The Isuzu Ascender is a mid-size SUV built by General Motors for Isuzu. The 7-passenger Ascender was introduced for the 2003 model year as a replacement for the Isuzu Trooper. The 5-passenger Ascender was introduced for the 2004 model year as a replacement for the Isuzu Rodeo and the Isuzu Axiom.
Overview
The Ascender is the only one of GM's GMT360-based mid-size SUVs that was not GM-branded. The Ascender LWB was dropped after the 2006 model year. Reviews warned of a thin dealer network for warranty repairs, and the Kelley Blue Book projected a relatively low resale value similar to the TrailBlazer. However, Isuzu offered a seven-year/75,000-mile powertrain warranty as well as substantial factory incentives.
The Ascender ended production on June 6, 2008, as part of Isuzu's withdrawal from the United States market.

- Summary: THERE HAS BEEN UNGOING ELECTRICAL ISSUES SINCE BUYING THIS VEHICLE NEW. THE HEADLIGHTS HAVE STOPPED WORKING AND THERE IS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM WITH THE LIGHTS AND THE INTERNAL CHIME. SOMETIMES THE LIGHTS DON'T COME ON OR THE CHIMES CAN NOT BE HEARD AND THEN IT IS WORKING PROPERLY AGAIN. THE ENGINE IN THE VEHICLE IHAD TO BE OREPALCED JUST BEFORE IT WENT TO 60000 MILES SO, IT HAS AN 2005 ENGINE. THIS ENGINE HAS A HARD REVV WHEN SHIFTING GEARS. THERE ARE GAS FUMES COMING INTO THE CABIN. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO THE MECHANIC SEVERAL TIMES AND THEY HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND THE LEAK. I DON'T LIVE IN THE SALT BELT AREA. I LIVE IN NORTHERN FL AND THIS IS NOT THE ONLY PLACE THAT THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN, BUT IT HAS NOT BEEN WHERE THERE ARE SALTED ROADS LIKE THE NORT EAST AND MIDATLANTIC. REQUEST YOUR ASSISTANCE. *TR

- Summary: I HAVE A 2004 ISUZU ASCENDER. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON SO I TOOK IT TO A DEALER TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT. I WAS TOLD THAT THE CAR HAD A FUEL THANK INLET FRACTURE. A SERVICE BULLETIN WAS RELEASED BUT NO RECALL. I BOUGHT THIS CAR BRAND NEW, IT WILL COST ME $2178.33 +TAX TO HAVE IT REPAIRED.AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND OTHER OWNERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I THINK THAT SOMETHING SHOULD B DONE ABOUT THIS. I CONTACTED AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND MY CAR IS NOT IN THE RECALL MODELS. - Summary: CONTINUOUS GAS SMELL IN AND AROUND AUTOMOBILE WHEN STARTING THE ENGINE. ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON IN JAN 2013 ALTHOUGH THE SMELL HAS BEEN PRESENT FOR MANY YEARS. TOOK AUTO TO REPAIR SHOP AND DISCOVERED THAT THEIR WAS A SIZEABLE CRACK AT THE OPENING OF THE GAS TANK. AROUND 1,500 DOLLARS LATER A NEW GAS TANK, NEW FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY, I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THERE IS NO RECALL ON THIS PART FROM GM, ESPECIALLY SINCE SEARCHING THE INTERNET AND DISCOVERING HOW MANY HAVE REPORTED THIS SAME EXACT ISSUE AND THE SCARY THOUGHT THAT THE CAR COULD HAVE BLOWN UP AND ANY TIME. A CLASS ACTION SUIT NEEDS TO BE FILED AGAINST GM. *TR

- Summary: ON CERTAIN TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE DRIVER WISHING TO SIGNAL A TURN BY MOVING THE DIRECTIONAL SIGNAL LEVER, (UP OR DOWN) MAY CAUSE THE FRONT MARKER/TURN LIGHTS AND REAR TURN LIGHTS TO FLASH IN A MANNER SIMILAR TO HAZARD WARNING, RATHER THAN FLASHING ON THE DESIRED SIDE ONLY.
- Consequence: THE DRIVER MAY NOT BE ABLE TO CLEARLY SIGNAL THEIR INTENTIONS TO TURN, CHANGE TRAVEL LANES, OR POTENTIALLY WARN OTHERS OF AN IMPAIRED VEHICLE OPERATING CONDITION INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SUSPECT FLASHER MODULES WITH A NEW FLASHER MODULE DESIGNED WITH SEALED RELAYS AND MORE DURABLE CONTACT MATERIAL INSIDE OF THE RELAYS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 4, 2005. ISUZU BEGAN MAILING OWNER LETTERS ON AUGUST 4, 2005. Overall, I adore my Ascender-Limited! It was purchased in January 2004 and is loaded with everything I wanted in an SUV. The exceptional Bose sound system and Onstar make for a smooth and enjoyable driving experience. Although I have had some issues with the 'check engine light', I have taken it to the dealer and had the ignition, cooling fan system, and battery replaced. Despite these minor setbacks, my SUV has only 16K miles and is still running strong.

I compared the Ascender to a Honda Pilot, Chevy Trailblazer, and GMC Envoy. After extensive research, I chose the Ascender based on its warranty, price, and overall value. I contacted six dealerships and had them compete against each other for my business. It was a stress-free experience as the phone rang every few hours with an Isuzu salesperson dropping the price of the vehicle. I have experienced several electrical issues, including intermittent functionality of the back wiper that requires restarting the car to resolve. Additionally, the hardware in the rear windows had to be replaced due to a malfunctioning electric window, which occurred at only 3600 miles. The serpentine belt also required replacement at 10000 miles.

Drives well and is lots of fun! However, I noticed that there seems to be an electrical issue with the lights dimming at random and the check engine light coming on periodically, even after replacing the battery. I hope this won't turn into 7 trips to the dealership like the other review. Additionally, the paint on the radio controls is coming off. As a first-time Isuzu owner, I'm still on the fence about whether I'll purchase another one.

My wife and I spent weeks searching for our first SUV. We considered many options such as the Tribute, Escape, Pilot, CRV, RAV4 and more. However, the styling of the Ascender caught our eye and we decided to test drive it. We were pleasantly surprised by how roomy it was compared to other SUVs that were much more expensive. Our children loved the way it looked and drove. Although the interior is basic, it is still pretty and quiet. We were thrilled with the final price and the great warranty. We feel like we got a great deal, thanks to Isuzu (GM).
