1996 Lexus Gs300 problems
The Lexus GS (Japanese: レクサス・GS, Rekusasu GS) is an executive car (E-segment in Europe) manufactured and marketed by Lexus across four generations — launched in 1991 as the Toyota Aristo in Japan and as the Lexus GS for markets outside the JDM beginning in February 1993. It continued with the Toyota Aristo name for the Japanese market until January 2005.
Lexus marketed the GS as a performance sedan competing in the mid-luxury class, between its compact executive IS and large/flagship LS. The GS shared its chassis with one of Toyota's longest-running nameplates, the Toyota Crown premium sedans until 2011.
The GS featured six-cylinder engines and rear-wheel drive, with a V8 engines offered forall generations, and all-wheel drive and hybrid versions debuted in 2005. Previously, all-wheel drive versions were already made available in the Japanese-market S140 series Aristo. The first two generations had a Japanese domestic market equivalent, the Toyota Aristo (aristo is Greek for "the best"), which was sold from 1991 until the Lexus marque's domestic debut in 2005. Though largely identical in exterior and interior design, the GS and the Aristo differed in their engine and transmission combinations as well as equipment packages. The GS name stands for Grand Sedan. However, some Lexus importers use the backronymic name, Grand Sport.
The first generation Lexus GS began sales in the United States, Europe and selected Asian markets in 1993. It was originally introduced with an inline-six engine and exterior bodywork designed by Italdesign Giugiaro. The second generation model premiered in 1997, using a new platform, in-house styling, and adding a V8 version for the first time outside Japan. The third generation GS, which premiered globally for the 2006 model year, was produced in V6, V8, and hybrid versions, the latter known as the GS 450h. The third generation models were the first GS sedans to be badged as such in the Japanese domestic market.
The fourth generation Lexus GS premiered in August 2011 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, where models introduced included the V6-powered GS 350, hybrid GS 450h, and performance-tuned F Sport variants. A lower-displacement V6 model, the GS 250, premiered at the Auto Guangzhou Exhibition in November 2011, targeted at Asian and European markets. In some markets such as North America and Asia, the GS shares the mid-size sedan category in the Lexus lineup with the front-wheel drive ES, serving as its rear-wheel-drive counterpart.
The GS was replaced in Europe by the Lexus ES from December 2018. The seventh generation ES is the first to be sold in Europe, replacing the GS in spite of being a front-wheel drive car. It went on sale from September 2018 in Russia, Turkey and other CIS markets and from December 2018 in Western and Central Europe. Production ended in August 2020.

Common 1996 Lexus Gs300 problems
The 1996 Lexus GS300 is known for its powerful 2JZ-GE engine, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. One of the most frequently reported issues is starting up problems. The car may crank but fail to start or start and then cut out within a few seconds. This issue can be caused by various factors, including faulty distributors, spark plugs, ignition coils, and camshaft sensors. In some cases, the problem may be difficult to diagnose, and the car may need to be taken to a mechanic with experience in working with the 2JZ-GE engine.
Another common problem with the 1996 Lexus GS300 is leaky power steering pumps. This issue can be caused by wear and tear on the pump's internal seals and can lead to a loss of power steering fluid, making it difficult to steer the car. Replacing the power steering pump can solve this problem, but it can be a costly repair.
The outside window trims of the 1996 Lexus GS300 tend to separate after a number of years, which can be a costly repair. The seams for the seats may also start to unthread, and the wood veneer can be cracked. These issues can be fixed, but they can be time-consuming and expensive.
The 1996 Lexus GS300's transmission may also be a limiting factor, as it can only handle about 325 rwhp before the rev limiter is reached between shifts. However, there are transmission upgrades available that can increase the car's performance.
In addition to these common problems, some 1996 Lexus GS300 owners have reported issues with the lower ball joints, dirty mass air flow (MAF) sensors, oxygen (O2) sensors, variable valve timing (VVT) solenoids, door lock actuators, and HVAC servo motors
. These issues can affect the car's performance, safety, and comfort and may require professional repairs.
In conclusion, while the 1996 Lexus GS300 is a powerful and luxurious vehicle, it is not without its common problems. Owners may experience starting up issues, leaky power steering pumps, separated window trims, unthreaded seat seams, and cracked wood veneer. Additionally, the car's transmission may be a limiting factor, and other issues, such as problems with the lower ball joints, MAF sensors, O2 sensors, VVT solenoids, door lock actuators, and HVAC servo motors, may require professional repairs.

Hey there! I recently purchased the touring w/ a little over 130k and wanted to share my thoughts with you. Firstly, I have to say that it's an incredibly reliable vehicle, which is no surprise coming from Toyota. While it may not have the power or handling of a BMW, it's just right for a vehicle of its format - with smooth acceleration and easy cornering, all while seating comfortably in the roomy interior. These 2jz engines are known to be one of the best Toyota has ever built, and with regular maintenance, it should easily surpass 200k. Personally, I love this car more every day, and to me, this model stands out more than the newer ones. The lines, designed in Italy, are simply timeless. Thanks for letting me share my thoughts with you!

This has been such a fantastic vehicle for us. The reliability has been outstanding. It goes and goes without a complaint. I purchased the vehicle used with 40K miles on it and have driven it another 50K miles over the last 6 years. It's a very comfortable vehicle.

I just said farewell to my dear GS300. Although I didn't have it for very long, just over a year, it was a great car. The previous owner didn't take good care of it, so it gave me some issues, but I bought it for $1400 and put $3000 of work into it. Every penny was worth it! I absolutely loved driving it, and the design of the interior and exterior was fantastic. Despite some issues under the hood, my dear GS never left me stranded. If you have one of these, make sure to take good care of it. I will definitely miss this car! It's an excellent vehicle. Kudos to Toyota/Lexus!

The Lexus GS 300, my first luxury car, has been a great choice. Like many others who were looking for a newer car, I had considered an SUV. However, my wife convinced me that 99.93% of my driving was in the city, so why not get a nice riding car? She was absolutely right!

I'm so glad to hear that you love your GS300! It sounds like it's been a reliable car for you, with no significant repairs beyond standard maintenance. The power seats, sunroof, and well-designed controls are definitely great comfort features. And it's impressive that you've driven over 140,000 miles! Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us.

This car has unfortunately caused us a lot of trouble and expenses. Despite our efforts to maintain it properly, we have had to replace the water pump, radiator, timing, brakes, tires, two window motors, and deal with a major transmission problem. The check engine light is also on. We initially purchased the car for $6,200, but with all the repairs, it has cost us well over $10,000. However, we remain confident in our ability to handle any future issues that may arise.
