2010 Bmw M5 problems

The BMW M5 is a high-performance variant of the BMW 5 Series marketed under the BMW M sub-brand. It is considered an iconic vehicle in the sports sedan category. The M5 has always been produced in the sedan (saloon) body style, but in some countries the M5 has also been available as a wagon (estate) from 1992 to 1995, from 2006 to 2010, and since 2024.

The first M5 model was hand-built in 1985 on the E28 535i chassis with a modified engine from the M1 that made it the fastest production sedan at the time. M5 models have been produced for every generation of the 5 Series since 1985.

E28 M5 (1984–1988)

The first BMW M5, based on the E28 5 Series, was manufactured from October 1984 to June 1988. It made its debut at the Amsterdam Motor Show in February 1985. It was based on the 535i chassis with various mechanical changes, most notably the M88/3 engine (shared with the E24 M635CSi grand tourer coupé) which was an updated version of the engine used in the M1 sports car. At its launch, the E28 M5 was the fastest production sedan in the world.

The official markets for the E28 M5 were Europe, Great Britain, the United States, Canada, and South Africa. The European and South African cars used the M88/3 engine which has a power output of 210 kW (286 PS; 282 hp).

Cars sold in the United States and Canada used a detuned version of the M88/3 called the S38B35, which was equipped with a catalytic converter and has a power output of 191 kW (256 hp). Due to an extended production run that exceeded BMW's original forecast of production volumes, a class action lawsuit was launched by owners in the United States. The results of this class action was that owners were given a voucher for US$4,000 in 1993. Production of North American specification M5 commenced in November 1986 and ended in November 1987.

Aside from 96 cars which were assembled in kit form at BMW's Plant in Rosslyn, South Africa, all cars were assembled by hand in Germany. Assembly took place at BMW Motorsport's plant in Preussenstrasse in Munich prior to the 1986 factory summer vacation. Thereafter, the M5 production was moved to Daimlerstrasse in Garching where the remainder were built. Production of the M5 continued until November 1988, almost a year after BMW had ceased production of regular E28 models. With a total production of 2,241 units, the E28 M5 remains among the rarest regular production BMW Motorsport cars – after the M1 (456 units), M5 (E34) Touring (891 units) and the 850CSi (1,510 units).

Common 2010 Bmw M5 problems

The BMW M5, a high-performance variant of the 5-Series, is known for its V10 engine and unique body panels. However, it has also been associated with several common problems that have been reported by owners.

One of the most significant issues is the con rod failure, which can lead to complete engine failure. Rod bearings are a critical component of the engine, and their failure can be a costly repair, often exceeding $3,000 at a shop. This issue is particularly concerning because it can potentially lead to complete engine failure, making it a significant concern for M5 owners.

Another common problem with the BMW M5 is related to the throttle actuators. This issue can result in a $1,500+ repair bill, making it a significant concern for M5 owners. Additionally, the SMG transmission is also known to have problems, which can also result in a costly repair bill.

The BMW M5 is also known for experiencing gasket oil leaks, faulty water pumps, and cracked coolant hoses, especially at higher mileage. These issues can add up and become frustrating repairs, even for experienced DIY'ers. Moreover, the S85 engine is an aging engine, and any wear and tear parts are fair game for failure, making it a significant concern for M5 owners.

The BMW M5's unique body panels, including unique bumpers and wider front-wheel arches, can also present problems. For instance, some models were found to have faulty seat occupancy detectors, which could compromise safety in the event of an accident. Additionally, the lower rubber mounts attached to the rear shock absorbers could fail or move out of place, resulting in a compromise of handling characteristics

The BMW M5's steering sensor can also be a problem, with a technical service bulletin addressing the failure of the optical sensor. Rear differentials could also make a grinding noise, which could be caused by incorrect running when new or the use of non-recommended oil. SMG transmissions could also suffer from a failure of the electric motor, which has a technical service bulletin addressing the issue

In summary, the BMW M5 is a high-performance vehicle known for its unique body panels and V10 engine. However, it is also associated with several common problems, including con rod failure, throttle actuator issues, SMG transmission problems, and gasket oil leaks. These issues can be costly and frustrating repairs, making it essential for M5 owners to be aware of them and take appropriate action to address them.

2010 Bmw M5 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2010 Bmw M5.

2013-09-11
  • Manufacturer: BMW of North America, LLC
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TAIL LIGHTS
  • Summary: BMW is recalling certain model year 2008 through 2010 528i, 535i, 550i, and M5 passenger cars manufactured from March 1, 2007, through December 31, 2009. Over time, increased resistance at the taillight electrical contact points may cause damage to the ground terminal and housing of the connector resulting in an intermittent or permanent loss of functionality of one or more rear lamp functions (tail, brake, turn-signal, reverse).
  • Consequence: Intermittent light operation reduces the ability to warn other motorists of the driver's intentions, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear lamp bulb carriers free of charge. Owners may contact BMW customer relations at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at [email protected].

  • Consequence: OVERHEATING COULD LEAD TO A FIRE, EVEN WHILE THE VEHICLE IS NOT IN USE. AS A PRECAUTION, OWNERS ARE ADVISED TO PARK OUTSIDE UNTIL THE REMEDY HAS BEEN MADE.
  • Remedy: BMW WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND SECURE THE BATTERY BOLT CABLE CONNECTION AS NECESSARY, FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 30, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW CUSTOMER RELATIONS AND SERVICES AT 1-800-525-7417.

Negative 2010 Bmw M5 car reviews

  1. Simeon Hodkiewicz 2024-07-24

Although some may find it heavy and less agile than previous M cars, it still offers impressive performance. It may not be the most practical for daily driving, but it certainly has its moments. As J. Clarkson once said, it can be completely annoying until you hit the M button, but when you do, it's a whole different story. While it may not be suitable for all driving situations, it still offers a thrilling experience. However, if you're looking for a more well-rounded option, you may want to consider a Porsche.

  2. Reyes Spencer 2024-02-13

Hello there! If you're considering purchasing this car, I wanted to share some thoughts with you. While there are some mixed reviews out there, it's important to keep in mind that this model is quite different from its predecessors. It's more focused on speed and comfort rather than handling, so if you're looking for a car to cruise around in, this might be a great fit for you. However, if you're looking for a car to take on twisty roads, you might want to keep looking. Just wanted to give you a heads up! Let me know if you have any questions.

Positive 2010 Bmw M5 car reviews

  1. Leon Bernier 2025-01-09

I recently acquired a low mileage 07 M5 despite reading some negative reviews about its fuel economy and SMG transmission. However, I can confidently say that those reviews are not accurate. This car is a driver's dream come true! The motor and transmission are incredibly smooth, and with some time invested in figuring it out, you'll be able to fully appreciate its capabilities. I am currently getting 19mpg while driving at 80mph with the power on. The paddles/F1 shifting is perfect, and the car's acceleration is simply mind-blowing. I own a 911 and a CayenneTurbo, and while I love them both, the M5 is definitely my favorite. If you're a driving enthusiast, I highly recommend getting your hands on one of these M5's. Lastly, having a brother who is a state trooper may come in handy, but I promise you'll still have a blast even without that perk!

  2. Jasmin Becker 2025-01-09

This is a 4 door race car. Performance and handling are as good as the Porsche I used to own. The difference is that this is an everyday driver. I'm glad to hear that you find the iDrive intuitive with a little effort. The SMG is the same - with some experience, it becomes second nature.

  3. Kelvin Lockman 2024-11-21

I'm glad to hear that you've had a positive experience with your vehicle! It's great to know that the car has been easy to drive and navigate, and that the Bluetooth works well. It sounds like you've owned quite a few vehicles in the past, but this one stands out as the ultimate vehicle you've ever owned. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us!

  4. Jaydon Haag 2024-10-28

I've been using my friends' car for a month now (we traded, I have an M3) and I must say, it's a fantastic car! Despite what some critics may say, I found that by tinkering with the settings, everything is programmable. If you set the M mode to everything power, it's frighteningly fast. Some people complain about the stability control not being able to fully disengage, but in my opinion, it's necessary for a car with this much power and mass. The steering is a bit numb, but the sound system and iDrive are a big upgrade. The styling is still understated and the seats are very comfortable. Overall, it's a great car, but I still love my M3.

  5. Damien Schamberger 2024-10-23

What can I say, I absolutely adore my car. I also have a 3 Series, but this one, my friend, is the cream of the crop. I wouldn't even consider trading in my beloved car for anything else. I affectionately refer to her as my baby! Yes, I even gave her a gender. She truly is the best.
