The Toyota Prius (/ˈpriːəs/ PREE-əss) (Japanese: トヨタ・プリウス, Hepburn: Toyota Puriusu) is a compact/small family liftback (supermini/subcompact sedan until 2003) produced by Toyota. The Prius has a hybrid drivetrain, combined with an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. Initially offered as a four-door sedan, it has been produced only as a five-door liftback since 2003.

The Prius was developed by Toyota to be the "car for the 21st century"; it was the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle, first going on sale in Japan in 1997 at all four Toyota Japan dealership chains, and subsequently introduced worldwide in 2000.

In 2011, Toyota expanded the Prius family to include the Prius v, an MPV, and the Prius c, a subcompact hatchback. The production version of the Prius plug-in hybrid was released in 2012. The second generation of the plug-in variant, the Prius Prime, was released in the U.S. in November 2016. The Prius family totaled global cumulative sales of 6.1 million units in January 2017, representing 61% of the 10 million hybrids sold worldwide by Toyota since 1997. Toyota sells the Prius in over 90 markets, with Japan and the United States being its largest markets.

Common 2004 Toyota Prius problems

The 2004 Toyota Prius, a second-generation model, is known for its innovative hybrid technology and impressive fuel efficiency. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its common problems. This article will discuss five of the most frequently reported issues based on owner complaints.

  • Hybrid Cooling Pump Failure: Another common problem in the 2004 Toyota Prius is the failure of the hybrid cooling pump, which can trigger the code P0a93. This issue can result in a significant loss of coolant and potentially cause the engine to overheat. Replacing the pump is a relatively straightforward process, but it is crucial to address this issue promptly to avoid more severe damage to the vehicle's powertrain.
  • Engine Water Pump Leaks: Some owners have reported leaks in the engine water pump, which can be costly to repair, ranging from $350 to $450. This problem is more prevalent in higher mileage vehicles.
  • HID Headlight Flickering: The 2004 Toyota Prius's HID headlights have been known to flicker and operate erratically. While aftermarket HID units are available, Toyota parts can be pricey. This issue is more of an inconvenience than a severe problem, but it can affect the vehicle's safety, especially during nighttime driving.
  • Wheel Bearing Noise: A humming or rumbling sound can indicate a failed wheel bearing, which can range in price from $350 to $480 to replace. This problem is more common in higher mileage vehicles and can affect the vehicle's handling and ride quality.

In conclusion, while the 2004 Toyota Prius is generally a reliable vehicle, it is not immune to common problems. Understanding these issues can help potential buyers make informed decisions and allow current owners to address potential concerns promptly.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-09-01
  • VIN: JTDKB22U140
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: During a hot period of summer, my drive selector decided to not stay in the drive position unless I held it there. I could make the initial selection of drive and then stop on the gas, but it would not stay unless I physically held the lever down in the drive position. I never had an issue with the reverse position; only drive. I could always get the car back into Park. This is an extremely unsafe driving condition because it happens without warning and the fix is not obvious. Once the driver is aware of the fix, it forces them into an unsafe driving condition: driving with one hand on the parking selector. Once cooler weather came, the issue went away. It didn't happen on all hot days and was intermittent. I replaced the drive selector in 2022 and have only had the issue come up one other time since replacing this part.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-02
  • VIN: JTDKB22U740
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I need your help to get Toyota to fix 2 items: -ABS Accumulator: I understand Toyota at one time had a recall on the ‘ABS Accumulator’, that may have expired. At that time, I did not have any issue, nor was I aware of the recall. Now the ‘ABS Accumulator’ has gone out and is really hurting the braking. I had to get new brakes & they get locked because of the ABS malfunction. It is an expensive item – more than the cost of the car. I intend to keep the car for a long time, if Toyota can help me get the ABS Accumulator fixed? -MFD: The Multi-Functional Display (MFD) in the middle of the dashboard, has gone blank. It used to just partially blank out before, but now the whole screen is blank all the time, making it very hazardous to drive. Obviously, there is nothing I have done & it is a manufacturing defect, because it should last the life of the car. Please have Toyota fix the 2 problems (ABS & MFD). All requests to Toyota have gone unfulfilled. Your help is needed & will be greatly appreciated.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-01
  • VIN: JTDKB20U240
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Toyota has issued time-limited 'Warranty enhancement program ZG1' instead of working with the NHSTA to issue a comprehensive BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY RECALL. ZG1 was explicitly in place only from April 2016 to Dec 2017, requiring dealer verification of an actual system failure prior to 31 Dec 2017. My failure occurred in 2021 and Toyota will not extend ZG1 for me (case 211015000390). Obviously the BRAKE ACTUATOR is a key safety component. Obviously this is a design flaw - brake systems MUST be designed to last the life of the vehicle. Obviously Toyota has had an excessive number of failures. Toyota is improperly using this 'warranty enhancement program ZG1' to avoid the NHSTA and to avoid responsibility for the poor BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY design. Per their letter to owners, Toyota was NOT replacing the BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY on a preventive basis prior to actual brake failure. Because of the importance and severity, Toyota should have replaced the BRAKE ACTUATORS via a recall. I would like Toyota to fix my faulty brakes at their expense.

I SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND DISCOVERED THIS [PART IS BAD IN MOST PRIUS VEHICLES AND TOYOTA EXTENDED THE COVERAGE ON THE 2010-2015 UNTIL AUGUST 31, 2021. UNFORTUNATELY MY CAR IS 2004 AND DOES NOT GET THE BENEFIT OF THE EXTENSION. THE COST TO REPAIR IS ALMOST $4,000. TOYOTA KNOWS OF THIS ISSUE AND SHOULD REPAIR MY CAR AS THEY ARE WITH THE OTHER YEARS 2010-2015. THIS IS A DRIVER SAFETY ISSUE.

I RECENTLY HAD THE FRONT DASH LIGHT GO COMPLETELY OUT. I DID NOT HAVE AN INSTRUMENT PANEL AT ALL. THE WAS NOT A WAY TO SEE MPH, GAS GAUGE, WARNING LIGHTS, NOTHING. THE CENTER MONITOR STAYED ON. IT TOOK 2 DAYS BUT IT CAME BACK ON. A WEEK LATER IT HAPPENED AGAIN AND AGAIN CAME BACK ON. WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AND I DROVE TO DEALERSHIP. IT WAS THE 2ND WATER PUMP GOING OUT. IS THERE A RECALL ON IT OR NOT? I HAD TO HAVE A CAR AND WAS ALLOWED TO LEAVE WITH THE DASH NOT WORKING. I DROVE TO A GAS STATION. AFTER FILLING WITH GAS THE DASH LIGHTS CAME ON AGAIN. I HAD TO PAY FOR THE METERED DASH PART TO BE ORDERED UP FRONT BECAUSE THE MECHANIC SAID IT MAY COME BACK ON. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS AS IT IS AN ONGOING ISSUE. THE MECHANIC EVEN CALLED IT A SHORT. DUE TOT HE PAPERWORK THE DESK REPRESENTATIVE HAD, IT APPEARS THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL REPORTS BEFORE ON THE METERED DASH SHORTING. PLEASE HELP. I NEED THE CAR AND CANNOT AFFORD THESE RIDICULOUS PRICES FOR MANUFACTURER MISTAKES.

IMMEDIATELY AFTER MY STEERING WHEEL BEGAN TO SPIN FREELY WHILE TOTALLY DISENGAGED FROM THE FRONT WHEELS CAUSING TOTAL INABILITY TO CONTROL DIRECTION OF VEHICLE TRAVEL. THIS CAUSED A MINOR COLLISION WITH ROCK /DEBRIS WHICH CAUSED MINOR FRONT BUMPER DAMAGE. I THEN HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO NEAREST MECHANIC WHO DETERMINED THAT THE MAIN BOLT AT THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT AND STEERING RACK WAS DISCONNECTED. THE MECHANIC CHECKED THE SHAFT AND SPLINES FOR DAMAGE AND FOUND NONE, THEN PROCEEDED TO REATTACH BOLT. I WAS ALSO INFORMED BY THIS MECHANIC THAT TOYOTA HAD TWO RELATED RECALLS: ONE FOR THE STEERING SHAFT, AND ONE FOR THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT EXTENSION. BOTH OF THESE RECALLS HAD BEEN ADDRESSED AND REPLACEMENT PARTS INSTALLED FOR MY VEHICLE. THERE ARE TWO RELATED RECALLS: 06V188000 (STEERING SHAFT) AND 12V537000 (INTERMEDIATE STEERING EXTENSION SHAFT). *TR

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-09-25
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JTDKB20U940
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: WHEN STOPPING SUDDENLY SOMETIMES THE BRAKES ON MY 2004 PRIUS WOULD NOT RESPOND IMMEDIATELY AS THEY SHOULD. THEY WOULD RELEASE THE CALIPERS COMPLETELY AND THE ONLY WAY TO STOP WOULD BE TO LET OFF THE BRAKES AND PRESS THEM AGAIN. IT DOES NOT HAPPEN OFTEN BUT IT IS REGULAR ENOUGH THAT THIS HAS ALWAYS CONCERNED ME VERY MUCH. TODAY I WAS FOLLOWING A CAR WHO SLAMMED ON THEIR BRAKES VERY SUDDENLY AND THEREFOR I ALSO HAD TO SLAM ON MY BRAKES. THIS SAME ISSUE OCCURRED AND I DID NOT HAVE TIME TO RELEASE THE BRAKES AND PRESS THEM AGAIN CAUSING ME TO HIT THE BACK OF THE CAR THAT I WAS FOLLOWING. I MAINTAIN MY CARS VERY WELL AND THIS CAR WAS IN TOP CONDITION WITH BRAND NEW TIRES. THE BRAKES DO NOT EVEN ACTIVATE ENOUGH TO SQUEAL OR LEAVE ANY RUBBER BEHIND. THERE IS NO WAY THAT I COULD POSSIBLY HAVE STOPPED IN TIME. THIS IS NOT SAFE AND NEEDS TO BE RESOLVED FOR OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAVE THESE CARS.

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-04-22
  • VIN: JTDKB20U840
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I AM THE OWNER OF A 2004 PRIUS. AFTER BUYING MY CAR USED 2 YEARS AGO I NOTICED THAT ONCE IN AWHILE THE DISPLAY, INCLUDING FUEL CONSUMPTION, SPEEDOMETER, ODOMETER, AND MORE, WOULD NOT LIGHT UP AND THAT THE CAR WOULD NOT TURN OFF EASILY SEVERAL TIMES I HAVE BEEN IN SITUATIONS WHERE I HAVE LITTLE GAS AN AM UNABLE TO SEE MY GAS GAUGE OR KNOW HOW FAT IAM GOING ON THE HIGHWAY. I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS WAS ONCE COVERED BY TOYOTA UNDER THE WARRANTY EXTENSION BUT IS NOT CONSIDERED A SAFETY CONCERN. THE WARRANTY EXTENSION IS EXPIRED. IN WHAT UNIVERSE ARE A FUNCTIONING FUEL GAUGE AND SPEEDOMETER NOT CONSIDERED A SAFETY CONCERN? I AM ALSO CONCERNED THAT THIS WILL DETERIORATE FURTHER AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-11-21
  • VIN: JTDKB20U140
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
  • Summary: (COMBINATION METER PROBLEM) WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT ON THE FREEWAY THE ENTIRE INSTRUMENT PANEL (DASH BOARD) STARTED BLINKING ON AND OFF. FOR OUR SAFETY, WE DECIDED TO SLOW DOWN AND EXIT THE FREEWAY AND STOP IN A SAFE AREA. WE TURNED THE IGNITION OFF, THEN STARTED THE CAR, WITH NOTHING APPEARING ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL BESIDE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. WE LOST THE SPEEDOMETER, ALL GAUGES AND ALL THE ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS WHICH NORMALLY HELPS TO GUIDE OUR DRIVING.WE HAD TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALER THE FOLLOWING MORNING WHICH TOOK SEVEN DAYS TO REPLACE THE COMBO METER. I LATER FOUND OUT THAT THIS ISSUE IS NOT KNEW AND THERE WAS A LETTER ISSUED BY TOYOTA TITLED (2004 TO CERTAIN 2009 MODEL YEAR PRIUS VEHICLES COMBINATION METER WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT NOTICE). THE LETTER STATED THAT THEY HAD PROBLEMS WITH SOME OF THESE PRIUS YEAR MODELS AND THAT IF THE OWNER DID NOT EXPERIENCE THIS CONDITION TO FILE THE LETTER IN THEIR VEHICLE'S OWNER'S WARRANTY INFORMATION BOOKLET. HERE IS MY REQUEST: THIS SHOULD NOT BE A WARRANTY ISSUE BUT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SAFETY RECALL AS DEPENDING OF THE NUMBER OF MILES THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN, THIS ISSUE SEEMS TO SOONER OR LATER OCCUR. I REPAIRED MY VEHICLE AND PAID FOR ALL THE REPAIRS, ALL I NEED NOW IS FOR THE NHTSA TO LOOK INTO THIS PROBLEM, INVESTIGATE IT AND HAVE TOYOTA SEND A RECALL LETTER RATHER THAN AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. THIS WAY I CAN RECEIVE A REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE REPAIRS. HERE IS A LINK TO THE LETTER AND ALL CONSUMERS COMPLAINTS: HTTPS://WWW.TOYOHEADQUARTERS.COM/THREADS/2004-2009-TOYOTA-PRIUS-COMBINATION-METER-WARRANTY-EXTENSION-ZTV.174/ I BELIEVE FOR THE SAFETY OF ALL PRIUS DRIVERS IN THE USA, THIS SHOULD BE CHANGED TO A RECALL SINCE MANY OF THESE MODEL AND YEAR PRIUS VEHICLES ARE STILL ON THE ROAD AND WILL REACH A CERTAIN MILEAGE TO MAKE TO COMBINATION METER FAIL.

2004 Toyota Prius recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2004 Toyota Prius.

2012-11-14
  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2004-2009 Prius vehicles manufactured August 5, 2003, through March 30, 2009. The affected vehicles have a steering intermediate extension shaft assembly built with metal splines that complete the connection from the steering wheel to the steering gear. These splines may have been manufactured with an insufficient hardness.
  • Consequence: Over time, the splines may wear and eventually fail resulting in a loss of steering ability, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the extension shaft and replace it if it is one with insufficient hardness, free of charge. The recall began during December 2012. Owners may contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.
2012-11-14
  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2004-2009 Prius vehicles manufactured August 6, 2003, through March 30, 2009 and FCHV-adv vehicles manufactured December 12, 2008, through September 13, 2011. During manufacturing, a scratch may have occurred inside of the electrically driven water pump at the coil wire. The coil wire may corrode at the scratched portion.
  • Consequence: The corroded coil wire may break and the water pump could stop. The corroded coil wire could cause a short circuit between coil wires and a possible open fuse, creating a stall-like condition of the hybrid system while the vehicle is being driven. This may increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify its owners, and dealers will replace the electric water pump, free of charge. The recall began on January 17, 2013. Owners may contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

  • Manufacturer: TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL
  • Summary: TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CAN GET STUCK IN THE WIDE OPEN POSITION DUE TO ITS BEING TRAPPED BY AN UNSECURED OR INCOMPATIBLE DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT.
  • Consequence: A STUCK OPEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY RESULT IN VERY HIGH VEHICLE SPEEDS AND MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
  • Remedy: TOYOTA FILED AN AMENDED DEFECT REPORT ON NOVEMBER 25, 2009, STATING THAT DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND, ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, ALTER THE SHAPE OF THE FLOOR SURFACE UNDER THE PEDAL. THESE CHANGES ADDRESS THE RISK OF PEDAL ENTRAPMENT DUE TO INTERFERENCE WITH THE FLOOR MAT. REDESIGNED ACCELERATOR PEDALS WILL BECOME AVAILABLE BEGINNING IN APRIL 2010 AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY MODIFIED PEDAL WITH THE NEW PEDAL IF DESIRED. ALSO, DEALERS WILL REPLACE ANY GENUINE TOYOTA OR LEXUS ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MATS WITH REDESIGNED ALL-WEATHER MATS, OR REPURCHASE THE PREVIOUS MATS FROM OWNERS WHO DO NOT WANT THE NEW ONES. ADDITIONALLY, SOFTWARE MODIFICATIONS WILL BE INSTALLED ON CAMRY, AVALON AND LEXUS ES 350, IS 350 AND IS 250 MODELS THAT WILL ENSURE THAT THE BRAKE OVERRIDES THE ACCELERATOR IN THE EVENT BOTH BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS ARE APPLIED. TOYOTA WILL BEGIN MAILING LETTERS TO OWNERS ON DECEMBER 31, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331, LEXUS AT 1-800-255-3987.

Negative 2004 Toyota Prius car reviews

This is my third Toyota vehicle, and second Prius. Although there is more interior space and extra standard features, I have noticed that it is more difficult to see out of the windows than with my previous Toyota vehicles. Additionally, the rear seats are too low for most of my tall friends to be comfortable without their heads touching the roof. However, I appreciate the car's design and features. I was disappointed to find out that the gas mileage is not as good as I had expected. I would have appreciated more transparency from Toyota regarding their gas mileage claims. Overall, I still enjoy driving my Prius and appreciate its eco-friendly features.

I was one of the first in my area to purchase this model. For the first 18 months, it was a great car, although the display needed to be replaced. However, at 18 months (15,000 miles), it broke down on me due to a computer failure. The computer was replaced, but unfortunately, my MPG significantly decreased. My 54 MPG highway went down to 44 MPG highway for the same route (same seasonal temperature), and my local MPG went from 41 to 35 MPG. I have heard that others have reported this problem, but the dealer has not offered any solutions yet. Despite these issues, I have enjoyed this car, and I hope to find a solution to get my great MPG back!

The car may be a bit unstable, but it offers a low drag and a fairly quiet ride. Although the engine produces a strained whine with even minor acceleration, the car still performs well. It is important to note that the claimed mpg may not be achieved in real-world driving (I personally get 40-45). The interior is fine overall, with excellent front visibility and fair seat comfort. However, the rear visibility is poor due to severe blind spots. The dashboard strip beneath the windshield is great, although it may reflect on the windshield. The center-mounted display screen is a good idea in theory, but it can be boring and annoying as currently configured. The car offers very good interior room and fair trunk space. The finish of the car is not bad for a car in this price range. Overall, it is a practical car, although it may not be the most fun to drive.

When I compare the Honda to the Toyota, I find that the Civic was a better buy for the price.

Positive 2004 Toyota Prius car reviews

While millions are being spent on fuel cell development, production is still many years away -- if at all! In the meantime, our dependence on foreign oil and the pollution problem continues. I commend Toyota for their progressive thinking and activities aimed at resolving this serious situation. It's disappointing that the big three seem to have their heads buried in the sand.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 2004 Toyota Prius. I've only had it for two weeks, but I've already put 1,100 miles on it (I took a trip up to Vancouver, BC last weekend). I'm really impressed with its handling and zippiness, and the interior is both great and nice. And let's not forget about the amazing mpg - my last tank was 50.8 (calculated).

  3. Rogers Schumm 2024-10-19

I test drove the car yesterday and just ordered one! I was pleasantly surprised by how great the acceleration was. I got on the highway and before I knew it, I was doing 70 mph. It was so smooth that I didn't even realize how fast I was going. The interior space is excellent, with better leg room than the Camry or Accord, and only slightly narrower. You could easily fit three kids in the back, and it's very comfortable for two 6 ft adults and a 10 year old. If you're considering a Camry or Accord, you should definitely take a look at this car for about the same price.

Driving habits: Based on my experience driving in Wisconsin, I've found that I get the best mileage (49-53 MPG) during the summer months when I mostly drive in the country at speeds between 45-55 MPH. However, during the winter months, my mileage drops to around 40-45 MPG due to the cold weather and shorter trips. It's important to note that driving at speeds greater than 65 MPH can also reduce your mileage. On the bright side, I've found that my car accelerates faster than some mini vans and SUVs, going from 0 to 60 in just 10 seconds. Overall, I'm happy with my car's performance and fuel efficiency.
