2003 Isuzu Axiom problems
The Isuzu Axiom is a mid-size SUV introduced by Isuzu in 2001 for the 2002 model year. The Axiom is derived from the Isuzu Rodeo and was intended to be Isuzu's response to the popularity of car-based SUVs, such as the Toyota Highlander, replacing the Trooper as Isuzu's flagship vehicle in the United States.
Exclusively sold in the United States and Costa Rica, the Axiom was built alongside the Rodeo in Lafayette, Indiana, at Subaru Isuzu Automotive, Inc. The peculiar styling and truck-based platform was poorly received in the marketplace. The Axiom was discontinued and replaced by the Chevrolet TrailBlazer-derived Isuzu Ascender in 2004, leading to Isuzu's withdrawal from manufacturing and selling passenger vehicles in North America in 2009.
The Axiom had two trim levels: the base and the up-level XS. The XS trim had features like fog lamps, a sunroof, heated front seats, an auto-dimming mirror with Homelink, 12-speaker premium audio, and leather upholstery.
The name "Axiom" was determined by a naming contest held by Isuzu and won by Dr. Hakan Urey from Redmond, Washington, who suggested the name and won his own Axiom in 2001. The word means an established, accepted, or self-evidently true statement or proposition.
The Axiom is available with a Torque-On-Demand four-wheel drive system, a direct-injection 6VE1-DI V6 engine and an Aisin Warner AW30-40LS automatic transmission was added in 2004, boosting power from 230 to 250 hp (172 to 186 kW). A new chrome bar grille and liftgate chrome that stretched tail light to tail light was also added.
The Axiom was discontinued in July 2004, and the Lafayette plant was retooled to build the Subaru B9 Tribeca. With the retirement of the Rodeo and Axiom, Isuzu, which once sold a complete line of cars, trucks and SUVs, no longer offered any Japanese-built consumer vehicles in the United States (from 2006–2009, the lineup consisted only of rebadged General Motors vehicles).
In 2013, a recall was issued for the Isuzu Axiom for frames with severe rust issues, NHTSA Campaign Number 13V547000. Similar related vehicles, 1998–2002 Isuzu Rodeo and Honda Passport NHTSA Recall Campaign Number 10V436000, and Isuzu Amigo in 2012, Campaign Number 12V306000.
The Axiom is a slightly diluted production version of the 1999 Isuzu ZXS concept that debuted at the 1999 Tokyo Motor Show. Isuzu also built 3 Axiom concepts: the 2001 Axiom XSF, 2002 Axiom XSR, and 2003 Axiom XST.
Chinese manufacturer Great Wall later copied the design of the Axiom for their Great Wall Haval/Hover SUV, albeit with a minor restyling of the body.
The 2001 movie Spy Kids and its 2002 sequel featured an Isuzu Axiom as part of a promotion, even having a lenticular poster and an RC car made by RadioShack.

What is the common problem of Isuzu D Max 2016?
A lot of people using D-Maxs for work have found that the standard suspension is a bit underdone for carting around really big loads like loaded service bodies and such. Load them up and there's just too much rear sag and that translates to iffy steering and a loss of braking performance in a big emergency.
Who used Isuzu engines?
Isuzu has used both its own engines and General Motors-built engines. It has also produced engines for General Motors, Renault, Saab, Honda, Nissan, Opel, Toyota, and Mazda.
Who owns Isuzu engines?
Isuzu is a publicly traded company, and its shares are held by a wide range of other companies and individuals. In 2022, the most prominent shareholders of Isuzu stock are the Mitsubishi Corporation, the ITOCHU Corporation, and the Toyota Motor Corporation.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2004-09-03
- Number Of Injuries: 3
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: NOT EVEN A YEAR AFTER PURCHASING MY 2003 ISUZU AXIOM, I HAVE HAD MULTIPLE ISSUES WITH THE BRAKES. ON 5 OR MORE OCCASIONS, I HAVE HAD TO COME TO A SUDDEN STOP OR HAVE PRESSED THE BRAKES LIGHTLY ON A BUMPY SERVICE AND HAVE HAD VERY POOR RESULTS. THE RESULTS INCLUDE A SENSE OF THE BRAKES NOT WORKING AT ALL. BEFORE I PURCHASED THE AXIOM, I OWED A 98 ISUZU RODEO THAT HAD VERY SIMILAR BRAKING ISSUES. I HAD A WRECK IN MY 1998 RODEO WHERE I FEEL THAT MY BRAKES FAILED WHEN I HAD TO COME TO A SUDDEN STOP IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. THAT WAS 3 YEARS AGO AND I STILL SUFFER ON A DAILY BASIS FROM THAT CAR ACCIDENT. I RECALL THAT I PRESSED MY BRAKES HARD AND I HAD TO LET OFF THE BRAKE AND THEN PRESS THEM AGAIN FOR THE BRAKES TO WORK. THIS IS THE SAME ISSUE THAT I HAVE TO NOW DEAL WITH ON MY AXIOM. THIS PROBLEM DOES NOT HAPPEN JUST WHEN YOU NEED TO BRAKE SUDDENLY. I HAVE HAD ISSUE WHEN STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT.YOU KNOW WHEN YOU LET OFF THE BRAKE SOME TO INCH FORWARD A LITTLE.....MY CAR WILL SOMETIMES LURCH AS THOUGH YOU HAVE PRESSED THE GAS. IT IS A HAZARD AND I REALLY THINK THAT THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE ISUZU BRAKES. MY CAR NOW HAS 34,000 MILES ON IT AND I HAVE BEEN HAVING MY BRAKES CHECKED AND REPLACED SEVERAL TIMES. MY BRAKES CONSTANTLY MAKE A NOISE AND SHUTTERING. I AM TOLD THAT THIS IS MY REAR BRAKES....IT DOES NOT GO AWAY AND I HAVE THEM REPLACED AND ADJUSTED SEVERAL TIMES, AS WELL AS REPLACING THE FRONT BRAKES. *AK
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-03-08
- Number Of Injuries: 2
- Crash: 1
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: I HAVE HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM VIRTUALLY SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR IN NOV 2003. WHEN I BRAKE ON A BUMPY OR WET ROAD, OR WHEN I HAVE TO BRAKE HARD TO STOP IN AN EMERGENCY, THE CAR RATTLES AND MAKE S GRINDING SOUND. IT ALSO TAKE EXTRA LONG TO SLOW THE VEHICLE MUCH LESS STOP. THE LAST TIME I HAD THIS PROBLEM I WAS DRIVING IN TRAFFIC AND A VAN SEVERAL VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME STOPPED TO MAKE AN ILLEGAL U-TURN. I TEND TO KEEP A GREATER DISTANCE BETWEEN MY CAR AND THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME DUE TO THE BRAKE ISSUE. REGARDLESS, THE ROAD I WAS ON HAS A FEW BUMPS. AT THE POINT OF ATTEMPTING TO STOP AND AVOID HITTING THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME THE BRAKES WENT INTO ANTI-LOCK AND DIDN'T STOP MY CAR BEFORE I HIT THE CAR. I HAVE ALREADY CHANGE THE BRAKE TWO OTHER TIMES AND HAD ROTORS REPLACED ONE. I WILL BE NEEDING NEW BRAKES AND ROTORS WITHIN THE NEXT 5-10K MILES. FOUR SETS OF BRAKES IN LESS THAN 70K MILES SCREAMS THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM BESIDE THE VEHICLE NOT STOPPING, OR SLOWING SIGNIFICANTLY IN AN EMERGENCY. *JB
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2003-09-10
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

THE VIBRATING STARTS FROM THE BACK AND MOVES TO THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE WITH THIS ENORMOUS VIBRATING SOUND. I HAVE TAKEN THIS VEHICLE TO SEVERAL DEALERSHIPS ACROSS THE UNITED STATES AND NO ONE SEEMS TO KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, ALL I KEEP DOING IS GETTING THE RUN AROUND, AND THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR ABOUT FOUR YEARS. NOW AND I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO GO TO TRY AND RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. NOBODY ACTS LIKE THEY REALLY WANT TO HELP. I' HAD THE BRAKES REPLACED THREE TIMES, HAD THE ROTORS REPLACED ONCE UNDER WARRANTY.*AK
2003 Isuzu Axiom recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2003 Isuzu Axiom.
- Manufacturer: Isuzu Manufacturing Services of America
- Components: SUSPENSION:REAR
- Summary: Isuzu Manufacturing Services of America, Inc (Isuzu) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Rodeo and Axiom, and 2003 Rodeo Sport vehicles that were originally sold in, or are currently registered in, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Kentucky and Missouri. These vehicles may experience excessive corrosion near the forward mounting point bracket for the left or right rear suspension lower link.
- Consequence: The corrosion may allow the bracket to detach from the frame, impacting vehicle handling and increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Isuzu will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear suspension lower link bracket area. For vehicles in which little or no corrosion is found, the area will be treated with an anti-corrosive compound. For vehicles in which corrosion has damaged the rear suspension lower link bracket and affected its connection to the vehicle frame, a reinforcement bracket will be installed. In the event the corrosion is so severe that the reinforcement bracket remedy would not be sufficient, Isuzu will offer to repurchase the vehicle for an amount based on the Kelley Blue Book "Private Party" price. All inspections and remedies will be provided free of charge for vehicles that are 10 years old or less. For vehicles older than 10 years, Isuzu will offer a free remedy, but only if the vehicle is presented to an Isuzu service facility dealer within 12 months of when owner notifications were issued, after that time owners will be charged for the repairs. The recall is expected to begin in mid-December 2013. Isuzu owners may contact Isuzu at 1-800-255-6727.

THIS RECALL WILL BE LAUNCHED FOR VEHICLES REGISTERED IN TEXAS AND THE FOUR SURROUNDING STATES: OKLAHOMA, ARKANSAS, NEW MEXICO AND LOUISIANA.
- Consequence: A FUEL LEAK COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE FIRE.
- Remedy: FOR VEHICLES REGISTERED IN THE STATES IDENTIFIED ABOVE, DEALERS WILL PROVIDE A NEW COVER OVER THE EXISTING FEED PORT ON THE FUEL PUMP OR, IF THE EXISTING FEED PORT HAS ALREADY BEEN DAMAGED, DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW FUEL PUMP THAT IS EQUIPPED WITH THE NEW COVER. THE NEW COVER WILL BE MADE OF A DIFFERENT MATERIAL. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 25, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727.

True, the storage space is limited and the ride is not as smooth as the Highlander or Endeavor, but the price is much lower, too. However, my Axiom seems well made, is really fun to drive and I got the XS 4x4 fully loaded (minus the trailer hitch) for under $26K. It's a great deal!
-
I bought this car because, with the rebate, it was a great value. I'm pleasantly surprised at how much fun it is to drive. It's the perfect size and has been completely trouble-free.
-
This SUV is truly remarkable, especially for its time up until 2005. Isuzu's commitment to quality is evident in every aspect of this vehicle. Personally, I make sure to change the oil every 7000 miles to keep it running smoothly.
-
So far, not a single problem. I'm amazed at how well it responds when pushed. It'll be nice to see the Ascender have the looks of the Axiom in future editions.
-
I see that you've had your Axiom since 11/02. That's great to hear! It's wonderful to know that you feel it's the best SUV you've ever owned and that you find the value to be outstanding.

Hi there! Thank you for sharing your experience with your 03 Axiom. It sounds like you had a great first impression of the vehicle, but unfortunately, you've been experiencing some issues with the transmission. That can definitely be frustrating. Have you tried taking it back to the dealership again to see if they can diagnose the issue? I hope everything gets sorted out for you soon!
Marcelo Schinner 2024-10-16
After purchasing the vehicle, we noticed a rotten egg smell from the exhaust. We have had it investigated three times, but unfortunately, the dealer says that Isuzu claims it is a 'normal' smell for their engine. They suggested reducing the sulfur content in the gasoline, but the smell persists. Additionally, we have found the suspension to be quite uncomfortable and the steering requires nearly 20 turns to make a sharp turn. Overall, we are disappointed with this vehicle, especially since its value has dropped by $8,000.00 just four months after our purchase. We hope to find a solution to these issues soon.
Vaughn Jacobson 2024-09-16
I'm not a big fan of this SUV. The one I have doesn't seem to freewheel going downhill at 40 to 50 miles per hour. It downshifts out of overdrive and the tachometer will go from 2 to 3 or 3.50. I don't think this is normal, as it doesn't happen every time. Has anyone else experienced this issue? It seems like it could be affecting the miles per gallon. Additionally, the back door is too narrow and doesn't open wide enough for easy exit. This is simply a design flaw in the car. There's really no reason why the back door should be this way. A small change could solve this problem.

I have already driven 1600 miles and encountered a few issues such as a squeaky rear suspension, a blower motor that needs replacing, and terrible stock tires. Although the build quality is okay, it is not as good as my previous Nissan Frontier. However, the transmission works well and the towing ability has been excellent. Despite the minor problems, I still love my Axiom!!! I use it as a weekend vehicle and always look forward to driving it.

However, it is important to note that this is a mechanical flaw that can be addressed by a qualified mechanic. While it may be frustrating to deal with, it is not an insurmountable problem. With the right expertise, this issue can be resolved and the SUV can be made safe to drive. It is important to seek out a reputable mechanic who can diagnose and fix the issue.
