Infiniti Q50 problems

The Infiniti Q50 is a compact executive car manufactured by Nissan for its luxury brand, Infiniti. Replacing the G/Q40 sedan, it debuted at the 2013 North American International Auto Show and went on sale in North America in the third quarter 2013 and in Europe in fourth quarter 2013. It is the export model of the Japanese domestic market's V37 Nissan Skyline.
The design of the Q50 continues to follow the designs first shown by the 2009 Infiniti Essence concept and the production 2011 Infiniti M. The Q50 is also the first instance of a hybrid model in Infiniti's entry-level model but was later removed for the 2019 model year.
First generation
Q50 sedan (2013–)
The design was based on Infiniti Essence (crescent-cut C-pillar, deep body section, asymmetrical cabin layout, interior finishes) and Infiniti Etherea (headlights, three-dimensional double-arch grille, interior finishes). The production Q50 design was frozen in June 2011, after being designed by Joel Baek under Shiro Nakamura.
The Q50 sedan was unveiled at the 2013 North American International Auto Show, followed by the 2013 Canadian International AutoShow, 2013 Geneva Motor Show (with Hybrid and 2.2d), 2013 Dubai International Motor Show, Auto Guangzhou Motor Show in China (with 2.0-liter (214PS) turbocharged engine from Daimler AG (Mercedes-Benz)), and Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong.
Early US and Canada models include 3.7-liter V6 (333PS), 3.5-liter Hybrid (364 PS), each in a choice of rear-wheel drive or Intelligent All-Wheel Drive and in a selection of trim levels, including Sport models.
US models went on sale in August 2013.
Early Canadian models include 3.7-liter V6 (Q50 RWD, Q50 Sport RWD, Q50 Premium AWD, Q50 Premium AWD Navi, Q50 Premium AWD Navi and Deluxe Touring and Tech, Q50 Sport AWD, Q50 Sport AWD Deluxe Touring and Tech) and 3.5-liter Hybrid (Q50 Hybrid Premium RWD, Q50 Hybrid Premium AWD, Q50 Hybrid Sport AWD).
The early European models included 2.2d and hybrid. Infiniti's 2.0 RWD (211 PS) model was added in 2014.
In China the 2014 Q50 3.7L was sold as an imported vehicle until production in China could begin. The 2.0 RWD (211 PS) model and the Q50 Hybrid also joined the line up.
Middle East models was set to go on sale in spring 2014 as 2014 model year vehicles. Early models include 3.7-liter V6 and 3.5-liter Hybrid, both in rear-wheel drive.
Australian models went on sale in February 2014, launching with the 2.2d diesel and 3.5 gasoline hybrid models.
Hong Kong models went on sale as 2014 model year vehicles.

Common Infiniti Q50 problems
The Infiniti Q50 is a luxury sports sedan that has been praised for its powerful engine, upmarket cabin quality, and smooth performance:
- Brake Master Cylinder and Pump Seal Failure: This issue can cause a soft or spongy brake pedal, which can be dangerous, especially in emergency situations. The brake master cylinder and pump seal may need to be replaced to fix this problem.
- Premature Brake Wear: Some owners have reported that their Q50's brakes wear out too quickly, which can be expensive to replace. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including driving habits, brake pad quality, and vehicle condition.
- Tires Wear Out Too Quickly: Infiniti Q50 owners have reported that their tires wear out too quickly, especially if they are driven aggressively or frequently on rough roads. Choosing a higher-quality tire brand and performing regular maintenance, such as wheel alignments and tire pressure checks, can help extend the life of the tires.
- Engine Seizure: In some cases, Infiniti Q50 owners have reported that their engine has seized up, which can be caused by low oil levels or other mechanical issues. This problem can be expensive to repair and may require complete engine replacement.
- Won't Start: Some owners have reported that their Q50 won't start, which can be caused by a variety of issues, including a weak or dead battery, corrosion on the battery contacts, or a failed starter motor.
- Car Running Hot: Overheating can be caused by a variety of factors, including low coolant levels, a malfunctioning thermostat, or a seized engine. Regular maintenance and monitoring of the vehicle's temperature gauge can help prevent this problem.
- Steering Problems: Several owners have reported that their power assist system malfunctioned, which can make the car difficult to steer or cause it to pull to one side. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn steering components, low power steering fluid, or a malfunctioning steering control unit.
- Transmission Problems: Some owners have reported that their Q50's transmission slips, shifts roughly, or fails to shift at all. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn transmission components, low transmission fluid, or a malfunctioning transmission control module.
- Airbag Failures: Recalls for airbag issues are one of the most common problems in Infinitis, along with transmission problems. Faulty airbags can fail to deploy in a crash, which can increase the risk of injury or death.
- Brake Problems: Some owners have reported that their Q50's brakes feel spongy, pulsate, or make grinding noises. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn brake pads, contaminated brake fluid, or a malfunctioning brake booster.
It's important to note that not all Infiniti Q50s will experience these problems, and many owners have reported positive experiences with the vehicle. However, being aware of these common issues can help owners take preventative measures and address any problems that may arise.

Infiniti Q50 2015
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-23
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-23
- VIN: JN1BV7AP5FM
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Upon driving when purchased the Engine Light for the Air Bags illuminated. Upon researching the issue the problem seems to be a common problem for vehicles of this make and problem. 90% of the time requiring the owner to take the vehicle to the dealership.Since it is a trend and ongoing I wanted to report the issue.
Infiniti Q50 2017
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-26
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-08
- VIN: JN1CV7AR9HM
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
- Summary: The seat belt light went on without a passenger and the dealer decided to perform a zero point reset on the passenger seat and that resulted in a failure and now the airbag light is on. This causes the passenger airbag to not be operational. Before it was just the seat belt. They are now asking for $8000+ to replace the seat and OCS module and they said that they would cut the price by 50% but that is still $4000. The seat belt is covered by 10 year warranty but the airbag is covered only 7 year. I feel that since the seat belt was the iniial problem that it should all be covered under the warranty. Searching online there are numerous other Infiniti owners are having the same issue with the passenger seat and they are all being told that the seat needs to be replaced. This looks to be like a fauly module issue and thiink that Infiniti should be responsible for the fix. This has been happening with models from 2014-2018 two different series of Q50 models. THIS CAUSES THE PASSENGER AIRBAG TO BE NON OPERATIONAL AND FEEL THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF Q50 and other models on the road that are NO LONGER SAFE TO DRIVE!!!!

- Summary: I was in a car accident during the summer, I was driving at speed limit when I came out the curve the car started sliding, and I went off the road and roll over at 4 times and ended up in a ditch upside in some water, but NO AIRBAGS went off I have pictures showing so, I try to tell the dealer I bought it from Car Max and even my insurance but no one seem to care but now I found this page. I also had a police on site and no ticket was issued to me since no proof of me driving recklessly I did have a police report but I can’t find it since it was back in the summer
Infiniti Q50 2016
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-13
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-21
- VIN: JN1FV7AP5GM
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The car has only 50,000 miles and the valve body of the car just burnt out. I’ve done all the mandatory/ recommended maintenance and with the history of the brand I expected better quality of their product. Would greatly appreciate the accountability on this issue and some effort to fix this for the population.
Infiniti Q50 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-02
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-12
- VIN: JN1BV7AP9EM
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: The transmission Valve Assembly Control Module and Vehicle Speed Sensors have both failed. The car will not shift out of 2nd gear and cannot go faster than 40 mph. This is a safety issue. I had my car inspected by a certified mechanic and he diagnosed the problem. He also stated that that he has seen this a lot with Infinitis. I have maintained my car well but this is Not a maintenance issue. There are thousands of infiniti owners online stating that they had the exact same problem. I filed a case with Infiniti #52260861. This is a design flaw with All Infiniti cars and SUV's and it should be a Recall or at a minimum fixed for free by Infiniti. It cost me $3,500 to have my car fixed and this should be paid by Infiniti to me and all other Infiniti owners with this same problem.
Infiniti Q50 2017
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-28
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-11
- VIN: JN1CV7AR9HM
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS
- Summary: I took the car into the dealership to diagnose the reason that I was getting a Seat Belt light and they said that the guide suggested to do a zero point reset on the seat. When they attempted this they said that it failed and now the system has an airbag light on. There is no more seat belt light on now for the passanger side, but there is a hard error code for the airbag system on the passenger side. The Dealership now says the cost to repair is over $8500 when the car is only valued at $10000. I saw that there was a voluntary recall on a 2016 edition and it said that if the zero point reset should fail then the OCS module needs to be replaced, but now they are saying tha the OCS module and Seat need to be replaced. This looks to be like an issue with the model itself. The reason this is a safety issue, is that now the airbags will not work on the passenger side. This is caused by the zero point procedure that Infiniti has instructed their techs to do. I believe they are causing issues and had this not been needed then I would not have had an airbag issue. If there was an airbag issue before this procedure then the symbol was not correct and was false. It was a safety issue since the Passenger side airbag will not deploy in this case.

Vehicle year: 2017
I've had the car for about 2 months and I must say, it's been a great experience so far. I previously owned a G37 IPL and I will mostly compare this car to that and the other two cars I cross-shopped this with, the BMW 440iGC/340i and Lexus GS350 F Sport. While it may not feel as sporty as the IPL, it's definitely faster and the acceleration is really good. I mainly drive on the highway and it's really useful for when you have to speed up to change lanes. The car looks great and the interior is comfortable with a good amount of space. It also has all the new technology and even gets pretty good gas mileage if you don't mash the pedal. From what I've read, the 400HP ranking is actually underrated. In conclusion, I would highly recommend this car as it offers great value for the money and has exceeded my expectations.

Update 10/31/22- Hi there! I just wanted to share that I'm still absolutely loving my Q50! After owning my 2013 G37 for almost 9 years, it was starting to show its age. Although it still ran like brand new, the white bumpers were peeling and becoming discolored. But now that I have my Q50, it feels like a whole new world! The Q50 is so much quieter and refined, and I'm really enjoying the ride. The only thing I've noticed is that the Dunlop runflats can be a bit rough when it's cold in the morning. But the steering is so light that I can easily turn the wheel with just my pinky! I do miss the exhaust sound from my old car, but this one is still great. And even though Infiniti may not be leading the pack in terms of tech, I'm still blown away by all the new options I have in my car. Unfortunately, there are no ventilated seats, but at least heated seats are offered. And the best part? Auto remote start is standard, so I don't have to pay for an aftermarket upgrade. Overall, I think the Q50 is an amazing value for the price, and I highly recommend taking one for a test drive and adding it to your short list. It's definitely a winner in my book!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the Q50. I've owned a few luxury cars in the past, including the 2017 Q50, which was a nice car. While the technology wasn't as advanced as Lexus or Acura, the car itself outperformed them easily. I've also owned a 3 Series BMW, which was a great ride, but way too overpriced and had a weaker engine compared to the Q50. Recently, I upgraded to the 2020 Q50S and it's fantastic! The technology has been upgraded and the response is quick and accurate. The 16 speaker Bose is also astounding. While Lexus always wins on interior detail, the Q50 is a great choice if you're looking for a great engine, smooth transmission, and an overall comfortable ride. Acura is too conservative for my taste and reminds me too much of a Honda. Although I had a 1992 Acura Legend which rates as one of my best overall cars I ever owned. You can't go wrong with a Q50 if you want a great drive. It all depends on what you're looking for. I've had my Q50 for over a year now and it's still performing at the same high level. No issues and still fun to drive. Thanks for reading!

The Q50 Red Sport is such a joy to drive! The highlight of this car is definitely the 3.0 L twin turbo engine, which provides an exhilarating experience. The 7-speed automatic transmission does its job very well, with smooth and quick shifts. While the infotainment system may not be the best, it is still simple and user-friendly. I personally love the look of this car, especially in iridium blue. The red brake calipers and gunmetal 19-inch Infinity wheels that come standard with the Red Sport really make it stand out. Overall, I absolutely love driving this car every day!

Vehicle year: 2019
So, I've been driving this car since 2018. It's a Red Sport, so the horsepower and pick up are fantastic. I've put 70,000 miles on it and haven't had any brake work, engine, transmission, or mechanical problems of any kind - just regular oil changes. I'm surprised that the reviews aren't more positive, because this car is wonderful. I hope they keep making them!

The engine remains great, but Infiniti has reprogrammed the transmission to shift into higher gears at slower speeds. This results in being in 5th gear at 30 MPH, which may be an attempt to maximize fuel economy. However, it can also make the power plant feel sluggish. The transmission can be harsh on downshifts from 5th to 4th and 4th to 3rd. Unfortunately, some options that were available in the 2016 model are not offered in similar packages in the 2019 model, such as the power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, Bose audio, and memory driver's seat. On the bright side, the 2019 model has a better backup camera and a more detailed Nav screen. The two-screen setup remains the same. While it can be frustrating to drive in town due to the reprogrammed transmission, it is still a fun car to drive on the open road.

I have been leasing cars for about 20 years and unfortunately, this will be my first and last Infiniti. Although I have leased high-end vehicles before, I am disappointed with the quality of parts on this car. Despite driving normally and expecting standard wear and tear, I had to change my run-flat tires, front brake pads, rotors, and have the back rotors cut, all before reaching 23k miles, which is unheard of! It was a terrible experience. When I tried to contact Infiniti to complain, they put the blame on me and my driving pattern, which I found unfair. If it was my driving pattern, why did I not have to maintain my previous leased cars in the same way? Overall, I am disappointed that no one reimbursed me for the expenses. I noticed something was wrong with the brakes when the car started shaking, and the dealership confirmed that I needed new brakes. I will be going back to Honda/Acura in a few months.

As a six-time Infiniti owner, I recently leased a fully loaded 2014 Q50S. While the car is attractive, well-designed, and performs well, I have experienced some issues. The noise level inside the car is quite high, and the factory-supplied run-flat tires are noisy and prone to blowouts (I've had four in two years). Additionally, the passenger seat rattles, and the backup and front cameras have long delays. Despite logging complaints with Infiniti and taking the car to the dealer, these issues have not been resolved. Currently, my car has been in the shop for five weeks due to brake pedal issues, and there are also known issues with the airbag system. While I cannot recommend this car, I still have faith in Infiniti and their dealer network. I hope they can address these issues and improve their customer service. Thank you for considering my experience.

The car's acceleration and braking are inconsistent, making it difficult to drive. The standard transmission mode is the most reliable and user-friendly, while the sport mode is highly unpredictable and practically unusable. The transmission shifts too aggressively, making it challenging to maintain a constant speed. However, the direct adaptive steering is a standout feature, particularly in heavy/quick mode. Although the car has some minor software issues, such as the dash screen and top screen remembering your last settings but the bottom screen not doing so, these are not major problems. Overall, I would not recommend buying this car due to its unpredictable acceleration and braking, which is consistent with many car reviews. If you are considering this car, I suggest taking it for a weekend demo to see if it meets your needs.
