2005 Isuzu Ascender problems

isuzu logo

The Isuzu Ascender is a mid-size SUV built by General Motors for Isuzu. The 7-passenger Ascender was introduced for the 2003 model year as a replacement for the Isuzu Trooper. The 5-passenger Ascender was introduced for the 2004 model year as a replacement for the Isuzu Rodeo and the Isuzu Axiom.

Overview

The Ascender is the only one of GM's GMT360-based mid-size SUVs that was not GM-branded. The Ascender LWB was dropped after the 2006 model year. Reviews warned of a thin dealer network for warranty repairs, and the Kelley Blue Book projected a relatively low resale value similar to the TrailBlazer. However, Isuzu offered a seven-year/75,000-mile powertrain warranty as well as substantial factory incentives.

The Ascender ended production on June 6, 2008, as part of Isuzu's withdrawal from the United States market.

Common 2005 Isuzu Ascender problems

Common Problems with the Isuzu Ascender 2005:

  • Engine Problems: The engine is the heart of any vehicle, and issues with it can have significant consequences. Some engine problems reported by Isuzu Ascender 2005 owners include random misfires on cylinders after replacing spark plugs, cracked exhaust manifolds, and deteriorated valve cover gaskets that allow oil into plug sockets, causing fouling of the spark plugs.
  • Power Window Controls: The power window controls in the Isuzu Ascender 2005 have been reported as difficult to activate, especially for those with long fingernails. This can be an inconvenience and may require the driver to manually operate the windows.
  • Rear Hatch Handle: The rear hatch handle is located in an open location above the rear bumper, making it prone to getting dirty. This can be an aesthetic issue and may require the driver to clean the handle frequently to maintain the appearance of the vehicle.
  • Cup Holders: The cup holders in the Isuzu Ascender 2005 have been reported as too shallow for large drinks or wide coffee cups. This can be an inconvenience for drivers who prefer to have their drinks within reach while driving.
  • Electrical System Failure: The Electronic Control Module (ECM) in the Isuzu Ascender 2005 is responsible for monitoring all the sensors in the vehicle to ensure that the car's systems are functioning correctly. When the ECM fails, it can cause issues with the air-fuel ratio, engine timing, transmission, and valve timing. Some causes of ECM failure include short-circuits, power surges, and failing batteries.
  • Starting Problems: Some Isuzu Ascender 2005 owners have reported issues with the vehicle not starting. This can be caused by problems with the alternator, starter, or battery, as well as issues with the fuel system or ignition system.

Negative 2005 Isuzu Ascender car reviews

  1. Santiago Rogahn 2024-10-01

I think the SUV was a great deal overall. However, the tires on the SUV are not very good. They don't handle well on wet or snowy pavement. If they put better tires on it, the performance rating would be much higher.

  2. Frankie Brakus 2024-09-20

The vehicle has a strong engine and is great for towing trailers. However, the front passenger seat can be uncomfortable on long trips, as the low and hard armrest can cause hands to fall asleep. On the other hand, the seats in the Envoy are much more comfortable.

Positive 2005 Isuzu Ascender car reviews

  1. Henry Kiehn 2024-11-24

In the first 30 days, I drove over 4000 miles in rain, ice, sleet, and snow. I was pleasantly surprised by how well the vehicle performed. I had total control and great traction. The only issue I encountered was the windshield washer fluid freezing up with the factory fluid at -30 degrees temperature. The engine performed great in the mountains as well as on flatlands.

  2. Hipolito Quigley 2024-10-21

Good value for the money! I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any problems after two years. It sounds like you're enjoying a smooth car-like ride with plenty of power.

  3. Alphonso Hane 2024-10-19

I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any issues with your SUV! It sounds like you've put quite a few miles on it, but it's great to hear that it still runs smoothly. I can tell that you really enjoy driving your Ascender, especially on the highway. It's always nice to have a reliable car for long trips. Thanks for sharing your experience with me!

  4. Evan Hagenes 2024-10-11

There's loads of power underneath the bonnet, and it's ever so sporty with a V8.

  5. Beau Spinka 2024-08-16

You did a great job researching and testing different vans and SUVs to find the perfect 7-seater. The Ascender is an excellent choice! It offers plenty of room in all rows and is very versatile with its folding seats. In fact, the storage is better than any other SUV you tried. You mentioned that you have every option on yours, which sounds really nice and enjoyable to drive. It's great to hear that even though you had a minivan for 16 years, you're pleased with this change. You still have room for 7 people, but now it's a whole lot more fun to drive. While the gas mileage isn't great, it's not much different than your older van. You mentioned getting about 16 in the city and 19 on your first long trip, which is impressive. Based on your experience, you highly recommend this vehicle, and we appreciate your recommendation!
