2003 Buick Century problems
Buick Century is the model name that was used by Buick for a line of upscale full-size cars from 1936 to 1942 and 1954 to 1958, as well as from 1973 to 2005 for mid-size cars.
The first Buick Century debuted as the Series 60 then renamed in 1936 as a shorter and lighter model featuring the same engine as the bigger Roadmaster and Limited series giving it more performance while using the shorter wheelbase body of the Buick Special. During the 1930s and 1940s it was Buick's companion to the top level Roadmaster and was offered as a 2-door and 4-door sedan and convertible. The Century name was used on six generations of cars of varying sizes as well as performance and trim levels. In 1969, Buick developed a concept car known as the Century Cruiser. In the 1970s, the Century Regal became a separate model and market positioning between the two products changed from year to year depending on sales. The Century was updated to front wheel drive in 1982 and was Buick's 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan and station wagon, with regular updates and feature upgrades as customer preferences changed over time.
Series 60 (1930–1935)
Originally, the Series 60 had the 331.4 cu in (5.4 L) OHV Buick Straight-6 engine from the Series 70, developing 99 bhp (74 kW) at 2,800 rpm. It had, at the beginning of the generation, a full-length running board denoting the top model for Buick at the time, shared with the short wheelbase, entry level Series 40. In 1930, GM built 38,180 cars. The bodystyles available were torpedo, sedan, coupe, and roadster convertible, using GM's "B-body" platform. Starting with this generation, all GM cars shared a corporate appearance as a result of the "Art and Colour Section" headed by Harley J. Earl and modest yearly changes were introduced to freshen the appearance.
In 1931, the running board was reduced and the OHV 220.7 cu in (3.6 L) Buick Straight-8 engine was introduced that developed 90 bhp (67 kW). Aesthetically, the Series 60 remained almost unchanged, and the same fact occurred also in the following year. In 1931 and 1932, a total of 55,135 were produced.
In 1933, the length of the body increased and the radiator was now concealed behind a façade with a grille. The engine power increased to 97 hp (72 kW), and 1933 was the first year all GM vehicles were installed with optional vent windows which were initially called “No Draft Individually Controlled Ventilation” later renamed "Ventiplanes". In 1934, the appearance was changed to a more rounded appearance, with a new OHV 278 cu in (4.6 L) eight-cylinder engine and 100 hp. In 1935, the model remained almost unchanged while the body style selections were similar to larger Buicks but more affordably priced. Six choices were available to include both 2- and 4-door convertibles using the term "phaeton" for the 4-door convertible with a listed price of US$1,675 ($37,224 in 2023 dollars ). Total production from 1933 to 1935 was 31,385. In 1936, the model changed its name to "Century".

- Summary: My vehicle was receiving a PA state required annual mechanical safety inspection by an ASE certified mechanic. I was informed that the "sway bar" which stabilizes the steering system had failed, and as a critical part of the steering operation, the vehicle could not pass a PA state mechanical safety inspection. I had the "sway bar" replaced with the GM re-designed part at considerable expense to pass the PA state safety inspection. The ASE certified mechanic advised me that he had replaced many mechanical failures like mine (broken lug ends) before GM changed the design to one that could withstand the application (a solid forging as opposed to a sheet metal fabrication). I wrote to the CEO of Buick/GM (see attached letter) to request an explanation as to why a known safety defect like the "sway bar" was not recalled when it was first discovered, resulting in a re-design of the "sway bar" for subsequent production models. I received a telephone response from the GM Executive Team, who called himself "Debbie", at 1.855.880.1500, extension 5917674, Reference Number [XXX], on 26 July 2023. "Debbie" refused to document GM's position on this issue in writing, and only emphasized that a safety recall with this known safety issue was never issued. It appears that GM has deceived the NTHSA and gotten away with a cover-up. Regardless of the time that GM has kept this hidden from the NHTSA, GM should be required to recall all affected vehicles and repair them at their expense. Thank you. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-01-19
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 2G4WS52J531
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: I HAD DRIVEN MY 2003 BUICK CENTURY AT LEAST HALFWAY INTO A PARKING SPACE IN A PARKING LOT WHEN IT SUDDENLY LURCHED FORWARD LIKE A BAT OUT OF HELL, LEAPING UP OVER A CURB ON AN UPWARD SLOPE, SWIPING A CEMENT LIGHTPOST ON THE LEFT, CRASHING INTO ANOTHER CAR ACROSS ITS LEFT FRONT, BUMPING DOWN OVER A CURB, THEN CRASHING UP AND OVER TWO MORE CURBS. WITH DIVINE HELP I WAS ABLE TO AVOID OTHER CARS AND STEER IT TO A STOP, THEN DRIVE GINGERLY INTO THE ORIGINAL PARKING SPACE. SINCE I WAS ORIGINALLY IN THE PROCESS OF SLOWING TO A STOP, MY RIGHT FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE AT ALL TIMES. I HAD NEVER HEARD OF MANY AUTOMAKERS' INFAMOUS "SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION" MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS HAPPENING AS THE CAR WENT FROM 1 OR 2 MPH TO FULL THROTTLE INSTANTLY. WITH BOTH HANDS GRASPING THE STEERING WHEEL WHILE THE CAR JERKED VIOLENTLY, I WAS UNABLE TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL, AS I WAS ATTEMPTING TO AVOID OTHER PARKED VEHICLES. I EMERGED WITH NO BROKEN BONES, BUT THE CAR WAS TOTALED. BECAUSE I AM A "LITTLE OLD LADY," THE INSURANCE COMPANY DEEMS ME "L00% RESPONSIBLE," IN SPITE OF MY CLEAN DRIVING RECORD. BUT "SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION" FITS MY SCENARIO TO A TEE.

In 2015, I was in desperate need of a car for my two teenage daughters. I found a 2003 Buick Century for $1500, and somehow it became my work car. This car has been the most reliable car I've ever owned, and I'm an expert on used cars. In the time I've owned this car, the only maintenance I've done is the normal oil changes and new tires. It gets the best gas mileage ever at 37 mpg. I would definitely buy another Buick Century!
-
I recently traded in my 1998 Ford Ranger for a Buick Century! The reason for the change was that I travel 178 miles to the VA in Atlanta and needed a more comfortable ride. With my new Century, I definitely got that! I've noticed some people complain about rental cars, but I have no complaints about my new vehicle so far. I just received it, but I'll keep you posted on any further updates...
-
I always loved driving my mother-in-law's Buick, so when the opportunity to purchase one came up I grabbed it. It has an incredibly smooth and powerful ride, which became even more apparent when I rented other cars. The ride and comfort of the Buick surpasses most other cars.
-
After renting a few of these on trips, I realized that I wanted the comfort of a big car without the big price tag. Upon researching the Century, I was impressed with the value it offers. It rides like a dream and I'm getting an impressive 24 mpg in the city [combined driving]. While it may not have the most modern look, I'm already fantasizing about a LeSabre!
-
Great car for the money! You can save over nine thousand dollars off retail price with the rebates and incentives. Although it didn't impress me at first, I have grown to really like it. It's perfect for older people, like my 77-year-old mother who loves it. The gas mileage is very good, and while I wish the doors sounded more solid when they shut, it's a minor issue. The only thing I wish it had were split folding rear seats as standard in this price range.

My family of four recently spent two weeks traveling up and down the mountains of Colorado. Although we enjoyed the remarkable fuel economy of the car (26-28 mpg), we found the car to be underpowered and the seats lacked support. Additionally, the trunk was roomy but poorly shaped. However, we did find that this car is probably better than most of its American competitors and The General has definitely done a great job tuning the transmission/engine combo. If you are looking for a car with more power and support, you may want to invest elsewhere. Overall, we had a good experience with this car and would recommend it to those looking for a reliable option.

I really like the car! It has pretty good gas mileage and while it may not be fancy, it's definitely reliable.
