVENT TO BE REPAIRED BY RECALL OR WARRANTY". OK THEN, HOW ABOUT THE AIRBAG OPEN RECALL AT THE STEERING WHEEL.. REPLY, NO. NOTHING MISSED OR ELIGIBLE. Well, that's it.. Thanks for the venting space. And seriously, thank you for what you do.

2002 Jeep Liberty recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 14 recalls for different components of the 2002 Jeep Liberty.

2015-01-28
  • Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
  • Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2002-2003 Jeep Liberty vehicles manufactured January 9, 2001, to March 28, 2003, 2002-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 13, 2001, to May 23 2003, and 2003-2004 Dodge Viper vehicles manufactured November 1, 2001, to June 30, 2004. Due to electrical noise beyond the tolerance of the air bag electronic control module (ECM), a component in the ECM may fail, causing the front air bags, side air bags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated.
  • Consequence: Inadvertent deployment of the air bags may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Chrysler dealers will replace the air bag control module and side impact sensors as required, free of charge. This recall remedy was applied during earlier recall campaigns of these vehicles under safety recalls 12V527 and 13V040. All owners that have not had the recall repair performed under safety recalls 12V527 or 13V040 are strongly encouraged to have it performed and not wait for the final remedy to be deployed to the field. The recall began on December 29, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is R06.
2013-06-19
  • Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
  • Summary: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 1993-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2002-2007 Jeep Liberty vehicles. The fuel tanks in these vehicles are at risk of failure and leakage in certain rear impacts.
  • Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may result in a fire.
  • Remedy: Owners may take their vehicles to dealers and the dealers will perform a free inspection of the rear structure. On vehicles in the recall that are not equipped with a tow hitch, Chrysler will install a Chrysler designed tow hitch free of charge, provided the condition of the vehicle can support proper installation. On vehicles in the recall that are equipped with an aftermarket tow hitch, Chrysler will assess whether the hitch and surrounding areas show evidence of sharp edges or other puncture risks. If so, Chrysler will replace the tow hitch with a Chrysler designed tow hitch free of charge, provided the condition of the vehicle can support proper installation. On vehicles already equipped with a Chrysler designed tow hitch, Chrysler will inspect the area around the tow hitch installation, and if any installation issues are identified, they will be repaired free of charge. The recall began on August 1, 2014. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign numbers are N45 (for the Grand Cherokee vehicles) and N46 (for the Liberty vehicles).
2012-11-08
  • Manufacturer: CHRYSLER GROUP LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Chrysler is recalling certain model year 2002 and 2003 Jeep Liberty vehicles manufactured January 9, 2001, through March 28, 2003, and 2002 through 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 13, 2001, through May 23, 2003. A component in the air bag control module may fail causing the front airbags, side curtain airbags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated.
  • Consequence: Inadvertent deployment of the airbags may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will install a supplemental jumper harness to the airbag control module, free of charge. Owners were notified of the recall by interim letter in January 2013. The remedy for affected Liberty vehicles is expected to be available in April 2013. The remedy for affected Grand Cherokee vehicles is expected to be available later in the year. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753.
2012-10-22
  • Manufacturer: TIMKEN CORPORATION
  • Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:HUB
  • Summary: Timken is recalling certain non-formed, front wheel hubs, part number HA599467, which were sold to retail and automotive distributors in the automobile aftermarket as front wheel hub replacements designed only for use on certain 2002 through 2005, 4X4, non-ABS, Jeep Liberty vehicles. These front wheel hub units can be mistakenly sold to owners and installed on 4X2 versions of the Jeep vehicles.
  • Consequence: If the non-formed hub unit is installed on a Jeep Liberty 4x2 model (which does not use an axle nut for hub retention), the vehicle wheel will not be secure and a front wheel separation may occur, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Timken has notified retail stores that have received the subject parts. The front wheel hubs will be replaced free of charge. Owners who may have purchased the affected units should contact Timken at 1-330-471-3693 for more information. This recall is being conducted by Timken, not Chrysler/Jeep.

Negative 2002 Jeep Liberty car reviews

I strongly advise against purchasing a Chrysler product. In my experience, the engine failed after only 102,000 miles, and the cost of repair was quoted at $3,500 for a junkyard engine with 50k miles on it. However, I was able to find a used engine with only 400 miles on it and had it installed by my brother, who is a service tech, for a final cost of $1,200. Despite this, I still do not recommend this vehicle as the gas mileage is poor for a six cylinder, with only 17 mpg on the highway. I have decided to sell it immediately to avoid any further issues. In the future, I will be purchasing imports exclusively.

I have a BMW with performance tires, so I needed a vehicle to drive in the winter. However, I purchased this car with about 85k miles on the odometer. I must say, I love my Jeep and drive it more than the BMW. I really appreciate the driving position, looks and maneuverability of this car. I have had very few service complaints and it is still very tight and rattle free despite having so many miles. If this one ever starts giving me trouble, I would definitely consider buying another Liberty like this one with fewer miles. Overall, it's a great value for a used vehicle.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I recently purchased a pre-owned 2002 Jeep Liberty from a lovely older lady. Overall, it's been a great car with no major issues, but I have been having some trouble with the engine light staying on. I've tried replacing the fuel cap three times, but unfortunately that hasn't solved the problem. I even took it to the dealer, but they couldn't find anything wrong either and suggested replacing the fuel cap again. I'm still having the same issue even after buying a new cap from them. Additionally, I've noticed that the car seems to be using more gas lately and it doesn't handle well on wet roads. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving it and I'm happy with my purchase so far.

After reading many rave reviews, we decided to purchase a Liberty. However, after just 4 months, we traded it in for a Grand Cherokee. Although the repairs were covered under warranty, we had to take it into the dealer repair shop 8 times for various issues, including the replacement of the rear end suspension and control arm. Dealing with these issues was quite a hassle. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend the Liberty to anyone. It's best to save your money.

My sister gave me this truck after my Ford Escape was totaled in an accident. It had around 207,000 miles on it and was in pretty good condition. However, after driving it for about 2,000 miles, I noticed that the engine was making some strange noises. I wasn't sure what was wrong, so I took it to a friend who knows a lot about cars. He told me that the engine was knocking, which means that it's on its way out. Unfortunately, it's going to be quite expensive to replace the engine, and I've already sold my Escape, so I'm in a bit of a tough spot. It would have been much cheaper to repair my Escape.

I bought my Liberty in 2007 and it has been the best car I have ever owned. When I bought the Jeep it had 100K on it but I was on a limited budget and purchased an extended warranty. I have not had a single problem with this car! I have put over 40k on my Jeep and it is still more reliable than any car I've ever owned. I wouldn't hesitate to drive this car anywhere I had to go on the spur of the moment. And if you're worried about how many miles a Liberty can get on it, let me put your mind at ease - I am at 143k and still going strong!!!

We are so happy that we traded our 2001 Toyota RAV4 for a 2002 Liberty Limited 4wd. The RAV was a great vehicle, but it felt too much like a car. The Liberty, on the other hand, is very truck-like and solid, with a nice torquey motor. It's not only solid, but also fun to drive. The pricing is very reasonable, the quality is very good overall, the styling is awesome, the towing capacity is class-leading, and its off-road capabilities are hard to beat. This is the perfect small SUV that gives you the most bang for your buck. We are thrilled that we got one.

  3. Fredy Connelly 2024-09-09

My Liberty was purchased with 77000 miles on it and I am about 200 miles short of 100000 and it's still running as well as it was the day I bought it. It has plenty of power and as a college student, I have plenty of cargo room to take stuff back and forth. It goes great in the snow/ice and in the mud! I love my Liberty so much!

  4. Diamond Heathcote 2024-08-29

I really enjoyed my '98 Wrangler, but after only a month, I decided to switch to the Liberty and I couldn't be happier. It's fast, smooth, and powerful, and everything works perfectly. It's great off-road and it was priced even lower than the Wrangler! I even added skid plates underneath and have taken it to the highest points of Montana, including granite boulder fields. The mileage is exactly what the window sticker said, but that's okay. Overall, it's a solid, responsive, and sporty vehicle that has a lot to offer for both couples and families. Thank you for getting everything right!

  5. Jacques Kessler 2024-08-26

I love my Liberty! It's such a great SUV with good looks inside and out, a strong engine, a solid feel, and the perfect size. Compared to other vehicles in its class, it's by far the best. I haven't had any mechanical problems to date. Despite its weight of 4000 (which gives it a solid feel), it handles and performs well when needed. It's great for short trips to the mall (easy parking) or long camping trips fully loaded up.
