The Isuzu Axiom is a mid-size SUV introduced by Isuzu in 2001 for the 2002 model year. The Axiom is derived from the Isuzu Rodeo and was intended to be Isuzu's response to the popularity of car-based SUVs, such as the Toyota Highlander, replacing the Trooper as Isuzu's flagship vehicle in the United States.

Exclusively sold in the United States and Costa Rica, the Axiom was built alongside the Rodeo in Lafayette, Indiana, at Subaru Isuzu Automotive, Inc. The peculiar styling and truck-based platform was poorly received in the marketplace. The Axiom was discontinued and replaced by the Chevrolet TrailBlazer-derived Isuzu Ascender in 2004, leading to Isuzu's withdrawal from manufacturing and selling passenger vehicles in North America in 2009.

The Axiom had two trim levels: the base and the up-level XS. The XS trim had features like fog lamps, a sunroof, heated front seats, an auto-dimming mirror with Homelink, 12-speaker premium audio, and leather upholstery.

The name "Axiom" was determined by a naming contest held by Isuzu and won by Dr. Hakan Urey from Redmond, Washington, who suggested the name and won his own Axiom in 2001. The word means an established, accepted, or self-evidently true statement or proposition.

The Axiom is available with a Torque-On-Demand four-wheel drive system, a direct-injection 6VE1-DI V6 engine and an Aisin Warner AW30-40LS automatic transmission was added in 2004, boosting power from 230 to 250 hp (172 to 186 kW). A new chrome bar grille and liftgate chrome that stretched tail light to tail light was also added.

The Axiom was discontinued in July 2004, and the Lafayette plant was retooled to build the Subaru B9 Tribeca. With the retirement of the Rodeo and Axiom, Isuzu, which once sold a complete line of cars, trucks and SUVs, no longer offered any Japanese-built consumer vehicles in the United States (from 2006–2009, the lineup consisted only of rebadged General Motors vehicles).

In 2013, a recall was issued for the Isuzu Axiom for frames with severe rust issues, NHTSA Campaign Number 13V547000. Similar related vehicles, 1998–2002 Isuzu Rodeo and Honda Passport NHTSA Recall Campaign Number 10V436000, and Isuzu Amigo in 2012, Campaign Number 12V306000.

The Axiom is a slightly diluted production version of the 1999 Isuzu ZXS concept that debuted at the 1999 Tokyo Motor Show. Isuzu also built 3 Axiom concepts: the 2001 Axiom XSF, 2002 Axiom XSR, and 2003 Axiom XST.

Chinese manufacturer Great Wall later copied the design of the Axiom for their Great Wall Haval/Hover SUV, albeit with a minor restyling of the body.

The 2001 movie Spy Kids and its 2002 sequel featured an Isuzu Axiom as part of a promotion, even having a lenticular poster and an RC car made by RadioShack.

WE THEN REPLACED 2 OF THE COILS, THEN THE SPARK PLUGS AGAIN, WITH NO LUCK. I HAVE EXPERIENCED LOSS OF POWER WHEN PULLING OUT FROM A STOP SIGN, RESULTING IN SEVERAL CLOSE CALLS FOR ACCIDENTS. I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR IN A COUPLE OF TIMES BEFORE AND THE SAME THING HAS HAPPENED--NOT A DROP OF OIL IN THE CAR WITH A 1000 MILES OR MORE FROM AN OIL CHANGE. THE MECHANIC SAID THE ONLY FIX IS A NEW ENGINE. MY CAR IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, SO I HAD IT TOWED TO A DEALER IN AUGUSTA GEORGIA. I LIVE IN COLUMBIA SC AND THAT IS THE CLOSET PLACE I COULD TAKE IT TO HAVE WARRANTY WORK DONE. THE TWO PEOPLE THAT WITNESSED THIS RAN TO MY CAR AND OPENED BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER DOORS AND MY FEET WERE STILL ON THE BRAKE ALL THE WAY FLOOR. MY AIR BAGS DID NOT GO OFF BECAUSE I WAS ON THE BRAKE SO HARD THAT MY BUMPER WENT UNDER THE CROWN VICTORIA. MY BUMPER PUT A SMALL DENT IN THE CROWN'S GAS TANK. I DID NOT GET HURT BECAUSE THERE WAS NO IMPACT TO THE BUMPER. ESTIMATED DAMAGE TO MY CAR IS $4600. TO $5000. IT BUSTED MY RADIATOR AND BUCKLED MY HOOD. I CALLED THE POLICE AND CONTACTED MY INSURANCE COMPANY AND REQUESTED THAT MY INSURANCE COMPANY DO AN INVESTIGATION TO SEE WHY THE ACCELERATOR STUCK. THEY SAID THAT THEY WOULD BRING IN AN ENGINEER TO DETERMINE WHAT THE FAILURE WAS. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE BODY SHOP. THE INSURANCE COMPANY HAD THE BODY PEOPLE TO LOOK AT THE MANUAL LINKAGE ON THE THROTTLE. THE BODY PEOPLE SAID THAT IT LOOKED FINE AND THAT WAS THE END OF THE BIG INVESTIGATION. THE INSURANCE CO. SAID THAT WAS ALL THEY COULD DO. NO QUALIFIED MECHANIC HAS EVER LOOKED AT THE CAR SINCE THE ACCIDENT. THE INSURANCE COMPANY IS DONE WITH THEIR INVESTIGATION. *NM

  • Summary: WE HAVE OWNED OUR AXIOM FOR 3 MONTHS, AFTER APPROX 1000 MILES WE NOTICED THAT WHEN STARTING THE CAR OCCASIONALLY RIGHT AFTER THE VEHICLE STARTED IT WOULD BUCK, BACK FIRE,SMOKE AND HAVE NO POWER AT ALL FOR APPROX THE FIRST 1-2 MINUTES OF RUNNING. WE DID'NT THINK TO MUCH OF AS IT WAS BRAND NEW AND HAD NOT BEEN BROKEN IN AS OF YET. THEN IT STARTED TO HAPPEN MORE OFTEN AND WOULD EVEN STALL BEFORE WE GOT OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY.WE BROUGHT IT IN FOR THE 1ST OIL CHANGE AT 4000 MILES AND HAD THEM CHECK IT AND THE SAID THAT THERE WAS NO CODE ON THE COMPUTER SO IT MUST HAVE BEEN BAD GAS (I DON'T THINK SO) ALSO WHEN THIS OCCURS GOING DOWN THE ROAD THE TRANSMISSION ACTS UP AFTER IT CLEARS UP LIKE IT SURGES FORWARD AND BACK. I'M WRITING THIS TODAY BECAUSE ON 8/19/04 I WENT TO DINNER AND LEAVING I HAD TO CROSS 3 LANES OF HEAVY TRAFFIC TO GO HOME. WHEN I PULLED OUT THE CAR BUCKED,BACKFIRED AND CLOSE TO NO POWER AT ALL, I WAS ALMOST "T" BONED BY A TRACTOR TRAILER AND ANOTHER CAR. THE CAR STRAIGHTENED IT SELF OUT JUST IN TIME AND I WAS ABLE TO GET OUT OF THERE WAY. MY WIFE SAID IT DID IT TO HER WHEN SHE TRIED TO PASS A CAR BUT THAT SHE PUT THE GAS PEDAL TO THE FLOOR AND IT PICKED UP AND RAN OK AFTER THAT. I HAVE ANOTHER APPOINT TO HAVE SUSPENSION CHECKED AND I HOPE THEY WILL LOOK AT THIS TO. 2ND THING IS A REAR SUSPENSION PROBLEM. WHEN THE CAR HAS 2 ADULTS, 2 CHILDREN AND 3 SUIT CASES IN THE REAR AND TRAVELING THE HIGHWAY. WHEN THE ROAD SURFACE CHANGES LIKE GOING ON TO A BRIDGE THE REAR END WILL BOUNCE AND BOUNCE SEVERAL TIME UNTIL IT STOPS, I ALSO HAD THIS CHECKED AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE STRUTS SO THERES NOTHING THEY CAN DO. NOW I HAVE TO WATCH MY SPEED WHEN I SEE THE ROAD SURFACE CHANGE BECAUSE IT HAS BOUNCED VERY, VERY BADLY. THIS TO WILL BE CHECKED AGAIN WHEN I BRING IT BACK. *AK

SINCE THEN I HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER FOR THE FOURTH TIME. THE MILAGE IS NOW 4203. I AM STILL DRIVING A LOANER VEHICLE SINCE JUNE 6 2004.   • Summary: Isuzu Manufacturing Services of America, Inc (Isuzu) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Rodeo and Axiom, and 2003 Rodeo Sport vehicles that were originally sold in, or are currently registered in, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Kentucky and Missouri. These vehicles may experience excessive corrosion near the forward mounting point bracket for the left or right rear suspension lower link.
  • Consequence: The corrosion may allow the bracket to detach from the frame, impacting vehicle handling and increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Isuzu will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear suspension lower link bracket area. For vehicles in which little or no corrosion is found, the area will be treated with an anti-corrosive compound. For vehicles in which corrosion has damaged the rear suspension lower link bracket and affected its connection to the vehicle frame, a reinforcement bracket will be installed. In the event the corrosion is so severe that the reinforcement bracket remedy would not be sufficient, Isuzu will offer to repurchase the vehicle for an amount based on the Kelley Blue Book "Private Party" price. All inspections and remedies will be provided free of charge for vehicles that are 10 years old or less. For vehicles older than 10 years, Isuzu will offer a free remedy, but only if the vehicle is presented to an Isuzu service facility dealer within 12 months of when owner notifications were issued, after that time owners will be charged for the repairs. The recall is expected to begin in mid-December 2013. Isuzu owners may contact Isuzu at 1-800-255-6727.

SILICON HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED IN THE FUEL SYSTEMS OF AFFECTED VEHICLES AND IN CERTAIN FUEL AVAILABLE IN THE REGION OF TYLER, TEXAS. THIS RECALL WILL BE LAUNCHED FOR VEHICLES REGISTERED IN TEXAS AND THE FOUR SURROUNDING STATES: OKLAHOMA, ARKANSAS, NEW MEXICO AND LOUISIANA.
  • Consequence: A FUEL LEAK COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE FIRE.
  • Remedy: FOR VEHICLES REGISTERED IN THE STATES IDENTIFIED ABOVE, DEALERS WILL PROVIDE A NEW COVER OVER THE EXISTING FEED PORT ON THE FUEL PUMP OR, IF THE EXISTING FEED PORT HAS ALREADY BEEN DAMAGED, DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW FUEL PUMP THAT IS EQUIPPED WITH THE NEW COVER.     The direct inject engine started to misfire at 3500 miles. Despite 8 trips to the dealer, the repair person said, 'This engine was designed to misfire.' It was a scary experience as the engine misfired while entering traffic, nearly causing a couple of accidents. I was disappointed with the outcome, but I'm hopeful that the data recorder will help identify the issue. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

    The Axiom is an excellent vehicle that I would highly recommend to anyone. It has a great mid-size design with quality interior layout and materials. The vehicle is gutsy in its acceleration and speed and is more than adequate for towing (5000 lbs). It also gets very good gas mileage and is comfortable even on a 12 hour non-stop trip to Tennessee. With plenty of leg room in the back seat and cargo space in the back, it is a great starter car for a teenager or a commuter car for anyone. Overall, the Axiom is a fantastic choice for anyone in the market for a reliable and high-performing vehicle.

    I'm so happy with my Axiom! I compared it to a lot of V4 and V6 SUVs, and I definitely got the most bang for my buck with the Axiom. While the dealer service hasn't been as good as when I owned an Infiniti, I still think the car is overall very nice for the money. It offers a lot of leg room and the interior is much roomier and nicer than the Toyota Highlander, which was a lot more expensive. Plus, it can tow up to 4500 lbs, which is great if you need to haul trailers. The gas mileage isn't the best at 15 MPG, but I still get lots of compliments on this car!

    This car is really fun to drive! While it may not be the most fuel-efficient, I've definitely had worse. The torque on demand is amazing and has never let me down. It's so much better than a 2-wheel drive or front-wheel drive car. The passenger side is a bit tight on space, but it's perfect for someone of medium build. I absolutely love the back cargo area - it's just the right size and I've never had any issues fitting everything I need. Honestly, I wouldn't trade this car for a Cadillac Escalade, even if you paid me!
