2006 Hyundai Sonata problems

The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.

The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.

First generation (Y1; 1985)

The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.

Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.

It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.

The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

Common 2006 Hyundai Sonata problems

The 2006 Hyundai Sonata is known to have several common problems, primarily concerning the climate system and the transmission.

The climate system, including the AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, and automatic climate system, has been reported to experience electrical failures and refrigerant leakage. These issues can lead to the air conditioning system not working properly or blowing warm air, which can be inconvenient and uncomfortable for drivers.

The transmission of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata is also known to have issues, particularly with shifting from first to second gear due to leaks. This can lead to difficulty driving and reduced performance. Additionally, the transmission requires special fluids, which can be more expensive and difficult to find than standard fluids. These issues can be frustrating for drivers and can lead to costly repairs.

It is important to note that not all 2006 Hyundai Sonatas will experience these issues, and some owners have reported having minimal problems with their vehicles. However, these common problems are worth considering for those who are considering purchasing a used 2006 Hyundai Sonata. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these issues before they become major problems.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-07
  • VIN: 5npeu46f66h
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Passenger occupant classification sensor fails to properly identify whether an adult or child is sitting in the front passenger seat causing the airbag to deploy when it shouldn't. If a child is in the front passenger seat and we get into an accident, the child could be hurt or killed by the airbag. We brought it into the Hyundai dealership after receiving a recall notice that it may fail to properly detect whether a child is in the seat or not. At the time of the recall, the dealerships instructions were to place a certain amount of weight on the seat and if the airbag was still disabled then it was determined to be working correctly. I have since been made aware of a Hyundai TSB that came out a couple of years later that stated in all cases the seat cushion was to be removed and sent back to Hyundai for recalibration. In June 2021 the airbag light came on due to a code B1448. In September 2021 I found another TSB by Hyundai stating that they have extended the warranty on the passenger OCS to 15 years, unlimited mileage. The inspection report for the B1448 was on June 7, 2021 and we purchased the car in July 2006. When I called the closest Hyundai dealership regarding the issue they said I was 2 months past the 15 year warranty and there was nothing they could do. I explained that that the code presented itself before the 15 year warranty. It upsets me that I took it in for the airbag recall and the faulty OCS was not replaced at that time. Now I'm stuck driving around a car with the airbag light on or purchase an OCS emulator to fool the system into thinking there is someone sitting in the seat. While this won't fix the problem of the airbag deploying when it shouldn't it doesn't fix the root cause of a faulty OCS mat that Hyundai is well aware of. The vehicle is available for inspection.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-04-02
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 5NPEU46F46H
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I financed my 2006 Hyundai Sonata from a Maryland state car dealer. At the time of my purchase, the dealer didn’t disclose to me that the vehicle had a branded title. The branded title was discovered by Toco Warranty when I requested a auto extended warranty quote. I contacted the MVA, and was informed that it’s illegal to finance a vehicle in the state of Maryland with a branded title since the actual miles are unknown and this is required by dealers in Maryland in order to finance vehicles to consumers. Although I was no longer required to make payments to the dealer, my vehicle has a ABS malfunction, brake line failure, that has caused brake fluid leakage and brake failure as well as a critical control arm needed repair. I’m disabled and on a fixed income, and purchased this vehicle to assist in getting to and from medical appointments. The total cost of repair from Mr. Tire Auto service centers estimâtes at $2700 and Triple AAA Auto repair centers estimates $ 4700 with $ 2800 to get my vehicle in safe driving condition. Because of my low fixed income, I’m unable to make another vehicle purchase without at least $4,600 for a down payment and I don’t have the money for a new purchase nor to make needed repairs.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-10
  • VIN: KMHET46C16A
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: The airbag light in my car stays illuminated and I’m not sure why. No auto/body shops will touch it and the dealership is backed up so bad it’ll be a month and a half before someone can look at it. My car can’t pass inspection like this and if I were to get into an accident it would be extremely dangerous if the airbags didn’t go off.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-01-01
  • VIN: 5npeu46f26h
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: My parking and tail lights do not turn off when I turn off the car when it's dark. I have to turn the headlight switch on and off several times to see if they will turn off. If they do not I have to disconnect the battery so it doesn't discharge. I was told this is a fuse panel issue. If this is a fuse panel issue then I'm concerned what else will go wrong with the fuse panel. If the lights stop working altogether then that will be a problem. I have not taken this vehicle to a dealer due to financial responsibilities. This all started without warning. At about the same time, my ESC turned off and will not come back on. Curious if this is connected.

The contact stated that while checking the vehicle Carfax report, he became aware that the recall repair under NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V354000 (Suspension) had been completed on the vehicle prior to him owning the vehicle. The contact contacted Alexandria Hyundai (1707 Mt Vernon Ave, Alexandria, VA 22301) where the recall repair was completed, and was informed that an anti-corrosion inhibitor was sprayed on the cross member of the vehicle instead of replacing the cross member. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact to take the vehicle to an authorized Hyundai dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 127,314.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-10-29
  • VIN: 5NPEU46F76H
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: My AIR BAG warning light is constantly illuminated. I went on line and found Hyundai 2006 Sonata recall RCONL-08V161-6944 and recall RCONL-08V161-9148 which covers this problem. I also found Hyundai Technical Service Bulletin Number 15-BE-002 which provides the service procedures to repair this symptom. Can't believe it simply involves two inexpensive wire ties. The recall letter states that this problem will be repaired at "no charge to you" and Hyundai will "provide you with a vehicle while your vehicle is being serviced. I am unable to pass my states (RI) vehicle inspection without this repair. I took my car to a local Hyundai dealer and was told that when my VIN number was inputted, my vehicle was not included in this recall and there would be a $150.00 diagnostic fee on top of any repair fees. I am not going to pay hundreds of dollars to insert two cable ties, especially when this problem has already been recognized as a Hyundai problem.

  • Consequence: MISCLASSIFICATION OF A SMALL STATURE ADULT AS A CHILD IN THE RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER SEAT MAY CAUSE THE RIGHT FRONT AIR BAG TO NOT INFLATE IN AN ACCIDENT THAT MERITS AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT AND MAY RESULT IN INJURY TO THE RIGHT FRONT OCCUPANT.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL VERIFY THAT THE OCS DOES NOT PROPERLY RECOGNIZE A PROPERLY SEATED ADULT OCCUPANT. AFTER VERIFICATION, DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE RIGHT FRONT SEAT CUSHION ASSEMBLY AND SHIP IT TO AN EVALUATION AND REPAIR FACILITY. THIS FACILITY WILL EVALUATE AND REPAIR OR REPROGRAM THE SEAT CUSHION AND OCS AS NECESSARY. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR ABOUT MAY 26, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.

Negative 2006 Hyundai Sonata car reviews

  1. Lisandro Shanahan 2024-04-21

This car had an electrical system right off the showroom floor and has had two engines. Unfortunately, the first engine failed at less than 100,000 miles and the second one failed at 34,700 miles. While the dealer provided adequate support, our experience with Hyundai Motors was disappointing. However, we encourage potential buyers to conduct thorough research and ask plenty of questions before making a purchase. While we will not be purchasing any other Hyundai products, we acknowledge that others may have had different experiences. It is important to make an informed decision based on individual needs and preferences.

Overall, it's a car that's worth its money. I believe that any problems with earlier production cars will be fixed in the future. The fuel economy is great, with 15 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway. However, there are some issues with weird noises coming from the rear suspension and gas tank, and the driver's seat can cause back pain. Additionally, my car is equipped with a subwoofer, but the bass quality is even worse than the standard LX audio.

If you're searching for a reliable, affordable, and decent-looking car to take you from point A to point B, then you've come to the right place! While this car may not offer the best handling, performance, or excitement, it is definitely safe, dependable, and budget-friendly. With over 250,000km's and no rust, this car is still going strong and looks as good as new, even without rustproofing in Canada!

Positive 2006 Hyundai Sonata car reviews

I've owned my Sonata for almost a year now and I must say, it's been a fantastic experience. We traded in our Ford Explorer and have never looked back. My parents, who own a Honda Accord, were even envious of the Sonata when they rode in it. Surprisingly, I paid less for my Sonata than they did for their 4-cylinder Honda, which had fewer features. The only issue we had with our car was a loose driver-side mirror, but it was quickly resolved. By the way, when you take your car in for maintenance, don't forget to ask the dealer to enable the in-motion door autolocking feature, which is disabled by default when you purchase a Sonata.

I bought my car from a showroom in North Los Angeles and drove it 130 miles south to San Diego. It was an amazing trip! The new car smell and the acceleration were exhilarating. The car is incredibly fast. I moved to the mid-south a year later and have been there ever since. The car has been great in snow and ice. It has 175K miles and is still on its original spark plugs, transmission fluid, and radiator fluid. I get an oil change every 3000 miles religiously, and I believe that's the secret to its long life. The car has had no major issues, and I even tow with it all the time (5x8 utility trailer 1000 lbs not a problem). The only minor problems I've had include the sun visor, brake pedal switch, rear 3rd brake lamp, headlamps (which I've had to replace three times), the driver's window when wet, and the rear brake lamp bulbs. I've even driven the car at 130 miles an hour in the Southern California desert just to see if the cruise control works at over 100 mph (it does!). The best feature of this car is its reliability. I would buy another, but unfortunately, they don't offer that V-6 in a Sonata. It is available in the Santa Fe, and it now produces almost 300 hp. I really like this brand and will stick with it. They need to hurry up and make the Santa Cruz because I need a new vehicle. It's been 10 years, and it's time for a change. And yes, I will keep the old Sonata as a second car until she dies.

  3. Valentin Senger 2024-11-02

After shopping around at all of the competition, I ultimately decided on the Sonata. It was hands down the best value for my money. I have been living with it for 6 months and have driven 8000 miles, and I can confidently say that it is both quiet and comfortable. Additionally, it has all the power you need. Don't believe the poor gas mileage claims - I consistently get around 24 MPG in town and 29 MPG on the highway.

  4. Antwan Wisoky 2024-09-08

Best car you've ever bought! It's amazing that it's still going strong after 15 years. Just needs a new ground cable, which is pretty impressive. It's got lots of pickup and go and has been super reliable with 114k miles on it.

  5. Angelo Donnelly 2024-08-09

I love our new Sonata! It's so much fun to drive and looks flashy while still being economical. However, we did notice that the gas mileage isn't quite as advertised. Even though we were told it gets 30-32 MPG, our gauges only read 23 MPG. Overall, I still think the car is great. It's very roomy (even for someone like me with broad shoulders) and tons of fun to drive. When you hit the gas, it really goes! Great job, Hyundai!
