1993 Chevrolet Lumina problems
The Chevrolet Lumina is a mid-size car that was produced and marketed by the Chevrolet division of General Motors from 1989 until 2001.
Background
The first generation of the Lumina replaced the Chevrolet Celebrity and Chevrolet Monte Carlo under a single nameplate; the mechanically unrelated Chevrolet Lumina APV minivan served as the successor for the Celebrity station wagon. The model line was based on the front-wheel-drive GM10 platform (later designated the GM W platform), shared with Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac. For 1995, the second-generation Lumina was introduced, serving as a substantial exterior revision of the previous generation (the two-door coupe was renamed the Monte Carlo). For the 2000 model year, the Lumina was replaced by the Chevrolet Impala; the model line would retain the W platform through the 2016 model year.
Throughout its production, both generations of the Lumina were produced by General Motors Canada at Oshawa Car Assembly (Oshawa, Ontario). For markets outside of North America, the Chevrolet Lumina was derived from other large GM sedans. From 1998 to 2013, the Lumina was marketed in the Middle East and South Africa as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Holden Commodore produced in Australia. From 2005 to 2006, GM Philippines sold the Lumina as a Chevrolet-badged version of the Buick Regal (sharing much of its body with its American counterpart).

Based on the complaints from owners of the Chevrolet Lumina 1993, here are some common problems associated with this car:
- Electrical Malfunctions: Complaints include instances where the car's parking lights come on without the keys in the ignition, followed by a complete loss of power when trying to start the car. This could be related to wiring issues, alternator problems, or electrical shorts.
- Transmission Sensor Problems: Some owners have mentioned issues related to the transmission sensor, leading to the car shutting down when put in drive. Replacing the brain of the car or the ECM has been suggested as a resolution for this issue.
These problems highlight common issues faced by owners of the Chevrolet Lumina 1993, ranging from power loss and starting difficulties to electrical malfunctions and transmission sensor problems. Addressing these issues promptly and with the appropriate repairs can help maintain the car's performance and reliability.
Is a Chevy Lumina a good car?
With a competent car and a pricing structure that undercuts Ford and Chrysler, Chevy's Lumina offers a fine blend of function, value and performance. This is one GM product that was done right the first time, just like the new Malibu, which should be investigated closely by buyers interested in the Lumina.
How long can a Chevy Lumina last?
Most of the 1995's and up that I know of have well over 200,000 miles on and still very strong. I had 278,000 on mine when I sold it. It still ran perfect and everything still worked on the car. The only issue that I had was an intake gasket at 200,000.
Why did Chevy discontinue the Lumina?
In North America Chevrolet discontinued the Lumina in 2000 due to dwindling sales and the success of the reborn Impala. The Lumina nameplate was still used in some markets, in parts of Asia it was applied to the mid-sized Buick Century/Regal and a badge engineered version of the Holden Commodore sports sedan.

This car has been with my fire chief since it was brand new. I'm a volunteer firefighter, and once I turned 14 (I'm 18 now), he sold it to me for $750 with 145k miles. I absolutely love it and take great care of it. I expect it to last another 100k miles at least! While the gas mileage and interior could be better, it's an incredibly reliable car that handles, looks, and drives great. Plus, it's one-of-a-kind with its white exterior, tinted windows, and flames (even if they're not the best flames - it was only a $300 job!).
-
Hi there! I'm happy to hear that your Lumina has been a reliable car for you. It's great to know that you've had no major issues with it, and that it's been getting good gas mileage. It sounds like you take good care of it with regular maintenance, which is always a good idea. I can understand why you wouldn't want to trade it in or sell it. It's always hard to say goodbye to a car that has served you well. I agree that beverage holders would be a nice addition, but overall it sounds like you really love your Lumina!
-
The Chevy Lumina was one of the best cars I've ever owned. I loved it so much that I purchased three of them: a 1990 sedan, a 1990 Euro 3.1, and a 1994 Z34 cpe. They never broke down and had no issues whatsoever, making them incredibly reliable. I especially loved the exhaust note, as today's cars are too quiet. Additionally, there was plenty of room inside (I'm 6ft), a good-sized trunk, great design, and a spirited driving experience.
-
I remember the first time I saw a Z34 back in '96 when I was looking for a used car. I thought it was the coolest car ever! I couldn't wait to get one. Luckily, I found one that had only 20,000 miles on it and was in great shape for a three-year-old car. I took it for a ride and that was it - I knew it was mine forever!
-
Great car! It's really fun to drive. If you're mechanically inclined, you'll save a lot on labor fees, which can be a pain. It's important to keep up with preventative maintenance.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it last August and it's been great until recently when the rear brakes started to grind horribly. I got those replaced, and then the fuel pump went out just today. Despite these issues, I still see a lot of these cars on the road and I think mine will be around for years to come. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. I've had some trouble with it lately, including having to replace the alternator four times, as well as the fuel pump and brakes. On top of that, the gas mileage isn't great, and I've been struggling to keep it above 15mpg. If you're looking for a reliable car that won't break the bank, I would recommend considering a Ford. They're a great value and can save you money in the long run. Thanks for listening!
Julian Hoeger 2024-06-09
My car unfortunately experienced some major issues at around 75K miles, including transmission slipping and warped heads, which ultimately led to the car freezing. However, overall it was a reliable car and I did not experience any other major issues except for the brakes, which had to be entirely replaced 4 times. The rotor design was poor and I even managed to break the rotor from the spindle, which is a rare occurrence.
Tommie Hamill 2024-05-05
When I bought mine it only had 15k miles. I love the ride , styling and interior comfort and quality. The doors weigh a ton so don't get anything caught when closing them. We had it about a year and enjoyed several trips and I swear that it seemed like the faster I went the better it hugged the road. Now for the bad things....don't get in a situtation where you need to make a 3 point turn like ordinary cars because it will take 5 points. Be VERY careful when accelerating hard at slow speeds because you will get into problems as it has alot of torque steer and it's easy to over compensate. The car was bone stock and around the 20k mile mark the alternator went out. Fortunately I had a friend at a Chevy dealer who took it in and replaced the alt even tho it was out of warranty. Six months later it went out again. Lucky me that Chevy had a warranty policy that said if any part failed within a year that they installed it would be covered. Well it happened 2 more times and each time it was covered. The alternator sits down behind the engine in front of the passenger feet so it doesn't get enough air. The engine has to be dropped out the bottom for access.....what a job!! I talked Chevy into getting a special aftermarket alternator with built in better cooling capabilities. That one went out too. I remembered Pontiac had gas boiling problems on one of their TransAms and made a blower kit to blow air on the carb. Believe it our not a dealer here had one of the last ones in the U.S. so I got it and installed it. I mounted the fan and ran a snorkel to blow on the alternator. I'll be danged if that one failed too. Back to Chevy for the last time then I sold it. Each time the electrical system was checked with no problems. If I had bought it new I would have had a good Lemon Law case. I have never heard if anyone else had this same problem....probably not. I miss my Z but not the frustration.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with the car I bought back in 07/02. It's a really spacious car and I get about 23 mpg, which is great. However, I did notice that the air conditioner and heat aren't very powerful. Also, the brakes could be a bit better and it takes a bit longer to stop the car. But overall, I think it's a pretty good car considering that it's used. Thanks for listening!
