1984 Jaguar Xj problems
The Jaguar XJ is a series of mid-size/full-size luxury cars produced by British automobile manufacturer Jaguar Cars (becoming Jaguar Land Rover in 2013) from 1968 to 2019. It was produced across five basic platform generations (debuting in 1968, 1986, 1994, 2003, and 2009) with various updated derivatives of each. From 1970, it was Jaguar's flagship four-door model. The original model was the last Jaguar saloon to have been designed under the leadership of Sir William Lyons, the company's founder, and the model has been featured in countless media and high-profile appearances.
Series 1, 2, and 3 (1968–1992)
Overview
The first generation Jaguar XJ was produced for a total period of 24 years, with two major facelifts – in 1973 and in 1979, with a raised front bumper and less tall grilles.
For four years, the 1968 introduced XJ was always a four-door, straight-six saloon on a 2.76 m (108.75 in) wheelbase. In 1972, a more spacious, 4-inch (10 cm) longer wheelbase (LWB) option, and a 5.3 litre V12 engine were added. On the XJ series II (from 1973), the standard wheelbase (SWB) saloons were cancelled in 1974 – but a SWB two-door (series II only) coupé was sold from 1975–1978.
The 1979 series III saloons received a redesigned greenhouse (upper body) and bumpers. The 6-cylinder series III models were replaced by the second generation Jaguar XJ in 1987, but the V12 models not until 1992.

Common 1984 Jaguar Xj problems
The 1984 Jaguar XJ6 is a classic car that is highly valued for its smooth and relaxing ride, exotic appearance, and comfort. However, like any car, it can have its share of problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by owners:
- Front Shocks: Front shocks were another issue that needed to be replaced when the car was first purchased, costing around $200. This was a simple fix.
- Paint: The paint was a significant issue, with one owner reporting a cost of $2,000 to fix at a shop. Rust at the windows, front and back, was included in the paint price.
- Rack and Pinion Mount: The rack and pinion mount was a problem that was easy to get to and cost around $40 to replace. This was a simple fix.
- Noise from Front Hub: A noise from the front hub was caused by a lack of grease and was an easy fix.
- Ignition: The ignition was a problem when the owner lost their key, costing $20 to replace online.
- Fog Lights: The fog lights had a loose wire that caused them to cut out. This was an easy fix and cost $0 to repair.
- Speedometer: The speedometer was reported to skip, but the cause was unknown, and it was not a frequent issue.
- Wipers: The wipers broke something when changing the ignition, and the owner still needed to find and fix the problem.
- Sunroof: The sunroof stopped working, and the owner suspected a loose wire or switch as the cause.
- Engine Problems: The engine was reported to have problems with starting, running, and idling. These issues were attributed to the car sitting for 10 years and the need for new fluids, filters, plugs, and wires. The injectors were reported to stay wide open and flood the engine when the car died out.
- Undercarriage Rust: Undercarriage rust was a problem on the 1984 Jaguar XJ6 due to a manufacturing problem with the engine blocks on the 1984-1987 6-cylinder cars.
These are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the 1984 Jaguar XJ6. While these issues can be frustrating, many of them are relatively simple to fix and do not detract from the overall enjoyment of driving this classic car.
