The first generation of the BMW 1 Series consists of the BMW E81 (3-door hatchback), BMW E82 (coupe), BMW E87 (5-door hatchback) and BMW E88 (convertible) compact cars. The E81/E82/E87/E88 generation was produced from 2004 until 2013 and is sometimes collectively referred to as the E8x. The E8x replaced the 3 Series Compact as the entry level models of the BMW range.

The chassis has an aluminum multi-link suspension, and a rear-wheel drive layout with a longitudinally-mounted engine giving 50:50 weight balance, which was a rare configuration for a hatchback as most cars in this market segment use front-wheel drive. The engines available were four-cylinder turbo-diesel, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol, six-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol and six-cylinder turbocharged petrol (the latter only available on coupe and convertible models).

The highest performance trim is the 1 Series M Coupé which was powered by the BMW N54 turbocharged inline-six engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission. It was produced in only the coupe body style and is considered the predecessor to the BMW M2.

Following the introduction of the F20/F21 1 Series in 2011, the E81/E87 hatchback models began to be phased out, while the E82/E88 coupes and convertibles remained in production until 2013, when they were replaced by the F22/F23 2 Series models.

Common 2007 Bmw 135i problems

The BMW 135i, produced in 2007, is known for a few common problems, particularly those related to the N54 twin-turbo straight-six engine that powers it. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues and their details:

  • Fuel pump failure: The N54 engine is equipped with a high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) that has been known to fail.
  • Turbocharger issues: The twin-turbo setup in the N54 engine can experience problems, particularly with the turbos' wastegates, which can lead to boost leaks and decreased performance.
  • Cold start shudder: Some 135i owners have reported a cold start shudder, where the engine shakes or shudders during initial startup, particularly in colder weather. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including the fuel system, ignition system, or engine management system.
  • Injector issues: The N54 engine's direct fuel injection system can experience issues with its fuel injectors, leading to poor performance, reduced fuel efficiency, and increased emissions.
  • Engine management system (EMS) issues: The EMS in the N54 engine can sometimes require updates or reflashes to address various software-related issues, such as incorrect fuel trims or ignition timing.
  • Valve cover gasket leaks: The valve cover gaskets on the N54 engine can leak, leading to oil consumption and potential engine damage if not addressed promptly.
  • Rear legroom: While not a mechanical issue, the 135i's compact design can lead to limited rear legroom, which may be a concern for some potential buyers.

While these issues may seem daunting, it's important to note that many of them can be addressed with proper maintenance and repairs. Additionally, the 135i's performance and driving experience are highly regarded, making it a popular choice for enthusiasts despite its known problems.

Are BMW 1 Series cheap to repair?

One of the most prevalent issues with the N54 engine is high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failure. The fuel pump is an essential component for your engine, as it supplies the motor with the necessary fuel to run correctly.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-12-01
  • VIN: WBAVB73577P
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: FUEL PUMP WAS PART OF EARLIER RECALL. THE REPLACE FUEL PUMP WAS GIVEN A 10 YEAR EXTENDED BMW WARRANTY. THIS NEW REPLACED JUST FAILED AND BMW SAID THE WARRANTY WAS ONLY EXTENDED FROM THE YEAR THE VEHICLE WAS MADE AND NOT THE ACTUAL REPLACE NEW FUEL PUMP. A COMPLETE DECEPTIVE MARKETING BY BMW'. I WAS TOLD THE NEW FUEL PUMP WOULD HAVE A 10 YEAR WARRANTY. BUT THAT WAS NOT THE CASE. THE NEW REPLACED FUEL PUMP STOPPED IN TRAFFIC CAUSING SERIOUS ISSUES. LUCKILY NO ACCIDENT.
