Common 1989 Mitsubishi Mighty max problems
The Mitsubishi Mighty Max, a compact pickup truck produced from 1979 to 1996, is known for its reliability and durability. However, like any vehicle, it can experience common problems that may affect its performance and drivability. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 1989 Mitsubishi Mighty Max, based on complaints from owners:
- Starting and idling issues: Some owners of the 1989 Mighty Max have reported difficulty in starting the vehicle, especially in the mornings or after prolonged periods of inactivity. The engine may turn over several times before starting, and sometimes it may die right away. This can be due to a variety of reasons, such as a weak battery, a dirty or faulty ignition system, or a clogged fuel filter. After starting, the engine may run roughly or miss, and it may idle high, indicating a possible problem with the throttle position sensor (TPS), the idle air control valve (IAC), or the oxygen sensor.
- Acceleration problems: Another common issue with the 1989 Mighty Max is acceleration problems, where the vehicle may hesitate or stumble when the gas pedal is pressed. This can be caused by a variety of factors, such as a clogged fuel filter, a weak fuel pump, a dirty carburetor, or a faulty ignition system. In some cases, the problem may be due to the previous owner's modification of the fuel system, such as the installation of an electric fuel pump instead of the original manual fuel pump.
- Intermittent stalling: Some owners of the 1989 Mighty Max have reported intermittent stalling, where the engine may suddenly lose power and stall, especially when driving at low speeds or idling. This can be caused by a variety of factors, such as a faulty ignition system, a clogged fuel filter, a dirty throttle body, or a malfunctioning idle air control valve. In some cases, the problem may be due to a faulty crankshaft position sensor or a malfunctioning camshaft position sensor, which can cause the engine to misfire or stall.
- Clutch fork and/or shaft assembly may break: This is a common problem with the 1989 Mitsubishi Mighty Max, where the clutch fork and/or shaft assembly may break, causing the clutch pedal to become loose or unresponsive. This can be caused by wear and tear, improper use, or a manufacturing defect. In some cases, the problem may be due to a faulty clutch master cylinder or a malfunctioning clutch slave cylinder, which can cause the clutch to slip or fail to engage properly.
- Seat belt may not buckle and/or release correctly: This is a common problem with the 1989 Mitsubishi Mighty Max, where the seat belt may not buckle or release correctly, causing a safety hazard. This can be caused by wear and tear, improper use, or a manufacturing defect. In some cases, the problem may be due to a faulty seat belt latch or a malfunctioning seat belt retractor, which can cause the seat belt to become stuck or jammed.
To address these common problems with the 1989 Mitsubishi Mighty Max, it is recommended to perform regular maintenance and inspections, such as replacing the fuel filter, cleaning the throttle body, checking the ignition system, and inspecting the clutch and seat belt components. If the problem persists, it may be necessary to consult a professional mechanic or a Mitsubishi dealership for further diagnosis and repair.

- Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY
- Summary: THE FRONT SAFETY BELT BUCKLE RELEASE BUTTONS CAN BREAK. THESE RED PLASTIC RELEASE BUTTONS ARE MARKED "PRESS." IF A BUTTON BREAKS, PIECES CAN FALL INTO THE BUCKLE ASSEMBLY CAUSING THE BUCKLE TO OPERATE IMPROPERLY.

- Remedy: OWNERS SHOULD PROMPTLY CHECK THE CONDITION AND OPERATION OF BOTH FRONT SAFETY BELT BUCKLES AND CAREFULLY INSPECT THE RED RELEASE BUTTON FOR ANY BREAKS OR CRACKS. THEY SHOULD ENSURE THAT BOTH BUCKLES ARE OPERATING PROPERLY BY INSERTING EACH LATCH PLATE INTO ITS BUCKLE, TUGGING ON THE BELT TO MAKE SURE THE LATCH IS SECURELY LOCKED, AND THEN PRESSING THE RELEASE BUTTON. THE LATCH PLATE SHOULD POP OUT OF THE BUCKLE WHEN THE BUTTON IS PRESSED. IF EITHER RELEASE BUTTON SHOWS A SIGN OF BREAKING OR CRACKING OR IF EITHER BUCKLE FAILS TO OPERATE PROPERLY, OWNERS SHOULD PROMPTLY CONTACT THEIR AUTHORIZED DEALER TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE BUCKLE REPLACED OR REPAIRED, FREE OF CHARGE. THE MANUFACTURER IS DEVELOPING A REMEDY DESIGNED TO PREVENT FAILURE OF THE BUTTONS THAT ARE NOT CURRENTLY BROKEN.
