The Mini (stylised as MINI) supermini range, marketed under various names such as Mini Cooper, Mini Hatch, Mini Hardtop, Mini One, and Mini John Cooper Works, are a family of retro-styled three-door hatchback, two-door convertible, and five-door hatchback (since 2014). The range was introduced in July 2001, following the acquisition of the Mini brand by German automaker BMW.

BMW first unveiled the Mini hatch concept car at the 1997 Frankfurt International Motor Show, when the Mini brand was still part of the BMW-owned Rover Group. Developed as a successor to the original Mini, the styling of the concept car was well received by the public and further developed. The new Mini range was launched by BMW in 2001, one year after their sale of the Rover Group in March 2000, and the classic Mini's discontinuation that same year. Under BMW ownership, the brand later grew its line-up by adding larger models such as the Clubman in 2007, the Countryman in 2010, the Paceman in 2012, and the Aceman in 2024.

The second generation was launched in 2006 and the third, adding a longer 4/5-door hatchback, in 2014. A two-door convertible version was added in 2004, followed by its second generation in 2008. With the launch of the fourth generation in 2024, the Mini Hatch has been renamed to Mini Cooper.

BMW also developed several battery electric versions of the Mini, starting with the Mini E in 2009 developed only for field trials, followed by the mass-produced Mini Electric in 2019, and succeeded by the Mini Cooper E/SE in 2023 which uses a dedicated electric vehicle platform.

Mini models under BMW ownership are produced in Cowley, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom at Plant Oxford. Between July 2014 and February 2024, 3-door production was shared with VDL Nedcar in Born, Netherlands. The Mini convertible was only assembled in the Netherlands between 2015 and 2024. From 2024, all next generation combustion engined Mini hatch and convertible production will be centred at Oxford. Since late 2023, the electric Mini Cooper is developed and produced in China at the Spotlight Automotive joint venture facility in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu.

Common 2012 Mini Cooper s convertible problems

The Mini Cooper S Convertible 2012 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the issues in detail:

  • Clutch issues: Concerns about the clutch have been raised, with some owners reporting expensive repairs.
  • Roof operation: The folding roof mechanism can be problematic, with potential costs for a new canvas top or folding mechanism exceeding the car's value. Additionally, leaks and water ingress are possible, so it's essential to check for any seepage after a car wash.
  • Rear parking sensors: While most models come with rear parking sensors, the poor rearward visibility can lead to parking damage. It's crucial to inspect the car for any signs of parking damage, which can be expensive to repair.
  • Alloy wheel damage: Inspect the alloy wheels for any kerb damage, as repairing them can be costly and time-consuming.
  • Diesel engine timing chain: The Mini Cooper S Convertible 2012 was launched after the introduction of BMW-sourced diesel engines, but some owners have experienced premature timing chain wear or complete failure. This issue can result in expensive repairs, especially if the engine rattles at idle after start-up.
  • Gearbox problems: Apart from the manual gearbox failure, the stop-start system has been known to malfunction, causing the car to stall at junctions. The system can also stop working altogether, displaying an error message on the dashboard. These issues can be difficult for Mini dealers to diagnose, making repairs even more challenging.
  • Interior rattles and creaks: The dashboard and other interior areas have suffered from rattles and creaks. Some owners have insisted on having new dashboards fitted, but this doesn't always solve the problem. The speakers can also rattle and distort, or even fail completely, requiring replacement. Furthermore, problems with the air conditioning system have been reported.
  • Windscreen: The Convertible's upright windscreen is prone to rock chips, which can lead to MOT test failures if they are large. Smaller chips can be repaired, but larger ones will require a replacement windscreen.
  • Water pump: A small number of cars built between 20 August 2009 and 30 September 2014 had an additional water pump for the turbocharger that wasn't particularly robust. In extreme cases, it could even melt and catch fire. A recall was issued to replace the pump on affected cars with an improved one.

These common problems with the Mini Cooper S Convertible 2012 should be considered when purchasing a used vehicle. Regular servicing and maintenance can help mitigate some of these issues, but potential buyers should be aware of these potential challenges.

Do 2012 Mini Coopers have problems?

While the 2012 Cooper S has the N18 motor and is more reliable than previous years it still isn't great. The car is fun to drive without a doubt, but as you start climbing the mileage stuff starts really breaking. The only people who work on it are specialty shops or Mini themselves which will cost you a fortune.

Are Mini Coopers convertibles reliable?

Is a used Mini Convertible sports reliable? The Mini managed to get a decent ranking result of ninth out of 28 value and small cars in our latest What Car? Reliability survey. Mini as a brand has risen up the rankings in recent years and finished in third place out of 32 car manufacturers; a great result.

What is the most common problem with Mini Coopers?

Issue #1: Engine Overheating in Mini Cooper S (2007-2010)

Oil cooler leaks have also been reported on some vehicles. These problems cause the engine to gradually overheat, leading to coolant loss and severe damage if left unchecked. Head gasket failure is a common result of the engine overheating in the R56 Cooper S.

Is Mini Coopers engine reliable?

MINI Coopers are, for the most part, reliable vehicles. However, they do suffer from a high frequency of costly repairs, primarily due to the heritage of the powerplant nestled beneath the bug-eyed hood.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-27
  • VIN: WMWSV3C59CT
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Nothing has failed yet, however, the oil stick is completely illegible. On a car that fails to have an electronic dipstick and likes to burn oil, as well as has a very small oil capacity (Around 5 liters or less) this design is going to cause the engine to run out of oil without the driver knowing. It is a seriously bad design, especially combined with BMW recommending a 10,000 mile oil change, the car will burn off all the oil it has and operator will have no idea due to the faulty design of the dipstick. I generally like BMWS engineering and designs, but this one is just atrocious and I have no idea how it got approved. Running a car out of oil usually causes the engine seize unless you shut it off at the right time, which, most people will not do. Imagine if your engine seizes on the highway? No it hasn't been inspected, I can send pictures of it, if you want? Or a video? I have not had this problem yet (knock on wood) but I have read the only warning sign, is the sound of an engine without oil and the oil pressure light comes on (which at that point you have maybe 3s to pull over and shut off the engine before it toasts the engine) I have also read about the engines consuming the entire oil capacity if you follow the BMW recommended schedule. It all just seems like a huge oversight for a company that usually has few issues.
