Honda Civic 2004 problems
The Honda Civic (Japanese: ホンダ・シビック, Hepburn: Honda Shibikku) is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972. As of 2023, the Civic is positioned between the Honda Fit/City and Honda Accord in Honda's global car line-up.
The first-generation Civic was introduced in July 1972 as a two-door fastback sedan, followed by a three-door hatchback that September. With a 1,169 cc transverse engine and front-wheel drive like the British Mini, the car provided good interior space despite overall small dimensions. Initially gaining a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly, later iterations have become known for performance and sportiness, especially the Civic Type R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR/Si.
The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle (later to become the Orthia) and the CR-V (which, by extension, was used as the basis for the Honda FR-V).
The Civic is one of the all-time best-selling automobiles in the world, with over 27 million units sold since 1972 as of 2021.

Common Honda Civic 2004 problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 2004 Honda Civic, several common problems have been identified:
- Transmission Failure: Another prevalent issue with the 2004 Honda Civic is related to transmission problems. Early warning signs of transmission failure include shaking and loss of power while driving. Once these signs manifest, it is often recommended to start considering a new vehicle due to the potential costs of repairs.
- Recalls: The 2004 Civic has a relatively high number of recalls for a car of its age, with a total of 15 recalls reported. While this may raise some concerns, it is worth noting that the car is generally considered low-maintenance compared to others in its price range.
- Road Noise: Despite its overall positive reputation, some owners have reported loud road noise as a drawback of the 2004 Civic. While this may not be a critical issue in terms of safety or performance, it is a notable point to consider for those sensitive to noise levels while driving.
- Anti-Lock Brakes: One criticism highlighted by Edmunds is the absence of anti-lock brakes in the DX and LX trims of the 2004 Civic. This omission was noted as a downside, especially considering that higher trim levels were relatively more expensive upon release.
These common problems with the 2004 Honda Civic highlight areas where owners may encounter issues or concerns. It is essential for potential buyers or current owners to be aware of these issues to make informed decisions regarding maintenance, repairs, and overall vehicle satisfaction.

- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: On Thursday the 2nd of December 2021 at 8:50 AM, I was driving by myself on the freeway heading to work and the hood popped up and smashed my entire windshield. I was unable to see and luckily managed to pull over to the left hand side of the road without hitting anything or anyone. I could have easily been hit by another car traveling at 70-80 miles per hour. Although glass shards hit me, I did not receive any personal injury. Stauffer Towing towed the vehicle to Caliber Collision. The windshield was replaced on Friday December 3rd by Caliber Collision in Salt Lake City. Caliber Collision also inspected the hood and related components. The hood will require replacement because the hinges were so badly damaged and I had to remove the hood so that this won't happen again. The hood latch had released and I later noticed that the metal supporting the latch is also having issues. The latch has been giving problems with opening and closing properly at times.

GOING UP A HILL MY TRANSMISSION WASN'T WORKING ANYMORE AND WAS REVVING WITHOUT GOING INTO GEAR. I WAS IN MOTION ON A HILL ON A VERY TIGHT ROAD WHERE ONLY 1 CAR CAN PASS AT A TIME. AND CARS WERE PARKED ON THE SIDE OF THE STREET. I ALMOST CRASHED INTO THE PARKED CARS BECAUSE I COULD'T CONTROL THE JERKING OF THE CAR AND THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPING. I HAD CARS COMING TOWARDS ME AND HAD THE CAR STALLED ON THE ROAD AND HAD TO BLOCK THE TRAFFIC FOR 30 MIN BEFORE MY FRIENDS COULD COME AND HELP ME MOVE THE CAR. THERE WAS LITTLE AMOUNT OF SPACE AND PARKING AND HAD TO PUSH THE CAR FOR A WHILE BEFORE FINDING A PARKING SPOT. THE CAR HAS ONLY 123,000 MILES, THE TRANSMISSION FLUID IS FRESH AND CLEAN AND NEVER HAD ANY TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. WITHIN 15 MIN THE WHOLE TRANSMISSION BLEW UP! I REALLY HOPE HONDA CAN TAKE CARE OF THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE I SEE THAT THERE ARE MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS ABOUT HONDA'S TRANSMISSION FAILING IN THESE HONDA CIVICS BETWEEN 2000 AND 2004.

I AM SEEING THRU GOOGLE SEARCHES THAT THIS SEEMS TO BE AN ONGOING PROBLEM AFTER THE AIRBAG IS REPLACED. AS THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND SEEMS TO BE AN ONGOING HONDA PROBLEM I AM THINKING THEY SHOULD RECTIFY PROBLEM OR INSTALL ORIGINAL AIRBAG BACK TO FIX. AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1HGES26704L
- Components: AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE
- Summary: TAKATA RECALL DURING A JANUARY SNOWFALL AND FREEZE, I WAS TRAVELING IN THE MIDDLE LANE OF THE HIGHWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 50-60 MILES PER HOUR, WITH THE SPEED OF TRAFFIC. A CAR APPROXIMATELY 7-8 CAR LENGTHS AHEAD OF ME BEGAN TO BREAK AND I DID TOO. I WAS BREAKING WHEN MY CAR BEGAN TO FISHTAIL AND I WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE CAR FOR 2-3 SECONDS BEFORE HITTING A PATCH OF ICE AND SPINNING INTO THE HIGHWAY CONCRETE MEDIAN. MY CAR DID NOT HIT ANY OTHER VEHICLES BEFORE HITTING THE MEDIAN ON THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT AND HOOD. I ESTIMATE THAT I WAS TRAVELING OVER 40 MILES AN HOUR. THE CAR THEN SPUN AROUND AND HIT THE BACK DRIVERS SIDE AND THEN SPUN AGAIN TO FACING FORWARD. MY CONCERN IS THAT THE AIRBAGS, WHICH WERE REPLACED IN THE TAKATA RECALL A FEW YEARS AGO DID NOT GO OFF. THE CAR WAS CONSIDERED TOTALED AND WAS DONATED.

- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on July 1, 2015. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are JU4, JU5, JU6, and JU7. Note: Vehicles that have already received a replacement passenger air bag inflator as part of the recall remedy for an earlier campaign such as 14V353 or 14V700 (Honda recall numbers S95, JH6, JH7, JH8, JH9, JJ0, JJ1, JJ2, JJ6, JM5 and JM6) are not included in this recall. However, this recall does supersede 13V132 and 14V349. Note: On December 18, 2015 Honda informed NHTSA of an expansion of this recall to include certain model year 2004 Honda CR-V vehicles in addition to additional model year 2003 CR-V vehicles.

Great auto for 100 mile r/t to work. It's comfortable even for a 6'2, 230 lb guy. You'll be happy to know that there have been no repairs needed as of 35,000 miles, except for regular service. While it handles well in wet conditions, it may not be the best choice for snowy weather.

This car has everything you could want. Although it lacks rear doors, the folding back seats more than make up for it. You can easily fit skis and snowboards in there. While the mileage may be less than advertised, you can still expect to get about 24/34 city/highway, even when redlining it after every red light and toll booth. The car has a unique personality, almost like a playful puppy that just wants to run. The shifter is easy to reach and the suspension is not too rough, making it a joy to hug corners. You can easily fit three people in the back, and the front bucket racing seats are amazing. I have driven VW's, Mercedes, Ford, and Acuras, but no other car has the same sporty feel as this one.

This is my 3rd Honda and I must say, it's the best one yet! The speed is impressive, the seats are comfortable, and the shifter is just perfect. I've driven it for 2000 miles so far and I'm getting an impressive 33 mpg per tank. The braking is also amazing, which is great because I tend to drive it a bit fast!
-
I traded in my SUV for this car because gas was really expensive. The MPG is amazing in this car, getting between 35-40 on the highway!

It's great to hear that you're happy with your base-model Honda Civic! It's refreshing to see someone who values reliability and practicality over superficial features. The Civic has proven to be a reliable and cost-effective option for many drivers, and it's wonderful to hear that it has brought contentment and peace to your heart. Keep enjoying the ride!

This is my first car. I chose a Honda Civic because of its brand power. However, I have noticed that it can be quite noisy when accelerating, which can be a bit annoying. Additionally, it may not have as much power as some of its competitors, such as the Hyundai Elantra or Toyota Corolla. Furthermore, the gas mileage is not as good as advertised, especially in the city where it only gets around 25mpg. Overall, I still enjoy driving my Civic and appreciate its reliability.

I purchased this car with the intention of using it as a reliable mode of transportation for my daily commute between LA and San Francisco. However, I have been disappointed with its performance. Despite having only 300 miles when I bought it, the car now has nearly 92,000 miles on it, with 85% of those miles being on the highway. Unfortunately, I have experienced several issues with the car, including the steering knuckles coming out at 5k, a radiator leak at 15k, and rear brake failure at 25k. Although the transmission failed just before the warranty expired at 34,650 miles, I have had to replace the axles twice and the brakes once since the warranty expired. Additionally, the stereo has malfunctioned twice, which led me to replace it with a new one. While the gas mileage is good, the overall reliability and build quality of the Honda product has been disappointing.

I really enjoy driving this car on trips, but I do wish I had opted for a 5-speed transmission. Living in an area with 8% grade mountains, it can be challenging to navigate the roads during the winter. Most economy cars, even those with automatic transmissions, have a 1st gear option that allows for manual control of the car. Unfortunately, this car does not have that feature, and the lack of ABS brakes can make driving on mountain roads quite nerve-wracking. While I do love this car, I think it's time for me to consider something with a 1st gear option. I even tried using 2nd gear on dry straight-aways, but it didn't work as expected and the car picked up speed. Overall, I still enjoy driving this car, but I think it's time for an upgrade.

The vehicle has experienced several issues since leaving the dealer, including hard starting, vapor lock problems, erratic idle control motor, malfunctioning power window controls, squeaky brakes, lower than advertised gas mileage, and water leakage through the seals in the rear windshield after heavy rains. Despite these challenges, I am confident in my ability to address and resolve these issues with the necessary expertise and resources.

I owned this car in 4-door LX 4 speed auto guise for nearly four years. Although the car handled well and could take an off ramp at 60 mph with ease, I must admit that I don't quite understand the Honda hype that led me to purchase this vehicle. The car felt underpowered for daily commuter driving around the Chicagoland area, and I often felt that Civics couldn't manage to get out of their own way. Perhaps the auto trans muted power? Overall, the car had an anemic and fragile feel to me.
