2018 Infiniti Q50 problems
The Infiniti Q50 is a compact executive car manufactured by Nissan for its luxury brand, Infiniti. Replacing the G/Q40 sedan, it debuted at the 2013 North American International Auto Show and went on sale in North America in the third quarter 2013 and in Europe in fourth quarter 2013. It is the export model of the Japanese domestic market's V37 Nissan Skyline.
The design of the Q50 continues to follow the designs first shown by the 2009 Infiniti Essence concept and the production 2011 Infiniti M. The Q50 is also the first instance of a hybrid model in Infiniti's entry-level model but was later removed for the 2019 model year.
First generation
Q50 sedan (2013–)
The design was based on Infiniti Essence (crescent-cut C-pillar, deep body section, asymmetrical cabin layout, interior finishes) and Infiniti Etherea (headlights, three-dimensional double-arch grille, interior finishes). The production Q50 design was frozen in June 2011, after being designed by Joel Baek under Shiro Nakamura.
The Q50 sedan was unveiled at the 2013 North American International Auto Show, followed by the 2013 Canadian International AutoShow, 2013 Geneva Motor Show (with Hybrid and 2.2d), 2013 Dubai International Motor Show, Auto Guangzhou Motor Show in China (with 2.0-liter (214PS) turbocharged engine from Daimler AG (Mercedes-Benz)), and Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong.
Early US and Canada models include 3.7-liter V6 (333PS), 3.5-liter Hybrid (364 PS), each in a choice of rear-wheel drive or Intelligent All-Wheel Drive and in a selection of trim levels, including Sport models.
US models went on sale in August 2013.
Early Canadian models include 3.7-liter V6 (Q50 RWD, Q50 Sport RWD, Q50 Premium AWD, Q50 Premium AWD Navi, Q50 Premium AWD Navi and Deluxe Touring and Tech, Q50 Sport AWD, Q50 Sport AWD Deluxe Touring and Tech) and 3.5-liter Hybrid (Q50 Hybrid Premium RWD, Q50 Hybrid Premium AWD, Q50 Hybrid Sport AWD).
The early European models included 2.2d and hybrid. Infiniti's 2.0 RWD (211 PS) model was added in 2014.
In China the 2014 Q50 3.7L was sold as an imported vehicle until production in China could begin. The 2.0 RWD (211 PS) model and the Q50 Hybrid also joined the line up.
Middle East models was set to go on sale in spring 2014 as 2014 model year vehicles. Early models include 3.7-liter V6 and 3.5-liter Hybrid, both in rear-wheel drive.
Australian models went on sale in February 2014, launching with the 2.2d diesel and 3.5 gasoline hybrid models.
Hong Kong models went on sale as 2014 model year vehicles.

Common 2018 Infiniti Q50 problems
The Infiniti Q50 is a luxury sports sedan that has been a popular choice among car enthusiasts since its introduction in 2014. However, like any vehicle, drivers have reported some common Infiniti Q50 issues. Here are some of the most common problems that owners of the Infiniti Q50 have reported:
- Steering Wheel Lock Failure: One of the most commonly reported problems with the Infiniti Q50 is a failure of the steering wheel lock mechanism. This problem typically occurs when the car is parked, and the driver attempts to start the engine. In some cases, the steering wheel lock may become stuck, preventing the car from starting. This can be a frustrating and potentially dangerous problem, as it can leave drivers stranded without warning.
- Fuel Pump Failure: Another one of the most common Infiniti Q50 issues is fuel pump failure. This can cause the engine to stall or not start at all, leaving drivers stranded on the side of the road. In some cases, the fuel pump may need to be replaced entirely, which can be a costly repair.
- Transmission Issues: Infiniti Q50 transmission issues are some of the top reported problems by owners. Some drivers have reported a delay in acceleration or shifting, while others have reported a loud clunking noise when shifting gears. In some cases, the transmission may need to be replaced entirely.
- Air Conditioning Problems: Some Q50 owners have reported problems with the car’s air conditioning system. The most common issue is a lack of cold air, even when the air conditioning is turned on. This can be especially frustrating during hot summer months when drivers rely on their air conditioning to keep them comfortable.
- Electrical Problems: Many owners have reported various electrical problems with the Infiniti Q50. These issues can range from minor problems like a malfunctioning dashboard display to more serious issues like a complete electrical failure. In some cases, these problems can be caused by a faulty alternator or battery, which can be replaced relatively easily.
- Braking System Issues: Another one of the top Infiniti Q50 problems that owners have reported is related to the car’s braking system. This can include problems with the brake pads, rotors, or calipers. In some cases, the brakes may squeak or grind when applied, which can be a sign of worn brake pads or rotors. In more severe cases, the brakes may fail entirely, which can be a significant safety hazard.
- Engine Problems: Finally, some Infiniti Q50 owners have reported various engine problems with their cars. These can include issues with the engine’s sensors, oil leaks, or misfiring cylinders. In some cases, these problems can be caused by a lack of regular maintenance, such as failing to change the oil or air filter regularly.
Despite these common problems, the Infiniti Q50 can provide drivers with a thrilling and reliable driving experience for many years to come. If you are considering purchasing a Q50, it is important to be aware of these potential issues and to work with a reputable dealership or mechanic to ensure that your car is in good condition before you buy it.

STEERING,POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
- VIN: JN1EV7AR5JM
- Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: I was driving down the highway and my car started to shut down and started to make a knocking sound inside the engine bay, putting at risk other drivers, so i turned on my hazards and pulled to the shoulder of the road, the car wouldn’t turn on so i called a tow truck. Took the car to dealer and stated engine is seized
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-21
- VIN: JN1EV7AP2JM
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I was in my car waiting my for complex security gate to open when I heard a loud noise. I got out of my car to see what it was and turns out my sunroof exploded. For no reason. No rock or item hit my car nor was the car in motion. It was also not from the heat as it was 60 degrees outside. I called my warranty and they refuse to cover it because it is glass. I am reading many others with this same issue. How does a 6 year old car have the sunroof explode??
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-16
- VIN: JN1EV7AR6JM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEATS
- Summary: The airbag passenger light is illuminated causing air bag system to remain off until resolve. The vehicle was taken in for inspection and dealer confirmed diagnostic results found Occupant sensor malfunctioning. Under warranty, the sensor was covered, but after installation the system also found that wasn’t the only thing to replace. It’s a handful of sensors and harness that is integrated within the seat frame with the ONLY solution to replace the entire chair/seat frame. This item does not fall under warranty. My concern is the safety of my family riding in the vehicle. This issue was happening to 2016 and 2017 models that were recalled for the same issue. Unfortunately this vehicle may have been manufactured in 2017, but holds the 2018 year on paper found through carmax.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-01
- VIN: JN1EV7AR6JM
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The Air bag system on a 2018 Infiniti Q50 AWD is malfunctioning. I’d like to get it checked out especially if this could be a tentative recall issue for myself and other owners of the same vehicle. I feel very unsafe for my family and I because the system was never tampered with, yet the light used to go away randomly. Currently, the light is permanently on, and passenger airbag light states the system is off from deploying in case of an accident. This would mean that I would be driving at a risk of airbags being non-deployable and that is truly unsafe. This problem was not addressed with a dealer or any other service center. The vehicle has never been inspected yet, but it is a concern that I’d like to move forward on. The passenger airbag light is illuminated on my dashboard as well as the light depicting that the system is off. I recently bought this car July 2022 and within six months from purchase the light started coming on randomly and disappearing. Now it is permanently on.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-21
- VIN: JN1EV7AR6JM
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I went to Evo Motors to find a car and found a car filled out an application and had to return to the next day because they were closing There was already talk about a down payment but no credit transaction was happening yet. I didn’t even have an offer on the credit yet so I came back the following day and on the way there I got a phone call that the bank was requesting a down payment in the amount of $4500. The salesperson was requesting cash downpayment and I thought that was strange since that was a lot of cash to have on hand. Me and girlfriend had a decent score to acquire the car but the dealer insisted on the cash downpayment and told us the bank was requested the down payment in order to get the car. I was very uncomfortable but I needed the car as I had lost my previous car in an accident and I needed to get to work and was in a rental car. I demand my down payment back in the amount of $4500 plus interest and keep the car as the transaction was unconscionable. They took advantage of my position in the basic necessities and livelihood as I needed to keep working to survive. The added burden was that I had to call friends and family all day long to come up with a downpayment I didn’t have and I had to pay everyone back in a short time. I was so stressed that I got sick and have still not recovered from the transaction that took place that has led to the moment where it was not fair to extort funds I did not have to further benefit them even after had already enriched themselves with the sale of a vehicle that had a very high-interest rate for our credit profile. It’s obvious they had complete control over every aspect of this contract.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-21
- VIN: JN1FV7AP9JM
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My coolant reservoir kept on going empty, I took to dealer for service they replaced the radiator fan module and told me my engine was not porous. I was driving and my engine ended up stalling, turned off while I was driving in the freeway at a high speed cause me to almost lose control of my vehicle because everything stopped working. It looks like an inner rod failed possibly because of the coolant going into engine.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-18
- VIN: JN1EV7AP9JM
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: 2/1/2023 we took our 2018 Q50 to the Infiniti dealership and service center. The engine was having issues, increased RPMs while simultaneously experiencing loss of power/stalling. This was experienced by both my wife and I. Infiniti's determination was the Mass Air Flow Sensor and told us the issue was not covered by the platinum, bumper to bumper extended warranty they sold us due to the warranty only covering mechanical issues, not electrical. The service tech was able to get costs waived as factory warranty covered such events to 75k miles. We picked the car up on 2/8/2023. On 3/18/2023 the car was again towed to the dealership. The intermittent issue that was thought to be the Mas Air Flow Sensor and electrical, hit suddenly and with such force the car would not run whatsoever and stalled out on a very busy 50 MPH Parkway and my wife had to maneuver her way to safety with cars flying all around her. No obvious sign of electrical mass failure, lights still on, etc. On 3/24/2023 I received a call and was told the engine needed to be replaced, the cost was $32k, and that the warranty’s fine print says that the warranty will only cover up to the fair market value of the car, which they determined to be about $21k. I’m responsible for their faulty engine & poor mechanical workmanship? I was sent pictures of debris and springs sitting in the bottom of the dropped oil pan and a separate photo clearly showing a disintegrating cam shaft / lower engine area adjacent to the oil pan. Catastrophic and very avoidable failure (this is not an engine in a military vehicle or motorsports vehicle). I believe the problem was never the Mass Airflow Sensor, it was the alloys used in this area of the engine that were failing. This failure is not the first for Infiniti (have been reading forums)
ENGINE PROBLEM

AT FIRST, THE BATTERY LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER, FOLLOWED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. WHITE SMOKE BEGAN TO COME FROM THE ENGINE. THANKFULLY, I WAS NEARBY MY HOUSE AND MADE IT THERE SAFELY. FURTHERMORE, THE ENGINE OVERHEATED DUE TO A COOLANT HOSE BEING KNOCKED OFF BY THE SHREDDED BELT. ADDITIONALLY, THE WATER PUMP AND A/C COMPRESSOR FAILED. THE PULLEY TENSIONER ASSEMBLY AND BELT WERE REPLACED UNDER MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY, ALONG WITH THE AFOREMENTIONED FAILED COMPONENTS. ALL WORK WAS DONE AT GRUBBS INFINITI OF GRAPEVINE, TX AND THE REPAIR TOOK EXACTLY THREE WEEKS TO FIX. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 28,660. I WAS INFORMED THAT IF I HADN'T HAD THIS ISSUE FIXED BEFORE MY DRIVE BACK TO TEXAS, MY DRIVE BELT COULD HAVE SHREDDED. AFTER THE DEALER ADDRESSED THE CONCERN NO FURTHER NOISE WAS HEARD AT ALL. THE DEALER ALSO INFORMED ME THAT THIS ISSUE IS KNOWN AND HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED IN INFINITI SERVICE BULLETINS. ALTHOUGH, THIS POSES A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN AS THE VEHICLE COULD HAVE STALLED AT HIGH SPEED RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT AND OR LOSS OF LIFE. I WORRY THIS ISSUE WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. TWO TIMES, TWO MANY!

- VIN: JN1FV7AR8JM
- Components: WHEELS,ENGINE
- Summary: WHILE I WAS DRIVING MY INFINITI ON THE HIGHWAY MY SERPENTINE BELT SNAPPED 4 DIFFERENT TIMES WHILE IN MOTION. ALL WITHIN ONE YEAR. INCLUDING ME GETTING MY CAR BACK FROM THE DEALER AND THEM LETTING ME HAVE IT BACK THAT WAY. ALSO, THE TIRES ARE HORRENDOUS, FROM DAY ONE, THEY PULLED THE CAR LEFT OR RIGHT ON THE CAR. ALL THE SETTINGS WERE CORRECT ON THE CAR. I WANTED TO HAVE THE TIRES REPLACED, BY THE MANUFACTURER, AND THAT CAN BE DONE BECAUSE NO IT'S TO LONG AND EVERYONE TOOK TO LONG TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN. NOT TO MENTION DUNLOP IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET A HOLD OF.
WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-01-08
- VIN: JN1EV7AR4JM
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: RUN FLAT TIRES WENT FLAT ON A POTHOLE THAT WAS NOT EVEN REALIZED ON A SUNDAY WITH NO SERVICE STATION OPEN. EVEN IF THEY WERE, THE TIRE HAS TO BE REPLACED, CANNOT BE REPAIRED. THERE IS NO SPARE TIRE OPTION- WHEN CONTACTED, COMPANY REFUSED " NOT POSSIBLE". THIS IS NOT SAFE AT ALL AND MUST BE ADDRESSED. MUST HAVE SPARE TIRE ESP SINCE RUN FLAT TIRES CANNOT BE REPAIRED AND ARE NOT IN STOCK AT MOST SERVICE STATIONS
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-10-26
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: THIS WAS A RENTAL VEHICLE, NOT MY PERSONAL VEHICLE, BUT IS APPLICABLE TO MULTIPLE BRANDS AND MODELS. THE SAFETY ISSUE IS DUE TO THE HEADLIGHT MODES. THE DEFAULT MODE IS OFF, YET THE DRL'S REMAIN ON. THESE ARE BRIGHT ENOUGH THAT YOU CAN DRIVE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT AND NOT REALIZE THAT YOUR ACTUAL HEADLIGHTS ARE OFF, WHICH MEANS THAT THE TAIL LIGHTS ARE OFF. I HAVE BEEN SEEING SEVERAL VEHICLES EVERY DAY WITH PEOPLE DRIVING WITH NO LIGHTS ON, EVEN IN POOR VISIBILITY. THE DEFAULT SHOULD BE FOR THE HEADLIGHTS TO BE IN AUTO MODE OR DRL'S MUST BE OFF WHEN YOU SELECT OFF. I HAVE BEEN SURPRISED SEVERAL TIMES THIS FALL BY DRIVERS DRIVING EXCESSIVELY SLOW WITH THEIR LIGHTS OFF ON THE HIGHWAY IN THE RAIN AT NIGHT. YOU CANNOT SEE THEM TILL YOU ARE VERY CLOSE. ALL OF THEM HAVE THESE NEW LED DRL'S ON AT THE TIME. THIS IS A UNIVERSAL ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. IT SHOWS A VERY BASIC LACK OF THOUGHT TO DESIGN HEADLIGHTS IN THIS WAY AND IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE IN MY OPINION.
WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-12-01
- VIN: JN1EV7AR4JM
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: CAR COMES WITH 19"RIMS AND RUN FLAT TIRES (BRIDGESTONE DRIVE GUARD). SINCE LEASOING THE CAR IN NOVEMBER 2018, I HAVE RECEIVED 8 FLAT TIRES ALL FROM "POTHOLES" THAT RIPPED THE SIDE WALL. CONSUMER AFFAIRS SAYS THIS TIRE SHOULD NOT BE ON THIS CAR IN CERTAIN STATES IN THIS CASE NEW YORK. INFINITI DEALERS DO NOT OFFER AN OPTION AND THE UNSUSPECTING CONSUMER IS LEFT WITH A HAZARDOUS SITUATION. YOUR EYES CAN LEAVE THE ROAD AS YOU SEARCH FOR EVEN SMALL POTHOLES TO AVOID. WHEN THE TIRE DOES GO FLAT AND YOU ARE MORE THAN 25-50 MILES AWAY FROM A REPAIR SHOP YOU ARE IN DANGER OF BEING STRANDED. I WAS STRANDED IN A SNOWY WOODED AREA AND HAD TO DRIVE 25 MILES IN TREACHEROUS CONDITIONS WITH A CHILD IN THE CAR JUST TO FIND A REPLACEMENT. THE TIRE SHOULD NOT BE ON A CAR WITH A HEAVY FRONT END PER THE TIRE DEALER AND TIRE REPAIR SHOP. INFINITI KNOWS THIS AND WILL OFFER TO PAY FOR A NEW TIRE, RATHER THAN PUTTING CUSTOMER SAFETY FIRST AND DISCONTINUING THIS TIRE/RIM IN NY STATE. IN SEVERAL INSTANCES THE POT HOLE HIT WAS LESS THAN THE WIDTH OF THE TIRE.

Incorrect Fuel Pump Control Module (FPCM) software may allow the fuel level in the main tank to be too low to supply fuel to the engine, causing the engine to stall while driving.
- Consequence: An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Nissan will notify owners, and Infiniti dealers will reprogram the Fuel Pump Control Module (FPCM) with corrected software, free of charge. The recall began August 29, 2017. Owners may contact Infiniti customer service at 1-800-662-6200.

The car has impressive specs and an excellent engine. Although it is advertised as having 300HP, it feels more potent, which may be due to the high torque at low RPMs. However, the steering is a major issue, and the run flat tires (rated 2.5 stars on TireRack) only make matters worse. I had to change the tires at 6K miles, which is the first time I've ever done so before the tires wore out. The steering lacks a center, causing the car to veer left and right on the highway, even when the steering wheel is not moving. Despite the good interior and exterior, I'm not enjoying driving this car. I plan to trade it in for a Genesis G70 when it becomes available. I have decided not to purchase any more Infiniti cars in the future.

I recently purchased a new 2018 Red sport, but unfortunately, the lower touch screen malfunctioned just two days after the purchase. I took it back to the dealer and was informed that I needed a new DCU (the lower screen). Although I was initially told it would take 5 days to fix, it ended up taking much longer. After a month had passed, I still had no car and no idea when I would get it back. While I have been frustrated with the situation, I understand that these things can happen. However, I have had some difficulty getting in touch with Infiniti customer care and have not received the level of service I was hoping for. Despite this, I still believe that the car itself is fantastic in terms of its look, power, and handling. Although I have had some issues with the electronics, I am hopeful that these can be resolved. Overall, I am still happy with my purchase and look forward to enjoying my car once it is back on the road.

I can definitely see that you appreciate the car's body style and rims, which are both very nice. However, it seems that the car lacks functionality as it has limited options despite having two screens. The drive selector also seems to be a bit of a hassle, with no noticeable difference between the different modes. I understand how frustrating this can be.

The engine started to fail after putting 40,000 miles on it, burning a lot of coolant. The local Infiniti dealer confirmed that this is a known issue for the 3.0tt, along with having a porous block. Unfortunately, the dealer would not warranty the engine since I was 150 miles past my 70,000 warranty. The cost to replace the engine was quoted at $13,000, which is quite expensive. It's disappointing that Infiniti doesn't seem to prioritize its customers as much as other companies. While the car is fun, it may not be the best choice for true car enthusiasts unless you enjoy gimmicky features. Personally, I prefer Audi and their exceptional customer service.
