The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.

The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.

First generation (Y1; 1985)

The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.

Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.

It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.

The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-03
  • VIN: 5NPEU46F07H
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I recently purchased this vehicle from my father. I believe there is a faulty sensor in the passenger airbag sensor for their OCS (occupant classification system). The warning lamp for 'Air Bag' stays on when operating the vehicle. When starting the vehicle with no passenger, the lamp to show there is no passenger comes on but then turns off. It does the same thing with a passenger in the seat. The lamp to show there is no passenger used to stay lit, when there is no passenger. I have tried to address the issue with Hyundai about 2 or 3 times by calling customer service by phone and they told me all 3 times that there are no "open recalls for this vehicle at this time." But I can clearly see through records that recall no. 08V161000 addressed this very issue. I will attempt to make an appointment with one of their Hyundai dealerships but I believe there is a safety issue here. Thanks!

AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM

  • VIN: 5npeu46f47h
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
  • Summary: I took the car in for a recall/warranty repair on 3/28/2021. The part (seatbelt/airbag sensor/pre tensioner) has still not been delivered to the dealer so that they can repair the vehicle. The part being defective prevents the airbag sensor from operating correctly and, as such, the airbags will not work in the event of a collision. This car is my daily driver and has largely been parked idle for 12 months. For the entire year, I have been fighting with their corporate customer support team and there has been no progress whatsoever on securing the part. They have given me numerous dates for the part to arrive. None of them have been met. No new date has been provided. The dealer blames Hyundai Corporate, Hyundai Corporate blames the 'distribution centre' and so on. The car is unsafe with no airbags and there is no resolution in sight.

2007 Hyundai Sonata recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata.

2013-08-12
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
  • Components: SUSPENSION:REAR
  • Summary: Hyundai is recalling certain model year 2006-2010 Sonata vehicles manufactured March 1, 2005, through January 21, 2010; and model year 2006-2011 Azera vehicles manufactured September 27, 2005, through November 22, 2010 originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Road salt and water can enter portions of the rear crossmember, leading to corrosion of the crossmember steel. This may lead to detachment of one of the rear control arms.
  • Consequence: Control arm separation may suddenly change the rear wheel alignment, affecting the handling of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will repair or replace the crossmember assembly. The recall began on October 8, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai Customer Care Center at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall number is 113.
2013-04-01
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
  • Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

Negative 2007 Hyundai Sonata car reviews

  1. Ola Mueller 2024-09-05

I'm currently at 57k miles and unfortunately my car is experiencing some issues with the ignition and steering wheel. Despite these setbacks, the car looks great and performs well on the highway. However, I have noticed that some of the plastic components seem to be quite fragile and have already started to break. For example, the visors and front skirt have already broken, and the paint is flaking in several places. Additionally, the driver's seat only goes back and not up, and the seat adjustment control falls off every time I exit the car. The passenger side view mirror housing is also broken, which will require a costly paint and replacement job. Yesterday, the back driver's side door handle even fell off. While I have found the materials used to build this car to be quite cheap, I still appreciate its overall appearance and performance on the road. However, I don't think I would purchase this car again.

The car was leased in 2007 for two years and returned in June 2009. Although it had a nice look and provided a smooth ride with good acceleration, the quality of the tires and brake problems left a negative impression on me about the Hyundai brand. Unfortunately, I had to replace the tires before the lease was up, and since they weren't matched to the original brand, Hyundai charged me for two tires again. While I understand this is standard lease policy, it still feels unfair. As a result, I will probably look for another brand and avoid Hyundai altogether, as I don't want to experience similar issues with any of their cars within only two years of purchase.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2007 car. Unfortunately, I had to replace the engine at 71,000 miles, but I was grateful that it was completely covered by the factory warranty. However, two years later and 35,000 miles into the second engine, it blew again! I was told that the whole bottom half of the engine needs to be replaced and that Hyundai is willing to help by paying half the cost of the repair. While I appreciate the offer, I do feel that they should cover the entire cost of the second new engine. If they only cover half, I would still have to pay $2650 out of pocket, and my confidence in the car's reliability is completely gone. I'm feeling a bit lost now. Thanks for listening.

I purchased this car when it was two years old with 30,000 miles on it. I have noticed that the brown color comes off the leather when I use standard leather cleaner on it, and the paint job could be improved. Unfortunately, it rusts easily. I have had to replace the stop lamp switch twice and both sun visors have broken and needed to be replaced. At 116,000 miles, the crankshaft broke into two parts and needed to be replaced. Additionally, the tires wear down quickly due to the way they sit on the car. Overall, I have had some challenges with this car. I am considering other brands such as Ford or Toyota for my next purchase.

I purchased my 2007 Hyundai Sonata with 44K miles and have since put over 66K miles on it. During the warranty period, the left side rear window broke and was stuck in the down position, but Hyundai was able to fix it at no cost. Unfortunately, now that the warranty has expired, the right side rear window has also broken and is stuck in the down position. I'm a bit disappointed with the quality of the parts, especially compared to my previous Nissan. Additionally, I've noticed some bubbling on the paint of the mirrors, although it's only in one spot. When I first bought the car, the hood and front bumper had been repainted due to bubbling paint. Overall, I've had some issues with my Hyundai, but I'm hopeful that they will continue to improve their products in the future.

I absolutely love this color! The moment I saw my Sonata on the lot, I exclaimed, 'WOW!' Now, every time I get in, I can't help but say, 'WOW, I love this car!' It's got the smooth ride of my grandmother's Cadillac, but the handling of my old Subaru. When I first moved to Northern Virginia, I was always making U-turns, but the Sonata handles them like a dream. I hate to admit it, but it's just as good as my old Subaru! It's the perfect combination of everything you could want in a car. You get that feeling of safety the first time you stop on a rain-slick road, and you just know you've got the right car. Plus, the trunk space is unbelievable!

This car excels in all categories. In all the test drives and research that I performed, the Sonata LX came out on top.

I bought this vehicle used with just under 35k miles on it about 2.5 years ago and have put about 25k miles on it since then. The car is decently loaded, not as well as others, but enough to keep the average person happy. Everything is designed to be functional more than luxurious, basically meant to go for the long haul and/or help you not freak out as much due to the cost of the car. The Platinum model I bought has plenty in it and isn't exciting (not my style), but I will say that if proper maintenance is done, it can be EXTREMELY reliable. I can't justify trading it because I've had no issues with it, and for that, I'm keeping it.

If you're in the market for a family sedan, this is definitely the best bang for your buck. It surpasses the value of the Camry and Honda, as well as the mid/intermediate class, such as the Corolla and Civic, which I compared. The brand is sure to become a powerhouse and increase market share, which will bring prices higher to where they should be - approximately 3-4 times higher at least. This is reflected in the warranty, not to mention the undervalued price in what really matters - safety, warranty, soundness, and comfort. This car drives very similarly to a Buick Century.

I was excited to purchase a Camry-like car for $3000 less and was impressed with the smooth V6 engine that provides power when needed. The car is also comfortable and offers a higher seating position than most other cars. The heater starts working within a mile, which is a great feature. However, I have experienced some issues with the 17
