infiniti logo

The Infiniti Q50 is a compact executive car manufactured by Nissan for its luxury brand, Infiniti. Replacing the G/Q40 sedan, it debuted at the 2013 North American International Auto Show and went on sale in North America in the third quarter 2013 and in Europe in fourth quarter 2013. It is the export model of the Japanese domestic market's V37 Nissan Skyline.

The design of the Q50 continues to follow the designs first shown by the 2009 Infiniti Essence concept and the production 2011 Infiniti M. The Q50 is also the first instance of a hybrid model in Infiniti's entry-level model but was later removed for the 2019 model year.

First generation

Q50 sedan (2013–)

The design was based on Infiniti Essence (crescent-cut C-pillar, deep body section, asymmetrical cabin layout, interior finishes) and Infiniti Etherea (headlights, three-dimensional double-arch grille, interior finishes). The production Q50 design was frozen in June 2011, after being designed by Joel Baek under Shiro Nakamura.

The Q50 sedan was unveiled at the 2013 North American International Auto Show, followed by the 2013 Canadian International AutoShow, 2013 Geneva Motor Show (with Hybrid and 2.2d), 2013 Dubai International Motor Show, Auto Guangzhou Motor Show in China (with 2.0-liter (214PS) turbocharged engine from Daimler AG (Mercedes-Benz)), and Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong.

Early US and Canada models include 3.7-liter V6 (333PS), 3.5-liter Hybrid (364 PS), each in a choice of rear-wheel drive or Intelligent All-Wheel Drive and in a selection of trim levels, including Sport models.

US models went on sale in August 2013.

Early Canadian models include 3.7-liter V6 (Q50 RWD, Q50 Sport RWD, Q50 Premium AWD, Q50 Premium AWD Navi, Q50 Premium AWD Navi and Deluxe Touring and Tech, Q50 Sport AWD, Q50 Sport AWD Deluxe Touring and Tech) and 3.5-liter Hybrid (Q50 Hybrid Premium RWD, Q50 Hybrid Premium AWD, Q50 Hybrid Sport AWD).

The early European models included 2.2d and hybrid. Infiniti's 2.0 RWD (211 PS) model was added in 2014.

In China the 2014 Q50 3.7L was sold as an imported vehicle until production in China could begin. The 2.0 RWD (211 PS) model and the Q50 Hybrid also joined the line up.

Middle East models was set to go on sale in spring 2014 as 2014 model year vehicles. Early models include 3.7-liter V6 and 3.5-liter Hybrid, both in rear-wheel drive.

Australian models went on sale in February 2014, launching with the 2.2d diesel and 3.5 gasoline hybrid models.

Hong Kong models went on sale as 2014 model year vehicles.

AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-26
  • VIN: JN1CV7AR9HM
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: The seat belt light went on without a passenger and the dealer decided to perform a zero point reset on the passenger seat and that resulted in a failure and now the airbag light is on. This causes the passenger airbag to not be operational. Before it was just the seat belt. They are now asking for $8000+ to replace the seat and OCS module and they said that they would cut the price by 50% but that is still $4000. The seat belt is covered by 10 year warranty but the airbag is covered only 7 year. I feel that since the seat belt was the iniial problem that it should all be covered under the warranty. Searching online there are numerous other Infiniti owners are having the same issue with the passenger seat and they are all being told that the seat needs to be replaced. This looks to be like a fauly module issue and thiink that Infiniti should be responsible for the fix. This has been happening with models from 2014-2018 two different series of Q50 models. THIS CAUSES THE PASSENGER AIRBAG TO BE NON OPERATIONAL AND FEEL THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF Q50 and other models on the road that are NO LONGER SAFE TO DRIVE!!!!

AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-28
  • VIN: JN1CV7AR9HM
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS
  • Summary: I took the car into the dealership to diagnose the reason that I was getting a Seat Belt light and they said that the guide suggested to do a zero point reset on the seat. When they attempted this they said that it failed and now the system has an airbag light on. There is no more seat belt light on now for the passanger side, but there is a hard error code for the airbag system on the passenger side. The Dealership now says the cost to repair is over $8500 when the car is only valued at $10000. I saw that there was a voluntary recall on a 2016 edition and it said that if the zero point reset should fail then the OCS module needs to be replaced, but now they are saying tha the OCS module and Seat need to be replaced. This looks to be like an issue with the model itself. The reason this is a safety issue, is that now the airbags will not work on the passenger side. This is caused by the zero point procedure that Infiniti has instructed their techs to do. I believe they are causing issues and had this not been needed then I would not have had an airbag issue. If there was an airbag issue before this procedure then the symbol was not correct and was false. It was a safety issue since the Passenger side airbag will not deploy in this case.

This issue seems to be a common defect in sunroofs for Infiniti. I've had it repaired, but the problem persists. I have to park it in the garage but I'm not able to when I'm at work.

  • VIN: JN1EV7APXHM

They told me the entire seat/airbag structure needed to be replaced at a cost of $6k-$13k. I searched the problem online and there is the exact recall for this car/problem but not my vehicle. I don’t feel like I should be responsible for a safety issue in a 7 year old car. I believe this model should be included in the recall. I also am requesting the $246 be refunded.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-30
  • VIN: JN1FV7AP8HM
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine in this car needs to be replaced. The main bearing is failing, head gasket blew, and coolant has leaked into the engine. About August 30, 2023 I had a sudden coolant loss followed by temperature spike. If the engine had seized while driving, it could have caused a loss of power and locked up the drive train. After sitting while i tried to determine the coolant loss and temp spike, i made arrangements with a local infiniti dealer about jan 9 with a drop off date of jan 22 or 23. The dealer has confirmed the bearing, oil, coolant issue. There were no warning lights or check engine lights before the issue occurred.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-29
  • VIN: JN1EV7AR2HM
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: My vehicle's windshield washer sensor has malfunctioned as it regularly flashes a warning light indicating low washer fluid regardless of the actual washer fluid reservoir level. The persistent warning light on the dash is a constant distraction to the driver. Furthermore, a driver may become ambivalent to the warning light if another system actually malfunctions (or in the case of the washer reservoir actually being low or empty) thus creating a real safety threat. Infiniti vehicle forums as well as my independent mechanic note this problem to be fairly widespread and, according to my mechanic, is also prevalent in certain Nissan models. I brought this matter to the attention of Infiniti's Customer Care team but no action was taken to remedy the situation nor does it seem any action will be forthcoming. While this may seem to be a relatively small issue, such small issues can still result in significant negative outcomes if not addressed. Given the regularity in which this issue occurs, the manufacturer should be responsible for repairing this defect.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-26
  • VIN: JN1FV7AP4HM
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I have repeated incidents of the car losing power while driving. The first time this happened was in 2018. Under the manufacture warranty both air sensors were replaced. The incident occured again in 2021. I had it towed to a dealership in Jacksonville. They were unable to repeat the failure. In 2022 it occured again. I drove the car to a Nissan dealership in Brunswick Ga. They reset some codes and the car drove ok. Today while driving I lost power again. I pulled into a parking lot and turned the car off. Once I restarted the car it drove ok. This has also occured on other occasions and seem to self correct if the car is turned off and restarted. There is no rhyme or reason to when this problem will present itself and could cause severe harm if driving in heavy traffic on the interstate.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-03
  • VIN: JN1EV7AP0HM

  • Summary: The car needed new sprockets after 105K miles. I haven't seen anyone else have this problem, so my car maybe a lemon. But just in case more people start reporting it, I just want to make sure it's on record. The dealership has no idea why they'd fail, as I have had regular, full synthetic oil changes. It's a hefty repair.

Negative 2017 Infiniti Q50 car reviews

  1. Alexandro Jakubowski 2024-11-19

I can definitely see that you appreciate the car's body style and rims, which are both very nice. However, it seems that the car lacks functionality as it has limited options despite having two screens. The drive selector also seems to be a bit of a hassle, with no noticeable difference between the different modes. I understand how frustrating this can be.

  2. Travon Dooley 2024-11-04

Although the car looks nice and has some promising features, my personal experience with the Q50 2.0T was not great. I may have had high expectations due to my positive experience with my previous Hyundai Azera, which I loved and had no issues with. Unfortunately, the Q50 2.0T had a fume smell in the car for the first 4 months, but it was eventually fixed. Additionally, the cooling fan would run loudly after shutting off the car, which was a bit disruptive to my neighborhood. The screens would also go blank randomly while driving, and the passenger and driver windows would go down slowly and make noise. Overall, I believe Infiniti could learn a lot from Hyundai on how to build more reliable and consistent cars.

  3. Aron Keebler 2024-10-10

    If you're 6'0

  4. Tristin Blick 2024-07-08

I purchased my car last March and was promised free oil changes for a year. However, when I went in for my oil change last weekend, I was informed that I would have to pay. I explained that I was promised free oil changes for a year, but they told me it was either free oil changes for a year or three times. Unfortunately, the salesman did not inform me of this. Additionally, I am disappointed to report that my car's tires are already bald with only 20,000 miles on them, despite taking the car in for rotation during every scheduled maintenance period. I was not aware that I would need new tires so soon, and this has left me feeling frustrated. The dealership informed me that everyone needs new tires between 20,000 to 25,000 miles, which is disappointing considering the amount of money I spent on this luxury car. I wanted to share my experience to inform others that the dealership does not stand behind their cars when it comes to tires. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sorry to hear about your experience with the Infiniti. It seems like the engine issue is a known problem with the 3.0tt. Unfortunately, the dealer couldn't warranty the engine since you were just 150 miles past your 70,000 warranty. The cost of replacing the engine is quite high at $13,000. It's understandable that you prefer Audi's customer service. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

I traded in my 2010 G37s coupe. I love the Q50 - it's more comfortable than the coupe, but still sporty.

The dealership deserves credit for their recommendations that keep your vehicle running like new.

Don’t get me wrong, for the price, it’s a great car. It rides great and the speakers bump, especially with an added sub. I love the ride height. Although it could be a little faster, I’m still super happy with it. I’m a bit bummed that I didn’t get the 3.0t with double the horsepower, but overall, this car is still super quick.

This has been a wonderful car! It's comfortable, very reliable, and as fast as ever needed. Plus, it's relatively cheap to maintain. I do have to disagree with the 'professional reviews' - those people have not lived with it. While the Bose system is a bit average and there are no Car Play upgrades, the map update was a bit costly and a negative. The only other negative I will say is that Infiniti has not updated the model - they succeeded with a winner and yet let it age and fall behind. However, I still highly recommend this car!
