1998 Hyundai Sonata problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.

The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.

First generation (Y1; 1985)

The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.

Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.

It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.

The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

Common 1998 Hyundai Sonata problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Hyundai Sonata 1998, several common problems have been reported:

  • Electrical System Concerns: Electrical problems have been a common complaint among Sonata owners, with issues such as fading icons on controls, touch-point wear, and electronics not aging gracefully. Maintaining the touch-points in the car is essential for hygiene and clarity, especially considering constant use. Furthermore, electronic control for basic functions can sometimes present challenges, and ensuring that any replacements or changes in the electrical system are properly addressed is crucial for optimal performance.
  • Safety Recalls: Sonata owners have raised concerns about safety-related issues, including problems with the airbag system, ABS warning lamp, brake calipers, and steering assist. These safety recalls highlight critical components that, if not functioning correctly, could pose significant risks to the driver and passengers. Addressing these safety concerns promptly and ensuring that any recalls are addressed by authorized service centers is vital for the safety of the vehicle occupants.
  • Transmission Problems: Complaints have been made regarding transmission issues, particularly related to failed speed sensors in the transmission leading to the transmission not shifting correctly. Addressing transmission problems promptly and seeking assistance from qualified auto repair shops or dealers is essential to prevent further damage and ensure the vehicle's optimal performance.

These common problems reported by Hyundai Sonata 1998 owners underscore the importance of regular maintenance, timely repairs, and adherence to manufacturer recommendations to ensure the longevity and safety of the vehicle.

What is the common problem of Hyundai Sonata?

Old and new Sonata model years had similar issues with their timing chain tensioner, which produced rattling noises upon engine startup. Many owners also reported a broken timing belt, which damaged the crankshaft position sensor.

What was a bad year for Hyundai Sonata?

A Hyundai Sonata engine failure lawsuit accuses Hyundai of manufacturing defective engines in model year 2011-2012 Sonatas. The plaintiff alleges Hyundai knew when the connecting rod bearings start to fail, metal debris from the bearings is sent throughout the engine through contaminated engine oil.

What year did Hyundai Sonata have engine problems?

2011-2014

Hyundai Sonata Engine Failure Lawsuit. Our attorneys filed a federal class action lawsuit on behalf of 2011-2014 model year Hyundai Sonata owners whose vehicles suffered premature and catastrophic engine failures.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-08-14
  • VIN: KMHCF24F0WA
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
  • Summary: I BOUGHT MY HYUNDAI IN 2004. MY 1998 HYUNDAI SONATA VEHICLE DRIVER AND PASSENGER INTERIOR PART OF DOORS ARE STUCK. I HAD THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT DOOR REPAIRED THE SAME YEAR. IT STUCK AGAIN IN 2006 AND HAS BEEN THAT WAY TO THIS DAY. MY PROBLEM NOW IS THAT THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR IS NOW STUCK AS OF JULY 10 2010. I CANNOT AFFORD REPAIRS AT THE MOMENT BECAUSE THE CAR JUST CUT OFF WHILE DRIVING FRIDAY, JULY 16, 2010 AND HOPEFULLY I CAN AFFORD THE REPAIRS TO GET IT WORKING AGAIN. I MUST CLIMB OVER THE SEAT TO THE BACK AND GO OUT OF THE REAR PASSENGER DOOR. THE DRIVER SIDE REAR DOOR IS NOT WORKING BECAUSE OF THE LATCH (THEY CONTINUE TO BREAK) AND I HAVE REPLACED ALL OF THEM AT ONE POINT. THEY ARE $25.00 AT THE JAY MARK HYUNDAI. THEY ARE LISTED BELOW: DRIVER SIDE WINDOW IS BROKEN. I WENT DOWN AND NEVER CAME UP AGAIN. I COULD NOT AFFORD REPAIRS THEN AND ASKED THE MECHANIC TO PUSH IT UP AND PUT A SCREW SO THAT IT WOULD NOT COME DOWN AGAIN. THE LATCH HAS BROKEN AND BEEN REPLACED TWICE. THE THIRD TIME I WAS NOT GOING TO BUY ANOTHER LATCH. THE DOOR IS STUCK AND WILL NOT OPEN. THE PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW WILL NOT GO DOWN COMPLETELY. THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT DOOR WILL NOT OPEN IT IS ALSO STUCK AND HAS BEEN FOR YEARS. I HAD IT REPAIRED AND ABOUT A YEAR LATER IT WOULD NO OPEN AGAIN. THE REAR DRIVER WINDOW WILL NOT GO UP AND STAY UP. IT WILL COME DOWN INCH BY INCH UNTIL A CERTAIN POINT AND NOW I CANNOT GET IT TO GO UP AGAIN. THE LATCH IS ALSO BROKEN ON THAT DOOR AS WELL AND I HAD THAT LATCH REPLACED BUT ONLY ONCE. THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM CAUGHT FIRE.THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IS IN DISREPAIR AGAIN BECAUSE THE TAIL LIGHTS WILL WORK FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS AT A TIME AND THEN THEY ARE OUT AGAIN OR IT WILL SHORT OUT THE BULBS AND AT NIGHT I MUST SLIGHTLY TOUCH THE BRAKES WHILE DRIVING TO HAVE THE TAIL LIGHTS AND AVOID A TICKET. BECAUSE OF THE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS THEY CAR WILL NOT PASS INSPECTION. THE SYSTEM IS NEVER READY. THE BATTERY WILL SHORT FROM TIME TO TIME AND I MUST REPLACE. *TR

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-11-28
  • VIN: KMHCF24F5WA
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: CRACK IN GAS TANK DISCOVERED AFTER SEVERAL REMOVALS OF TANK TO REPLACE HOSES, THEN CLAMPS. REPLACED 1998 TANK WITH USED TANK FROM 1996 MODEL. WITHIN 3 MONTH REPLACEMENT TANK WAS LEAKING FROM CRACK IN SAME AREA AS BEFORE. DISCOVERED RECALL ON THIS MODEL AND TOOK VEHICLE TO LOCAL DEALER. DEALER REFUSED TO HONOR RECALL DUE TO SERVICE PERFORMED IN 2006 WHERE THEY (SUPPOSEDLY) ADDED CHECK VALVE TO PREVENT GAS TANK CRACKS FROM DEVELOPING. APPEALS TO REGIONAL AND NATIONAL HYUNDAI OFFICES WERE ALSO REJECTED. DEALER SENT ME AWAY WITH SERIOUSLY LEAKING / DANGEROUS TANK. *TR

RECALL # 00V314001 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY) WAS FOUND. THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS A HOLE IN THE GAS TANK, BUT REFUSED TO REPAIR IT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE CONTACT FELT THEY SHOULD REPLACE THE GAS TANK AS STATED IN THE RECALL. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 117,000.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-07-31
  • VIN: KMHCF24F0WA
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: WE PURCHASED A USED 1998 SONATA GL FOR MY DAUGHTER IN MAY 2006. IN ABOUT JULY 2006 SHE NOTICED THAT SHE SEEMED TO BE USING MORE FUEL THAN USUAL. ALSO THAT HER AND HER FRIENDS NOTICED A STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE. CHECKING UNDER THE VEHICLE I NOTICE THAT THE FUEL TANK WAS WET ON THE DRIVERS SIDE NEAR THE REAR TIRE AND SMELLED OF GASOLINE. WE TOOK THE CAR TO BE REPAIRED. THE MECHANIC UPON REMOVING THE TANK NOTED THAT ON THE TOP LEFT OF THE TANK (IF YOU WERE FACING THE REAR OF THE CAR) HAD BEEN PATCHED PREVIOUSLY WITH SOME KIND OF EPOXY. WE HAVE NO IDEA WHEN THIS REPAIR WAS DONE. HE ATTEMPTED AGAIN TO REPAIR IT WITH EPOXY, THIS WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. HE THEN REPLACED THE TANK WITH A USED FUEL TANK FROM ANOTHER HYUNDAI. THIS WAS ALSO UNSUCCESSFUL. HE THEN WELDED THE SPOT ON THE TANK. THIS WAS ALSO UNSUCCESSFUL AS THE TANK STARTED LEAKING AGAIN FROM THE SAME AREA. WE CHECKED WITH A DEALER AND FOUND THAT THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN IN AND HAD A FUEL LINED OR HOSE REPLACE ON OR ABOUT MARCH 29, 2001. ACCORDING TO THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN 00V314001 A NOTE: THIS WAS SIX YEARS AGO IN 2000-2001. THIS CRACKING AND LEAKING OF FUEL IS STILL AN UNRESOLVED ISSUE AS NOTED IN THE NOTE: WHAT HAS BEEN DONE? WHAT IS THE UPDATE? IT HAS BEEN SIX YEARS. THIS IS A KNOW PROBLEM OF THIS FUEL TANK AND HYUNDAI IS AWARE OF IT. THEY HAVE HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO RESEARCH AND COME UP WITH A SAFE RESOLUTION TO THIS DANGEROUS CRACKING OF THE FUEL TANK. THIS PORTION OF THE CAMPAIGN SHOULD HAVE ALREADY BEEN RESOLVED AND MUST BE SOON. THE FOLLOWING IS THE NOTE FROM CAMPAIGN 00314001: NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER : 00V314001 MAKE / MODELS : MODEL/BUILD YEARS: HYUNDAI / SONATA 1997-1998 **NOTE: THE 1997-1998 SONATA FUEL TANKS HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED CRACKING. HOWEVER, AT THIS TIME, THE CAUSE FOR THE CRACKING HAS NOT BEEN IDENTIFIED. THIS PORTION OF THE CAMPAIGN WILL BEGIN AFTER HYUNDAI HAS DETERMINED THE CAUSE AND CORRECTIVE PROCEDURE. *NM

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-06-01
  • VIN: KMHCF24F3WA
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: MY 1998 HYUNDAI SONATA HAS BEEN A CHALLENGE TO MAINTAIN. TWICE THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR SPRING HAS RUSTED THROUGH AND WINDOW REGULATORS HAVE FAILED. THIS PARTICULAR INCIDENT WAS A FORTUNATE STOP IN THE CAR SHOP TO CHECK SOMETHING ELSE. THEY DISCOVERED THAT THE RACK AND PINION UNIT WAS LEAKING POWER STEERING FLUID. I HAD BEEN COMPLAINING TO THE MECHANIC THAT THE CAR "CLUNKED" IN THE FRONT END GOING OVER A BUMP. THIS DESPITE REPLACING THE BALL JOINTS, STRUTS AND ONE TIE ROD. IT SEEMS THAT THE CLUNKING NOISE MUST HAVE BEEN COMING FROM THE RACK AND PINION. THEY ALSO DISCOVERED AT THE SAME TIME THAT TWO OUT OF FOUR ENGINE MOUNTS WERE CRACKED AND THE OTHER TWO WERE SAGGING. I'LL BE REPLACING THOSE AS WELL AND HOPING THAT THE CAR DOESN'T CAUSE ANY FURTHER PROBLEMS FOR A WHILE. I BELIEVE IN MAINTAINING MY CARS, BUT THIS CAR SEEMS TO HAVE HAD MORE PROBLEMS THAN MOST I HAVE OWNED. THE CAR HAS ALSO OVERHEATED TWICE, ONCE DUE TO A BURST HOSE AND THE SECOND TIME DUE TO A LEAK IN ONE OF THE ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSORS IN THE BLOCK. FOR THE LATTER INCIDENT THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING (GRADUALLY INCREASING OPERATING TEMP OVER TIME). IT ALSO HAS THE HARD DOWN SHIFT FROM 3-2 (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) THAT OTHERS HAVE NOTICED. I WON'T BE PURCHASING A HYUNDAI AGAIN AS I FEEL THAT THIS IS WAY TOO MANY PROBLEMS FOR A CAR WITH ONLY 90,000 MILES ON IT.

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2002-03-25
  • VIN: KMHCF24T5WA
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: MARCH 25, 2002 MY DRIVER SIDE WINDOW WOULD NOT CLOSE. I HAD PURCHASED AN EXTENDED SERVICE CONTRACT WHEN I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE NEW IN 1998. I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL DEALER, BURLINGTON AUTO MART, IN BURLINGTON, NJ, TO BE REPAIRED. I CHECKED MY CONTRACT AND THOUGHT THIS PART, 83403-34011 REGULATOR, WOULD BE COVERED. THEY SAID IT WASN'T. I CONTACTED THE HYUNDAI PROTECTION PLAN ADMINISTRATORS AT HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA IN FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA AND RECEIVED A LETTER FROM DENISE LOWRIE, ADMIN. ASSURANCE PROD. DEPT., THAT SAID IT WASN'T COVERED. I WAS STILL IN THE PROCESS OF TRYING TO GET THIS PROBLEM STRAIGHTENED OUT WHEN ON JULY 19TH MY DRIVER SIDE FRONT WINDOW REGULATOR ALSO BROKE. I SPOKE TO JASON TAYLOR, ANOTHER ADMINISTRATOR IN THE ASSURANCE PROD. DEPT., WHO SAID HE GETS SEVERAL CALLS A WEEK QUESTIONING WHETHER THE WINDOW REGULATORS ON THE 1997 & 1998 SONATAS ARE COVERED UNDER THE PLAN. HE SAID THAT THE PLAN WAS CHANGED IN 1999 AND THE REGULATOR IS NOW CONSIDERED PART OF THE WINDOW MOTOR AND SO IT IS COVERED ON THE 1999 AND NEWER SONATAS. MY EXTENDED CONTRACT STATES THAT THE POWER WINDOW MOTORS AND GEARS ARE COVERED. THE WINDOW REGULATORS ARE NOT MENTIONED UNDER EXCLUSIONS. I DON'T KNOW IF YOU CAN LOOK INTO THIS MATTER, BUT I REALLY FEEL THAT THE REGULATOR PROBLEMS SHOULD BE EXAMINED, AS IT SOUNDS LIKE THERE ARE WAY TOO MANY REGULATORS FAILING IN THE 1997 & 1998 SONATAS.

1998 Hyundai Sonata recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 1998 Hyundai Sonata.

2000-10-02
  • Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: ACCENT GT MODEL VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH DOHC ENGINES MANUFACTURED FROM DECEMBER 19, 1996 THROUGH JUNE 30, 1997; 1998 ACCENT MODEL VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM MAY 6, 1997 THROUGH JUNE 25, 1998; 1997 SONATA VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM AUGUST 1, 1996 THROUGH JULY 9, 1997 AND 1998 SONATA VEHICLES PRODUCED FROM JULY 9, 1997 THROUGH APRIL 24, 1998. THE EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEMS MAY APPLY EXCESSIVE VACUUM TO THE FUEL TANKS DURING THE CANISTER PURGE CYCLE. MINOR FUEL TANK DISTORTION COULD RESULT. A SMALL CRACK COULD DEVELOP ON THE UPPER FUEL TANK SURFACE. THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT WOULD THEN ILLUMINATE AND, IN SOME CASES, THE VEHICLE DRIVER COULD NOTICE A GASOLINE ODOR.
  • Consequence: FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE CAN RESULT IN A FIRE.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL PRESSURE CHECK THE VEHICLE'S FUEL TANK TO DETERMINE IF IT HAS CRACKED. IF IT IS CRACKED, A NEW FUEL TANK WILL BE INSTALLED. A NEW FUEL FILLER CAP THAT DECREASES THE AMOUNT OF VACUUM INSIDE THE FUEL TANK WILL ALSO BE INSTALLED. NOTE: THE 1997-1998 SONATA FUEL TANKS HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED CRACKING. HOWEVER, AT THIS TIME, THE CAUSE FOR THE CRACKING HAS NOT BEEN IDENTIFIED. THIS PORTION OF THE CAMPAIGN WILL BEGIN AFTER HYUNDAI HAS DETERMINED THE CAUSE AND CORRECTIVE PROCEDURE.

Negative 1998 Hyundai Sonata car reviews

  1. Zion Kirlin 2024-11-26

My father-in-law gave me this car with about 100,000 km. Although it's not the nicest car I've ever driven, it has proven to be incredibly reliable. It has never broken down on me, and it starts up in the snow and cold without fail. So far, I've only had to replace a battery, distributor cap, and plugs, which is a testament to its durability. Getting work done on Korean cars in Korea is also very affordable, which is definitely a plus. The only minor issue I've had is with the power door locks, which tend to lock and unlock on their own. To avoid getting locked out, I always make sure to roll down the window before getting out without my keys. With 155,000 km (nearly 100,000 mi.) on it now, I'm confident that this car will continue to serve me well for many more miles.

  2. Darwin Schuster 2024-11-07

I really like this car a lot. I drove it for about a week some time ago and when I heard that it was for sale, I immediately offered to buy it. What left a lasting impression on me about this car was the power of the engine. It really makes the most of its 3.0 V6. I've driven cars with comparable engines, but this one outperforms them by far. The interior is very comfortable and of good quality. Power windows, locks, and a moon roof are all nice features to have. Overall, it's a pretty nice car.

  3. Roy Moore 2024-11-07

I bought this car because it was the only one available that I could afford. Although it has had some issues such as the brakes going out twice, rattling terribly, stalling when the a/c is on (and sometimes when it's not), and the interior fogging up when the heat is on, it is still comfortable and gets good gas mileage. However, I have decided not to buy another Hyundai.

  4. Kennedi Erdman 2024-08-28

I bought this car when it had around 50,000 miles and it performed very well until it reached 90,000 miles. Unfortunately, after that point, everything started falling apart and I ended up spending around $3,000 on repairs. Currently, my transmission only has 3rd gear and I have to redline on a highway at 90mph. I also can't take turns at more than 25mph or it will skid out. In my experience, I wouldn't recommend buying a Hyundai. Personally, I would rather have a Civic than this car.

  5. Bernhard Dietrich 2024-06-22

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Sonata that I purchased brand new. It's a great car with a five-speed and A/C, but no other power options. Unfortunately, I did have to get a new clutch at 97K, but since then, I've had regular maintenance including a timing belt every 60K, a rebuilt starter and alternator, and a new water pump. I did have a bit of trouble with my local dealer when they changed hands - the second timing belt service was quite expensive and they used some non-factory parts. But overall, I've been really happy with my Sonata. Thanks for listening!

Great to hear that you've had a wonderful experience with your vehicle! It's fantastic that you've never had any mechanical or transmission issues, and have only needed to do regular oil changes. It sounds like you're getting great value for your money, almost like driving an Accord for half the cost!

This car is a true survivor! Even after 9 years, it still runs like a dream. I've pushed it to its limits at 190km/h and it's still a blast to drive. Despite being in a front crash at 80km/h, the car took all the impact and I walked away unscathed. Mechanically, it's in excellent condition and performs like a champ. However, there have been some issues with body mouldings rusting inside and swelling, which I've had to replace twice. The door locks also rust and freeze, which can be a bit of a hassle to deal with. Some of the hardware, such as the sunshades and doorknobs, have fallen apart over time. But, I upgraded the stereo to a Hyundai CD combo and the sound quality is far superior. The A/C still works like a charm and keeps me cool on hot days. I did have to rebuild the fuel tank due to rust, and the manual tranny needed to be rebuilt in its 5th year due to noisy wheel bearings. Overall, my experience with this car has been quite positive.

Hi there! I wanted to share that I bought my car back in 2005 and it has only 50,000 km on it. So far, I haven't had any major issues with it, but unfortunately, some of the parts have broken off. :(

This car is amazing! It feels so luxurious and expensive, yet I was able to get it at a great price since I bought it used. I've been driving it from Phoenix to LA and back for the past few years and it has never let me down. It's such a comfortable and safe car, I always feel at ease when I'm behind the wheel. The only minor issues I've had are with the power windows and door locks, but they were easily fixed. The brakes do squeal a bit, but it's a small price to pay for a car that fits me like a glove and that I can always rely on.

I had some issues with my auto transmission. Unfortunately, I did not have the transmission coolant flushed, which caused it to overheat and eventually fail. However, I was able to purchase a new one and it has been running smoothly ever since. Additionally, I experienced a problem with the auto door locks, as they would sometimes lock unexpectedly when I exited the car, leaving my keys inside. On the bright side, the brakes have held up really well and the car provides a comfortable ride even on the worst frost-heaved roads. The only downside has been the cost and availability of parts. Currently, I am in need of a valve cover gasket, but none of the dealers seem to have it in stock.
