Common Scion Tc 2006 problems
The Scion tC, produced by Toyota's Scion division, is known for its reliability and affordability, making it a popular choice for younger markets, particularly college students. However, like any vehicle, the Scion tC has its share of common problems.
- Excessive Oil Consumption: One of the most common issues with the Scion tC, particularly in the 2007 model year, is excessive oil consumption.
- Clutch Failure: Another common issue with the Scion tC is clutch failure, which can be caused by the dampeners on the clutch disc wearing out due to the heat from the engine.
- Water Pump Seal Failure: The Scion tC's water pump seal can also fail, leading to coolant leaks and engine overheating. This issue can be costly to repair, as it may require the replacement of the water pump and associated parts.
- Head Gasket Failure: A manufacturing defect can cause the head gasket to fail, leading to overheating, white smoke from the exhaust, and rough idling. This issue can be caused by the pressure from the cylinder block leaking through the failed head gasket.
- Alternator Failure: Some Scion tC owners have reported issues with the alternator, which may need to be replaced several times during the vehicle's lifetime.
Despite these common problems, the Scion tC is known for its reliability and can last over 250,000 miles if well-maintained.
What is the most common problems with Scion tC?
Some of the common Scion tC issues include clutch failure, water pump seal failure, excessive oil consumption, and more. The Scion tC can last more than 250,000 miles if it's well-maintained.
Is a 2006 Scion tC a good car?
While not exciting, the Scion tC is a well-rounded, competitively priced coupe with a lot of standard equipment. It's also one of the few coupes out there with a usable back seat. Ride quality is relatively comfortable and quiet. Handling is sound, but not really sporty.
Is Scion as reliable as Toyota?
While the Scion brand may no longer be in production, it was a subsidiary of Toyota, a brand known for producing durable and reliable vehicles. This reliability has transferred well to the Scion xB, which boasts a generally solid track record of performance and minimal major issues.
Does a Scion tC have a Toyota engine?
This was done by taking a Toyota Avensis chassis (which the Scion tC is based on, originally an AWD platform) and converted it into RWD. The car was powered by a tuned BEAMS 3S-GE engine.

- Summary: OIL CONSUMPTION!!! I'VE OWNED MY 2006 SCION TC FOR ABOUT 5 YEARS AND HAVE RECENTLY BEEN EXPERIENCING A HUGE OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE. IT DIDN'T PHASE ME AT FIRST, ALTHOUGH NOW I NEED TO SET MY ODOMETER TO ZERO AND REFILL MY OIL EVERY 800 MILES. I BELIEVE IT IS CERTAIN INTERNAL PARTS THAT ARE CAUSING THIS PROBLEM, SUCH AS THE PISTONS AND THE PISTON RINGS . I'VE NOTICED THAT THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM FOR A LOT OF SCION TC'S LATELY, WHICH HAS BEEN TAKEN CARE OF THROUGH AN EXTENDED WARRANTY PROGRAM FOR THE MODEL YEARS OF 2007-2009. I'M TRYING TO PROVE THAT ISSUE IS ALSO AFFECTING THE 2006 MODEL YEAR TOO, AND WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT IF I COULD RECEIVE SOME HELP CONCERNING THIS ISSUE. I WILL UPLOAD A PHOTO OF AN OLD PISTON THAT SHOWS THIS EXACT PROBLEM.

- Summary: ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, THE SIDE IMPACT SEAT-BOLSTER AND CURTAIN SIDE AIRBAGS MAY INADVERTENTLY DEPLOY. THIS CONDITION CAN OCCUR IF THE DOOR FOR THAT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE IS CLOSED WITH A HIGH RATE OF FORCE WHILE THE VEHICLE'S IGNITION IS IN THE "ON" POSITION OR WITHIN 90 SECONDS OF TURNING THE IGNITION KEY FROM THE "ON" POSITION TO THE "OFF" POSITION.
- Consequence: IF THE SIDE IMPACT SEAT-BOLSTER AND CURTAIN SIDE AIRBAGS INADVERTENTLY DEPLOY, THEY COULD CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY IF AN OCCUPANT IS SEATED ON THE SAME SIDE OF THE VEHICLE AS THE DOOR THAT IS CLOSED WITH A HIGH RATE OF FORCE. UNTIL THE REPAIR HAS BEEN PERFORMED, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT A MINIMAL FORCE/SPEED BE USED TO CLOSE THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER DOORS OR CLOSING THE DOORS AFTER 90 SECONDS HAVE ELAPSED FROM TURNING THE IGNITION KEY FROM THE "ON" TO THE "OFF" POSITION.

IN THIS CONDITION, THE EXPANSION FORCE OF THE GAS MAY BE INSUFFICIENT TO PROPERLY INFLATE THE AIR BAG WHEN THE SRS SYSTEM IS ACTIVATED DURING A CRASH.
- Consequence: THIS MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY TO THE OCCUPANT IN THE INVOLVED SEATING POSITION IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SPECIFIC SRS AIR BAG. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 6, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-888-270-9371, SCION AT 1-866-548-1851, OR LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.

I had a problematic 95 Chevy Camaro, so I decided to replace it with a tC. The tC had the sporty look I wanted without the high price tag. It rides very well and accelerates quickly. I was able to customize it to make it personal and ensure that the additions fit properly. The car also blocks out a lot of outside noise, which is great because when I pull into my garage, the sound of my dogs barking is now only a muffle. To top it off, Scion cars are known for their reliability, so I feel safe driving it. I highly recommend this car to anyone who wants a lot of features and reliability without having to pay a fortune.
-
I would have happily paid more for this. I am still amazed at how affordable it is, and the extras that come with it are fantastic! I traded in a $50,000+ vehicle that was only 3 years old for the Scion, and I don't regret it one bit.
-
I recently sold this car after owning it for two years. While it served its purpose, I found that it did not meet my expectations. The acceleration was not as smooth as I would have liked, and the fuel efficiency was not great, only getting 21mpg combined. Additionally, the car only had two airbags and the seats were not very comfortable. The center console was not very useful and the gearbox was clunky. The electric throttle was also unresponsive. While the car had a nice blue dash cluster, the indicator lights were too bright and had to be covered with duct tape. The car also had some mechanical issues, such as CV joint failures and oil leaks. Despite its nice appearance, I would not recommend this car. If you are looking for a reliable and affordable car, I suggest considering a Corolla instead.
-
You'll love your decision to buy this car!
-
I've had the car for almost a year and love it! I am getting better mileage than the EPA. On trips, I get from 31 to 34 MPG (EPA rated at 29 hwy). The only thing I would change is to add a 6-speed. Another gear would be nice on the HWY.

Hey there! So you're interested in this car? It's definitely a fast and sporty ride, which is always exciting. It's also a lot of fun to accessorize since the parts easily pop off and on. However, I do want to mention that it's a bit like the old Honda Civics that were made for play. The trunk can be a bit difficult to lift, especially if you live in New England and have to deal with snow. Just make sure to clear off the snow before trying to open it! Also, be careful because sometimes the trunk can close by itself and hit you in the head. The handle to the trunk can also pop off, but it's an easy fix with some package tape. Lastly, the tires are a bit thin and may not last as long as you'd like. And if you're tall, the head room might be a bit tight. But overall, it's a fun car to drive and play around with!

This small sport car has great road handling! However, if you're not a fan of sport cars, it may not be the best fit for you. The interior is quite small, with only 2 doors, making it difficult to get people in the back seat. That being said, it's perfect for two people to drive around town. My daughter currently drives this car, but now that she's 22, she's looking for a small SUV. I might keep it for weekend driving in SOCAL!

I've owned this car since it had only 77 miles on it, and I've been considering selling it since it hit 5000 miles. While it can be fun to drive at times, it doesn't have as much power under the hood as 75% of the other cars on the road. The only time it feels fast is when there are no other cars around. Unfortunately, the gas mileage isn't great, as I only get 265 miles out of a full tank. The dealership tells me this is due to the type of gas used in different seasons. Additionally, there's a loud whistling noise coming from the sunroof that Toyota refuses to look at unless I pay them. It's definitely time for me to move on.

I am selling my Honda after one year of purchase due to unfortunate circumstances. Although I initially bought it as a replacement for my totaled Accord, I have come to realize that this car is not up to par. While driving it, I have noticed several issues that I dislike, such as the loud whistling noise from the moon-roof that cannot be fixed. It can be quite embarrassing when friends point it out. Additionally, the MPG is quite low, averaging between 22-26, despite the city rating being 19mpg. I would recommend looking into other car options before making a purchase. If you test drive a Honda, you may notice the difference in quality compared to other cars.

We purchased a 2006 Scion tc six months ago with 50,000 miles on it, thinking it would be a reliable car for us. However, we have found that the gas mileage is not great for a car of this size, averaging around 24 miles per gallon and at best 26 miles per gallon. Additionally, the seats are not very comfortable for long trips. We have experienced a few instances where the check engine light has come on, but the mechanic could not find anything wrong. Unfortunately, last night my wife noticed smoke coming from under the hood while driving it home. We took it to a mechanic and discovered that it needs a new motor due to a common issue with the head and block. The cost to fix this issue is over $6000. It is disappointing to learn that this is a common problem that Toyota has not yet recalled and addressed.
