Infiniti Q50 problems

infiniti logo

The Infiniti Q50 is a compact executive car manufactured by Nissan for its luxury brand, Infiniti. Replacing the G/Q40 sedan, it debuted at the 2013 North American International Auto Show and went on sale in North America in the third quarter 2013 and in Europe in fourth quarter 2013. It is the export model of the Japanese domestic market's V37 Nissan Skyline.

The design of the Q50 continues to follow the designs first shown by the 2009 Infiniti Essence concept and the production 2011 Infiniti M. The Q50 is also the first instance of a hybrid model in Infiniti's entry-level model but was later removed for the 2019 model year.

First generation

Q50 sedan (2013–)

The design was based on Infiniti Essence (crescent-cut C-pillar, deep body section, asymmetrical cabin layout, interior finishes) and Infiniti Etherea (headlights, three-dimensional double-arch grille, interior finishes). The production Q50 design was frozen in June 2011, after being designed by Joel Baek under Shiro Nakamura.

The Q50 sedan was unveiled at the 2013 North American International Auto Show, followed by the 2013 Canadian International AutoShow, 2013 Geneva Motor Show (with Hybrid and 2.2d), 2013 Dubai International Motor Show, Auto Guangzhou Motor Show in China (with 2.0-liter (214PS) turbocharged engine from Daimler AG (Mercedes-Benz)), and Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong.

Early US and Canada models include 3.7-liter V6 (333PS), 3.5-liter Hybrid (364 PS), each in a choice of rear-wheel drive or Intelligent All-Wheel Drive and in a selection of trim levels, including Sport models.

US models went on sale in August 2013.

Early Canadian models include 3.7-liter V6 (Q50 RWD, Q50 Sport RWD, Q50 Premium AWD, Q50 Premium AWD Navi, Q50 Premium AWD Navi and Deluxe Touring and Tech, Q50 Sport AWD, Q50 Sport AWD Deluxe Touring and Tech) and 3.5-liter Hybrid (Q50 Hybrid Premium RWD, Q50 Hybrid Premium AWD, Q50 Hybrid Sport AWD).

The early European models included 2.2d and hybrid. Infiniti's 2.0 RWD (211 PS) model was added in 2014.

In China the 2014 Q50 3.7L was sold as an imported vehicle until production in China could begin. The 2.0 RWD (211 PS) model and the Q50 Hybrid also joined the line up.

Middle East models was set to go on sale in spring 2014 as 2014 model year vehicles. Early models include 3.7-liter V6 and 3.5-liter Hybrid, both in rear-wheel drive.

Australian models went on sale in February 2014, launching with the 2.2d diesel and 3.5 gasoline hybrid models.

Hong Kong models went on sale as 2014 model year vehicles.

Common Infiniti Q50 problems

The Infiniti Q50 is a luxury sports sedan that has been praised for its powerful engine, upmarket cabin quality, and smooth performance:

  • Brake Master Cylinder and Pump Seal Failure: This issue can cause a soft or spongy brake pedal, which can be dangerous, especially in emergency situations. The brake master cylinder and pump seal may need to be replaced to fix this problem.
  • Premature Brake Wear: Some owners have reported that their Q50's brakes wear out too quickly, which can be expensive to replace. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including driving habits, brake pad quality, and vehicle condition.
  • Tires Wear Out Too Quickly: Infiniti Q50 owners have reported that their tires wear out too quickly, especially if they are driven aggressively or frequently on rough roads. Choosing a higher-quality tire brand and performing regular maintenance, such as wheel alignments and tire pressure checks, can help extend the life of the tires.
  • Engine Seizure: In some cases, Infiniti Q50 owners have reported that their engine has seized up, which can be caused by low oil levels or other mechanical issues. This problem can be expensive to repair and may require complete engine replacement.
  • Won't Start: Some owners have reported that their Q50 won't start, which can be caused by a variety of issues, including a weak or dead battery, corrosion on the battery contacts, or a failed starter motor.
  • Car Running Hot: Overheating can be caused by a variety of factors, including low coolant levels, a malfunctioning thermostat, or a seized engine. Regular maintenance and monitoring of the vehicle's temperature gauge can help prevent this problem.
  • Steering Problems: Several owners have reported that their power assist system malfunctioned, which can make the car difficult to steer or cause it to pull to one side. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn steering components, low power steering fluid, or a malfunctioning steering control unit.
  • Transmission Problems: Some owners have reported that their Q50's transmission slips, shifts roughly, or fails to shift at all. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn transmission components, low transmission fluid, or a malfunctioning transmission control module.
  • Airbag Failures: Recalls for airbag issues are one of the most common problems in Infinitis, along with transmission problems. Faulty airbags can fail to deploy in a crash, which can increase the risk of injury or death.
  • Brake Problems: Some owners have reported that their Q50's brakes feel spongy, pulsate, or make grinding noises. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn brake pads, contaminated brake fluid, or a malfunctioning brake booster.

It's important to note that not all Infiniti Q50s will experience these problems, and many owners have reported positive experiences with the vehicle. However, being aware of these common issues can help owners take preventative measures and address any problems that may arise.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-23
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-23
  • VIN: JN1BV7AP5FM
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Upon driving when purchased the Engine Light for the Air Bags illuminated. Upon researching the issue the problem seems to be a common problem for vehicles of this make and problem. 90% of the time requiring the owner to take the vehicle to the dealership.Since it is a trend and ongoing I wanted to report the issue.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-26
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-08
  • VIN: JN1CV7AR9HM
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: The seat belt light went on without a passenger and the dealer decided to perform a zero point reset on the passenger seat and that resulted in a failure and now the airbag light is on. This causes the passenger airbag to not be operational. Before it was just the seat belt. They are now asking for $8000+ to replace the seat and OCS module and they said that they would cut the price by 50% but that is still $4000. The seat belt is covered by 10 year warranty but the airbag is covered only 7 year. I feel that since the seat belt was the iniial problem that it should all be covered under the warranty. Searching online there are numerous other Infiniti owners are having the same issue with the passenger seat and they are all being told that the seat needs to be replaced. This looks to be like a fauly module issue and thiink that Infiniti should be responsible for the fix. This has been happening with models from 2014-2018 two different series of Q50 models. THIS CAUSES THE PASSENGER AIRBAG TO BE NON OPERATIONAL AND FEEL THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF Q50 and other models on the road that are NO LONGER SAFE TO DRIVE!!!!

  • Summary: I was in a car accident during the summer, I was driving at speed limit when I came out the curve the car started sliding, and I went off the road and roll over at 4 times and ended up in a ditch upside in some water, but NO AIRBAGS went off I have pictures showing so, I try to tell the dealer I bought it from Car Max and even my insurance but no one seem to care but now I found this page. I also had a police on site and no ticket was issued to me since no proof of me driving recklessly I did have a police report but I can’t find it since it was back in the summer

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-13
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-21
  • VIN: JN1FV7AP5GM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The car has only 50,000 miles and the valve body of the car just burnt out. I’ve done all the mandatory/ recommended maintenance and with the history of the brand I expected better quality of their product. Would greatly appreciate the accountability on this issue and some effort to fix this for the population.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-02
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-12
  • VIN: JN1BV7AP9EM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: The transmission Valve Assembly Control Module and Vehicle Speed Sensors have both failed. The car will not shift out of 2nd gear and cannot go faster than 40 mph. This is a safety issue. I had my car inspected by a certified mechanic and he diagnosed the problem. He also stated that that he has seen this a lot with Infinitis. I have maintained my car well but this is Not a maintenance issue. There are thousands of infiniti owners online stating that they had the exact same problem. I filed a case with Infiniti #52260861. This is a design flaw with All Infiniti cars and SUV's and it should be a Recall or at a minimum fixed for free by Infiniti. It cost me $3,500 to have my car fixed and this should be paid by Infiniti to me and all other Infiniti owners with this same problem.
Infiniti Q50 2017
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-28
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-11
  • VIN: JN1CV7AR9HM
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SEATS
  • Summary: I took the car into the dealership to diagnose the reason that I was getting a Seat Belt light and they said that the guide suggested to do a zero point reset on the seat. When they attempted this they said that it failed and now the system has an airbag light on. There is no more seat belt light on now for the passanger side, but there is a hard error code for the airbag system on the passenger side. The Dealership now says the cost to repair is over $8500 when the car is only valued at $10000. I saw that there was a voluntary recall on a 2016 edition and it said that if the zero point reset should fail then the OCS module needs to be replaced, but now they are saying tha the OCS module and Seat need to be replaced. This looks to be like an issue with the model itself. The reason this is a safety issue, is that now the airbags will not work on the passenger side. This is caused by the zero point procedure that Infiniti has instructed their techs to do. I believe they are causing issues and had this not been needed then I would not have had an airbag issue. If there was an airbag issue before this procedure then the symbol was not correct and was false. It was a safety issue since the Passenger side airbag will not deploy in this case.

Latest negative Infiniti Q50 car reviews

  1. Bo Larson 2025-04-21

    Vehicle year: 2015

I purchased a 2015 Q50 Premium just over two months ago with a little over 28,500 miles on the clock. The car was still under the original manufacturer warranty for another 11 months or up to 60,000 miles. Before purchasing, I took the car for a test drive and checked the carfax report, which showed that a previous Infiniti dealer had completed a CPO inspection at 28,038 miles and sold it as a CPO. Unfortunately, with less than 500 miles under my possession, the car experienced catalytic converter problems, but Infiniti took care of it. However, a week ago, the engine started hesitating and the low oil pressure light came on. I had to get the car on a flatbed and take it to the dealer, where I was informed that the car needs a new engine. Infiniti refused to cover the repairs required due to oil sludge inside the engine, claiming that the car was not properly serviced. The car has only done 28,768 miles. I am now in the process of finding all service records from the previous owner to go back to Infiniti and dispute their claims. I did find that many others had similar problems with sludge buildup in their Infinitis. Some of them were covered by warranty only after a lawyer got involved. So, if you are thinking of buying a used Infiniti, think again or at least demand all service records, even if the car has very few miles on it.

  2. Deonte Will 2025-03-24

    Vehicle year: 2015

I chose the Q50 over the BMW because I could get a V-6 for the same price as the BMW 4-Cyl. turbo. While the acceleration is fun, the car does not grip the road like a BMW and the handling can be a bit squirrelly. Additionally, I have experienced a strange ping sound when backing out of a parking space with the Q50. Despite bringing it to the dealer 6 times, they have been unable to fix it, even after replacing the steering column. Another issue I have encountered is that the center console is too small for my iPhone 6+. Overall, my relationship with the Q50 is a bit of a love/hate one.

  3. Paolo VonRueden 2025-03-17

    Vehicle year: 2014

I've been the proud owner of this car for almost two years now. While the power is outstanding, I've noticed that the ride can be a little rough at times. However, the interior is nice and the BOSE sound system is outstanding. I find the seat comfort and room to be just fine, even at 6'1

  4. Lucio Breitenberg 2025-02-09

    Vehicle year: 2014

The car looks great and has a strong engine. The interior is comfortable, especially on road trips. However, I have experienced some disappointment with the car overall and have buyer's remorse. Unfortunately, the inTouch electronics have been buggy, slow, or just plain don't work. The dealer has been really nice, but they can't change the poor quality and design of the manufacturer's electronics. I have a complaint logged with Infiniti Consumer Affairs, and they were also really nice, but unwilling to do anything about the problems I've had. I've had the car for about a year and a half, and it has been in the shop cumulatively for almost a month. After today, when several functions of the car electronics disappeared, I now have to schedule it into the shop again. This has been a frustrating experience, especially since I have never had problems like this with any car I've ever owned. This is my second Infiniti, but I'm not sure if I will purchase another one in the future.

**UPDATE SINCE LAST REVIEW - July 2019.** The car unfortunately experienced a catastrophic engine failure at 31,792 miles. While driving, the car did not warn me of any engine codes or issues, which put me in a dangerous situation. However, I am currently working with Infiniti Consumer Affairs to resolve the issue and will keep this review updated. On a positive note, the car has excellent acceleration from 0MPH. However, I have noticed that when in traffic or at slower speeds, the car can be slow to respond to demanded power due to the downshifting and turbo charging. This may be due to the car mostly relying on turbo power when in motion or decelerating, which can cause a lag issue. Additionally, the MPG is lower than the advertised values, with an average of 17.3 MPG for my 65% city and 35% highway driving. While some people are impressed with the technology offered by this car, I personally find it to be redundant and unnecessary, with buggy systems that contradict each other. For example, there is no way to set a specific app or app function, as it resets each time the vehicle is started. The Infiniti drive mode selection is also not in harmony with the other drive mode selection that is selected separately, with no alignment between the two. Lastly, the depreciation rate of these cars is unfortunately one of the worst for Japanese cars. The rear view camera software has been freezing quite often, but the unit has been replaced twice to fix the issue. The system also resets occasionally, sometimes even while driving. The electronic clock may not be to everyone's liking, especially for those who appreciate good clock workmanship from Infiniti, but it's not a big deal. Despite these minor issues, the car still offers a smooth and comfortable ride.

I leased a new Q50 when it first came out three years ago. Although the car had some issues, most notably with the computer, I decided to give the Q50 another try when my lease was up. I am happy to report that I absolutely love my new Q50! All the computer issues have been resolved and I don't notice any of the issues I had with my last one. Despite the engine being a bit smaller, the turbo gives the car plenty of power. It also handles like a dream, and the sports seats provide great support. I am particularly impressed with all the technology, and I can't imagine owning a car without the surround view cameras after having two Q50s. Best of all, the dealers were incredibly accommodating over Labor Day weekend, and I was able to lease my new car for over $10k below sticker (with the only upfront payment on my part being the customary drive offs). I highly recommend this car!

Let's start with the good! This car has awesome looks - the styling is sexy as hell, and the black paint is like a mirror. The rims and tires are very appealing and performance-oriented. Safety features are also a plus - I really appreciate the all-around vehicle backup cameras and collision avoidance system, which helps me avoid rear-ending anyone. There's even a button to push in case of a crash that will connect you with a live INFINITI operator. The black interior is so well done with real leather all over, and the sunroof really adds to the fun. Even guys like me who are 6ft 1 inch and 280 pounds can easily drive all day in this car. The 14-speaker Bose system is so clear and powerful, and I'm very proud to be booming this system. The sound the turbo makes is fun and exhilarating, and there's plenty of power with 300 hp. I've taken the car up to 140, and that seems to be about it for top speed - but it was a blast! Handling is also a dream - you can drive this car fast around a corner, and it will control your braking and gas to make the smoothest turn. The brakes are super strong and very impressive. Plus, the trunk is huge - I think I could fit a small elephant in there! Now, onto the not-so-good. I'm not a fan of the navigation system - it's too complicated for me to use. It also doesn't have Apple Play or Android Play, so I end up using my phone for directions and playing music via Bluetooth. It would be much easier to touch a screen to go to Pandora, Amazon Music, or Apple Music. The transmission switch for ice, economy, standard, sport, and sport plus doesn't remember your choice when you restart the car, so every time I get in the car, I have to select economy - and I hate that. Finally, I've noticed some Bluetooth connection issues - it has issues the first minute of start-up. But overall, I love this damn car and will buy another when the lease runs out. The only downside is that some of the instrument panel you can't read unless you really lean over and look around the steering wheel.Hey there! Did you know that it took me a few months to find the cruise control? I had no idea where it was!

Many car reviewers and magazines tend to focus on the road feel and handling of a BMW 3 series, but for most people in the real world, driving on a racetrack or mountain road is not a priority. The Audi A4 is a spacious and powerful car with quality materials and a great fit and finish. While it may not compare to the 3 series, the Q50 is definitely a better car than the 328. The 335 may be a better performance machine, but it sacrifices ride and comfort for performance. If you're looking for a car that strikes a great balance between luxury and sport, without having to spend $50k or more on an Audi S4 or BMW 335i, then this is the best car in its class.

The Q50 Red Sport 400 won me over. After leasing a 2013 Infiniti M37xS, I was looking for a smaller car. I test drove a BMW 340i and Audi S4, both of which I liked for various reasons. However, the Q50 Red Sport sedan, black on black, with only the Premium Plus package and a couple other select options added on to the standard Red Sport goodies, was what I fell in love with. The black with the dark gray 19The drive modes (SNOW, ECO, Standard, Sport, Sport+, Personal) significantly alter the personality of the car. SNOW mode is perfect for driving in deep snow as it locks the car into a 50/50 split and softens torque application. ECO mode is ideal for a more relaxed driving experience and is perfect when driving with elderly relatives. Standard mode is great for general cruising as it softens the suspension, steering, throttle, and shifts. Sport mode makes the suspension stiffer, steering quicker, and everything feel much more aggressive. Sport+ mode is hooligan mode and dials back the traction control. Personal mode allows individual settings for Steering, Suspension, Shifts/Throttle. In all modes except SNOW or ECO, the Red Sport is eager to run. In my limited testing, I've already logged a 4.48s 0-60 run and 12.95 quarter at 109.1mph according to Vbox. The interior is technically impressive with its 2 touch screens and 3rd color screen between the gauges. Although some complain that the InTouch system is difficult to use, I found that after a short time it becomes second nature. The app connectivity is limited to Facebook Check-in and Events, and Google Online Search apps, which is behind the competition. The lack of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is also disappointing. However, the Bluetooth and USB connectivity, the easy-to-use navigation system, and the solid design of the overall interface make it a positive experience. The Bose 14 speaker XM/HD Radio/FM/AM system is impressive and is superior to any of the other Bose systems I've experienced in other Infiniti vehicles. It was also the best audio system of the cars I test drove. Overall, the interior is very comfortable with soft leather and high-quality switchgear everywhere you touch. This Q50 has the G37 character that I felt the 2014 model lacked. It's aggressive and always wants to attack the next straightaway, curve, or onramp. The engine sound is really addictive and it will definitely pin you back in your seat. You should definitely check this one out if you want a true performance sleep that also happens to be a heck of a value.

I used to own a 2006 Infiniti g35x and was initially worried about the acceleration of this new turbo-driven, smaller engine. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the vomit-inducing rocket-like takeoff. The steering may feel a bit wonky at first, but I think I might grow to like it. The brakes don't feel as mind-blowingly amazing as they were on my g35x, but they still feel civilized. The interior is mostly a work of art, and I'm glad they changed the colors away from that gross amber/orange color. However, the dual screens are a bit weird, and I hope there's a way to turn off the GPS screen. It's also strange that you can't change the default driving mode, but these are minor gripes. Overall, this car is a dream, and I could easily live in it!
