2003 Isuzu Ascender problems
The Isuzu Ascender is a mid-size SUV built by General Motors for Isuzu. The 7-passenger Ascender was introduced for the 2003 model year as a replacement for the Isuzu Trooper. The 5-passenger Ascender was introduced for the 2004 model year as a replacement for the Isuzu Rodeo and the Isuzu Axiom.
Overview
The Ascender is the only one of GM's GMT360-based mid-size SUVs that was not GM-branded. The Ascender LWB was dropped after the 2006 model year. Reviews warned of a thin dealer network for warranty repairs, and the Kelley Blue Book projected a relatively low resale value similar to the TrailBlazer. However, Isuzu offered a seven-year/75,000-mile powertrain warranty as well as substantial factory incentives.
The Ascender ended production on June 6, 2008, as part of Isuzu's withdrawal from the United States market.

Common 2003 Isuzu Ascender problems
The Isuzu Ascender, produced from 2003 to 2008, has been known to have some common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the main issues:
- Harsh Transmission Shifting due to Failed Input Speed Sensor: The input speed sensor, which is responsible for monitoring the speed of the transmission input shaft, may fail. This can result in harsh shifting, delayed engagement, or even complete transmission failure.
- No Start due to Failed Ignition Switch: A failed ignition switch can prevent the engine from starting. This can be a significant inconvenience, especially in emergency situations.
- Engine Problems: Isuzu Ascender owners have reported various engine problems, including random misfires on cylinders, cracked exhaust manifolds, and valve cover gasket deterioration. These issues can lead to decreased engine performance and increased emissions.
- Throttle Body Issues: Dirty throttle bodies have been reported to cause engine cut-off at stop lights, leading to a frustrating driving experience.
- Valve Cover Gasket Deterioration: This issue can cause oil to leak into plug sockets, fouling the spark plugs and leading to engine misfires.
- Electrical Issues: The aux power outlet and interior lights have been known to stop working, causing inconvenience and potential safety issues.
These problems can be frustrating for Isuzu Ascender owners, but it's important to note that not all vehicles will experience these issues. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these problems early on. Additionally, it's always a good idea to consult with a certified mechanic or dealership for specific concerns or repairs.

Positive 2003 Isuzu Ascender car reviews
-
We purchased this vehicle to use as a tow vehicle. We considered a Yukon as an alternative and found this to be more cost-effective. I found Isuzu's styling to be better than both the Trailblazer or Envoy. We opted for the V8 and it rides far better than the 6 cylinder. We are averaging 18 MPG with a considerable amount of city driving. We found this vehicle to be about $4,000 less than a comparable Trailblazer and about $6,000 less than an Envoy. Isuzu offers double the standard warranty of Chevy or GMC. We have the limited edition with every option. The Bose stereo is great.
-
So far I have 600 miles on my Isuzu Ascender and I love it! The ride is very smooth, quiet, and comfortable inside.
-
It's been great!
-
If you're in need of a spacious SUV that can comfortably transport 7 adults while providing a luxurious ride, then the Ascender is the perfect choice for you. The exterior and interior designs are both impressive and well-defined. This SUV is equipped with everything you need, except for brewing your morning coffee. Additionally, the Ascender boasts great mileage, with an average of 18.5 in city driving. The warranties offered on the Ascender are also better than those of almost all other large SUVs.
-
We've only put 500 miles on our Isuzu so far, but it feels like a quality piece of work. Everything about this vehicle is smooth and quiet, and the ride is great.

I purchased Ascender in February 2003 and unfortunately, I have had to take it to the shop at least 6-8 times since then. The air conditioning odors were so bad that I could not sit in the car until we blew out the system with all the windows down. Although the car was repaired in October 2003, it still has an unpleasant smell. Additionally, I have noticed that many interior parts are of inferior quality. For instance, the gear shifter came off in my hand, the steering wheel whines, and plastic compartments won't shut/open properly. The radio/CD player has been replaced once, and parts have been ordered again for a repair. The car also makes an unpleasant rusty, screechy sound that the mechanics can't seem to find. However, anyone riding in or near the car can hear us coming!
Ervin Jacobs 2024-04-26
This is definitely a fantastic deal! The LS comes with so many great features that I would never have expected to get at such a great price of 25k and a low interest rate. While the interior could use some sprucing up, the Ascender is perfect for my active family and meets all of our requirements. It's not a very common SUV on the road, and my wife is often asked about it. It's very similar to the Envoy, but at a lower cost and with a more appealing exterior.
Bertram Moore 2024-02-02
Isuzu offers an extended warranty, which is a great benefit. However, we have experienced several electrical problems with our vehicle. Although these issues are not identical in three or more cases, we cannot say that they fall under the lemon laws of our state. Unfortunately, we consider our car to be a lemon. Additionally, the front passenger seat is quite uncomfortable, and we have only been able to achieve a maximum gas mileage of 17mpg. Furthermore, some exterior pieces are made of plastic and are easily damaged. Within six months of purchasing the vehicle, we began to hear squeaks that sound like loose hinges. Therefore, we do not recommend purchasing an Isuzu Ascender if you are looking for a reliable vehicle.
