Mercedes, who sold the car to me new, refuses to do any repair work as they have discontinued Smart sales in the US. If the communications for the transmission fails during operation, this will be very dangerous. There are numerous reports on the internet of similar issues and owners trying to repair this themselves. Mercedes needs to be forced to repair what they have sold and represented. If this is a software update issue, who has the software to fix this issue? It is outrageous that NHTSA has not enforced these issues with Mercedes Benz of America.

I LEFT A MESSAGE AND WAS CALLED BACK YESTERDAY 5/7/2020 BY [XXX]. HE TOLD ME THAT THERE WERE NO DEALERSHIP OR APPROVED REPAIR CENTERS IN ALASKA AND THAT SINCE I CHOSE TO LIVE REMOTE THAT 'UNFORTUNATELY' IT'S MY PROBLEM. - Summary: Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2008-2009 smart fortwo cabrio and fortwo coupe vehicles. The rear insulation mat in the engine compartment may deform, deteriorate, and loosen over time, allowing the mat to contact hot exhaust system components.
- Consequence: If the mat contacts hot exhaust system components, it can increase the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear insulation mat with an improved one, free of charge. The recall began in July 2018. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2018060010.

This car is amazing! It's so much fun to drive and I feel incredibly safe when I'm behind the wheel. The acceleration is better than you might expect and the quality is excellent, especially considering the price. The car feels rock solid and the steering is go-kart-like, almost like it was designed by BMW. Even when I'm driving at 60mph and turning hard, the car doesn't roll or tilt, which makes me feel confident and excited to drive it. Overall, I'm really impressed with how well this car is put together and it definitely doesn't feel cheap at all!

I originally bought a blue with silver tridian coupe back in July. Unfortunately, I had issues with water retention in the rear hatch and had to bring it in for repairs. During the repair process, I was given a cabriolet smart loaner and I fell in love with the convertible. I immediately upgraded to a red with a black tridian convertible because of the 1.2% APR financing promotion, despite the $3000 depreciation for trade-in. I have no regrets and I absolutely LOVE the convertible. Please read my other review for the coupe, as the same applies to this car.

I am 6 ft 4 inches tall and 290 lbs, and I must say that the room in the car is absolutely fabulous! The handling is fantastic too. In just ten days, I have had about 30 people stop and ask to sit or see the inside. They can't believe how comfortable it is. Thank you, George Brown!

I've heard some complaints that the Smart car is slow or doesn't shift like an automatic, but I think it's important to remember that the purpose of the ForTwo, and the reason I bought it, was for its economy, not speed. However, I have to say that it's definitely not a slug! If you wind it up, it goes great! I find that 75mph on the freeway is comfortable. Every day, I'm more and more impressed with my Smart car. It's true that the transmission is a manual that is automated, so it shifts exactly how I would expect it to, not like an automatic. It takes a little getting used to, but once you understand it, it's actually quite fun! I'm impressed with the ride for a 1800lb car, and as someone who is 6'1

The car has a jeep-like feel, which some may find hard and stiff, and it may be slow to accelerate. The brake pedal may also be uncomfortable. However, it is a great option for those who face parking issues on their daily commute. In fact, it has allowed me to compete with motorcycles. Although, in other aspects, it may be disappointing, such as the slow transmission and insufficient air conditioning. If I didn't have to worry about parking, I may not have chosen this car. But given my circumstances, I would buy it again.

The 2008 and 2009 smart cars have had issues with the paint peeling off within a few years, despite being well taken care of. As a senior who saved for three years to purchase my car, I am disappointed to see the paint peeling off like crazy. I have taken impeccable care of my car, garage kept, washed with water only, and with no accidents. I brought this to the attention of Mercedes and the smart headquarters to apply for their 'goodwill out of warranty process', but unfortunately, I was denied twice. Despite their approved place recommending to replace the panels or paint the car, they have refused to do so. It is disheartening to see the clear coat peeling off the whole car, and it is not something that should happen to a car that was well taken care of. I have contacted Mercedes and smart, but they have not taken any ethical or moral responsibility to fix the deficient paint job that was initially put on the car. I have posted two signs on my smart car to warn others about the paint issue. It is important to be cautious when buying these cars, as it may cost a lot to fix the paint job. As a senior on social security, I cannot afford the $2800 to fix my car, nor can I sell it the way it looks. It is unfortunate that smart/Mercedes will not make it right, but I hope that others will be cautious when dealing with the dealership or headquarters.Mercedes failed to back their car up and the transmission failed on me for the 3rd time. As of 2019, I have gotten rid of the car. Although I initially loved the car, I grew to hate it due to its unreliability. The convertible top was also temperamental. I had it auctioned with proceeds going to Wheels for Wishes. I would not deal with Mercedes again.
