2005 Isuzu Ascender problems

isuzu logo

The Isuzu Ascender is a mid-size SUV built by General Motors for Isuzu. The 7-passenger Ascender was introduced for the 2003 model year as a replacement for the Isuzu Trooper. The 5-passenger Ascender was introduced for the 2004 model year as a replacement for the Isuzu Rodeo and the Isuzu Axiom.

Overview

The Ascender is the only one of GM's GMT360-based mid-size SUVs that was not GM-branded. The Ascender LWB was dropped after the 2006 model year. Reviews warned of a thin dealer network for warranty repairs, and the Kelley Blue Book projected a relatively low resale value similar to the TrailBlazer. However, Isuzu offered a seven-year/75,000-mile powertrain warranty as well as substantial factory incentives.

The Ascender ended production on June 6, 2008, as part of Isuzu's withdrawal from the United States market.

Common 2005 Isuzu Ascender problems

Common Problems with the Isuzu Ascender 2005:

  • Engine Problems: The engine is the heart of any vehicle, and issues with it can have significant consequences. Some engine problems reported by Isuzu Ascender 2005 owners include random misfires on cylinders after replacing spark plugs, cracked exhaust manifolds, and deteriorated valve cover gaskets that allow oil into plug sockets, causing fouling of the spark plugs.
  • Power Window Controls: The power window controls in the Isuzu Ascender 2005 have been reported as difficult to activate, especially for those with long fingernails. This can be an inconvenience and may require the driver to manually operate the windows.
  • Rear Hatch Handle: The rear hatch handle is located in an open location above the rear bumper, making it prone to getting dirty. This can be an aesthetic issue and may require the driver to clean the handle frequently to maintain the appearance of the vehicle.
  • Cup Holders: The cup holders in the Isuzu Ascender 2005 have been reported as too shallow for large drinks or wide coffee cups. This can be an inconvenience for drivers who prefer to have their drinks within reach while driving.
  • Electrical System Failure: The Electronic Control Module (ECM) in the Isuzu Ascender 2005 is responsible for monitoring all the sensors in the vehicle to ensure that the car's systems are functioning correctly. When the ECM fails, it can cause issues with the air-fuel ratio, engine timing, transmission, and valve timing. Some causes of ECM failure include short-circuits, power surges, and failing batteries.
  • Starting Problems: Some Isuzu Ascender 2005 owners have reported issues with the vehicle not starting. This can be caused by problems with the alternator, starter, or battery, as well as issues with the fuel system or ignition system.

Negative 2005 Isuzu Ascender car reviews

  1. Jamil Schoen 2025-08-21

Although there have been some issues with this car, the engine has been running smoothly without any problems. The AC motor did require repair during the first year, but it was fixed within a week. The blower motor may weaken after extended use, but this is a minor issue. Additionally, some of the speakers and locks have worked intermittently, and the underneath panels under the front seats have broken loose. However, it is important to note that we have not been rough on this vehicle. Overall, the car has held up well and has not had any major engine problems.

  2. Lula Waters 2025-07-22

You've only put 4300 miles on it in 17 months. Unfortunately, you've had to replace a coil pack and thermostat, and you've been experiencing code P0014 which is related to the camshaft positioning sensor. Additionally, the transmission has failed. On the bright side, the exterior looks good with tan seats and door panels, black carpet and dash, and a gray headliner. Although it may seem a little harsh with mild bumps, you never even notice the 5x8 cargo trailer you tow daily, which totals about 1400#. The only downside is the mileage, which is 11.8 MPG due to local driving with mixed use of the trailer.

  3. Santiago Rogahn 2024-10-01

I think the SUV was a great deal overall. However, the tires on the SUV are not very good. They don't handle well on wet or snowy pavement. If they put better tires on it, the performance rating would be much higher.

  4. Frankie Brakus 2024-09-20

The vehicle has a strong engine and is great for towing trailers. However, the front passenger seat can be uncomfortable on long trips, as the low and hard armrest can cause hands to fall asleep. On the other hand, the seats in the Envoy are much more comfortable.

Positive 2005 Isuzu Ascender car reviews

  1. Brady Kirlin 2025-08-23

I did a lot of research and test drove several vans and SUVs that could seat 7 people. I must say, the Ascender is a fantastic vehicle! It is incredibly spacious in all rows and has versatile folding seats. The storage capacity is better than any other SUV I tried. I opted for every available option and it is really nice and enjoyable to drive. After driving a minivan for 16 years, I am really pleased with this change. I still have room for 7 people, but it is a lot more fun to drive. The gas mileage is not great, but it is not much different from my older van. I get about 16 miles per gallon in the city and I got 19 on my first long trip. I highly recommend this vehicle!

  2. Jason Thiel 2025-07-01

I'm not a big fan of any SUV basically because they all look the same. However, I must say that my 2005 Ascender runs perfectly. It has a truck suspension, which is one of the few SUVs that have it, making the suspension just fine. Additionally, it has the best turning ratio than anything I've ever driven, and I used to have a Chevette.

  3. Dusty Emmerich 2025-06-05

Took 3 teenagers and 3 adults to Florida in the new Ascender and it ran great, with plenty of room and very secure in all the bad weather. It even carried cargo on the standard hitch! With a long cruising range and a comfortable ride, we were able to get an impressive 22 MPG. Overall, it was a fantastic experience!

  4. Jairo Goldner 2025-05-08

Took 6 people on a 3000 mile trip to Florida and back and it handled the job great. It was super comfortable, tracked great and achieved over 21 MPG while also carrying a scooter on a platform in the trailer hitch.

  5. Terrell Pagac 2025-04-27

This is my second Asscender. I love it! It's very dependable. I have had this one for almost 5 years and, other than regular maintenance, only one shop repair has occurred. This is the best SUV I have owned. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
