The Chevrolet Express (also known as the GMC Savana) is a series of full-size vans produced by General Motors since 1996. The successor to the Chevrolet G-series van, the Express is produced in passenger and cargo variants. Alongside the standard van body, the line is offered as a cutaway van chassis; the latter vehicle is a chassis cab variant developed for commercial-grade applications, including ambulances, buses, motorhomes, and small trucks.

In production for a single generation since 1995, over 2.5 million examples of the Express and the Savana have been produced. One of the longest-produced designs in American automotive history, the Express/Savana are rivaled only by the Jeep Wagoneer and Dodge Ram Van for longevity.

Since 1995, General Motors has assembled the Express and Savana at its Wentzville Assembly facility (Wentzville, Missouri). Also, since 2017, GM has sourced commercial cutaway-chassis production from Navistar through its Springfield Assembly Plant (Springfield, Ohio).

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-05-22
  • VIN: 1GJHG35GX21
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: THE NHTSA ISSUED A RECALL ON 2001 CHEVY SILVERADOS WITH 8.1L ENGINES DUE A INTERMITTENT CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR FAILURE CAUSING THE TRUCK TO STALL WHILE DRIVING. (SEE RECALL ID# 53021). I OWN A 2002 GMC SAVANNA 3500 VAN WITH A 8.1L ENGINE (THE VAN WAS FACTORY ORDERED BY US IN AUG 2001) THAT HAS EXHIBITED THE SAME STALLING FAILURES FOR MORE THAN 6 MONTHS. THE VAN HAS STALLED MULTIPLE TIMES AT SPEEDS IN EXCEEDS OF 40 MPH. AFTER BRINGING THE VAN TO THE DEALER FOR SERVICE ON 3/26/08 (AND THEY FINDING NOTHING WRONG WITH IT), I HAVE LOGGED THE FAILURE EVENTS SINCE THEN. THE VAN IS NOT HEAVILY USED (IT HAS JUST OVER 42000 MILES -- WHICH EQUATES TO ABOUT 500 MILES/MO.): 5/22/08 STALLED WHILE DECELERATING TO STOPLIGHT 5/23/08 DIFFICULTY STARTING 5/25/08 STALLED WHILE COASTING @ 30 MPH 6/4/08 STALLED WHILE DRIVING (MY WIFE DID NOT RECORD THE MPH) 6/22/08 STALLED AT 35 MPH 6/29/08 STALLED AT STOPLIGHT 7/9/08 STALLED TURNING INTO PARKING LOT 7/13/08 STALLED AT 5 MPH (JUST PRIOR TO A TURN) 7/20/08 STALLED AT 45 MPH 8/8/08 STALLED AT 40 MPH 8/23/08 TROUBLE STARTING I BROUGHT THE VAN INTO THE DEALER ON 8/26/08 AND HAD THEM PERFORM THE SAME WORK AS INDICATED BY THE SILVERADO RECALL. I HAVE PURPOSELY DRIVEN OVER 200 MILES AFTER THIS AND NO FAILURES HAVE OCCURRED. MY QUESTION (AND COMPLAINT) IS WHY WAS THE RECALL FOR THE 8.1L ENGINES NOT EXTENDED TO GMC SAVANNAS EQUIPPED WITH 8.1L ENGINES? HAVING A VAN LOSE ALL POWER AT SPEED IS A DANGEROUS CONDITION AND I BELIEVE IT IS IMPERATIVE TO EXPAND THE RECALL TO ALL 8.1L ENGINES BUILT IN THE 2001 TIMEFRAME (EVEN IN 2002 MODELS). THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION *TR

Hello! Thank you for considering this GM product. While it may not have performed as well as expected in some cases, we believe that it still has a lot to offer. We understand that there have been some issues with the vehicle, but we are committed to addressing them and ensuring that our customers have the best possible experience. We appreciate your feedback and hope that you will continue to consider GM products in the future.

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you mentioned using your van to pull your fishing boat to the ocean. That sounds like a lot of fun! I was thinking that it might be helpful to have side mirrors that extend out for better visibility when backing up in tight spaces. I've seen some really nice ones on Ford pickups that might work well for your van. Some of them even retract and fold against the truck when not in use. I know you love your van, and I think this could be a great addition to make your fishing trips even more enjoyable. It's great that you have holders for all your fishing gear, too. Just lock up the van and you're ready for your next adventure!

  3. Gerard Jacobson 2024-08-05

Great van! It's amazing how much power and fuel mileage it provides for such a large vehicle. I'm really looking forward to purchasing the new GM Diesel van. We use it to tow the US Bobsled to shows and take it to a lot of Nascar Races. We're very active in racing, selling our products to several teams and sponsoring others. It's not uncommon to see Nascar drivers catching a ride in our van, which can seat up to 15 people. All in all, we're extremely satisfied with it.

  4. Santa Reynolds 2024-07-10

When my diesel van was new, it had some engine problems, transmission issues, alternator malfunctions, sliding door troubles, and a few other problems. However, they were eventually fixed. Now, it is pretty reliable, except for the alternator belt that has flown off 3 times. Despite the issues I've had, I absolutely love my van! It tows great and I have no problems passing any other truck type vehicles on any mountain passes. My husband agrees that it outperforms his 1997 4x4 dually Chevy diesel truck, except for the lack of 4-wheel drive. I can honestly say that this vehicle has enhanced my life because of its towing abilities and the spacious interior it provides. Although the interior may be cheap, I have learned to live with it. I would definitely buy this vehicle again, especially with 4-wheel drive.

  5. Lucio Hansen 2024-05-18

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Exployer conversion. While the interior looks great, I did notice that the ride quality is only fair. Additionally, at highway speeds, there is quite a bit of wind noise which can make it difficult to hold a conversation.

Positive 2002 Gmc Savana car reviews

  1. Jack Block 2024-10-16

An excellent conversion van-- Trailmaster conversion. After 10 years and 160,000 miles it is still reliable and comfortable. This van has spoiled me for driving distances in anything else.

  2. Cristina DuBuque 2024-10-13

This 1500 Savana is the best hightop conversion van explorer ever made. It has a 350cid V8 5.7Liter Vortec engine with approximately 430,000 original miles. It was purchased brand new and has had only one owner. It has been a daily driver since day one and passes state inspection every year. The transmission was replaced a couple of hundred thousand miles ago and still shifts like butter with no issues. The front and rear A/C is so cold that it's colder than a Bentley. It's smoother than a Mercedes Benz. The 2500 vans are stiff and bouncy, but this one is smooth and comfortable. It gets an average of 17 mpg on the highway and with its 30-gallon tank, it gives that extra comfort of the smoothest, powerful long-lasting 350 iron block that's been dependable since new. Even though the recent news with the vans 2024 models no longer having V8s but a turbo 6, I seriously don't think it will be as reliable as mine. Loaded down with tools going up hills, I doubt it will perform as well. And then in 2025, the vans will go out with a bang with v6 turbos breaking down in vans. All the vans being discontinued is a shame. If I ever decide to sell it, I wouldn't take less than 100,000 bucks, but even at six figs, I would not let mine go. It's been a great van!

  3. Jeramie Jones 2024-10-03

I really enjoy my 1500 van! It's so much smoother than the bouncy 2500. It has the vortec 350 with 430k miles, but the original motor runs like a champ with no issues passing inspection every year. The transmission has been swapped out once, but it's still driving every day and getting 17 mpg. With the rear A/C, it gets colder than a Cadillac!

  4. Guiseppe Wiegand 2024-09-09

In November 2021, I purchased a 1998 GMC 2500 Savana with the 5.7 motor. The seller mentioned that a company had taken care of it and that the motor had been rebuilt with only 90,000 miles on it. Although I wasn't given any information about what was done to the motor, it runs great and has power. The van was previously used as a cargo van/food truck and has no major dents, but the sliding side door handle and lock were missing and the back driver's side door needs to be lifted up a touch to latch properly. Despite these minor issues, it starts up every time and goes down the highway great. The gas gauge works and there is no 'Service Engine Soon' light. I did notice a slight play in the steering when going down the highway, but it stays straight and doesn't pull from side to side. Currently, the biggest issue is a ticking sound every revolution of the engine, which is hard to locate. However, I've driven the van around 1,300 miles with the ticking sound and it hasn't gotten better or worse. I've been trying to find the culprit and have checked the flywheel for cracks, the tightness of the flywheel bolts, and even removed the left valve cover to inspect the rockers. I made a YouTube video to show the process: see this: https://youtu.be/GUGiHv2Fk3U. The rockers on the left side looked really clean and there was no gunk around the cover and on the bottom.First, I will adjust my rocker bolts and then change the oil again to check for metal shavings. While the oil pan is off, I will use a small ball peen and tap the bottom of each rod to listen for any unusual sounds. This will help me identify any problems with the bearings. In the worst-case scenario, I may have to pull the engine and check everything or replace it altogether. However, sometimes it's best to leave things as they are if they're not causing any issues. I have read about some owners who have a tick/knock and continue to drive their vehicle without any problems. If you have a 1998 GMC with a ticking noise, please let me know your situation. I hope my review has been helpful. Overall, I love the way the van drives and it's worth it to me to repair it since the body, suspension, and brakes seem to be in great shape. Take care!

It's great to hear that you and your family have had such a positive experience with your van! While there have been some minor issues with the brakes and driver's side window, it's clear that your family has made many happy memories in the van. In fact, your family loves the van so much that you just purchased a new one! Here's to another 10+ years of happy travels!
