1992 Chrysler Fifth avenue problems

chrysler logo

The Chrysler Fifth Avenue was a trim level/option package or model name used by Chrysler for its larger sedans from 1979 to 1993. The Fifth Avenue name was no longer used after 1993 when Chrysler introduced its new LH-platform New Yorker and similar LHS. The title "Fifth Avenue" references a street in New York City which contains many upscale shops and cultural attractions. The Chrysler Building is two blocks east of Fifth Avenue.

In 1980, realizing that they needed to offer a comparable luxury sedan to the Cadillac Fleetwood and Lincoln Town Car, Chrysler offered the Fifth Avenue trim package as an option on the R-body New Yorker.

In 1982, further downsizing put the New Yorker model on the M-body platform, with a Fifth Avenue package available. In 1983, to distinguish the M-body New Yorker from the new AE-body New Yorker, the Fifth Avenue name was added to the M-body, so it became the one-year-only New Yorker Fifth Avenue. In 1984, the M-body Chrysler was simply the Fifth Avenue, a name it kept through 1989. The AE New Yorker morphed into the AC body New Yorker in 1988, although all 3 New Yorker models were offered that year (AE New Yorker Turbo, AC New Yorker, and M-body Fifth Avenue).

After the discontinuance of the M-body in mid-1989, Chrysler offered an even smaller Fifth Avenue on the AC platform in 1990, which ran through 1993.

In 1994, a new LH-body New Yorker appeared, as did a companion LH Chrysler, the LHS, in 1996. The New Yorker bowed out after 1997, and was not replaced until the 2005 Chrysler 300 LX. The LHS was discontinued after 2001 and was not replaced.

Common 1992 Chrysler Fifth avenue problems

The 1992 Chrysler Fifth Avenue, like its sibling the New Yorker, was known for its smooth ride and luxurious interior. However, as with any car, there were common problems that owners reported.

One of the most frequently reported issues was related to the digital dashboard, which was used in the 1992-1993 AC/AY body vehicles, including the Imperial, New Yorker, and Fifth Avenue. The digital dashboard used Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) instead of the more reliable vacuum florescent displays (VFDs) used in earlier models. This change was made because it wasn't possible to make a cluster using VFDs that looked like the new design. However, the LCDs required backlighting, which was a problem in 1991 as there wasn't a strong technology for this purpose. Huntsville Electronics, the Chrysler division responsible for most of the company's electronic products, used light bulbs for backlighting, but this led to problems as the bulbs would burn out or release heat, which LCDs don't like. This resulted in a cluster that was functional and good-looking but not reliable.

Another common problem reported by owners of the 1992 Chrysler Fifth Avenue was related to the transmission control module, which may fail. This issue was also reported by owners of the Chrysler New Yorker, which shared many components with the Fifth Avenue.

In addition to these issues, there were also reports of various other problems, such as issues with the transmission, engine, and interior components. However, these problems were not as common as the issues with the digital dashboard and transmission control module.

In conclusion, while the 1992 Chrysler Fifth Avenue was known for its smooth ride and luxurious interior, there were common problems that owners reported. These included issues with the digital dashboard, transmission control module, and various other components. However, with proper maintenance and care, many of these issues could be avoided or minimized.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-05-28
  • VIN: 1C3XV66L2ND
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I WAS ON MY WAY TO CHURCH, DRIVING IN A 30 MPH SPEED ZONE, GOING DOWN HILL, COMING TO A STOP AND IT HAD JUST STARTED RAINING. AS I APPLIED THE BRAKES I STARTED SLIDING/HYDROPLANING ALL OVER THE ROAD, FIRST INTO THE ONCOMING LANE, THEN BACK TO MY LANE, BUT OFF TO THE EDGE AND FINALLY MANAGED TO STOP JUST AT THE STOP SIGN. THERE WAS TRAFFIC ALL AROUND ME, BUT THANKFULLY I DIDN'T HIT ANYONE OR GO OFF INTO THE RAVINE. I HAD JUST HAD NEW BRAKE PADS PUT ON 2 WEEKS BEFORE. MY TIRES WERE WEARING, BUT MY MECHANIC/TIRE SALESMAN SAID I DIDN'T NEED NEW TIRES YET, I STILL HAD PLENTY OF TREAD. AS SOON AS I COULD PULL OVER AND CALL HIM, I SCHEDULED AN APPT. FOR NEW TIRES 2 DAYS LATER. I AM A WIDOW AND AM VERY CAREFUL TO KEEP THE CAR IN GOOD SHAPE SO MY CHANCES OF GETTING STRANDED ARE AS LOW AS I KNOW HOW TO KEEP THEM. MY SON AND SOME OTHER MEN AT CHURCH HAD ALSO LOOKED AT THE TIRES AND SAID I DIDN'T NEED TO CHANGE THEM. SO, I STARTED WONDERING WHAT COULD HAVE MADE ME HYDROPLANE LIKE THAT IF THE TIRES WEREN'T BAD, AND HAD I SPENT THE MONEY ON NEW ONES NEEDLESSLY? THAT'S WHEN I DECIDED TO RESEARCH THE RECALL SITE. AND I FOUND ANOTHER INCIDENT ALMOST IDENTICAL TO MINE, COMPLAINT FILED 10/06/2008. ALSO, THE ODOMETER DOESN'T WORK, SO I REALLY DON'T KNOW THE ACTUAL MILES. IT IS MORE THAN 165,000. THAT IS WHAT IS SHOWING. IF THERE IS SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED, I NEED TO KNOW. THE CAR RUNS GOOD, BUT I DON'T WANT TO BE UNSAFE IN IT. THAT WAS A VERY SCARY INCIDENT AND I KNOW THE LORD WAS WITH ME AND THE OTHER DRIVERS AROUND ME, BUT I DON'T BELIEVE IN TESTING HIM, KNOWING THAT SOMETHING CAN BE DONE! IN THIS INCIDENT THERE COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN A CRASH, INJURY OR EVEN DEATH. *TR

I CONTACTED ALL AMERICAN JEEP/CHRYSLER BY PHONE & IN PERSON EARLY-MID JUNE 08 BUT WAS UNABLE TO MOVE APPOINTMENT BECAUSE PEOPLE ON VACATION, ETC..
