1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass problems
The Oldsmobile Cutlass was a series of automobiles produced by General Motors' Oldsmobile division between 1961 and 1999. At its introduction, the Cutlass was Oldsmobile's entry-level model; it began as a unibody compact car, but saw its greatest success as a body-on-frame intermediate. The Cutlass was named after Vought F7U Cutlass, as well as the type of sword, which was common during the Age of Sail.
Introduced as the top trim level in Oldsmobile's compact F-85 Series, the Cutlass evolved into a distinct series of its own, spawning numerous variants. These included the 4-4-2 muscle car in 1964, the upscale Cutlass Supreme in 1966, the high-performance Hurst/Olds in 1968, and the Vista Cruiser station wagon.
By the 1980s, Oldsmobile was using the Cutlass as a sub-marque, with numerous vehicle lines bearing the name simultaneously. The compact Cutlass Calais, midsize Cutlass Ciera, Cutlass Cruiser station wagon, and flagship midsize Cutlass Supreme were among the models available during this time.
In the 1990s, Oldsmobile began moving away from its traditional model lines, with other legacy vehicle nameplates like the 98 and 88 being discontinued in 1996 and 1999, respectively. The Cutlass name was likewise retired in 1999 in favor of the all-new Oldsmobile Alero, ending nearly 40 years of continuous Cutlass production.

Common 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass problems
The Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, produced from 1989 to 1997, is known for several common issues that can affect its performance and reliability. Here are some of the most commonly reported problems with the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme:
- Dim headlights: Many Cutlass Supreme owners have reported issues with dim headlights, which can be caused by corroded or loose connections, a failing alternator, or a weak battery. The first step to addressing this issue is to check the battery and alternator to ensure they are functioning properly. If they are, the next step is to check the connections and wiring to the headlights. Corrosion or loose connections can be cleaned or tightened to restore proper function.
- Blown fuses: Electrical issues can also be caused by blown fuses. In some cases, fuses may blow repeatedly, which can indicate a larger problem. This issue can be caused by a short circuit or faulty wiring, which should be inspected by a qualified mechanic.
- Dead battery: A dead battery is a common issue that can be caused by a number of factors, including a failing alternator or a faulty battery. If the battery is the issue, it may need to be replaced. If the alternator is failing, it may need to be repaired or replaced.
- Faulty starter: A faulty starter can prevent the engine from starting, which can be a frustrating issue for Cutlass Supreme owners. This issue can be caused by a number of factors, including a weak battery or a failing starter motor. A qualified mechanic can inspect the starter and determine whether it needs to be repaired or replaced.
- Malfunctioning gauges: Malfunctioning gauges can be caused by a faulty gauge cluster or wiring issues. The first step is to check the connections and wiring to the gauges. If the connections and wiring are fine, the gauge cluster may need to be repaired or replaced.
- Non-functioning power windows: Power windows that don't function can be caused by a number of factors, including faulty switches or motors. The first step is to check the fuses and connections to the power windows. If those are fine, the switches or motors may need to be repaired or replaced.
In addition to these issues, the fifth generation Cutlass Supreme (1989-1997) also experienced some common problems related to the fuel injectors, ignition switch, transmission, and air conditioning system. The fuel injectors were known to fail or leak, which could lead to a decrease in fuel efficiency and engine performance. The ignition switch was also known to fail, which could cause the car to stall or not start at all. Transmission problems, such as slipping or failing, were also common in this generation of Cutlass Supreme. Finally, the air conditioning system was known to have issues, with some drivers reporting that the air conditioning would not blow cold air or that the air would only blow from certain vents.
Regular maintenance and inspection can help prevent these issues from occurring in the first place. If any of these issues do arise, it's important to address them as soon as possible to prevent further damage and ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-06-01
- VIN: 1G3WH52M1VF
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I PURCHASED AFTERMARKET FUEL TANK AND SENDING UNIT FROM PARTS STORE :SPECTRA PREMIUM BRAND #GM30A FUEL TANK AND SP09D1H. AFTER INSTALLING THESE PARTS INTO MY CAR, I FOUND I HAD A LARGE GAS LEAK WHEN I FILLED THE CAR WITH FUEL LIKE ABOUT A GALLON WENT ON THE GROUND AND IT LEAKED AS I DROVE THE CAR BACK TO THE SHOP. I HAD TO HAVE THE FUEL TANK TAKEN OUT AND MY MECHANIC FOUND THE SEAL #L020 FROM SPECTRA PREMIUM, DID NOT FIT MAKING IT LEAK FUEL, INSTALLED ANOTHER NEW L020 SEAL AND BEFORE HE INSTALLED THE TANK INTO THE CAR HE DID A BENCH TEST AND IT FUEL GUSHED OUT AS IF THERE WAS NO SEAL INSTALLED, HE LOOKED AT THE OLD RUSTED TANK SEAL AND FOUND IT TO BE MUCH MORE ROBUST SO HE GOT A GM SEAL #10152293 AND INSTALLED IT AND AGAIN HE BENCH TESTED THE TANK AND NO LEAK, THE L020 SEAL THAT COMES WITH THE NEW TANK AND ONE IS INCLUDED WITH THE NEW SENDING UNIT IS AN INCORRECT FIT OR WRONG SIZE OR DIAMETER IT ALSO IS VERY FLIMSY COMPARED TO THE GM SEAL. THIS SEAL IS LISTED FOR MANY GM CARS INCLUDING MINE. I MAY NOT HAVE FOUND THIS PROBLEM UNTIL I FILLED MY FUEL TANK, A LOT OF WASTED LABOR WENT INTO HAVING TO FIX THIS DANGEROUS PART, IF THIS VEHICLE WOULD HAVE BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT, LIVES MAY HAVE BEEN LOST FROM FUEL LEAKAGE. I HAVE CONTACTED SPECTRA PREMIUM ABOUT THIS PROBLEM,NOW I AM CONTACTING YOU ALSO PLEASE HAVE THESE PARTS INSPECTED!!

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-01-25
- VIN: 1G3WH52M8VF
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: WE BOUGHT THE CAR IN 2010 FROM A USED CAR DEALER. UPON 6 MONTHS OF DRIVING WE NOTICED A STEERING PROBLEM THAT WAS HARD TO THE LEFT AND JUST DIDN'T SEEM RIGHT. THE ENGINE ALSO HAD OVERHEATING AND GASKET PROBLEMS SO WE HAD THE ENGINE REPLACED. UPON TEST DRIVING THE VEHICLE THE MECHANIC WAS DRIVING AND THE POWER STEER HAD A COMPLETE FAILURE AND RAN HIM TOWARDS ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND THEN BACK ANOTHER DIRECTION. UPON RETURN TO THE SHOP HE CONCLUDED THE ENTIRE RACK WAS BROKEN AND NEEDED REPLACED. AT THE TIME IN 2011 WE WERE NOT AWARE THAT GM RECALLED THE LOWER PINION BEARING IN THE POWER STEERING RACK IN 2003 SO WE HAD PAID FOR A NEW RACK AND PINION TO BE REPLACED. THERE EVIDENTLY WAS LEFTOVER DEBRIS IN THE RACK IN PINION FROM THE ORIGINAL PART FAILURE AND NOW HAS RUINED THE 2ND RACK AND PINION. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT IN 2004 OUR CAR IS LISTED AS A CAR THAT WAS AFFECTED AND HAD BEEN SERVICED IN 2004 IN GEORGIA. THE ONLY THING REPLACED WAS A TINY SNAP RING, IN WHICH THE DETAILED REPAIR PDF STATES IN MULTIPLE INCIDENCES THAT IT IS UP TO THE MECHANIC TO DECIDE HOW MUCH FAILURE HAS TAKEN PLACE WHAT TO DO AND THAT ANY MISTEPS WILL LEAD TO OTHER PART FAILURES!! WE BOUGHT THIS CAR W/ VERY LOW MILEAGE SO AT THE POINT THEY SAY THEY FIXED THE CAR AND WHEN IT BROKE WAS APPROX. 30,000 MILES. THEY EITHER DID NOT FIX CORRECTLY OR THEY DID NOT TOUCH THE CAR AT ALL BECAUSE THE VERY DESCRIPTION TO WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR CAR WAS EXACTLY WHAT IS LISTED AS THE FAILURE OF THE PART. WE WOULD LIKE THE ORIGINAL PART FAILURE THAT IS NOW SHREDDED INTO HUNDREDS OF PIECES CAUSING FUTURE RACK AND PINION FAILURES TO BE FLUSHED CLEAN AND HONESTLY SHOULD REPLACED THE ENTIRE RACK BECAUSE THEY NEVER FIXED THE PART ORIGINALLY OR THEY DIDN'T FIX IT CORRECTLY AND THE ORIGINAL PART FAILED EXACTLY AS STATED ON THE RECALL TO THE POINT THE MECHANIC ALMOST WRECKED OUR CAR. *TR

- Summary: TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1997 OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS. WHEN THE CONTACT INSERTED THE KEY INTO THE IGNITION, THE ANTI- THEFT WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT CONTROL PANEL. THE ENGINE WOULD NOT START UNTIL THE LIGHT DIMMED. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, BUT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE OR PROVIDE A SUFFICIENT REMEDY. THE MANUFACTURER DID NOT ASSIST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 112,000. UPDATED 11/19/08. *LJ THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN SHE ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE, IT WOULD NOT START. UPDATED 11/19/08. *JB
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-06-11
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM ON MY 1997 OLDS CUTLASS COMES ON FREQUENTLY AND WILL NOT ALLOW MY CAR TO START. IN RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE I SEE THERE ARE LITERALLY 100'S OF COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS VERY PROBLEM. GM SHOULD BE MADE TO FIX THE ISSUE BY COMPLETELY REPLACING THE DEFECTIVE PART WITH ONE THAT IS MORE STABLE. THIS PROBLEM STARTED OUT ONLY HAPPENING EVER ONCE IN AWHILE, NOW IT IS HAPPENING DAILY. MY ONLY OPTION AT THIS POINT, IS TO DISCONNECT THE VERY FEATURE THAT WOULD PREVENT MY VEHICLE FROM BEING STOLEN. OBVIOUSLY, REPLACING THE IGNITION OR KEY IS A SHORT TERM FIX AS THE NEW PART ALSO BECOMES DEFECTIVE IN A VERY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. *TR
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-11-18
- VIN: 1G3WH52M1VF
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET FAILED TWICE. FIRST REPAIRED AT MONROE SERVICE ON 11-18-2005 AT 76655 MILES THE COST WAS $731.16. SECOND REPAIR WAS AT GOODYEAR GEMINI ON 12-21-2006 AT 82274MILES. THE COST WAS $642.40. BOTH FACILITIES WERE ASE CERTIFIED. I HAVE BEEN AN ASSISTANT STORE MANAGER IN THE PAST FOR BOTH PROCARE AND GOODYEAR, AND RARELY SAW A FAILURE OF AN INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET, EXCEPT IN EARLY FORIEGN ENGINES WITH ALUMINUM BLOCKS OR ALUMINUM HEADS OR BOTH. I JUST HAD A FRONT BRAKE OVERHAUL AT MIDAS, AND THE TECH NICIAN ASKED IF I HAD HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH THEINTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET, WHICH SET ME OFF ON THIS SEARCH. I TALKED TO THE MANAGERS AT BOTH MONROE AND GOODYEAR ,AND BOTH SAID THEY HAVE HAD MANY PROBLEMS WITH THESE GASKETS THAT THEY HAVE HAD TO REPAIR. DID A GOOGLE SEARCH AND FOUND MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT IT, AND SAW THAT A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT OUT OF CANADA WAS BEING FILED. I COULD PROVIDE THE NECESSARY DOCUMENTATION OF BOTH REPAIRS. TALKED TO GM ABOUT IT, AND AS I EXPECTED, SAID THAT I DIDN'T BRING IT TO A GM FACILITY FOR REPAIR, AND THAT IT HAD EXCESSIVE MILEAGE. I DID NOT CONSIDER 76665 OR 82274 AS EXCESSIVE MILEAGE FOR THE YEAR OF THE CAR OR THIS TYPE OF FAILURE. WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THIS DEFECT CAUSED FUEL TO LEAK OUT ONTO HOT EXTERIOR OF THE ENGINE? *AK

- VIN: 1G3NB52M6V6
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I OWN A 1997 OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS AND I HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE PASSLOCK ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM ON THIS VEHICLE FOR SOME TIME. SOMETIMES WHEN I TRY AND START THIS VEHICLE, THE THEFT SYSTEM LIGHT STARTS TO BLINK ON AND OFF. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE VEHICLE CAN NOT BE STARTED FOR AT LEAST 10 MINUTES. THIS IS VERY FRUSTRATING AS IT USUALLY HAPPENS AT THE WORST OF TIMES, LIKE IN THE COLD WINTER WEATHER, AT A GAS STATION, OR IN A LOADING/UNLOADING ZONE AT A HOTEL. SOMETIMES THE THEFT SYSTEM LIGHT WILL COME ON WHILE DRIVING AND THEN I WONDER IF THE CAR WILL START WHEN I AM READY TO LEAVE AGAIN. I HAVE READ MANY STORIES ABOUT SIMILAR PROBLEMS THAT OTHER GM OWNERS HAVE ON THEIR VEHICLES, SO I KNOW THAT THIS IS NOT A RANDOM PROBLEM THAT AFFECTS ONLY SOME PEOPLE. THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY GM. I HAVE HAD THE IGNITION SWITCH REPLACED ONCE ON THIS VEHICLE, AND THIS WILL BE A VERY EXPENSIVE OPTION IF I HAVE TO DO THAT AGAIN. IS THERE ANYTHING THAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT THIS? THE DATE LISTED BELOW IS THE MOST RECENT DATE THAT THIS HAPPENED. IT HAPPENED TWICE LAST WEEK WHEN WE WERE OUT OF TOWN ON A TRIP AT THE WORST OF TIMES. *JB

1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass.
- Manufacturer: DELPHI
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:PRESSURE RELIEF DEVICES
- Summary: CERTAIN DELPHI FUEL PRESSURE REGULATORS, P/NOS. FP10020-11B1, FP10026-11B1, AND FP10027-11B1, SOLD AFTER JANUARY 9, 2007, AS AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT FOR VARIOUS PASSENGER VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. THE UNIVERSAL PRESSURE REGULATORS (UPR) WERE PRODUCED WITHOUT AN O'RING AND RETAINER.
- Consequence: FUEL MAY LEAK, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DELPHI WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE UPR FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 23, 2007. OWNERS CAN CONTACT DELPHI AT 877-411-8770.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: STEERING:RACK AND PINION
- Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES HAVE LOWER PINION BEARINGS IN THE POWER RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY IN WHICH THE RETAINER TABS WERE NOT CRIMPED PROPERLY. THESE RETAINERS COULD FAIL AND PERMIT THE BALL BEARINGS TO ESCAPE.
- Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, THE PINION SHAFT CAN BE FORCED UPWARD DURING LEFT TURNS AND BACK DOWN AS THE STEERING WHEEL IS MOVED BACK AND TO THE RIGHT. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL NEED TO EXERT MORE EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, SIMILAR TO A VEHICLE WITHOUT POWER ASSISTED STEERING. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES EVEN FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL REQUIRE MUCH HIGHER EFFORT TO TURN LEFT AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL AS MUCH AS INTENDED. WITH THE MAXIMUM PINION SHAFT MOVEMENT, WHICH REQUIRES INTERNAL GEAR COMPONENT DAMAGE, THE DRIVER CAN ENCOUNTER HIGH RESISTANCE TO TURNING LEFT, FOLLOWED BY UNINTENDED POWER ASSIST TO THE RIGHT. IN ANY OF THESE CONDITIONS, A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW LOWER PINION BEARING UNLESS INSPECT OF THE EXISTING BEARING INDICATES THAT REPLACEMENT OF THE GEAR ASSEMBLY IS NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 5, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080; CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438; OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537; OR PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:LINKAGES
- Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE "SALT BELT" STATES: ALASKA, COLORADO, CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IDAHO, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MONTANA, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, NORTH DAKOTA, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, SOUTH DAKOTA, UTAH, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND WYOMING. IF A BUILDUP OF SNOW OR ICE RESTRICTS THE MOVEMENT OF THE PASSENGER SIDE WINDSHIELD WIPER ARM, THE PIVOT HOUSING CAN CRACK AND THE WIPERS WILL NOT OPERATE.
- Consequence: REDUCED VISIBILITY IN INCLEMENT WEATHER COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE PASSENGER SIDE WINDSHIELD WIPER PIVOT HOUSING. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN AUGUST 14, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020 OR OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-442-6537.

Positive 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass car reviews

The ride is smooth and the inside looks expensive, all at a low price. It has great get-up-and-go and comfortably seats 5 people. Additionally, the fuel economy is great, and while there is a little road noise, it's not too noticeable.

The Cutlass GLS is an exceptional car that I had the pleasure of owning. With 87000 miles on the odometer, it was unfortunate that it was totaled in an accident. However, the body cage did its job and I was unscathed. The car was extremely reliable and I never had to take it to the shop except for regular oil changes. The standard 3.1L V6 engine provided ample power for a car of this size, making acceleration and passing a breeze. It is a shame that it is difficult to find another Cutlass GLS loaded for the same price as the insurance payout. It seems that no one wants to part with theirs. The Cutlass and Chevy Malibu twin are an excellent value for money in the midsize class.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with the car I bought back in 2005. It's been a great ride so far, very comfortable and with a lot of potential. However, I've had some issues with the intake manifold, which has been a bit of a problem. I think GM could have spent a little more time on making quality a priority over quantity. Unfortunately, it's been in the shop quite a bit lately, but I still think it's a great car overall!

I received my Oldsmobile Cutlass from a friend when I needed a car for my new baby. The handling was solid and the steering was sensitive, providing good power. Although I am unsure about the fuel economy, I have had a positive experience driving it so far. When I first got the car, the check engine light was on, but after losing coolant and getting it fixed with a new water pump and cap, it has been running smoothly. I spoke to a dealer who informed me that the intake gasket leaking is a common problem with this car, but it can be repaired for only $700 if done by the dealer once. If you have your own mechanic, it may cost less. Overall, I find it to be a great and reliable car with a smooth ride, especially with the new tires.

My third cousin sold me this car with 114k miles on it, and it can go up to 150k miles. When I bought it for my wife's birthday, she was thrilled with it. I found the ride to be very smooth and the handling great, especially compared to a Honda Accord. On a trip from New York to Georgia, we filled the car with suitcases and boxes, and the gas mileage was awesome - we got 35 mpg with cruise control. The power was also impressive. However, the quality of the leather needs improvement as the seats are cracking and the back seat is coming apart.
