1999 Hyundai Tiburon problems
The Hyundai Tiburon (Korean: 현대 티뷰론) known in Europe as the Hyundai Coupé (현대 쿠페) is a sports coupe that was produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai from 1996 to 2008.
The name "Tiburon", a slight variation of "tiburón", the Spanish word for "shark", is the name given to the North American, Australian, New Zealand, South African, and Austrian production of the vehicle. It was known as the Hyundai Coupe in some European markets and Indonesia. It had been branded as the Turbulence (터뷸런스) and Tuscani (투스카니) in the home South Korean market.
The model had been released in two generations (RC) over its lifespan and in that time these generations have been subject to periodic facelifts. These facelifts have attempted to keep the car up to date with various safety improvements and a mixture of changes to exterior and interior styling. The RD Tiburon was in production for 5 years from 1996 to 2001. The GK Tiburon was introduced in 2002 (as a 2003 model) and ended production in 2008 before being replaced by the Hyundai Veloster.

1999 Hyundai Tiburon recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 1999 Hyundai Tiburon.
- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:WEBBING
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE DRIVER AND FRONT PASSENGER SEAT BELTS MAY NOT EXTEND AND RETRACT SMOOTHLY THROUGH THE D-RING GUIDES MOUNTED ON THE BODY PILLARS AFT OF THE DOORS. IF THE SEAT BELTS DO NOT EXTEND AND RETRACT SMOOTHLY, THEY MAY TWIST IN THE D-RING GUIDES AND MAKE IT INCONVENIENT TO EXTEND AND RETRACT THE SEAT BELTS.
- Consequence: IF THE SEAT BELTS ARE INCONVENIENT TO USE, THE SEAT OCCUPANT MAY NOT BE INCLINED TO WEAR THE SEAT BELTS PROPERLY, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A STOPPER OVER EACH FRONT SEAT BELT D-RING GUIDE TO ASSIST THE SEAT BELT TO SMOOTHLY EXTEND AND RETRACT. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN DECEMBER 10, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.
- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE TIRE PRESSURE PLACARD REQUIRED BY FMVSS NO. 110, "TIRE SELECTION AND RIMS," WAS MISPRINTED. IT INCORRECTLY CONTAINS THE TIRE SIZES, SEATING CAPACITY, AND LUGGAGE CAPACITY.
- Consequence: EXCESSIVE LOADING CAN CAUSE TIRE AND VEHICLE DAMAGE THAT COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: OWNERS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH A CORRECT TIRE PRESSURE PLACARD AND INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS.
- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID VALVE SEALS DO NOT REMAIN SUFFICIENTLY ELASTIC, RESULTING IN TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAKAGE. THIS LEAKAGE CAN RESULT IN REDUCED PRESSURE APPLICATION TO THE CLUTCHES, BRAKE, AND KICKDOWN SERVO, ALLOWING THEM TO SLIP.
- Consequence: SUCH SLIPPAGE CAN CAUSE PREMATURE DETERIORATION OF THE FRICTION ELEMENT SURFACES AND COULD CAUSE THE VEHICLE NOT TO ACCELERATE, OR NOT ACCELERATE AS EXPECTED, WHEN THE DRIVER PRESSES THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID VALVE.

I recently had to get rid of this car and I am sad that I did. I had 112,000 miles on the car and it was still running strong. Other than the basic repairs that you have to do to all cars, this one was great and fantastic on gas...I give it a 9.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my 1999 TIB from Hyundai. It's been a blast to drive, but unfortunately, it's time for me to sell it. While it's not the best option for a family car, it's definitely an underrated small sports car. If you're looking for a quick, excellent handling car that turns heads, the TIB should definitely be at the top of your list!

I've only had my car for about a month, but I absolutely love it! And as for the dealer I got it from, thank you so much! I never thought I'd be driving around in a car like this. I went in to look at the little cars, and the rest is history. I know where I'll be going for my next car. Thank you, Hyundai of Henderson LV!

This is such a fun automobile to drive! I have had very few problems (minor things) and have enjoyed it so much. As always, Hyundai loads their cars with extra features at no cost. The handling is great, even in excess of 130 mph, and the braking is incredible too. I can't say enough about this car.

This car is a classic! I'm going to make sure to stick to how it was back in the day. I owned this car when it first came out, and I still do! Back in 1996, the Tiburon was considered very sporty and had a futuristic sleek design that you either loved or hated. It seemed to be split 50/50 back then, but today I get compliments and questions by everyone I meet. I am lucky to own one of the rare FX models with the shark spoiler. Definitely a head turner! This car is just a little toy for me now since I've grown into more expensive vehicles, but the boy in me still loves to hop in and tear it up. What I love most about this car after it being 20 years old now, is the ability to easily diagnose and fix almost any problem cheaply. It's still a solid and reliable car (considering its age), but it's almost fun to do repairs as it doesn't break the bank or take up your weekend. If you can find one of these not needing a new paint job or body work, I highly suggest picking one up as a fun and economical car to enjoy. They just don't make cars like these anymore: Simple, Cheap, and Fun!

I have been driving my car for 5 years now, and it has covered 70k miles. Unfortunately, I have had to spend over 3k on major parts in the last year alone. I had to replace the 5 spd transmission for $1200, water pump twice for $510, struts for $269, alternator for $269, and also had to do exhaust work, replace oxygen sensor for $160, fix AC problems, tail light wiring problems for $200, fix a cracked radiator, headlight wiring problems, and replace half shafts for $300, among other things. However, I must admit that the car was dependable until it reached about 127k.

I purchased this car used in 2000 and owned it for a decade before it began to experience issues at 98k miles. Overall, it's a decent car with good handling that feels a bit sporty. However, it lacks power and acceleration. The horsepower is lower than the listed 130, closer to 113 or possibly even less. When I owned it, I received a notice of a class action lawsuit against Hyundai for misreporting the HP of the FX. It required only one or two major repairs until 98k, when several issues arose at once, costing me $2750. On the plus side, it handles decently in snow and has minimal rust issues. Unfortunately, the gas mileage is poor for a car with such little power, averaging around 25 mpg (half city, half highway).

This car next to me has a new engine, which has been running very well after experiencing some overheating problems with the previous engine. I have noticed some shaking when reaching speeds of 80-90, but it could just be my car. Overall, it is a very fun car to drive. It is important to note that Hyundai used to be one of the cheapest cars on the road, but this car has put good thoughts in my head about their brand. Although the pick-up performance is not the best, the car has a lot of potential. I would recommend a cold air intake to improve the speed. With a little upgrade, this car could be even better.

I bought a Tiburon in 1998 and unfortunately experienced some major issues with the transmission, shift lock override, and other problems (too many to list). I had hoped that Hyundai's great warranty would cover these issues, but unfortunately, I learned my lesson. I will not be purchasing another one.

Hey there! If you happen to live in Georgia, you might want to avoid buying a Hyundai. Unfortunately, they have been known to pass OBD emission tests without actually addressing any issues. Just wanted to give you a heads up!
