Isuzu Ascender problems
The Isuzu Ascender is a mid-size SUV built by General Motors for Isuzu. The 7-passenger Ascender was introduced for the 2003 model year as a replacement for the Isuzu Trooper. The 5-passenger Ascender was introduced for the 2004 model year as a replacement for the Isuzu Rodeo and the Isuzu Axiom.
Overview
The Ascender is the only one of GM's GMT360-based mid-size SUVs that was not GM-branded. The Ascender LWB was dropped after the 2006 model year. Reviews warned of a thin dealer network for warranty repairs, and the Kelley Blue Book projected a relatively low resale value similar to the TrailBlazer. However, Isuzu offered a seven-year/75,000-mile powertrain warranty as well as substantial factory incentives.
The Ascender ended production on June 6, 2008, as part of Isuzu's withdrawal from the United States market.

Common Isuzu Ascender problems
The Isuzu Ascender, produced between 2003 and 2008, is known for several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues span across various components of the vehicle, including the engine, fuel system, air conditioning, and electrical system.
- Fuel System Problems: The Isuzu Ascender has been reported to have problems with the fuel system, particularly the fuel tank. The 2004 model year has two complaints of a cracked fuel tank, with an average repair cost of $1,000 at 109,000 miles. This issue seems to be common across several GMC cars that share the same platform as the Ascender.
- Air Conditioning Problems: Some drivers have reported issues with the air conditioning system in the Isuzu Ascender. The A/C system has been known to operate in extremes, either blowing incredibly cold or not cold at all, or not blowing at all. These issues are often attributed to problems with the blower or blower resistor, which can be repaired affordably.
- Electrical System Problems: The Isuzu Ascender has also had reported issues with the electrical system, including problems with the alternator, starter, or battery, as well as ignition system repairs and fuel system issues. These problems can lead to the vehicle not starting, which can be a significant inconvenience for drivers.
In summary, the Isuzu Ascender has several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues include engine problems, fuel system problems, air conditioning problems, and electrical system problems. While some of these issues can be repaired affordably, others can be more costly and require extensive repairs or replacement of parts. It is important for Isuzu Ascender owners to be aware of these common problems and to maintain their vehicles regularly to minimize the risk of these issues arising.

- VIN: 4NUDS13S642
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: THE LOW BEAMS ON MY HEADLIGHTS WILL GO OUT WITHOUT WARNING WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT. MY DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS ALSO WILL TURN OFF WITHOUT WARNING AND TURN BACK ON BUT THIS IS NOT AS MUCH OF A SAFETY ISSUE AS WHEN IT HAPPENS DURING NIGHTTIME DRIVING. SOMETIMES MY HEADLIGHTS WILL NOT WORK FROM THE MOMENT I START MY CAR BUT MOST OF THE TIME THEY SHUT OFF DURING DRIVING. I CAN SWITCH THE HEADLIGHTS TO HIGH BEAMS AND THEY TYPICALLY WORK FINE. ONLY ONCE HAVE I HAD BOTH HIGH AND LOW BEAMS OUT AT THE SAME TIME. WHEN THAT HAPPENED I PARKED MY CAR AND LET IT SIT. WHEN I STARTED MY CAR AFTER ABOUT 30 MIN TO AN HOUR BOTH HIGH AND LOW BEAMS WERE WORKING AGAIN. MY HEADLIGHTS WILL GO OUT WHILE I'M DRIVING IN THE CITY, IN THE COUNTRYSIDE, ON THE HIGHWAY OR ON RESIDENTIAL STREETS, AFTER DRIVING FOR A WHILE OR EVEN WHEN I FIRST START MY VEHICLE AFTER IT HAD BEEN SITTING FOR SEVERAL HOURS. THE REASON FOR MY HEADLIGHTS SPONTANEOUSLY GOING OUT IS UNKNOWN. THE PART THAT CAUSING THE PROBLEM IS UNKNOWN. IT DOES, HOWEVER, SEEM TO BE VERY SIMILAR TO ISSUES THAT HAS CAUSED GM TO DO A RECALL ON OTHER GM VEHICLES WHICH INCLUDES 2006-2009 (?) ISUZU ASCENDERS BUT DOES NOT INCLUDE MY 2004 ISUZU ASCENDER. THE FIRST TIME THAT I EXPERIENCED THIS WAS BACK IN JANUARY 2017. THE LAST TIME THAT I EXPERIENCED THIS WAS LAST NIGHT, MAY 4, 2017.

In the affected vehicles, the headlamp driver module (HDM) may overheat and fail, causing the headlamps and daytime running lights to not illuminate.
- Consequence: Headlamps that do not illuminate reduce the driver's ability to see the roadway and reduce the vehicle's visibility to oncoming vehicles, both of which increase the risk of a vehicle crash.

I really like the Isuzu Ascender! It's essentially the same as the Trailblazer and Envoy, but in my opinion, the Ascender has a much better design and comes with a more affordable price and better warranty.
-
Vehicle year: 2005
In the first 30 days, I drove over 4000 miles in rain, ice, sleet, and snow. I was pleasantly surprised by how well the vehicle performed. I had total control and great traction. The only issue I encountered was the windshield washer fluid freezing up with the factory fluid at -30 degrees temperature. The engine performed great in the mountains as well as on flatlands.

Vehicle year: 2004
I compared the Ascender to a Honda Pilot, Chevy Trailblazer, and GMC Envoy. After extensive research, I chose the Ascender based on its warranty, price, and overall value. I contacted six dealerships and had them compete against each other for my business. It was a stress-free experience as the phone rang every few hours with an Isuzu salesperson dropping the price of the vehicle. After only three days of price wars, I purchased a Limited 7 Pass for only $28,500 from Mili Gordon Dealership in Oklahoma. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

So far I have 600 miles on my Isuzu Ascender and I love it! The ride is very smooth, quiet, and comfortable inside.

Vehicle year: 2006
We bought our 2006 Ascender brand new and while the body is great, the engine has been a nightmare. Unfortunately, it has died completely even though we took good care of it and it has less than 115,000 miles on it. Despite this, we are grateful that it held up well when we were hit by a large work van. However, we have decided to switch to Honda or Toyota for our future purchases. Thank you for your understanding.
Caden Brekke 2024-10-04
Vehicle year: 2004
Drives well and is lots of fun! However, I noticed that there seems to be an electrical issue with the lights dimming at random and the check engine light coming on periodically, even after replacing the battery. I hope this won't turn into 7 trips to the dealership like the other review. Additionally, the paint on the radio controls is coming off. As a first-time Isuzu owner, I'm still on the fence about whether I'll purchase another one.
Cristobal Stokes 2024-10-04

My wife and I spent weeks searching for our first SUV. We considered many options such as the Tribute, Escape, Pilot, CRV, RAV4 and more. However, the styling of the Ascender caught our eye and we decided to test drive it. We were pleasantly surprised by how roomy it was compared to other SUVs that were much more expensive. Our children loved the way it looked and drove. Although the interior is basic, it is still pretty and quiet. We were thrilled with the final price and the great warranty. We feel like we got a great deal, thanks to Isuzu (GM).
Santiago Rogahn 2024-10-01
Vehicle year: 2005
I think the SUV was a great deal overall. However, the tires on the SUV are not very good. They don't handle well on wet or snowy pavement. If they put better tires on it, the performance rating would be much higher.
Frankie Brakus 2024-09-20
Vehicle year: 2005
The vehicle has a strong engine and is great for towing trailers. However, the front passenger seat can be uncomfortable on long trips, as the low and hard armrest can cause hands to fall asleep. On the other hand, the seats in the Envoy are much more comfortable.
