The Isuzu Ascender is a mid-size SUV built by General Motors for Isuzu. The 7-passenger Ascender was introduced for the 2003 model year as a replacement for the Isuzu Trooper. The 5-passenger Ascender was introduced for the 2004 model year as a replacement for the Isuzu Rodeo and the Isuzu Axiom.

Overview

The Ascender is the only one of GM's GMT360-based mid-size SUVs that was not GM-branded. The Ascender LWB was dropped after the 2006 model year. Reviews warned of a thin dealer network for warranty repairs, and the Kelley Blue Book projected a relatively low resale value similar to the TrailBlazer. However, Isuzu offered a seven-year/75,000-mile powertrain warranty as well as substantial factory incentives.

The Ascender ended production on June 6, 2008, as part of Isuzu's withdrawal from the United States market.

Common Isuzu Ascender problems

The Isuzu Ascender, produced between 2003 and 2008, is known for several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues span across various components of the vehicle, including the engine, fuel system, air conditioning, and electrical system.

  • Fuel System Problems: The Isuzu Ascender has been reported to have problems with the fuel system, particularly the fuel tank. The 2004 model year has two complaints of a cracked fuel tank, with an average repair cost of $1,000 at 109,000 miles. This issue seems to be common across several GMC cars that share the same platform as the Ascender.
  • Air Conditioning Problems: Some drivers have reported issues with the air conditioning system in the Isuzu Ascender. The A/C system has been known to operate in extremes, either blowing incredibly cold or not cold at all, or not blowing at all. These issues are often attributed to problems with the blower or blower resistor, which can be repaired affordably.
  • Electrical System Problems: The Isuzu Ascender has also had reported issues with the electrical system, including problems with the alternator, starter, or battery, as well as ignition system repairs and fuel system issues. These problems can lead to the vehicle not starting, which can be a significant inconvenience for drivers.

In summary, the Isuzu Ascender has several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues include engine problems, fuel system problems, air conditioning problems, and electrical system problems. While some of these issues can be repaired affordably, others can be more costly and require extensive repairs or replacement of parts. It is important for Isuzu Ascender owners to be aware of these common problems and to maintain their vehicles regularly to minimize the risk of these issues arising.

  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: THE LOW BEAMS ON MY HEADLIGHTS WILL GO OUT WITHOUT WARNING WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT. MY DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS ALSO WILL TURN OFF WITHOUT WARNING AND TURN BACK ON BUT THIS IS NOT AS MUCH OF A SAFETY ISSUE AS WHEN IT HAPPENS DURING NIGHTTIME DRIVING. SOMETIMES MY HEADLIGHTS WILL NOT WORK FROM THE MOMENT I START MY CAR BUT MOST OF THE TIME THEY SHUT OFF DURING DRIVING. I CAN SWITCH THE HEADLIGHTS TO HIGH BEAMS AND THEY TYPICALLY WORK FINE. ONLY ONCE HAVE I HAD BOTH HIGH AND LOW BEAMS OUT AT THE SAME TIME. WHEN THAT HAPPENED I PARKED MY CAR AND LET IT SIT. WHEN I STARTED MY CAR AFTER ABOUT 30 MIN TO AN HOUR BOTH HIGH AND LOW BEAMS WERE WORKING AGAIN. MY HEADLIGHTS WILL GO OUT WHILE I'M DRIVING IN THE CITY, IN THE COUNTRYSIDE, ON THE HIGHWAY OR ON RESIDENTIAL STREETS, AFTER DRIVING FOR A WHILE OR EVEN WHEN I FIRST START MY VEHICLE AFTER IT HAD BEEN SITTING FOR SEVERAL HOURS. THE REASON FOR MY HEADLIGHTS SPONTANEOUSLY GOING OUT IS UNKNOWN. THE PART THAT CAUSING THE PROBLEM IS UNKNOWN. IT DOES, HOWEVER, SEEM TO BE VERY SIMILAR TO ISSUES THAT HAS CAUSED GM TO DO A RECALL ON OTHER GM VEHICLES WHICH INCLUDES 2006-2009 (?) ISUZU ASCENDERS BUT DOES NOT INCLUDE MY 2004 ISUZU ASCENDER. THE FIRST TIME THAT I EXPERIENCED THIS WAS BACK IN JANUARY 2017. THE LAST TIME THAT I EXPERIENCED THIS WAS LAST NIGHT, MAY 4, 2017.

In the affected vehicles, the headlamp driver module (HDM) may overheat and fail, causing the headlamps and daytime running lights to not illuminate.
  • Consequence: Headlamps that do not illuminate reduce the driver's ability to see the roadway and reduce the vehicle's visibility to oncoming vehicles, both of which increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the HDM, free of charge. The recall began on May 17, 2016. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is 14291.

Latest negative Isuzu Ascender car reviews

  1. Jayson Torp 2025-02-21

    Vehicle year: 2007

We bought our 2006 Ascender brand new and while the body is great, the engine has been a nightmare. Unfortunately, it has died completely even though we took good care of it and it has less than 115,000 miles on it. Despite this, we are grateful that it held up well when we were hit by a large work van. However, we have decided to switch to Honda or Toyota for our future purchases. Thank you for your understanding.

  2. Garnett Streich 2025-02-18

    Vehicle year: 2004

We traded in a 2002 Ford Explorer. The Ascender rides smoother and has more options than the aforementioned. I'm glad to say that I really like the towing capabilities and options that are available on the Ascender. And, so far, we have no complaints.

  3. Erin Goyette 2025-02-14

    Vehicle year: 2007

After almost a year of ownership, I'm glad to say that I really like the vehicle. It handles the snow well and the ride is very good for an SUV. However, I have noticed that there is a problem with the paint getting blasted off on the flairs in front of the rear wheels.

  4. Kamryn Hintz 2025-02-07

    Vehicle year: 2004

I am sorry to hear about the issues you have been experiencing with your new Ascender. It must be frustrating to have to deal with a roaring noise and a bad oil sending unit. I hope the dealership can resolve these issues for you soon. It's understandable that you feel disappointed and no longer a fan of Isuzu. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

  5. Kale Murphy 2025-02-03

    Vehicle year: 2006

Although there have been some issues with this car, the engine has been running smoothly without any problems. The AC motor did require repair during the first year, but it was fixed within a week. The blower motor may weaken after extended use, but this is a minor issue. Additionally, some of the speakers and locks have worked intermittently, and the underneath panels under the front seats have broken loose. However, it is important to note that we have not been rough on this vehicle. Overall, the car has held up well engine-wise.

Latest positive Isuzu Ascender car reviews

  1. Milton Leuschke 2025-02-21

    Vehicle year: 2003

I really liked the car! It's definitely the best car in the world.

  2. Alfredo Huel 2025-02-05

    Vehicle year: 2005

We've only had it for 2 months, so the full story is yet to be told. However, we chose the Ascender because of its superior longevity and performance, just like our previous SUV, the Isuzu Trooper. So far, we're absolutely thrilled with it. Not only was it more reasonably priced than other 7 passenger SUVs we looked at, but it also came with a better warranty.

  3. Cale Armstrong 2025-02-03

    Vehicle year: 2004

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share our experience with SUV shopping last winter. After looking at several options, we ultimately decided on the Ascender. The highway ride was a big factor for us, as well as the price. We couldn't find anything else on the market that offered this combination without adding an extra $6,000 to $10,000 to the purchase price. Thanks for listening!

  4. Aron Bernhard 2025-02-03

    Vehicle year: 2005

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Isuzu Ascender. I've had it for 11 years now and it's been great! The only issues I've had are the gas gauge and speakers on the passenger side stopped working, but other than that, it's been smooth sailing. It rides great, has a quiet ride, and gets good gas mileage at 17/25. It also pulls trailers like a champ! I love the 4x4 feature and at 139,000 miles, it's still running great. I use synthetic oil and I feel it's the best because it doesn't break down and keeps it lubricated. Thanks for listening!

I love this car! The seats are so soft and it's incredibly roomy inside. Plus, there are several power outlets for me to use, which is perfect since I have two cell phones that need to be charged at times. The ride is incredibly smooth and quiet, and I think it's actually bigger than it looks. Overall, I really enjoy this car.
